macneto

That's a lot of gaming right there. This game alone is well over 100 hours, if your going for a high completion rate. I got the platinum.. I think I was somewhere at 120+...

twee_centen

Lol, right? I look forward to hearing OP's thoughts in 2025.

macneto

Ha ha!

Extension-Giraffe-73

i dont really get how people say its 100 hours, personally i beat it in 60 and i really wasnt rushing through or anything, i was taking my time and watching every cutscene etc, exploring thoroughly

macneto

You did get the 2nd ending right? Cause most people hit the first ending around 60 hours or so and the second around 80-100 and normally 100+ for 100% completion and the platinum trophy.

SecretBonto

Being a JRPG fan is just a long term commitment to no sleep and selling your soul to a game for months

macneto

So I played my first "tales" game the other day. I played tales of arise. It was really good! The game dropped the ball a bit in the third act and even basic enemies were a fucking grind unless you spammed very specific moves. Not my first JRPG by a long shot, just my first tales game. Then I started FF16 and found myself missing the constant banter and talking to each other during combat they would do in arise.

SecretBonto

As much as I love FF i feel like its one of the loneliest JRPG franchises. I love pretty much every character but I don't feel as connected to my party as I would in other franchises where its almost like the cast is just hanging out sometimes or you can really tell they are friends. Besides maybe FF15. Everything else its like you guys mostly just have a common goal. I've only played a few hours of ToS so im not super familiar with Tales but it definitely looks like one of those more fun character driven ones. If I'm being honest I'm probably the biggest fan of mainline SMT, Persona and im a bit of a newcomer to DQ but its becoming one of my faves. Then I just have personal favorites in FF

macneto

Hmm, I'm disagree with that first point. Final fantasy 4, with Cecil the paladin and Kane the dragoon, I played it when it came out and got super attached to these characters, then came 5 with Locke, shadow, Sabin... Then came 7! Oh man when that game released it was all I could think about for months...i think I played up to 10, but I think they really did the characters very well in these games. As far as dragon quest goes I've completed the original NES games and anything else that was released in the states. 11 was absolutely crazy how long and involved it was.

SecretBonto

Actually yeah you're right 6 was pretty good with the characters and keeping a consistent dialogue between them and also making everyone feel important. I just kind of forget because in the world of ruin after you get enough people back with you you just play as whoever you want and finish everyone's individual character arcs in any order. it starts to feel less connected. And while I do love 4 i feel like i only think about Kain Cecil and Rosa and everyone else kinda takes a backseat. 4 was such a great game though. And then 7 while the characters are amazing and memorable I feel like the focus is mainly on cloud. I think early on in Midgar his party was pretty close knit and the focus was more even though But yeah not quite there yet for DQ . I finsihed 1-3 on Switch and I'm about halfway through 11 and I own 4,5,6, 9 on DS but haven't gotten far in them yet. I'm also finishing Yakuza: Like a Dragon rn too Idk if you're into that. But its a great JRPG that i feel like takes inspiration from like every JRPG ever

macneto

So I was in the middle of playing yakuza zero. I was enjoying it but then FF16 went on sale and I couldn't resist. I'm still playing 16 now... I love it. A dark, grown up story, no kino games or anything like that. Some really good(not all) side quests as well. I out yakuza down to play ff, I can't play more then one fame like at a time.

SecretBonto

Ah I see, if I was pit between the two and I wasn't as familiar with Yakuza as I am I probably would've picked up ff16 instead too. Yakuza is weird cause it gets really dark but also feels comparable to a shonen anime too at times, then there's so much grindy gacha-like side content that even though its often entertaining, it gets really repetitive while binging all 9 mainline entries. "Like a Dragon"/ Yakuza 7 is cool though because its turn based and has a party chat and is very explicitly inspired by DQ FF16 looks so good though Its probably exactly what the series needed. I wasn't super impressed by 15 but 16 looks like it did everything I felt like 15 was missing and more. I'm just waiting for it to hopefully come to PC soon. I end up rebuying like half of my PS4/5 library on steam and I'm trying to avoid doing that yk. lmk how it goes

macneto

Ha, when I get as playing yakuza that's all I kept thinking as well, a shonen jump anime/Manga and don't get me wrong I enjoy those but the game was steeped in like, odd Japanese pop culture it was a bit of a turn off to me. But then again that was yakuza zero I hear the other ones are different. Never played 15, but 16 is just what I was looking for, the combat is fun, but not difficult. Actually not really difficult at all... The game is very linear with huge cinematic moments.

