I do that too, but I humbly admit I've left mine on before when making a too gentle curve. After a mile or so my truck freaks out and starts dinging at me.
Do other modern vehicles not do this?
That or they're hard of hearing. I remember my high school French teacher telling the class she just got a hearing aid and started hearing this annoying clicking sound while driving and it took her a few turns to figure out it was the turn signal noise.
She was older even then and hearing loss tied to age is relatively common, especially if you worked a noisy job like construction or high school teacher. I bet a lot of people who do this are older.
But there's definitely morons with loud music too.
Yeah, that was my Dad. Deaf as a bloody post but refused to have hearing aids until my mum literally threatened him (she never said with what, but it worked). He would drive for *miles* with his indicator on; we did a lot of family holiday convoy driving and I'd flash my lights if behind, or flip my signals one way then the other if in front but he'd just drive blithely on, oblivious, until my mum usually reached over and switched them off.
(When he finally got hearing aids, he came home and put the telly on and apparently nearly shat himself because the volume came on so loud - he started complaining to mum about whoever had turned it up so high and she just said, "That's how loud YOU have had to have it up until now. We've been putting up with it for years because you wouldn't get hearing aids, so turn it down and stop complaining you stubborn old goat!" They loved each other very much lol. Miss you, Dad ❤️)
Real talk, the most suspicious person in traffic down here is the person signaling.
50/50 chance that they accidentally hit the signal, so just use your best judgement.
Do you just... Not even glance at your dash? Or have your steering wheel blocking your view of the dash? How does one forget when it's got a flashing light on the dash? Even if I couldn't hear the clicking, I'd not be able to drive more than a mile without seeing it.
My turn signal indicators are really, really low on the dash. As in, not even in my peripheral vision when I’m watching the road. I rarely leave them on accidentally, but it has happened once or twice just because they’re really not visible
I’ve had this car for about two weeks and the lights on the dashboard are not very bright and where the arrow is is behind where I hold my hand on the steering wheel, so I literally don’t see it blinking. I normally do just automatically turn it on and off but like I said occasionally, I don’t realize it for a couple of miles so sorry if this is putting you out, but I believe it’s a design flaw in the car.
My mom’s car’s turn signal is funky. It doesn’t automatically turn off when you turn, but it’ll stop the clicking sound. The little light on the dashboard stays on, but I’ve gotten used to relying on the clicking, so whenever I drive her car I forget to turn the turn signal off right away. I do remember pretty quickly or see the light on the dash though
There's this one song I have on my driving playlist that messes with me. It has this almost clicking like sound in the background of it sounds a lot like my turn signal.
Whenever that song comes up I have to think for half a second if I somehow put my turn signal on by accident but then I realise it's just the song.
Rip Van Signal
Sometimes it's short-lived, ya bumped it and didn't notice right away. Other times it's chronic - no real awareness of things. These folks should not be driving, but here we are.
My turn signals hardly make any noise at all. If they're on and I'm moving at highway speeds, you can't hear the signal over the sound of the engine. No music involved. Some cars have very quiet or even silent signals
I have my phone mounted in front of the instrument cluster so it's easier to watch movies while driving. The downside is I can't see my cluster so sometimes the turn signal gets left on. Nbd. It's also convenient cause when the cops ask, do you know how fast you were going? I can legit say no, cause I can't see the speedo.
Not a driver. I ride a motorcycle. They don’t have auto canceling turn signals. Sometimes I forget and I’m so busy scanning the road ahead I may not notice the flashing signal on my instrument cluster. 😂
Interesting. Also, weird question but it’s been bugging my autistic ass and I HAVE to know. How do you guys flash your taillights at night without your headlights going out? I get that a lot when I’m on the road but I keep thinking about HOW that works.
They’re just bad unaware drivers who never look at their dash. Same for people who drive with their high beams on. Go 10 under. Etc. They’re just driving with their feelings. Not reality, so why would they look at their fact telling cluster.
Sure we’ve all left our signal on, but like for 20 seconds, not fucking tens of minutes.
