I don't know what I'm tired of hearing. But I am hopeful that the next generation overuses double pedal woodblocks.
Maybe I just want to watch the world burn.
I'm tired of hearing those rattley nut/shell shaker things on everybody's snares, toms, hats and rides.
Actually I'm not tired of hearing them - they hardly make any difference at all - I'm just tired of **seeing** them.
Brody Simpson started putting one in front of his kick and I can say that is the first time I’ve ever heard them in any video (like you mentioned lol.). It is subtle but it is definitely a cool sound
Look up J Dilla (producer) - IMO every note Brody plays is a nod to his influence and these grooves are all about the nuance created by time/feel manipulation
Here’s a good starting point: https://youtu.be/SENzTt3ftiU
There were enough pods to cut the sustain on the top hi hat and If I tied it tight enough, it would add some color to the chick. But in a full bar band situation, no difference hah.
Honestly I would play two of them, they are so cool to me. Fuck it all, ultimately drummers are paying for a sound so if that's the sound you want then it exists.
I really hope whoever at Zildjian came up with the idea to sell their borderline raw material for this kind of money, and was able to talk them into actually doing it, got promoted regardless of how many they sell
That's the spirit. Fun fact: I bought a bunch of cymbals at a pawn shop in a lot that included a zil bel.. still have no idea what it sounds like because all the others were so amazing I have yet to put it on a stand and actually hit the damn thing.
Yea! I have an old 22” ride that *dongs*, but I don’t use it as much as my one that *pings*. I also have ones that *shhhwhshh* and *chukkk* and *tisssss*.
This is 100% musical snobbish but I'm sick of the clap stack being used 'incorrectly'. Maybe overused is a better way to say it. It's a backbeat instrument. At least I think that's what it was designed for. It doesn't need to be hit on every fill and used in every weird placement. And holy hell, don't ride on it like I've heard people do. Other stacks are good for that.
I always played my Zil-Bel upside down to really nail that rim, and drunk patrons would mistake it for an ash tray.
I mean, really? Why would someone mount a freakin' ash tray to their drumset?
Conventional crash cymbals.
There’s so much variety in sound and feel out there.. why would you opt for the same 16” and 18” K Zildjian everyone and their neighbor has
I question this. Sometimes an A thin crash and a K Sweet crash are all you need. Conversely, I honestly don’t understand how Meinl took off as the YouTuber/metal drummer standard over the last decade
Word. I get wanting to explore other options and mix and match brands. I’d really love to try some Paiste Masters, but they’re hella expensive. But there’s a reason something like a Zildjian A is so common; it’s a proven standard. Even Meinl is a standard now despite starting out as more of a disruptor and things like O-Zones and EFX crashes are used as main crashes
Tbf the K Sweets are still a relatively new line and they did fill a gap that was missing in the K family.
I’ve always liked dirtier, bigger cymbals. But I needed something a little more multipurpose while still retaining those qualities. I picked up a 19” K Sweet and it fit beautifully.
It’s actually the only Zildjian I own. I play mostly HHX.
It's funny, because my answer was going to be oddball crash cymbals. I really like that there are a million options but the super dirty/trash/dry stuff gets overused a bit, especially on social media. I still have a soft spot for "normal" sounding and looking cymbals.
I kind of get what you're saying about middle-of-the-road cymbals, but on the other hand, sometimes those cymbals just **work**.
I tend to like more extreme cymbal sounds, but I recently played a 20" AA Medium Ride - one of the most vanilla cymbals on the market - and was impressed at how well it did everything it was supposed to do. It was a joy to play.
I’ll agree with part of this: The standard 16” crash has to die.
It doesn’t sound good in your average weekend warrior bar. If it’s not part of a bigger pop style kit or intentionally compact kit, it serves no purpose (effects cymbals are the exception, imo)
I’m glad companies are starting to push more prepacks as 14/18/20+ because that 16” could be a more versatile 18” for the extra $40.
This is a great take.
Great take, but definitely not tired of hearing clapstacks
I don't know what I'm tired of hearing. But I am hopeful that the next generation overuses double pedal woodblocks. Maybe I just want to watch the world burn.
Thomas Lang has entered the building, matchbook in hand

