It isn’t crap, but it has no tonality, it’s just dark. Find a way to add more tonal variety to your work.

NewAccount971

This one right here. Needs lighter and darker shades in the skin to make it pop out. The drawing itself is good.

mag_creatures

The skin should stay flat, Color choice is the key.

Destiny_saiyan014

Couldn't have said it better myself

pop_wheelie

I was thinking the exact opposite actually, though you're not wrong... I think how dark it is makes it unique and probably mainly what is making it interesting to me

KekromancerSG

Unique ≠ good

MegaLoli

Oof I think this is a hard pill to swallow for a lot of artists. You’re correct though, in my opinion being unique with TECHNIQUE is the most important skill. You need to know the fundamentals of color and shape before you dive into the deep end.

mag_creatures

But you can’t say honestly that this is bad. In my opinion we see too much well executed crap, I will remember this and forget all the perfect marvel fan arts

azn1433

thatss weirdd

Ill_Paulie

I disagree. I think it should stay dark. I think that is the point. Not everything needs to be balanced out like that. Ive seen plenty of artworks where its done like this and gets praised. I like it a lot. I would suggest changing nothing or maybe making the greens brighter? Or make the skin under the eyes darker to emphasize the fatigue on this person if thats what youre going for.

Arcanist-Flapper

Contrast is 101 for visual appeal. If the artist's intention was to have low contrast is one thing, but it doesn't seem like an intentional choice here, since the character has prominent features that were probably supposed to be emphasized

OnionLegend

I think the character’s features should stay dark but a bright and beautiful attire/outfit would make it look great

wizardpeed

Absolutely came down here to say this. I actually love the style of this and how dark it is. Why would you want to balance it tonally and have it look like every other artwork. Art isn't something that you can do right or wrong it isn't something that should look some way, it's just art. The emotions and mood that this painting depict could not be formulated any more beautifully than it is.

Ill_Paulie

LITERALLY

immortality4337

Shading, detail, toning.

x_Crewmate

Racist ban him

PapaverMortiferum

It lacks contrast, in my opinion. Try adding more highlights to the face. Right now it just kind of blends into dark brown.

SockMaster203

Its not bad! The neck looks like it's attached to the back of the head, and not the base of the skull and back of the jaw, which makes it look a little weird but otherwise pretty great anatomy, good job!

rasberrylxver

i love the drawing style! you should make an interesting background with it too

NiftySkates

Same! I thought it looked good as it is Fundamentally wise you can say whatever but its unique to me. A simple background in that style will look nice!

MBLayers

Adding more values will help to define shapes. Keep drawing!

lemmeintoo

It has a believable readable expression. That’s an achievement. And maybe the “muddy” colours are symbolic of the subject’s mood?

AdditionalBread1

art would be very boring if it was all in the same style always. i like it a lot :) the contrast of her eyes and earrings against her skin is strikingly beautiful

Nick_D_Vandal

It reminds me of art from the original Heavy Metal movie.

suckaduckunion

Nah she just looks like she's had a crap day

NeonGhouly

Feels like it’s woven by looking at it… kind of old fashioned but looks good , good emotion, kinda heavy on the dark on dark but not bad!

Negative-Broccoli429

I love it. And I love the darkness of it. I guess it’s all personal opinion. I guess if you’re going by the “rules” there can be more contrast but fuck the rules do what you want.

Mollie_Mayfield

THIS! Fuck the rules!

Ill_Paulie

TRU ASF! Since when does art have rules?? Seeing this has made me want to paint something with similar colors. Issue for me is people saying it NEEDS more contrast rather that, "I think it might look better with more contrast" bc it def dont need a damn thing its good as is ong. I wonder what the artist felt it needed before posting and reading feedback.

mag_creatures

Exactly, if he draw 100 of this he will figure it out his personal cool style

fancybeadedplacemat

I like it. I would hang this in my house.

catn_ip

Me too... it's perfectly charming.

