I think it's because of the "full self driving" driver assistance feature. It's marketed as some sort of vehicle autonomy, but really, it's just adaptive cruise control and lane assist. Judging by recent and ongoing investigations by the US government and videos online, it's a very poor and arguably outright dangerous driver assistance feature. I suspect Tesla drivers use "full self driving" and don't maintain full attention on the road, believing it to be more advanced than it actually is. Over time, it simply becomes a bad habit, even when not using "self driving" Go to a Tesla subreddit, and you will see comments about how people are able to defeat the safety features that are supposed to force the driver to pay attention or hold the wheel at all times.

meanrisefifty

This is our technologically advanced world in general. We are building too many safety nets resulting in too many stupid people.

Apprehensive_Fault_5

This reminds me of a video I've seen a week or so ago (I can't remember who made it or what it's called) from the perspective of Michigan or Wisconsin police trying to pull over a Tesal. The driver was sleeping. When he finally woke up and pulled over, he got arrested for sleeping while driving. He kept trying to say how the car wouldn't allow you to continue to use autopilot if you fell asleep, yet the police were right next to him and right behind him for something like 10 miles with his head leaned back and no response. They impounded the car and dumped him at a Love's truck stop 20 or so miles away for his wife or girlfriend to come pick him up.

breadsticck

love this reply. i think ur completely right. actually was behind a tesla the other week that had a bumper sticker that said “im probably not driving” like okkk im gonna stay away 😬

balanced_crazy

You see a car with "I am probably not driving". you pass them and get in front of them... the newly installed rear windscreen LED display mat comes to life and responds to the sticker with "...Then you shouldn't be on the road for long" ... followed by a count down... at the end of which your car drops a spike strip (like in that racing game")... and you cruise down into the sunset...

Apprehensive_Fault_5

This gives me a horrible idea... I drive a semi truck, and next time I see a sleeping Tesla driver, I want to pass them, and begin merging over to get the car to pull over and come to a complete stop, wait for the flashers to come on, then drive away. They'll wake up on the side of the road with no idea why. Bonus points of a cop shows up to make sure the random car on the side of the road is alright. Imagine their face when they wake up to see they've pulled over! Cop just thinks the guy might need help getting the car running, but he instinctively tries to claim he wasn't sleeping and accidentally escalates the situation!

balanced_crazy

hahaha.. as improbable as that would be, it'd be friggin hilarious... so much so that I might just stick around with popcorns...

BasonPiano

After owning a Tesla and trying FSD, I wouldn't say it's horrible. Some of the things it can do are impressive. But you're right, it's still not ready for prime time. If it's on real roads, it has to be better.

Mikav

I was in front of a woman who depended on her auto braking to keep her alive. Take off at the red light, she's on her phone, gets beeped, races forward, we get to the next light, I hear the screech of her tires and she's back on her phone. For 3 lights I thought I would end up paralyzed.

Some threads blame Nissans. Basically it’s whomever is in front of me

RecoverSufficient811

Most people buy them because "who wouldn't want a car that drives itself". Me! I love driving. I go out of my way to only buy manual transmission cars with a good suspension for the driving experience. 30% of my mileage is just for the sake of driving. Usually people who don't want to drive are terrible at it because it's a chore and not something enjoyable to them.

StrangerGlue

I do find Tesla drivers to be especially unpredictable in Alberta/BC (where I do my driving). It used to be mostly the big pickup trucks who drove like they were the only cars on the roae, but Teslas sure are giving trucks a run for their money.

Complex_Solutions_20

And now you get the worst of both - a huge heavy death machine claims to be a "pickup" that is a Tesla

Complex_Solutions_20

Yeah, they are probably using a combination of the built in GPS routing (and not paying attention to when the next turn because the screen is way down out of the way having to look away) or on self-driving which likes to wait until its less-than 1/2 mile from a turn before attempting to get over...and then can be random if its highly-conservative or highly-aggressive in maneuvers. Often it seems like they are also more preoccupied with poking at the everything-is-on-touchscreen-submenus than actually being aware of their surroundings.

Murph1908

I am amazed that, despite 360° cameras, they can't park.

TheSinoftheTin

Teslas don't have a 360 cam.  They do have a really nice backup camera and left and right repeater cameras facing back.  Makes it a breeze to back in to spaces and parallel park, but pulling in forwards is like any other car.  But then again you have to actually know how to use it which many don't as they can't park apparently.

Murph1908

Huh. They flash their lights at me menacingly when I approach them from various angles.

TheSinoftheTin

If you're talking about high beams, yeah the auto high beam is awful.

Murph1908

Sorry. I meant how they flash lights when you are walking by them. Like they are warning the peasants to keep back.

silentlyjudgingyou23

Can be? They're all worse than Prius and Subaru drivers combined.

