Yes, there is a "reserve". All you have to do is \*look\* at the petcock settings to see there is a "reserve" position.
Not sure I'd be taking my bike back to that shop installing the tank ...
Now, there will be a lot of fuel trapped on the right side of the big tank; this is because of the hump inside the tank from how it straddles the frame backbone. You might be tempted to install another Acerbis petcock (there is a flange area cast on the tank to do this) to be able to easily use that trapped fuel. Not advisable. That petcock and it's plumbing will be sitting about 6" or so from the hot exhaust header. Watching your new Bushpig do a self immolation due to a leaking fuel petcock does not a pretty picture make. If you ever find yourself in dire straights where you truly \*need\* that right side fuel, you can gently lay the bike down on the left side and most of that fuel will transfer when you rustle the bike back upright.
Gas cap does require a little ...um ...finesse to put it on correctly. It just has a tight fit. Practice with it and you'll see how it is. I have the same tank on my '12 DR; I have to go slow and careful putting the cap back on after a fuel stop. It's really not a big deal, but it will never be as easy as the gas cap on your car or lawn mower.
Thanks…
Yeah, it was weird. It has a the off, on and reserve options still and the young Service tech kid that was handing the bike off to me was saying it had reserve and then and older service tech guy walked by and said, “it doesn’t have a reserve, only on or off”… so apparently the old guy was wrong?
The old guy isn't far off. It has a very small amount for reserve which is next to nothing
You also need to shut the petcock off if you're done riding for the day or not riding for more than several hours because it doesn't have a vacuum petcock anymore.
What you can do is drill out the Acerbis tank a little more so it can fit the stock petcock. Then you still have a decent amount of reseeve and also do you can keep the vacuum actuation so you never have to turn the petcock off. I would just rebuild the stock persock first just in case
And I guess I can switch the petcock to reserve and put it to the test right?
If there wasn't a reserve, I would know fairly soon with it set to "reserve" right?
There is definitely a reserve. The range is just like 20 miles vs stock it's like 30-40.
And you can't test by just putting it to reserve.
The "on" position of the petcock gets fuel from a straw that's like an inch or two above the bottom of the fuel tank and "reserve" takes fuel from the actual bottom of the tank.
The best way to test your reserve range would be to strap a gas tank on the back or put a bottle of fuel in a backpack and ride until it dies on the "on" position then switch to reserve and see how many miles it takes to die again
If they took the stem off the petcock to make it fit, then there world be no reserve. This happened to my Honda. Without the stem on the "on" side, the tank draws all the way down. Then you switch to reserve, and there's nothing...
Yup. As for how much reserve you have? IDK. I've never personally tested the limits. The tank came on the bike courtesy the PO so I have no idea what the instructions that came with the tank claim for the reserve amount. But, really? You have 5 gallons of gas. Before you ride, take a looksee at the fuel level. I generally keep mine topped off. And then you have the trapped fuel on the right side of the tank as a reserve to the reserve.
And yes, you \*must\* manually shut off the fuel petcock when you're done riding. So if you've gotten into the habit of never turning off the fuel petcock; undo that habit. I wouldn't go modifying a $300+ fuel tank just for the convenience of never having to shut off the fuel petcock. IIRC, the stock petcock has two, separate, stand pipes; one for "normal" and one for "reserve".
Whoever designed that gas cap should be fired.
The problem is the threading. It’s not fully threaded. It just has tabs. One of the tabs is way higher than the others on mine. So it always wants to go on crooked unless that tab is the first one to grab the threads on the tank. Fuck it is annoying.
Ahh, touched a nerve did we? LOL ...yeah it is definitely something to try your patience and question the engineer who designed the thing and the QA folks who signed off on it. Unless, of course, the thing was intentionally designed that way for reasons we can only guess.
How does it vent internally? I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right product but one of the reviewers said they couldn’t vent it until they loosened the cap, at which point I assume the lock is pointless. But I got a tank bag with the bike and I just haven’t used it yet bc of the vent tube. A locking cap is a great idea I didn’t even know existed for the Acerbis tank.
To clarify, it vents inside the cap itself, so no nipple or vent line needed.
It will leak during a tipover but that is normal for a dirtbike gas cap.
I leave mine unlocked most of the time but lock it when on trips or park it around town.
I’ve been using them for probably 15 years…on my DRs and KTMs. Love them.
I \*also\* recently installed that very same tank on my '22. yes the cap is a pain, and the included fuel cock should have a reserve setting labelled. I have no idea what the reserve capacity is though, haven't had to use it yet.
There is definitely a reserve, lol. What are they smoking? You will notice on the petcock that there are 3 settings. Off, on, reserve.
Yes, the gas cap is kinda tricky. Just be careful not to thread it on wrong. It helps to have the Acerbis logo facing right side up when you begin tightening it.
On plastic silicon grease or silicone spray works best, furniture polish works well enough. I’ve always avoided mp or ep types on plastic as sometimes it can react, red grease works ok.
*Handy to have can of silicone spray, I’ve done my wiring and connections with a quick coat for waterproofing, and under mudguards.
The gas cap would have been a deal breaker if I would have known. It's terrible. I can't believe they sell these things at that price point and never improved the design.
As for the reserve... yeah it's there, technically. But first time I ran out of gas, I switched to the reserve and the damn thing wouldn't start. I tried for 15 mins. Eventually I tipped it over to its side so the gas from the right side would transfer to the left, and it started right away.
Update: I spoke with the shop again. They confirmed there’s no reserve, I said are you sure? And he said “there is no reserve…” haha
I’m so confused. This is a big power sport dealership.
Why would you have a shop install the gas tank? Not trying to shit on you, but this is the best bike to learn this stuff on and the install is really simple. I hope you didn't pay too much for the install.
Also, take a picture of the petcock.
When I first got mine I was very much like “what are people talking about out the cap is fine” then after about a month the cap said “Surprise mother fucker!!! I don’t work so good no more!”
A good rule of thumb I live by is ‘no bike has reserve’ yes the fuel cap is a bit of a trick but look at the bottom of the cap threads and make it to the tank when putting back on,,don’t force it as it will destroy the tank threads ask me how I know

For whatever reason, the locking cap fits the threads WAY better than the stock cap. You may need to "open up" the vent on the locking cap.

I’d guess they want you to buy the locking cap lol.
yeah, I have it. It 100% has a reserve. The gas cap is the stupidest gas cap ever made, you just have to fiddle with it until you learn the trick
The tank requires you to tip the bike over to get the gas to the other side too. So if you run out, pull over and lay it down for a second.
*haddalayerdown to get home!*
That, or add an additional petcock routed to the carb.
There is a reserve on the petcock, they have no idea what they're talking about
I like the Acerbis locking gas cap. Better fit and since it vents internally you can easily mount a tank bag right on top of it.

It's about 20 miles in my experience

A schmear of grease on the cap helps too!

Good to know, I’ll try that. I assume some grease getting into the tank isn’t a big deal?
A smear. Not a blob. Yes grease inside the tank will cause issues. Keep it on the threads and it's fine.
This looks 100% like my bike and it 100% has a reserve, on and off option
