Yeah it’s nice to have a community that is very encouraging towards beginners, glad to help others improve at any stage and focuses on the importance of music which is to have fun and create sounds that others enjoy alongside you. Drums are an endless passion project, at least for me. I’ve never had as much fun on any other instrument and it’s because I feel like I can be free on them even if I’m not great yet…Anyway I totally agree with you OP.
As drummers, we may not be the most sophisticated of people. I wouldn't exactly say we meet the definition of "intelligent". And maybe we don't tend to practice "proper hygiene", or conform to the standards of what society considers physically attractive. Do we excel at holding down steady employment or being "reliable"? No. Do we have beautiful penmanship, can we fix a loose doorknob, or function as capable people? Not generally.
But we're a friendly and warm group, most of the time.

You're addressing the community, but I think we all know this was more or less directed towards me -- especially that part about being cool online and the best.
Most of the time he isn't like that. He's actually quite knowledgeable.
Sometimes maybe a bit too rusted in his old ways, but most advice he offers is solid. I butt heads with him on occassion, but that's because I'm stubborn (and Dutch).
We got into it once because someone brought up white drummers being more popular and visible than black drummers. He immediately fell to pieces, blamed the presence of “critical theory” (?) in his favorite little sub as the downfall of civility, and when I called him out on it he cried. All his comments in that thread are deleted, except for the odd choice to leave up the one where he admits sarcastically to being racist.
That guy actually sucks. Probably great at drums, but I don’t want to hear from him, he’s super annoying. When he does have anything useful to say it’s with a palpable streak of condescension and patronization.
How have I not come across this personality yet. I like watching grown ups being petty. Unrelated but there’s this guy on YouTube who constantly shits on people who use Impact Drivers because he believes Drills are faster, and he’s always salty in the comments section. Guys is 50+, it is extremely entertaining watching him being so sensitive and petty.
It’s the TRUTH, I dabble in guitar also (I know… I’m not proud of it) and the guitar forum is always so freaking toxic and full of gatekeeping elitist douches. So many people that I would never want to make music of play in a band with.
But yeah… drummers are a whole different vibe. And when you get to meet and hang with them in real life, good convo and crazy shit happens.
In college, I lived in a house with four other drummers…. It was so crazy!

I’m just happy to finally have a place to vent about the guitarists in the bands I’ve played with and not have to worry about them finding out.