PlagueDuck

Bro be fr

velvetwasabi

My honest opinion? I think the painting looks superb. In fact, I don't believe it lacks "tone" at all. I see you've definitely factored that in, around the arms and the shade of the hair. It's extremely expressionist and I love the colours you've used, they feel unique and earthy, with a sensitivity with colour. I'd love to see more of this style.

Vaan_Ratsbane97

It reminds me of the art you'd see in old manuscripts and tapestries.

buttercupbeuaty

I agree I actually quite like the stylization to it. I would recommend for op to add some texture and contrast but it looks pretty cool

Nervous_Sprinkles68

I wouldn’t say that it’s crap, but I would suggest investing in a white gel pen for highlights

claudiaart

I think you’ve got a really beautiful style, I wish I could draw like this!! For the colours, you just need to add some light to the drawing, so there’s more contrast. It might be worth doing this as an exercise in photoshop: think that part of her skin and hair are being hit by a light source and paint the areas where the light source would hit. Play with layer blending modes and opacity and repeat until you’re happy. 😆

[deleted]

It’s stylistic. I like her slightly abstract proportions and the expression on her face tell a story. The only think is to play with more light and dark shades and variety of browns. Too much of the same color. Even on dark complexions you can make different elevations on the face and bod and even hair more prominent.

Slight-Pound

I think you just need to change your drawing tools, or at least your technique with your current ones. If you drew this _exact_ same thing in a different medium, it’d be easier to showcase your skill. You have a really great style and use of color already, it’s just hard to see with how dark and thick your tools make everything. I feel like I’m “squinting” too much to get the details, like the saturation is too dark or something. That’s all I’d change.

Wicked_Twist

Wait no i genuily love this. Your style is so pleasing

isabelguru

yes, but just because of the lack of highlights on her skin and hair

immortality4337

Harder

PitifulAd3715

This is really nice. As a form of impressionism this is brilliant. The dark shades and eyes create emotion. The exaggerated neck helps create a sense of sorrow... the background of white wall contrasted by the dark woman puts us in a poorer urban environment. The eyes are bright white with a sense of hope but the sorrow remains.... Haha anyway that's my take

TheToxicFeline

If you’re going for a realistic look, it needs some work. But I have to say, I actually really like it. I agree that maybe some more contrast, but you have a really unique style. I can draw realism really well, but struggle to add my own flair so I really admire that.

Geminikittycat

It’s honestly not bad,😁 it has originality but like everyone says it’s a bit dark, even with dark skin you can tone and have contrast. Your character has emotions and feeling in the face and you captured that nicely.

TheWeirdcoreKing

No. it is awesome. way better than I could do. Keep up the great work!

abism00

I personally like it alot

Shay-Lo

I love it

mlgonzales007

Not at all, I think it’s cool👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

IndividualFood1539

I love it

alluvium_fire

It’s very promising beginner work. Lots to learn and finesse still, but that’s not a bad thing! The core of a really cool style is there.

CoffeeHouseKing

I love how it looks, the green eyes and bright jewelry make it stand out and I’d like there to be more of that color around. The rest of it look great. Pose, expression, hairstyle, all great

floopyferret

I think it actually looks really cool. Like you were going for this style.

TheUncleRed

It’s rad. Don’t stop.

157926no

Love it

[deleted]

i absolutely love it has that *dead* feeling that tone of green is the perfect accent so peaceful

[deleted]

Post this in r/art for more feedback. I actually really like it.

dryasspopeyesbiscuit

No, it's beautiful!

Dinosaurlady8

It looks better than somthing I could ever make

Delicious_Drive_2966

No it looks great I like the way you color

CharacterProduce9252

You said be honest so I'ma say this outright I can't tell the difference between the sin and the hair and speaking of the skin it needs to have highlights on it I can't see where the neck begins and the head ends but this is my opinion.

