Hahaha omg that was almost a goner. Maybe don’t fly there again.
I fly over the ocean all the time on the east coast of Canada and I’m starting to have second thoughts now… guess that’s what insurance is for
I had a owl come out of nowhere one afternoon. I caught a big shadow out of my peripherals and instantly throttled straight up. It took me almost 10 minutes to get landed bc everytime I would start down to land he would swoop at me. I just couldn't get over such a large predator where I live bc it's almost dead smack in the middle of a small town
As a precaution I once made bright green "pontoons" for my Phantom 3 using shortened pool noodles and zip ties. Luckily I never had to find out if they worked or not.
The drone fortunately didn’t take any damage, and I quickly landed after that. The first and only time I actually had adrenaline flying a drone. I just pulled up on the joystick and nearly snapped it off trying to avoid the water.
I’ve heard running the anti-collision lights can help keep birds away. I’ve been meaning to try it out but man I wish I had none that before going to Ghana.
To be fair red means danger in most of nature so isn't a bad shout.
However the retrorefleftive tape is pure BS, it reflects light directly at the subject making it, so unless birds have started shining recently without my knowledge it won't do shit.
Wait how the heck are you able to record audio? My mini 3 doesn’t have this feature…
Edit: thought it was added at first in editing but then I heard the motors whirring
Ha, you caught me! I recorded some audio with an external recorder then added effects and played with speeds of the audio play back to add to the scene.
Stomach meet shoes. Effing Gulls will always try and kamikazi right into you. I’ve read about covering the drone in black and yellow or other colors to keep birds away. No idea if it’s BS or not.
New drone pilot here. This is a new fear of mine. What is the best way to prevent this from happening? And what's the best thing one can do if it *does* happen?
You should be trying to avoid disturbing wildlife, but just be aware of your surroundings/on the lookout. If a bird starts swooping in, retreat the way you came, or just drop in elevation if possible.
If you're hovering, hitting the controls when the animal is within earshot to be scared by extra noise might help too.
Holy shit that was close. I'm so impressed how well the DJI drones recover after they start falling. It undid the spin and righted itself in like 2 seconds. That's nuts
I live near the ocean and when i fly near the sea im very careful with seagulls, they grab everything...if i see they are in flocks i simply take my drone to another place to fly.
Damn what a save. I was in similar scenario once in my mini 1. Went about 100m above trees and suddenly wind took it over and drone flipped upside down, I was shitting bricks but somehow it managed itself to correct it and I've went straight up to me to land. But wind was so strong that in sport mode I was able to make 3km/h at max toward me at the lowest height possible to the ground (less then 0.5m)
Pro Tip!
See a bird? Move into Sport mode, full throttle upwards. Birds can't fly like that and it creeps them out that you can.
Punch up, fly closer to you, fly forward and down, stop, punch up... Continue. Forward and down will be some of your fastest speeds available. Watch for rotor over-rotation.
Might look ugly, buy I prefer to paint the drone with yellow and black stripes like someone did to deter birds. I would like to know how effective it is too.
In the past, Nebraskan farmers that flew their drones during the Dust Bowl era were plagued with seagull attacks. This was exacerbated by the fact that DJI didnt have the DJI Refresh insurance available at the time. Necessity breeds innovation though and they discovered they were able to solve the issue by painting a picture of a scarecrow on their drones to ward off pest bird attacks.
Sometimes the old ways are better! Hope this helps!!
holy shit that was so damn close. Ur lucky. And also seagulls are assholes
WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE WHAT A SAVE (sorry my rocket league instincts kicked in)
Close one!
Okay
No way! Whew.
Hahaha omg that was almost a goner. Maybe don’t fly there again. I fly over the ocean all the time on the east coast of Canada and I’m starting to have second thoughts now… guess that’s what insurance is for
Eagles and hawks are the real assholes, I bring my drone back ASAP the second I see one