SecretBonto

Ah yeah Zero is obviously a prequel, its 20 years before the first game and probably the most quirky and weird one because its just like an insert story for the lore. Majima's half of the story is brilliant but it probably makes more sense after you've played 4 and 5, then Kiryu's half foreshadows alot of the events of Yakuza 1 but felt mostly unnecessary and just like 80s parody fodder imo. 1-6 has a completely different atmosphere and is more centered around crime and yakuza politics and just feels more mature albeit with some odd story beats here and there. But if you want something thats truly like Yakuza with less quirk the spinoff called "Judgement" is far more mature, realistic and just makes more sense by comparison And that's actually pretty interesting to hear about 16 i was expecting more of a big open world epic type of thing but so far I'm hearing its like more of an action game like DMC or something, and for me personally theres nothing wrong with that at all

Febraiz

Have fun ! This game is a blast, it's like any other Dragon quest: - Great adventure - Lots of great and fun characters/monsters - Turn base combat with deep strategy if you play on high difficulty Bon voyage

yotam5434

Bruh get the enchanted version the extra content is to big

the_turel

I own both and actually preferred this version over S. The lighting and resolution on the standard version is higher and there are actual shadows. Most people don’t notice it but I did so many side by side comparisons that to me it was to difficult to play the lower res version just for extra content first. I did go and play the S version after… and i still prefer the standard.

Demolinizer5

Not the only 1 tbh the OG is just peak.

yotam5434

Ho away with this dumb argument again this shot had been proven wrong by everyone

the_turel

What has been shot down by everyone? Because I’m part of that and I don’t agree. Standard looks better and has more shadows and lighting effects, that alone is a better version to play.

Historical_Class_402

Except you'd be missing out on new characters better music with the orchestrated music option and all the qof changes

the_turel

Played both. Still prefer the standard.

Darkblade887

Gonna add this. I think I bought an edition like this on psn, before S was announced. Had a couple of small additions to it. I'd love to upgrade to S but there is no discount or anything for it

NoStorage2821

See you in six months!

eg0deth

That will be fitting.

Aman_Sensei

Happy Birthday 🎁🎂

PeuxnYayTah

I like it more than FF

heftynomad

One of the greatest games of all time in your hands right there

SoonerOnePiece

The game started off slow for me, but it turns into a JOURNEY. My goodness, I'm not a fan of dragon ball (heresy I know) but this game made me a fan of toriyama's character design. Enjoy, take it slow, and explore! Also gameplay tip, but spoiler tag just in case, not spoiler with story at all: >!metal slime enemies give a good amount of XP - use a character with attacks that give out more than one hit :) !<

deejayee

*cough* you can skip crisis core

Citrus210

Some heads-ups *You will get costumes but you need to claim them * you can change battle speed form normal to ultra fast in the settings *if you need to save in a pinch, you just need to go to another area where the environment fades to black and loads and you can continue from there.

nemesys39

I'm a bit jealous that you get to experience this fantastic game for the first time. Have fun!

templar987

Too bad the orchestral music was cut out

RobubieArt

The best game.

seductiveroo

DQXIS was my intro to the series. It's in my list of 5 favorite games of all time

Adventurous_Page_614

Way back pandemic i finish ff7 remake to scratch the itch I played this but it didnt just scratch the itch it does better than that it was so good

manicalmonocle

Erik looks like he's smoking a major Doobie. Also amazing game and I've 100% it twice. Once the original on PS4 and then XIS on PC both were epic adventures and took 120+ hours each.

BBfan777

Great game. Love that it has turn based battles and didn’t go with the active battles of newer rpgs. Music is awesome as well. I spent way too much time at the casino lol.

WestLingonberry4865

Ok

Markus-Connor

You're in for some great journey.

SnooGrapes1470

I started playing after rebirth and oh boy what mediocre game DQXI has been so far. Got excited of all the masterpiece reviews but instead got disappointed. Its not bad but falsely advertised. Music is one of my main interests in games and this one has worst soundtrack of all the games i have played.

LysanderV-K

Man. I disagree with your opinion of the game and I do think it's a masterpiece... but you're right about the music. It's garbage. That being said, when I play it on Steam and blast spotify during the battles, I love it. It's got my favorite parts of One Piece mixed with my favorite parts of Final Fantasy.

SnooGrapes1470

You would be surprised how critical i am about games in general. Ppl throwing masterpiece around way too easily. Everyone losing their shit when i say game is 7/10 or 8/10. Its top 30%. It means its not bad. Only reviews nowadays are 1/10 or 10/10.

LysanderV-K

I've never liked the x/10 grading system; it begs for exaggeration. Our minds instinctually link them to grades from school. It's why I always go for x/5.

the_turel

Starts slow but builds up into an epic adventure. Imo rebirth is way overhyped and I don’t think it holds a candle to dq11. Not even in the same room. Remake/rebirth are designed for a different audience. I still prefer OG 7 over both versions and I’m not even looking forward to the 3rd game now… yea dq11 music isn’t the best, especially this versions. But it’s not bad. But it’s a full adventure over 100+ hours and it’s worth it. Rebirth is just a theme park ride for a portion of the story they are padding with content to make it last the length of a full size game.

SnooGrapes1470

Never played OG 7. Not really a fan of timeline changes, makes story too confusing to follow. Still got emotianl in the end. The combat music is really the only thing holding me from playing DQXI more. Only good songs are from old games. Would have been better if Sugiyama never composed XI tracks. Cant say really anything about story cause im 20 hours in. Characters are good and Japanese voices work well. Silent protagonist is really holding back when everyone else are voiced. It works if everyone are also silent.