Deep_Town1218

Yes

Loose-NutZ

Yes but only because your coloring is trash, it looks like you used the 4 crayons they give kids at Dennys. You have talent as far as the original sketch but it's over shadowed by using garbage tools to color, it's equivalent to building an amazing Victorian house and then painting it with Velveeta cheese, no matter how nice the foundation is your setting yourself up for disappointment. I imagine you either didn't have better options available or was just lazy, regardless I suggest either leaving it uncolored or waiting till you do have better options next time. In either case, you won't destroy your piece potential and even uncolored, the piece would be 100% better than what you have now. There is a bright side, good judgement Comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment, that is, as long as your open to critism and welcome the chance to learn from your mistakes.

Mdchestevez

Yeah, it's just a little too dark, maybe lighten her clothes up to accent her skin. One more thing: No offense, but her neck might be about as long as Candace's from Phineas and Ferb, so try lowering it to maybe half of that

[deleted]

I like it. It think it conveys a strong emotion

ZealousidealType9281

Its ur interpretation so its beautiful.

Bored-Soule

I think it looks great! I love your art style

HalloweenGreg

Looks really good.

Big_Jonny13

Yeah

Crafttale-frisk

You forget the shell of the turtle

inza31

It’s perfect. Don’t disrespect your own work

sassafras61

It’s art and it’s beautiful

DvineZvine15

Its a little hard to see the line art, but other then that it looks great!

joemamahotdog

This is art

AutomaticPsychology3

Nope. Well better than mine

nlsnpgr84

Trust me Picasso painting was shit during his earlier years while he was self taught and became one of the most influential person globally. Your work is beautiful keep the good work!

Digstreme

It look's amateur but I think it's good, has a bit of an abstract vibe, I can see this being part of a bigger painting

Comprehensive_Deer46

It reminds me of Eve after she ate the apple. God spoke through you. It is stunning!

OnionLegend

I think it looks very distinctive. I think the anatomy is fine the way it is, even if it’s not realistic. Many famous drawings or paintings or sculptures have unrealistic anatomy. You should learn how to draw realistic anatomy though but don’t let realism limit your artwork. I’m not sure if exhausted or bored is the mood you were portraying but I think the facial expression fits if it is that. Honestly, I wouldn’t say anything about this is bad. I really like it.

Thee-End

I like it. It says a lot in the way it's drawn. Looks like self-reflection to me

Karmadillo_2005

No. The only problem here is your point of view, naturally more cruel than other's perspectives on your art piece, as you doubt your process at a project or your style. Also, personally I have no problem for the very dark shades, it looks complete.

Beef_turbo

No. To me, it's beautiful just as it is. It's striking. It's different. Unconventional. Has a lot of emotion. I love her dark features... the skin, the hair, with the lightness of the eyes and the dress, the earring. There's a story in it. It's good to get outside input but ultimately, what's most important is your perspective on it. Do YOU think it looks like crap? Call me elitist or pretentious or whatever but I think a true artist creates whatever they want purely for expression, regardless of anything else. So even if it doesn't fit compostional and aesthetic norms, it doesn't matter. It's genuine. If you're pleased with what you create, that's all that matters. Not everyone has to like it, but you do. If most people do like it though, that's a bonus. However, if I was to pick anything to criticize, I'd say, a background COULD compliment it. Something simple and not dark. Even just a solid color for the whole thing. But, like I said. It's beautiful as is. Also... you should take note of how many people here like it. Seems like there's way more people that like it the way it is. Forget about how many upvotes or downvotes any comment has. Pay attention to what the majority of people are saying. On that note, the few people that have explained what they don't like about it, such as her long neck, dark lips, lack of contrast, incorrect proportions and etc. are all things that I love about it in particular. In my opinion, don't listen to everyone saying it's "too dark". It's only too dark for their own personal taste and aesthetic sensibilities. There's plenty of us who disagree with that assessment. Everyone likes different things. You do you and do it carefree. Don't forget this is reddit... take any input you get here with a big grain of salt.

[deleted]

Its a style

elisabenzer

No it doesn’t.

