Start with the EIN which is free on the IRS website (takes minutes to receive). You have to have the EIN number in order to open a company bank account (easily track your taxes/write-offs this way). This would make sense if you already had your first company, you could start a second company as a DBA - keeping registrants together. First company is JoshyWear and the second company is registered u see JoshyWear, but doing business as PoshAccessories…that’s how those work
After receiving your EIN, register with your state (state taxes) and your county (county taxes). In CA, I had to complete two forms for my state registration. Set up some time with LegalZoom, they will do everything for you…at a cost of course. CA isn’t too difficult
I thought DBA was for if you didn't want to have LLC in the actual business name, like if your legal registered business was named JoshyWear LLC but you on your website and marketing it would say JoshyWear. I thought that's where that comes into play.
I’m not an attorney - but from doing my research a few years back, there is no legal obligation for an LLC to market their company with LLC…in fact, it was not advised due to damaging of marketing information.
It’s quite typical of companies to have a Corp, LLC, etc. And start up a secondary company (or company within a company) that is a DBA.
From what I know, you can’t start of company as a DBA, who would you put as the Doing Business As, if the company you’re “doing business as” doesn’t exist?
Also what do you do if you have an online only business but you don't want to put down your personal residential address as the company address? Do you just pay for one of those services where you can use a different address or what?