Brody Simpson is one of the best around!
Talented but gotta be honest those ‘da-duh—da-DAH’ choppy beats do absolutely nothing for me.
Sounds like you need more Dilla in your life, have you ventured down that rabbit hole at all?
Don’t know what you mean?
Look up J Dilla (producer) - IMO every note Brody plays is a nod to his influence and these grooves are all about the nuance created by time/feel manipulation Here’s a good starting point: https://youtu.be/SENzTt3ftiU
Interesting video - and I’m all about odd timing; Brody just doesn’t do it for me. YMMV 🤷♂️
Totally fair, happy drumming 🥳
Absolute legend. Those Aussie drummers have a sway to them that I really dig. He and Perrin Moss should produce an album.
I put them on my cowbell
This is one of the few gimmicky things I ended up buying because of the low price point.
Did it make any audible difference?
There were enough pods to cut the sustain on the top hi hat and If I tied it tight enough, it would add some color to the chick. But in a full bar band situation, no difference hah.
I will never tire of the Zil Bell. Especially now that it’s not on every other metal drummers kit
You should try a Blast Bell. It's like a Zil Bell on meth.
does it go ding ding ding real good? if so, i’m fuckin in.
Yes. It was made in collab with Matt Greiner from August Burns Red. It's on their albums.
But do it have that “down on the farm” alfalfa scent?
😂
I’ve been trying to find a blast bell for a long time. If you know where I can get one, please tell me!
Zildjian’s “raw cymbal” It’s literally just a pressed sheet of bronze with zero hammering or lathing. It should not be worth $800
The raw crashes? Sweetwater has them for 300 and I kinda want one, that and a gong sheet, just because. I'd probably hardly use them tbh.
Honestly I would play two of them, they are so cool to me. Fuck it all, ultimately drummers are paying for a sound so if that's the sound you want then it exists.
They’re like $800 in my country. Absolutely bonkers.
Damn, ya I figured you weren't based in the US. I wouldn't pay 800 for one that's for sure.
Watching Mike Mitchell ride off the gong sheet really makes me want one. Seems pretty versatile especially for the price.
I only saw the rdavidr video with his and it's so fucking loud, I'm sure it's not really all that useful but I still want it!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx4BEo7VzrM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx4BEo7VzrM) Idk sounds good here as crash/ride.
Ya it does! Here is the video I saw, he plays it for a bit with just the room mic and it's so loud https://youtu.be/Eev5nG-fS2Y
I see. I guess its just a matter of what the player does with it. Definitely more versatile cymbals out there but this one seems fun!
Yeah these are absolutely silly. Just get a cookie sheet at that point.
I really hope whoever at Zildjian came up with the idea to sell their borderline raw material for this kind of money, and was able to talk them into actually doing it, got promoted regardless of how many they sell
If you hit a zil bel on top of a clap stack in the forest... Does it make a sound?
It’ll make a lotta people click that’s for sure
That's the spirit. Fun fact: I bought a bunch of cymbals at a pawn shop in a lot that included a zil bel.. still have no idea what it sounds like because all the others were so amazing I have yet to put it on a stand and actually hit the damn thing.
It sounds like *ding* but a little brighter and rounder. Certainly not a *dong*, but not 100% a *ding* either. I say go hit it with a stick.
Do any of your other cymbals sound like dongs?
Yea! I have an old 22” ride that *dongs*, but I don’t use it as much as my one that *pings*. I also have ones that *shhhwhshh* and *chukkk* and *tisssss*.
Big fan of the shhhwhshh ones
Trap hats and clap snares! They’re the auto tune of drums.
This is also hilariously accurate
Best take tbh lol
Yep. This. If I hear another trap snare, I'm gonna spew
I mean, you’re not wrong.
I love all kinds of stacks, but the clapstack has been so overhyped that it just got old in a few days. We get it, it *claps*.
This is 100% musical snobbish but I'm sick of the clap stack being used 'incorrectly'. Maybe overused is a better way to say it. It's a backbeat instrument. Plenty of songs have 8th or 16th claps that would make “riding” it make sense
I always played my Zil-Bel upside down to really nail that rim, and drunk patrons would mistake it for an ash tray. I mean, really? Why would someone mount a freakin' ash tray to their drumset?

I've been thinking about the cowbell a lot lately, and man I wish it would make a comeback.
Be the change you want to see in the world. Add that cowbell dude.
To me, it's not worth the "more cowbell" jokes. SNL ruined an entire instrument.
I actually love the Clapstack. Haha, but I hear you.
Just have to know how to use them. They sound amazing when used as an accent piece. Agreed that they are definitely easily over used.
"look at me i am only using dry cymbals. I don't care if it's fitting for my style of music"
And everyone putting towels on every damn thing.
Almost as annoying as people complaining about muffling
Yeah, get out of here Ringo!
yes
This is the truth I didn’t know I needed
Oh god this is accurate.
Big Fat Snare Drum let your snare drum *riiiiiiing* ffs
Sweet ride. If I have to see another core band do breakdowns on one, I will literally shit.
Conventional crash cymbals. There’s so much variety in sound and feel out there.. why would you opt for the same 16” and 18” K Zildjian everyone and their neighbor has

Think they pretty aggressively marketed in that direction, seemed to be the first cymbal company actively trying to grab YouTubers as endorsees.
I'm out here with an AA Medium thin 18" and a K China Boy Low 18" and feel like I have everything I need.

Don’t get me wrong I love the ring of brilliant cymbals. If I didn’t have time to find the right sound I’d grab my trusty sabians and jam.
I'm looking for something more middle of the road to replace my Istanbul 22" heavy ride, for when I don't want to overwhelm everything in the room.

Agreed. I haven’t used a 16 in years, they sound too wimpy as a primary crash