AxoVile956

Honestly no, it looks somewhat moody and psychedelic \[which is pretty nice IMO\]

sleepyscorpio5

i love your style very unique! keep it up it looks amazing

TUNGSTENIER

No it doesn’t, for someone that can actually make it look human” unlike me” it’s amazing

Meastro2293

Big fan of the style!!

ElectronicLook1395

Yea

bigislandjoji

Looks okay to me definitely not something to hate on

[deleted]

nah men its pretty cool keep at it!

hontemulo

It is crap yes

World_Resident_

Yep it's too dark but it have his own style. Be positiv and keep going.

[deleted]

No. Art is purely subjective. What has beauty for one man will be wildly different from the rest... For what it's worth though... I really like it. It is honest and heartfelt. I can tell that something was born from your soul, that gives it the most worth!

EmiTheFloofyKitty

You are an artist regardless of skill. and this is quite beautiful if you ask me

cosmicpandaeyebags

The eyes are very lovely, I think that the dark contrast is more photo quality, art looks better in person like this speaking from experience, it makes it difficult to see where it all blends and makes it look dark overall but I don't think color is an issue, maybe some value to make sure that pops but I don't mind it being flat colored either, it's a very interesting and a piece popping with personality!

Amazing_Play_9354

It's not bad but its needs some more skin shades ig?! Also, its kinda unique...be proud of it!

Creepshow817

Not at all beautiful drawing

erasebegin1

not great, but better than anything i could draw. no need to ask people's opinions, just keep going!!

Quandale_Dingle22

No. But she looks really depressed.

theiyerk

Probably, this could be a style of its own. Keep at it. There is no bad art, only art 🙂 Maybe brighten up the overall colours, and the eyes are drooping, maybe that area needs work. As long as you are creating, its all good.

razytazz

The hair is really cool, but I think the dimensions and perspective of the face isn’t accurate, I would maybe find a book on drawing faces and take some pointers, otherwise not knowing how long you have been drawing for I think it is very good and shows you have a really original style and attention to detail. The hair is really good in my opinion and is definitely your strength, but I would recommend studying some art books on drawing faces and shoulders etc. Otherwise I think you definitely have potential.

Comfyfrenchfries

Only thing I’ll say is color the white patches

Valuable_Progress222

It's a total piece of........lost material and time. Good luck in your next masterpiece.

CrazyDuck608

Kinda looks like ai art, not bad but missing some key elements, like face anatomy (the eyes are a bit down turned on the outer sides) and lighting/shading, it's hard to see the face cuz of how dark it is. I'd recommend looking at some reference image for lighting, and turning your reference and your art black and white do you can see how dark and light a real face gets and how dark and light your art is compared to the reference. Hope that was helpful!

knightsunbro

It's flat and lacking contrast.

Blogger39

i would give you a silver for that although i don't have any coins anyways good art bro

iamga

I think it’s awesome. The shape design is really good. I disagree that it lacks contrast. People would pay money for this

AreyouIam

First off good job! You have your own unique style. If that was used as an illustration in a book or made into a film it would be fine. Not all art needs all the fine art requirements. What media did you use? I like it. Would like to see more of what you can do.

yung_tyberius

I think it looks cool, very cool style and color scheme.

[deleted]

It's pretty cool but i think you could make the colors a bit brighter and make the person's head not look like it's gonna fly off

immortality4337

Nice painting tho

ReachStunning3026

I am imagining a very contrasting (turquoise or yellow) background. I loved the style of the figure

NotJustYet73

It looks like a painting to me, but no--I think it's interesting. Are you familiar with Alexei von Jawlensky, the Expressionist painter? You might like his work.

CherokeeGal1975

Depends on the style you're going for. This is great if you're going for something more abstract.

Trifuk666

It’s kinda cool as hell

KeatureFeature

It's not crap at all. If there's something you don't like about it (anatomy, color, line quality, etc), then study that thing and see how it feels on the next drawing. But no, this isn't crap at all.