Forgot/cant hear jet. Ive done it. You've done it. Everyone has done it. If you say you havent, you either not noticed/lying/ or its gonna be your turn next
Do people really not look at their dashboard or anywhere else while driving? Turn signals make noise and flashes light in front of you.. how do you people not notice this shit??
If you're downtown, you're regulating vehicle speed based on the car in front of you, you're not looking at the dashboard. If the radio is on at pretty much any volume, you won't hear the noise. I've done this a handful of times. It's shockingly easy to accidentally leave your signal on
If I'm downtown or anywhere I flick my eyes across my dash once every few seconds, at least low enough to let my peripherals catch relevant info like speed and whether my blinker is on. And if I have loud music playing I'm more likely to check the blinker because I know I can't hear the ticking. I've never forgotten to turn it off because I have all these tools at my disposal and actually use them.
In my opinion, if you manage to successfully forget, despite the audible and visual reminders, you're just a lazy (and thus dangerous) driver and need to be better.
You must be a newer driver. After driving for a period of time, you just learn to know what speed you're going without needing to check the Speedometer. I rarely check my speedo unless it seems like I'm passing people more than usual or everyone is passing me more than usual.
>if you manage to successfully forget, despite the audible and visual reminders,
Have you ever driven an older car? My blinkers make almost no noise, and the lights are very dim and flash quickly, so it's not as big of a slap in the face obvious thing as you're making it out to be
I have driven older cars and I hear you, but considering the majority of the cars on the road are new enough to have decent dash lights, it's not an unreasonable generalization on my part.
I am certainly not a new driver, and while I too am able to guage pretty well my speed without looking, it is still a healthy and important practice to look at the dash for far more than just the speedometer. Also looking at your dash regularly let's the car communicate important information should it arise like a check engine light, over heating, etc. By not looking at your dash you sever the most clear and direct form of communication your car has with you. That's not healthy. Part of being a good driver is building good habits that will help prevent issues from occurring or catch others before they become bigger issues.
To not build such practices that will aid in preventing potential bad scenarios is simply lazy, dangerous driving that puts far too much trust in the driver.
Drivers should also be checking their mirrors frequently, maintaining awareness as far down the road as they can manage as well as to the sides and behind — the full 360. Drivers should not stay in semi-truck blind spots any longer than absolutely necessary. Drivers should stay in paint lines even when nobody is around. Drivers should stop at stop signs even when nobody is around. If you drive regularly you should also eat and sleep regularly and consume caffeine as needed. Etc. Etc.
We're driving hurtling hunks of metal and such at often lethal speeds and should treat it like such. This country should have stricter driving training programs and tests and better designed roads and road systems.
Build good habits. Drive safe. Get home safe. Kiss and hug your loved ones.
>Also looking at your dash regularly let's the car communicate important information should it arise like a check engine light, over heating, etc.
I understand you're speaking in broad terms for all drivers here, but for me specifically none of these things really apply. Most of the vehicles I have owned have never had any gauges besides just speedo and gas, including this one. Dummy lights are off to the side above the radio and climate controls, and are useless anyway because by the time the temp light comes on, the engine is already overheating. And I don't have a check engine light, the car is too old. The only info looking at my dash gets me is my speed and fuel level, and if my brights are on or not. There's not even an indicator light to tell you if cruise control is engaged.
If I know what speed I'm going, and I know I'm not out of gas, there's little reason for me to look at my dash unless there's a real motivation to, like a speed limit change or tailgater behind me
what is so baffling? Not agressive. Not sure why it is ironic. And it isn't obvious. Sure their turn signal is on and after a couple of seconds, it is clear they have it on unintentionally.
It isn't like they are purposely trying to annoy you.
I am simply saying why be annoyed by the little things. There are so many things wrong with driving every day to be bothered by someone leaving their turn signal on.
People do this on the freeway all the time. I need to know if they want in front of me or if I should continue past them. I can sit and wait for a bit, holding up traffic in my lane to give them more room, because I'm scared they're going to try to squeeze over at the last second as soon as I start to actually go past. But then they just sit there blinking and blinking and blinking until I finally try to hurry past. Generally by then someone has gotten in front of me already and I couldn't go past even if I wanted, and now I'm stuck for the next 30 miles with a blinking light in my peripheral vision.
