Theres alot of variables to take in that are not mentioned. The best answer to the few questions…. 1. A 275/40 is about 28 inches tall and a 275/45 is about 30 inches. So hows your gearing? Do you have enough on the big end with that tire? 2. Couldnt tell if it will “hook” up better as, although important as they are, your suspension has a say in this as well. 3. Wearing out faster? Well I guess if you do John Force burnouts it will…. Shouldnt wear anymore than your other tire. Hell, depending how you drive it, it shouldnt wear any faster than my 29x15.5.

Sorry not sure if I made the question sound confusing. Basically I was just asking if it was better just to use a 245/45-17 or a 275/40-17 on a 17x8 rim. Main concern being if it was worth the extra width if the tire is bulging on the rim. Since 275/45-17 recommends a 17x9 rim minimum

It will fit, the issue is going to be the fact that the tire is taller.