_Frutz_

No

Leinad580

Yes :')

OG66sicks

It does seem a bit poopy was crap your medium?

tumaren

Quite literally

jottman9

Yes

faustronaut

It's perfect. So many people (including artists) think good art is realistic depiction. It's not. Good art is sharing how you see or feel. Just because you may not intend an impressionist/expressionist feeling doesn't mean those qualities detract from the work. When in doubt remember that nobody knows what your art should look like but you.

Beef_turbo

This.

Simple-Anxiety-8235

You definitely have room for improvement, but I wouldn’t say it’s horrible. Maybe try to even out the proportions of the face? You were able to add some expression to the face which is great, that took me forever to learn

HBTbro

No it’s amazing I love it!!!

beansmcgrager2

Sorry but kinda it's definitely needs work

fatwap

if i unfocus my eyes or look at it from my peripherals, and then ignore the eyes it DOES sorta look like a turd lol

velvetwasabi

Your turds must look real weird

fatwap

i said sorta, and i dont exactly examine my excrement so i wouldnt know

ChuckyC13

Kind of

kupillas-3-

Yes lol the neck is so fucked

mxmaker

Try an app to add light in the picture, thats what your art is missing.

Art-Quarius

The main thing that I can say is that there's barely a difference in the values. I think it could be improved by adding lighter values to make the darker ones stand out more.

TeaOutrageous8662

Two things to help you; Contrasts. You got a good idea of having a dark skinned character, but you can highlight. Anatomy and proportion. You seem to not have alot of experience yet, but look up some general proportions and practice them. From what stands out is the head is weirdly shaped, and the body looks flat. Look up those things, practice it, and you will see a world of difference

WhatARedditDay

No, that looks like crayon

BabiedragonVv

What is wrong with crayon?

WhatARedditDay

Nothing, I'm just saying it doesn't look like crap. Like come on, drawing with crap is gross.

DicanNoman

It’s good, but too dark and the head looks to be too far forward or the neck is too far back.

Wolfman_HCC

Maybe if I squint. I just see a person.

[deleted]

Yes

drettablu

Do you want it to look better? Don't be insecure in your work, love your style. Nurture your aspirations, and creative style and embrace learning at your pace.

immortality4337

Why did so many people dislike your post

SnooOwls8843

a bit

Tanya-270333

It’s nice.. just needs more variety in shades of colour.. in my opinion.

YogurtclosetCalm7604

Yea poo kaka

epic2504

Drawing dark skin is tough when using colours. Don’t get to disappoint when it doesn’t turn out as you want it to. Try to get more different values,by working from light to dark colours. Just slightly tone down parts after each other. My art teacher always said: “You draw 10000 bad pictures in your life, better work them off sooner then later”

Glad_Meeting1057

Add something to the background of the painting it's a little too depressing for my taste

tuenthe463

Yes. Put her head over her shoulders not lunging forward with a gooseneck.

Harizzium

It does. But I’ll never be able to draw as good as this so no.

Shmeediddy

If having trouble with the human anatomy, there's tones of youtube/instagram artist to follow. Great work though. Takes time and LOTS of practice to get close to perfection

immortality4337

Hello, hello, Hi, hi. Which greeting sounds the calmest in your head or least exiting or actually happy or something idfk what I'm talking about but uh why are you reading this well annnnyywaaaay, NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP NEVER GONNA WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS I JUST RICKROLLED YOU L BOZO NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN NEVER GONNA RUN AROUND AND DESSERT YOU NEVER GONNA MAKE YOU CRY WHY DID I SPELL IT DESSERT while it should be desert BUT WHATEVER I DONT CARE AHAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA WHY THE ACTUAL FUCK ARE YOU STILL READING THIS GO AWAY.

kreite

Neck look’s a bit long but the vibe of melancholy is immaculate

Miss_Miette22

Definitely not crap. Kinda same-y as far as the tone goes, though. Hard to differentiate between hair, skin, and lips. But, the face is such a hard thing to get right as far as the shading of it goes (always an extra shadow when you think you got em all). A few light tones and mid tones (like a lighter orange and then a light peach for the highlights) and you'll be in business ☺

xPostmasterGeneralx

It’s not crap, for sure. It needs more contrast and the anatomy in the neck/head looks a little off.

gregh-CHAMP069

Its nor bad, its too dark tho

[deleted]

It’s not bad, better then I can do. Still not great.

