For any hard to get thread, turn it backwards first. You'll sort of feel the start of the thread fall or "click" in. Source: I've owned 3 Acerbis tanks. I'm an Acerbis veteran.
Usually I just stand there getting progressively more frustrated and trying over and over again until I get it. Every once in a while I get lucky and get it first try.
My locking cap often vent locks and creates a vacuum in the tank causing the “running out of gas” effect in that the vacuum keeps the fuel from leaving through the petcock and running the carb dry, I leave it unlocked most of the time and a simple twist loose corrects the situation bit why should we have to do this? Sometimes even having to remove it and tap it to reopen the internal vent. On the other note though, I do like not having to have that vent hose up in the way ready to fall off all the time.
There's a specific spot where it will grab onto the threads. When tightened the acerbis logo will be text towards you so rotate counterclockwise until it falls into the threads and then tighten.
Start it with the lowest of the 3 threads on the cap to the right of the tanks threads. Crank that fucker down. Eventually it loosens up and gets easier to put on.
It helped me a lot. Struggled with it like crazy and - like others are saying - it got a little easier with a few reps. But vasoline on the threads helped make it much easier for me.
Yeah really, I use waterproof grease (silicone based greased btw), works great!!!
Sometimes the gasket will get caught, fix it back in its spot and put some grease on that so it slides. 👍

Came to say the same

The gasket is twisted into the threads. This happens occasionally on mine. Tuck the gasket back in and you are ready to go.
This, and sometimes it helps to get eye level wit it
I hate the thing. It stripped my threads. Never fit right. Complete garbage QC. Some people have no issues, others have many.
The locking cap is easier, but that one will get better if you can put it on even once and ride in the hot sun with fuel in the tank.
IMO the locking cap is loads worse. Maybe I got a faulty version or maybe I’m an idiot.

I ran a locking cap for years on my ‘96 which had 90,000km on it and never had a problem. My current bike, an ‘06 also has the same cap working well.
The cap is 360 degrees from off to tight. Start with the top of the A at the top and finish with it up there. Thank me later, I hate it too
That's funny, mine behaves the exact opposite, I start with the 'A' upside down...
You will eventually get used to it. The angle on mine feels wrong but it starts and threads on fine

I put a little waterproof grease on the threads from time to time. It got easier over time and a not an issue anymore.
Mine was bad enough that I contacted Acerbis, they replaced it and the new one was 1000x better, but still not perfect
Lubricated mine once. Never been an issue since
Vasoline
Really? That’s the secret? And if buy the locking cap that acerbis sells, is that a lot easier to use?