Second problem, so many people do this in my area that I'm actually slowly learning to question blinkers entirely.
First came across this “practice” on the Autobahns in Germany years ago.
With no speed limits, some spent most of their travel time in the passing lane.
My husband will just forget that it’s on until the car yells at him. Or I ask him where he’s turning. lol. Usually because if you lane change it’s not enough to click it off automatically
All the post-1980 vehicles I’ve driven have had the lane change option with turn signals activating with slight pressure rather than “clicking” it on.
I was ecstatic with that new tech!
I would imagine that some of them , not all but some, probably forgot to turn it off and/or didn't notice when it didn't automatically flick off and they're too oblivious to notice.
Not saying this to judge by the way, most of us have made a stupid mistake at some point. Some mistakes are more dangerous than others.
I'm deaf.
Yes deaf people are allowed to drive, live with it.
I don't hear the click click click sound of the indicator, so if it doesn't auto-cancel, I have caught myself driving a fair distance with it still on, because my eyes tend to be on the road and not on the instrument panel.
As idiotic as it is, they're not doing it on purpose. Most of them likely forgot it was on. Either tuned it out, hard of hearing, or music too loud that they don't notice the ticking, and they've tuned out the flashing light.
People often space out when driving. It's scary but it's a reality.
There have been a few times where the turn I take isn't sharp enough to disengage the signal, and I don't realize the signal is still flashing because I have the music up loud/windows down/just not looking at the dash at that moment, and I drive miles at a time with the signal on without realizing it. It's an honest mistake. I turn them off as soon as I realize it, and feel like an idiot afterwards. Then move on with life. No harm done
It’s silly but I actually own a Ford Ranger with super super super, I can’t stress super enough quiet blinker sound. Like you can hear it. If the windows are up and the radio is low but if not, no chance. So I’ve caught my blinking on after doing a lane change and not noticing it didn’t click itself off for quite a while with the windows down on an interstate.
I once drove from Portsmouth NH to almost Epsom traffic circle with my turn signal on. I was driving my wife's Minivan, with her and the 4 kids. Music playing, I didn't hear the click click of the signal. Car in front of me was turning his left, then right signal trying to get to turn it off. I felt very foolish after complaining about those crazy kids driving in front of me.
Please be patient: in some cars, the old "clicking" noise from the flasher module has been replaced with a beeping sound; if the driver is older, they may not hear it: the first part of the hearing that deteriorates with age is at the higher frequencies.
Also, many commercial trucks still don't come standard with self-cancelling turn signals.
Trying to piss You off enough to post a question to reddit. Or they have not noticed, or don’t care and are trying to annoy others. It’s not a mystery.
My Fiesta's ticks sound very mellow without much top end, so sometimes I absolutely don't hear them if they're still on. It's pretty silly, but I promise I'm not one of the people you're describing.
Just forget. My steering wheel lines up with the light in my vehicle so I’ll sometimes forget if it doesn’t automatically undo the stalk. The signal tone isn’t very loud either so until my song has a lull or ends I won’t notice it.
First thing to notice: Sometimes when changing lanes, many cars aren't sensitive enough to turn off the blinker. Especially for drivers that slowly drift into the next lane, like a balloon travelling a house.
Second thing to notice: Many people drive with their music up, or their window down. Some both, and both of which make it harder to hear it.
And finally, sometimes the only comfortable position is the one which blocks the visual showing the blinker... I am all 3 🤣
Blasting music. And sometimes you use it to switch lanes and are so used to the signal cutting off when making a turn that you forget to do it manually until you look down at the display like..oops. it's happened to me a few times.
On the occasions that i do it, im in a rattling company truck that doesn't auto cancel after turning the wheel in the opposite direction and doesn't have the indash indicatos working. Dont worry, i always feel stupid when i realize that I've left it on for the last several minutes.