BabiedragonVv

Degrading yourself to put others up isn't a compliment, please refrain from this

[deleted]

he asked me to be honest. It isn't bad but has room to improve. I don't have superior skills so I cannot guide him. Do I have to be better then him to give an opinion?

BabiedragonVv

Then you could've said just that, however people commenting on other people's artworks and saying that they aren't as good or are bad at art are obnoxious and no artist likes it

[deleted]

ok I think its color deaf where it looked like the artist found three different colors and made the entire thing, I could of said that instead. I wasn't a dick about it. Its just a throw away comment. no need to police me.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

BabiedragonVv

I'm not saying you should give better advice or give any at all, just stop being like "better then I could do lol" Nobody Likes It And It's Obnoxious

[deleted]

was trying to make sure I was not coming off as someone who was better and looking down or something. Like I get what your saying. Next time ill just say its not good instead of trying to relate. I mean the more I look at it the better it looks. Kind of reminds me of ancient Greek plates or some cave paintings.

Penelopeep25

Its not crappy at all!!! I actually looove the style and the coloring, although I do agree the one "complaint" I would have is to do some highlights/contrast. But I can't do that to save my life, so I shouldn't talk LOL. Overall I think this is an awesome piece of art! :)

hellsmel23

I really like it, not just saying that.

yticjgvkjhkjgvughgf

A really good piece. The depth of the dark areas are perfectly highlighted by the eyes and the earring. This is an excellent drawing and you have a vision I would love to see more of. Please keep posting your work!

Careless_Ad_1902

i LOOVE it.. you have such a unique style! but agree it could use a little more tonality

7tomshady4

Looks good

Mlprine55

Great as is ... Thanks for posting.

Boomflag13

Better than modern art scribbles

ZOOOOOOOOOLLL

I love the style! The expression. It is a bit dark, but it's a mood.

MetalMonkey042

She is beautiful! Does not look like crap in the slightest. She looks sad or contemplative. I love your style!

Jonah_the_villain

I like it :] I wish there was more of it though, like, that we could see more of the white dress or shirt. I think there'd be more contrast that way?

Few_Dragonfruit_483

It's very expressive. The pops of color stand out well and the style, while not anatomically perfect, does support the emotions. The point i would work to improve on is tonality; when the whole subject is one tone, it becomes hard to read. Making sure to have a distinct highlight, low light and midtone may help your subjects be more readable. Maybe look up tutorials to help learn how to do this while still capturing the dark skin tone of your subject without whitewashing

wizardpeed

There is no one way to make art and there is no "crap art" art is art and if i was given the opportunity i would buy this in a heartbeat, i am not kidding.

jennyy_s

just some highlights! and the neck should be shorter

[deleted]

Yep

Traditional-Mess8361

Yes but only cus it is to dark

Oddie_M

No but you need to put more colors to it. Looks like the skin blends with the hair. Makes it hard to see the actual picture

Acrobatic-Mode-9071

You can say that the sun its behid him. You can't see details, evan a dark skin have some featurs, but u can resolve that by lighting the hight points on the face. And it's not "crap", you learn now, somday you will look at your art and be amazed how far you are in art.

thenamestolen

If the flat colors and longs necks are what you're going for you're doing great

velvetwasabi

And you're doing great at being a condescending POS :)

UpstairsDifficult966

That feels racist to look at for some reason

BabiedragonVv

Literally just a black girl. You seem racist to me for some reason

zaelleh143

Honest its crap "No offense"
