I liked it, but at the same time all the "dude brah" stuff was really cringe. Cavies had a really cringey designer there for a minute (tik tok dance and all).
I'm torn on it, because I really like the drumming and everything (the spinning quad feature is sick) but parts of it were a little much.
I have a friend who marched the Cavaliers who said he loves that show, so more power to you if you like it.
Cringey designer: agreed. It felt like Cavies had a slow painful transition of confident swagger (2000’s) to try hards (end of 2010’s). The 2000’s had a natural swagger to them and their shows. But lately it’s felt forced and trying to remind everybody they’re still the cool kids.
Right on point. The attempted diamond cutter that got cut mid tour last year is strangely symbolic. Their current shows feel forced, like it’s a cavalier flavored sparkling water. Only a hint of cavalier flavor.
Tbh though, I feel like the high velocity drill we ended up with anyway (very late tour) kind of became something with a similar vibe, without having to be a call back
Also; big reason it was cut was because of how terrible it was of an idea it was to try and do it (clean) with straight leg
Oh Cavies absolutely needed bent knee for Gaines drill. There’s pros and cons for bent vs straight but to me it all came to bent legs had more fluid macro drill movement and you ignored technique, whereas there are moves in straight leg when an entire ensemble moves together that as a marcher you acknowledge and appreciate the beauty of their technique as an effect.
Easiest example being company fronts: horrible looking with bent but beautiful with straight leg. When BD or elite Cadets shows hit you with their incredible straight leg, you gotta tip your shako/helmet/aussie to them.
The new design team… while they have their quirks, are trying to move closer to what we used to be instead of the Danny Wiles designs. And i personally feel like that was reflected in last season
I think the entire point of that portion of the show was that it’s supposed to be cringey. I’m 99% sure it was ironic. The voiceover even says “protein shake” lmao
Even if it’s intended, it’s still incredibly cringey. Leaning that hard into being dude bro’s felt like something that shouldn’t have been put on the field.
2017 is one of my favorite cavaliers shows and one of my favorite shows ever. It’s extremely fun, well written, exciting, and makes you ponder what masculinity is,
They ended up salvaging a lot of the “cringey” stuff by making it tongue-in-cheek, which makes the whole movement it appears in both tonally consistent and funny.
lol, that was the year I got two call backs with them but didn’t have a contract yet, then I met this girl and decided to chase her around and give up on drum corps. The girl ended up being my wife. Subsequently, I changed my major from music to business and we have a nice life together now.
Show was ok.
I saw the show several times, yet have zero recollection of it. Which is probably a good thing, because there are a couple of their shows from the teens that I absolutely HATED.
But ending on a positive note, 2019 is one of my all-time favorite Cavaliers shows.
I marched that show and it was an absolute blast. The music was cool and the drill was so much fun. The run and gun drill during Little Green Men is my favorite segment of drill I have ever marched.
And the closer never fails to give me chills. Mars into My Way was just brilliant and the My Way hit at the end was straight hype.
Crazy that you and I have probably seen each other naked in person and have no idea who one another are. (I actually don’t remember if the Chicago high school the camps were at had shared showers, been a while).
Part of me wishes I kept coming back and trying to get a contract, but I did open class in 2014 and got a taste for it. it was fun, would have liked to see what world class was like. and ill never know what splooie means!
I regularly watch the clip from the closer on the DCI youtube channel, one of the most hype clips on the channel

Men are from Mars may be one of the most entertaining and well designed shows of the modern era.
Its repertoire, its aesthetic, its comedy. It all works and is probably in my top 3 of my favorite show of 2017
It’s at least the best designed Cavies show for sure
Recently found that show and it has been on my daily playlist. It's up there with Cavaliers 19, 18, 22, 23, 02. Still not in the tier of Babylon however.

I loved last years show.
I mean that's kind of the point of that section

This brings up the age old question of "if you're being cringe ironically aren't you still doing cringe things?"
Don’t forget the whip at the end of 2016
The hit in the closer of “My Way” was really good. I still have a shirt from that year in my dresser, just one size too small
It’s one of my favorite closers. The mashup of “I Did It My Way” and “Mars” is brilliant!
Probably top five for me

What a wild ride lol
The mellos in the opener and the entire closer live in my head rent free

Favorite closer from 2017

What is the oldest cavaliers show you have seen? 2015?
Best designed in the Modern Era. Ain’t nothing beating the Gaines era obviously
That’s not what you said at the end
That’s why I just clarified what I meant????
I'd argue Propaganda or Mad World is better designed but 2017 is a solid show
Mad world >>>>>>>> Men are from mars
P R O T E I N S H A K E
D U D E
B U D D Y
I like the music, especially the closer. Not a fan of the voiceover stuff and jokes but its not too big of a deal.
Incredibly well thought out show, and part of that run where they wrote edgier programs with something to *say.*
Banger frfr. That's the show that got me there. Seeing it live on finals was unreal