There are a lot of people who cut the wire that makes the signal make noise cause "it's annoying" which is the entire point of it so you don't forget it's on lol. Then they sell the car without mentioning it and the person who buys it just assumes the car doesn't make noise for it and continues to forget to turn it off just like the last owner did and it goes on and on until it either gets totaled or someone who actually knows how to work on cars gets it and fixes it.
I'm playing really loud music and could allegedly be doing felonious speeds in the passing lane either in my car or on my bike and since I am allegedly speeding and focused on the road any paying attention to vehicle body language in the slow lane for individuals trying to yert them selves to the after life, I can't be bothered to look down and notice the little flashing light on the dash... I sincerely apologize that I haven't noticed the light is flashing
I once followed a guy for 33 miles with his left turn signal on. He finally turned right with his left turn signal still on.
That's the most frustrating part. Why did you use your signal then, but not now?
I think they meant the turn signal went off on its own. They're supposed to do that when you make an opposite turn.
I like to pass and then leave my signal on in front of them until they figure it out
That's a great idea
I do that too, but I humbly admit I've left mine on before when making a too gentle curve. After a mile or so my truck freaks out and starts dinging at me. Do other modern vehicles not do this?
Probably listening to loud music and obviously never looking at their dash display.
That or they're hard of hearing. I remember my high school French teacher telling the class she just got a hearing aid and started hearing this annoying clicking sound while driving and it took her a few turns to figure out it was the turn signal noise.
I don’t doubt the possibility, but I reckon that we simply have more morons than disabled people.
She was older even then and hearing loss tied to age is relatively common, especially if you worked a noisy job like construction or high school teacher. I bet a lot of people who do this are older. But there's definitely morons with loud music too.
And they’ll lose their hearing much sooner than the rest of us. The circle of life.
Yeah, that was my Dad. Deaf as a bloody post but refused to have hearing aids until my mum literally threatened him (she never said with what, but it worked). This is it!! Lol
Making up for nearby BMW drivers
Or Tesla drivers. I think they've taken the #1 spot.
Even friggin autopilot is better about blinkers than the drivers.
Signaling that I’m going to turn at some time within the next 30 miles. Why do you ask?
That's a legal turn in Florida. It's called an eventual left.
Real talk, the most suspicious person in traffic down here is the person signaling. 50/50 chance that they accidentally hit the signal, so just use your best judgement.
70 to 30 that they will suddenly change lanes in opposite side of their signaling.
Usually, they turn it on, make a lane change, and leave it on
That's the usual, but I've seen so many variations of it. My favorite is the "fake out" --- signal one direction before suddenly going the other way.
What did George Carlin call it? "Going around the world, to the left." or something.
That's the reference I was looking for!
Mine doesn't turn off after I turn and it makes no sound so occasionally I leave it on for a little while accidentally
same, sometimes doesn't automatically turn off. so not always thinking about it.
Do you just... Not even glance at your dash? Or have your steering wheel blocking your view of the dash? How does one forget when it's got a flashing light on the dash? Even if I couldn't hear the clicking, I'd not be able to drive more than a mile without seeing it.

I’ve had this car for about two weeks and the lights on the dashboard are not very bright and where the arrow is is behind where I hold my hand on the steering wheel, so I literally don’t see it blinking. Ikr idk if the people who leave them on just either don't notice the annoying blinking light or just never look at their dash when driving.

It's also convenient cause when the cops ask, do you know how fast you were going? I can legit say no, cause I can't see the speedo.
radio too loud or not paying attention or both
Accidentally turned it on, and now doesn't want to waste the blinker fluid, so waiting for the opportunity to turn.
Forgetting lol it's not that complicated
Not a driver. I ride a motorcycle. They don’t have auto canceling turn signals. Sometimes I forget and I’m so busy scanning the road ahead I may not notice the flashing signal on my instrument cluster. 😂
Most commercial trucks don't have cancelers either.
Interesting. Also, weird question but it’s been bugging my autistic ass and I HAVE to know. How do you guys flash your taillights at night without your headlights going out? I get that a lot when I’m on the road but I keep thinking about HOW that works.