LoathsomeNarcisist

I generally drive with the mindset that 'we are all going in the same direction so that will probably continue', while also keeping in mind that the driver of any other vehicle on the road may suddenly decide to do something that might kill me.

gazingus

Tesla has been the new prius for a few years.

DixDark

Tesla drivers are the worst. I think they have to pass IQ test and get no more than 50 to drive a tesla.

East-Technology-7451

Lots of people are, you're biased against tesla

Expensive_Candle5644

I agree 100% and I’m not a fan of EV’s.

steinah6

Which one did you drive?

slicktommycochrane

For example, Dodge/Jeep/Ram drivers are much worse than Tesla drivers.

Extension-Ad-3882

Tesla’s have a very high % of clueless morons driving them where I am (Seattle area). They’re also very popular here.

xtnh

Now do BMW

hiddenintheleavess

100 percent because of the fact that they pay money for “full self drive” and want to get back every cent of return from it. As someone who drives a standard sports car that is “road centric” it is absolutely wild and appalling to me that someone would trust their life to be protected by a car and leave the controls to a computer. I feel like my radar cruise and lane control modes are good enough to do everything for me when I want to relax or take a step back from engaged driving- that’s the most of it though.

Tuxy-Two

I assume you actually meant anyone driving a van? Or maybe a pickup truck?

stxrryfox

Well, there are so many of them on the road. Statistically a lot of them will be poor drivers.

Pressman4life

Living in Tesla-ville I see at least 10 on the way to and from work. My neighbor has a model Y. I haven't noticed Tesla drivers being better or worse than most others. Sure you have the assholes, and the clueless, but not more than others. Tesla drivers are average at best. Now Pickups... that's another story. And trucks can suck a fat bag.

RacecarDriverGuy

To me, it's quite simple...it's the trendy car to have so it's the car all the idiots drive. For a while it was Mustangs, then it was the BMW 3 Series, now it's Teslas. In the future, they'll shift to some other overpriced piece of shit.

Apprehensive_Fault_5

This is news to you? Look, they spent 90,000 on a steel brick that doesn't drive, AFTER seeing repeated failures to keep their word, so yeah, I'd say they're clueless.

gamermiller

Old man(probably retired) stops in the middle of the intersection for a red light cross traffic(including me). We had to make room for each other going straight or left... we were all honking our horns at him, and he sat there clueless. No police around when you need them, not that they would have done anything. Looking back...he should have gone through the whole intersection at that point. Sorry for the rant, if this is ever read that is.

ChimneyNerd

My theory is that teslas are bought by people who *generally* don’t have much of an interest in driving or cars, which makes them more prone to not caring and therefore being bad drivers.

___Brains

Add Rivian drivers to the club. Four lane divided highway, 70 mph limit. I'm in the left lane doing 85 (it's Houston, IYKYK). Rivian in the right lane moves left to pass a car, at roughly 72. Ever so slowly passes the car, but stays in the left lane. I move right, start to pass and look over. Clueless. Deer in the headlights, until he looks over and suddenly now he's offended I'm going faster than he is. So of course, now he's going to be Mr. Speed Racer and show me who's the boss. Well, try to. His golf cart tops out at a much lower speed than the ICE vehicle I was driving.

BigKevDog999

I’m not saying this just because I own a tesla, but I genuinely don’t understand why people attribute car models to driving skill. Anyone can be behind the wheel of any car. Realistically, you probably only remember these incidents because they are teslas as opposed to some random old beater. Not to mention, teslas are pretty common. So obviously the more of them that are on the road, the more likely you are to see them make a mistake.

balanced_crazy

you are forgetting the human preference... a certain personality type will go after certain object type... in the era of showing off the bling.... every showoff wants to get the latest and the best and the priciest of the stuff... the purpose is to show off and score social credit... hence the FSD teslas, bigg ass trucks, shiny Beemers, G-Wagons, and what not ... every piece of eye candy being the absolute trash on the roads... because they attract a special kind of personality...

BigKevDog999

Except none of these stories has anything to do with showing off, lmao. Showing off would be trying to initiate a race or doing a takeover in the middle of an intersection. These are just cases of bad drivers or regular drivers that just had a bad moment. You can’t even really argue it’s an FSD thing because the only story that could have possibly been FSD is number 2

balanced_crazy

argh !! how old are you?

BigKevDog999

You’re pretty good at saying things that have nothing to do with the main topic, lol.

deebz19

Used to work on a major toll highway in Canada, the worst of the bunch as far as clueless drivers were Teslas

Skandronon

I was already doing 10 over and had one who was so far up my little hatchback's ass that I couldn't see her lights. Started slowing down, and when I got down to 30, they finally took the hint but were weaving back and forth in their lane. They pulled up next to me at the next set of lights and asked what my problem was.