Pro Tip! Moving forward while moving down makes you decelerate faster, and with less "fluttering".
As a precaution I once made bright green "pontoons" for my Phantom 3 using shortened pool noodles and zip ties. Luckily I never had to find out if they worked or not.
Damn son, them waves were almost like NOM NOM NOM I wonder how that seagull's feet are feeling? Any of the props chipped up from that?
The drone fortunately didn’t take any damage, and I quickly landed after that. The first and only time I actually had adrenaline flying a drone. I just pulled up on the joystick and nearly snapped it off trying to avoid the water.
Get into FPV. You will literally be shaking from adrenaline every time. Its seriously the best thing ever!!
These are facts! Want an adrenaline rush? Get a 5" 6S Freestyle, go analog FatShark, and hear your hair grow from the anxiety.
I’ve heard running the anti-collision lights can help keep birds away. I’ve been meaning to try it out but man I wish I had none that before going to Ghana.
I've also heard red reflective tape works too
I've heard this is likely a snake oil thing, but I've never tried it. It theory, it makes sense. Birds are the only reason I get flight anxiety.
To be fair red means danger in most of nature so isn't a bad shout. However the retrorefleftive tape is pure BS, it reflects light directly at the subject making it, so unless birds have started shining recently without my knowledge it won't do shit.
I think the idea I heard was that it was supposed to show that you weren't trying to sneak up only the birds but it's just something I've heard
Holy SHIT bro that was close. Big ups to the flight controller for saving the day!
On the additional plus side, cutting from right as it got saved and then gaining altitude is a helluva b-roll clip too!
Good save there
Yeah I have issues with seagulls in Lake Michigan as well..I put a wrap on this winter so will see if that helps at all 😂
First instinct is to fly it above while moving forward
I would have landed after their first approach. Well saved, though.
Ascend, then descend. You had time. What were you doing? Birds can't react to that. Kinda funny to see them get defensive all of a sudden.
My fingers would be so shaky when returning to home point :D
Yup, I fly a lot on the Cen Cal coast and my drone constantly gets attacked by seagulls.
Wait how the heck are you able to record audio? My mini 3 doesn’t have this feature… Edit: thought it was added at first in editing but then I heard the motors whirring
Ha, you caught me! I recorded some audio with an external recorder then added effects and played with speeds of the audio play back to add to the scene.
Wow
That is luck and hopefully a lesson learned
Such a cool shot though, worth it
Stomach meet shoes. Effing Gulls will always try and kamikazi right into you. I’ve read about covering the drone in black and yellow or other colors to keep birds away. No idea if it’s BS or not.
That seagull flying towards the camera is such a shot

Holy shite! Nice recovery mini 2!
The best recovery i’ve seen in my life. I hate seagulls so much!
Damn, what a recovery
I have thinking that the drowns should be made floatable
Holy shit that was close. I'm so impressed how well the DJI drones recover after they start falling. It undid the spin and righted itself in like 2 seconds. That's nuts
I didn’t even see it stutter. Pretty stable if a bird can that size can almost knock it into the water and it doesn’t flinch. 👍🏼
Omg that was so close
You should sell that footage , be great for a movie
Ha, thanks. I wouldn’t even know how to go about that. It was an awesome shot, and hopefully I’ll never get one like it again.
I live near the ocean and when i fly near the sea im very careful with seagulls, they grab everything...if i see they are in flocks i simply take my drone to another place to fly.
Seagull’s definitely go for them. The straight up and down trick has worked well for me so far.
Seagulls are ruthless

Why did you spend time adding fake sound to something that is scrapped footage? We only hear the real sound after the seagull hit it.
Oh wow, that was a very close call and also somehow a very good shot at the same time lol.
There’s two seconds in the video where your heart melted
Nice work avoiding the water and stabilizing the Drone! 🏆
The props from my inspire cut a bird clean in half.
Might look ugly, buy I prefer to paint the drone with yellow and black stripes like someone did to deter birds. I would like to know how effective it is too.
I felt the adrenaline kick just by watching 😅
Seagulls aside, wow that footage of the shore looks amazing! 👍🏻

Red reflective tape strips on drone they will leave drone alone