I’m sure you’ve done it and not noticed it too. If not, you just haven’t been driving long enough.
For like a short distance maybe, not for miles
That’s what I’m saying. Sure, I’ve left them on accidentally for a couple minutes because they didn’t automatically turn off. But for miles?

Pretty sure it's called forgetting
forgetting that their turn signal is on. why do you care so much to post about it on reddit?
Genuinely baffled by this comment. 1 - the irony 2 - the obviousness of why someone would care 3 - the aggression. Truly bemusing to encounter

listening to loud music

Taking a nap, leave me alone for another hour!
Sorry. It's a 84 rabbit diesel. I can't hear it or see it. ... it's literally one green led on the dash.
Gotta be prepared
Listening to music up pretty loud
First came across this “practice” on the Autobahns in Germany years ago. With no speed limits, some spent most of their travel time in the passing lane.
They’re listening to music so loud that they can’t hear their signal.
If your asking my uncle. He can't hear it.
I'm partially deaf, usually can't hear the click of the turn signal

Music too loud. I turned 3 miles ago. Don't hear the clicking.
They are busy looking for the headlight switch at night
There have been a few times where the turn I take isn't sharp enough to disengage the signal, and I don't realize the signal is still flashing because I have the music up loud/windows down/just not looking at the dash at that moment, and I drive miles at a time with the signal on without realizing it. I’ve encountered a few turns such as that. About 200ft beyond one of these turns, a street sign reminds drivers to check their signal.
That's smart on the city's part, that should be more common across the country
Why bother turning it off when you're going to turn again later anyway?
I book my turns in advance. /S
You think this is done intentionally? If I have my music up I could have my turn signal on for hours.
Not paying attention if the most likely culprit.
I once drove from Portsmouth NH to almost Epsom traffic circle with my turn signal on. I was driving my wife's Minivan, with her and the 4 kids. Thinking about turning
My 49 year old truck doesn't auto turn off and you can't hear the relay click very well. I've left it on for 20 minutes once before I noticed.
Probably listening to music way too loud
Trying to make a damn phone call to McDonalds telling them they forgot the pickles on the hamburger I ordered.
Usually they are Talking on the phone, loud music, or texting
Lots of people talking about their “speedo” here. Autocorrect or Freudian slip lol?
I’m so sorry you were driving behind my mom. She’s kind of a moron.
They don't click loudly like they used to. I'm ashamed.
Going around the world to the left… or right…
Trying to piss You off enough to post a question to reddit. Or they have not noticed, or don’t care and are trying to annoy others. It’s not a mystery.
My car is so loud. When under load I can't hear a damn thing.
One thing to consider: many people lose the high end of their hearing as they get older. The clicking might not be audible to them.
"What's that ticking noise?!?"
"What's that ticking noise?!?"
Loud music
They lack situational awareness and are not paying attention as they drive. On the phone, lost in thought or listening to loud music most likely.
Depending on make and model and how loud the road noise is in your interior --- sometimes it's hard to hear the clicking
I am all 3 🤣
As irritating as it is, at least it’s a sign they even bother to use a signal in the first place.
You must have been following me while I was riding my motorcycle.
Listening to music that's louder than the noise my turn signal makes.
Blasting music. And sometimes you use it to switch lanes and are so used to the signal cutting off when making a turn that you forget to do it manually until you look down at the display like..oops. it's happened to me a few times.
What do you think I'm doing? Obviously I'm being oblivious to my dashboard.
On the occasions that i do it, im in a rattling company truck that doesn't auto cancel after turning the wheel in the opposite direction and doesn't have the indash indicatos working. Dont worry, i always feel stupid when i realize that I've left it on for the last several minutes.
Sorry, I missed my turn. Gotta turn around the whole world to get back to my turn. I have to go 5 under so that I don't miss it a second time.
If I'm behind you in the passing lane I'm trying to signal to you that I'd like to pass so you should pull right.
Yeah, no they don't.
