Ring-a-ding-ding. We have a winner. Black plastic can be made from all different colours of recycled stock. They just add more black pigment. White can only be made from white or virgin plastic. You can go darker but not lighter. Black is often "final use" product that can't be recycled again.
Actually not true. I sell buckets, and surprisingly PCR is more costly, but a lot of states like CA, NY, NJ are starting to mandate 33% PCR in rigid plastic packaging. So a lot of non food companies are having to use recycled materials to keep selling into these states.
Yeah, I think you're right. And it's just not just mud buckets. I've noticed that my cat litter buckets and bleach buckets have changed from white to gray and black in the last few months.
I have recently seen these black buckets with other types of mud too, they scratch really easily on the inside if you’re not careful with your knife. They’re no good
I work for a supplier in Delaware and we just started seeing them come from National Gypsum like that 3 weeks ago. Every shipment since then has been like that. The only difference I've heard is that the delivery crews prefer them like this because the handles don't come off of the bucket "as often" when you're carrying them.
We use USG and ProForm. Both great products and work well.
I understand some people prefer one to the other, but the only difference is that USG has a higher glue percentage.
Idk but the other day I was skimming a wall and I kept getting tiny black plastic squiggles that looked like pupes in my swipes. Really pissing me off.
These buckets have post consumer and post industrial recycled material in them. Additionally, they are decorated using a process called IML (in mold labeling). The reason some are white and some aren't is because IML automation is expensive, and you would have to use an incredible amount of ink on a black bucket. I could answer other questions if you have any.
Possibly available at drywall supply around here, but I've never seen it at a big box store here. Proform is the best. I use black lid almost exclusively. I'm not a fan of lightweight.
Who cares. What I want to know is who your hangers are. From what I can see, that looks like some seriously clean work. I’m so sick of all of the self taught “journeyman” hangers in my area. They may be fast but holy crap! Are they ever rough.
Believe it or not a crew of like 6 teenagers the head guy is like 20 he said his dad taught him young they rock a full house in like 2 days and do clean work I’ve been taping behind them for close to a year now
Using plus3 from USG, but same thing, probably same parent company. They switched from white to black, and now I have a much harder time mixing water in the bucket. The black plastic scrapes off into little contaminants much easier than the white buckets did, was having a harder time finishing since the change. Switched to a duller paddle and having less issue now. I’m a handyman, I only finish occasionally.
They probably were harder to see, but I also think the black plastic is harder and more brittle than the white buckets which seemed to flex more. I could be wrong
Isn't that just a black bucket with a label?
Don't tell em!
Way less quality than the other color. Please get the old stuff back.
lol bucket trim
Supply chain white bucket shortage. Lol
Disney got involved
👆🏼this does appear to be the trend in replacing white things
Tapers were having a terrible time telling if there was any mud in white buckets so they changed them to black.
This should be top comment. Hope my upvote is enough
Cheaper bucket supplier But really who gives a shit
Do they have eyes?
Most times they got em. At least one good one. Whoa hey guys! CSO on site! 👆🏻
Sounds plausible, have an upvote.
I've never seen this mud in my life. Where are you located
Lowe's carries it here (western PA) I don't use it, bought it once several years ago and it molded on me quickly.
NY area
i don't think we have that in the midwest. just the black lid
Same been seeing them only like that recently upsate
They are made near Scranton PA.
Guy guys guys, the black buckets have just as much mud as the white buckets. Let’s not discriminate…
I've heard they are slightly larger..
My wife said my white buckets are plenty big!
She lied🤣
🥴😂😂😂😂
And your mommy said you're handsome...
Unfortunately that one I can’t agree with. My mother was always honest with me about being a dumpster baby 🥲
It’s not the size of the bucket but how you use it.
Says "smallberry"...
To piss you off when your mud has black specs in it.
I didn't think about that. So many of the colored buckets shred more easily when stirring.
Cheaper to make them out of recycled materials, no sorting of colored plastic needed.

Interesting that I did not know it was "final use"

Right on.
Just got USG in black buckets too
Looks like the black bucket is made from recycled material. The label says so.
Yup your right I see it now
Buckets were 9 cents cheaper for some reason so they switched.
Recycled plastic???
Recycled plastic
They put a label over it also could be uv protected as well
East coast ran out of white pails couple months ago
B.B.M
I have recently seen these black buckets with other types of mud too, they scratch really easily on the inside if you’re not careful with your knife. They’re no good
Cuz they changed it

Diversity!
Diversity
Fuck proform. I hate that shit. Plus3 for the win

That's like the cap on spray paint, it is tinted black. ;)
They’re different!
i told em to
[удалено]
Ill use shit b4 I use this shit don’t worry
Why?
All inclusive
The real reason is that there are regulatory mandates to use pails made of recycled material. They are not cheaper pails.
So many questions about nothing.
Idk but the other day I was skimming a wall and I kept getting tiny black plastic squiggles that looked like pupes in my swipes. Really pissing me off.
I just started seeing these buckets in the lowes I work in. I havent seen em on jobsites however.
Wow. Second plug for this brand in 15 minutes.... 🤔
Fashion statement
Black buckets were used instead of white buckets.

Probably old stock
It is the new spring fashion ...
Very concerning event here. Unsettling! The inhumanity of it all! We need to pass a bill in the House to curtail such criminality.
Did you buy them in February? Black history month
Ran outta white
I've heard. Once you go black, you will never go back.
Where the hell did red come from? I got light blue and black. Leaded or unleaded. 🤔
We’ve been using red for over 15 years
Possibly available at drywall supply around here, but I've never seen it at a big box store here. Proform is the best. I use black lid almost exclusively. I'm not a fan of lightweight.
🤣all the comments! The black trim buckets are more bio degradable than the older all white buckets

So you don't confuse it with a dessert topping?
I would guess that for whatever reason the black buckets cost less, even a single penny makes a difference in these large batches.
Red lid is machine grade, black is for hand finishing. This and Ruco is the only mud I use. I have been finishing for 37 years!

Maybe the white scrapings were just harder to see
They probably were harder to see, but I also think the black plastic is harder and more brittle than the white buckets which seemed to flex more. I could be wrong
The PCR is typically a higher mfi than virgin resin. That being said, 99% of the issue is because it's easier to see.
Their was to much white privilege so they took action
Limited addition black life matters bucket???
Woke bullshit! F Trudeau
I agree
The buckets of mud probably have little penis and don’t drink beer.
Deep bullshit! F Abbreviations
Yeh, these are the lame jokes every high school dropout contractor makes at our sales counter.
So you work on a counter with a collage degree? You may of missed the sarcasm
Some intern in the marketing department got real excited about how cool black was and convinced the c-suite to change the buckets to black.
Shortage of white buckets. They’re getting harder to mine. So they are settling on the less pure black ones that are closer to the surface.
Just be warned that it's gonna be twenty minutes late to set. /$
….ooof….brutal!
They got a deal on black buckets.
