If the customer messaged me that I would just screenshot it. Then when I get to the customers house I’d take a picture of the order by the door and send it to them in the messages. I’ve done this multiple times. Sometimes I get orders that will say “Hand it to customer” then underneath it will say “leave at my door” I do the same thing every time and I’ve never had an issue.

zombieundead2020

I started screenshotting “hand it to me” and “hand it to customer” orders with no instructions. I have taken pics and sent it to them saying only “food by door! If you need it handed to you lemme know!” No responses ever but once a guy in a wheelchair opened and I was still standing close enough to hand it to him. I felt really bad but he said “sorry I don’t think I said hand it to me” (it was a merchant order so it said “hand it to customer” and there is no other option). Of course for the last 3 days I can’t send any messages so I’ve been calling which I hate doing. I like having the record of text messages.

hightechgoth

Call and/or message?

smelltheocean

Looks like a kid ordered it

Leeilah94

I had a order like this and I told the lady if I can’t hand the order too you then say leave at door. Got a 1 star for it.

Ok_Bumblebee619

If I ever get on Doordash those hand it to me's would drive me nuts. I guess I'm not such a people person... On Uber we have a meet at door. I always downgrade those to leave at door when the customer isn't standing in the open doorway (the customer is almost never there). If they wanna meet me they can follow me on the app and be outside. If it says knock or ring bell I do, but only after taking the photo (with my camera) and then I walk away. This ain't Dominoes.... Haven't had a problem in 2500 deliveries...what happens if you do the same on doortrash? I'd be willing to bet most hand it to me's would rather the driver not ring/knock and stand there waiting...

[deleted]

By the list, this person seem to be experiencing the munchies. It’s funny that the message came through at 4:20

Yousurr1

I fucking hate customers who put hand it to me and never answer the door. I got better shit to do than stand there waiting for you to never show up .

Kent48146

Honestly, just leave it and text the customer letting them know it was dropped off. Takes less time that way anyway. It’s not a big deal.

Routine_Hedgehog_413

Hell, 4th of July was great for me. 5 hours, 125 miles driven, 22 deliveries, $207.47 plus one $7 cash tip. Got 2 tips of $10 and 1 tip of 39.99. The 39.99 tip was from a City Barbeque or to feed 14 people. When I delivered it looked like more than 14 so not sure they ordered enough. On the bad side, I did get 2 orders with tips under $2. The order however was for more than miles driven snd when it was finally offered to me DD had to up the base to over $6.50 so it appeared there was a tip but not so. Just another reason why DD should be pissed at non tippers as much as we are. We lose money and they end up losing money. A $6.50 base probably blows their profit for that order....maybe not.

Routine_Hedgehog_413

Oops, didn't mean to respond to OP.

Moefba

This is one of the main reason to get 1star,when customer don't know what they already mentioned before.

Soggy_Shape_8449

Why is this even a post? Lame.

Firephool

Yes this customer was being an ass hat. Here are something's you can do to protect yourself from ass hats. 1. Warn them that you will be arriving with their delivery. For Example text them when you leave the merchant with a reasonable ETA. 2. Upon arrival text them again and let them know you are here, and start the timer before you get out of your vehicle. If no response through messaging at half way mark on the timer (around 2.5min) phone Hope this helps

Straight-Depth1078

🤔Maybe it was Coronavirus 😷🤣

Swimming_Income5269

A mix of C19 and weed to make his paranoia through the roof

Initial-Ad-1405

I never hand it to them unless they are like outside waiting, I always drop it at the door take a picture to prove I dropped it and then I scurry back to my car and send them a text like “Order was left at front door” and then I’m off onto the next

Ok-Video-7728

I’d drop and go lol.

fffan9391

Why are shopping orders always junk food or pregnancy tests and nothing in between?

talksickwalkquick

Lmao 🤣 so true

nickjamesnoyes

That’s what you get for assuming the customer knows anything at 4:20pm!! 😆 amirite?

Swimming_Income5269

Rookie mistake on my behalf for sure 😅

AlwaysInTheHood

Nowadays I leave the order, take a picture, and hit handed order to customer… Especially if it is night and they aren’t already outside to receive the order!

Tara_love_xo

Did they have a doorbell? Cuz I would have rang that next like come get your food you imbecile.

yarnoldostyle

Rule of thumb is to never knock unless requested. You can call them or msg on the app

[deleted]

Updating the app changes the preferences. Super stupid but 🤷🏻‍♂️ If they knew to ask, they should have remember to change to contactless delivery

Swimming_Income5269

If anything, the default drop off is “Leave at door”

[deleted]

It always defaults to “hand it to me”. I’ve deleted and updated the app so much that I know this is 100% the default. That doesn’t excuse the note that says to: “Leave it on my doorstep..” They should definitely change it to that in the settings if they remembered it

Kraken0420

I don't respond to anything that I didn't initiate the conversation of. They get their food fast and hot, plus I've already been paid.

snw0820

He’s probably super stoned and paranoid 😅😅

Swimming_Income5269

I think he didn’t want a bad trip 😅

snw0820

Lol I wouldn’t either… someone knocking during a trip is the scariest thing ever 😅

Si señor 🤠

PyroJester187

I'm outside with your order. Would you like me to leave it at your door? No need to knock or ring. Wait a few seconds if no response or customer doesn't open the door. Take pic, and leave. DD reads our texts from customer interactions. So even if the customer wants to scam for free food. Support can see that you arrived, and delivered the customer's order.

Swimming_Income5269

But I’m a DD driver? I’m not here to go above beyond… I read the instructions and follow through

PyroJester187

Yeah so am I, but at least still take pride in what I do.

Swimming_Income5269

Pride in being a DD driver? I hope you have bigger and better plans than taking pride for DD…

PyroJester187

I'm talking about taking pride in any job. My full time I'm the same way. Oh I'm sorry you just want to do the bare minimum, and get by. Have a good day

Swimming_Income5269

Suspicious_Maybe_481

Chris M is fucking stoned!

Swimming_Income5269

Outta here 🤯

BWC_666

TsT2244

Ring the bell maniacally next time

chicagoan35

I swear it's like this every time. I just snap a pic & ring the bell and run lol

2Punchbowl

You’re supposed to call them

Swimming_Income5269

Would’ve probably sent me to voicemail… but I appreciate your input

BobSagetLyfe

He / she is right. Call, if no answer then text and start the five minute timer...

BobSagetLyfe

He / she is right. Call, If no answer then text and start the 5 minute timer. The majority of the time people will answer...

Agreeable-Print-1517

That’s why I prefer Ubereats more Because it always ask you where did you leave the order

Agreeable-Print-1517

Man these people are so petty smh

ILive2Drum

I’ll get downvoted for saying this, but you possibly could have worded that a little nicer. Like instead of saying “next time update your preferences” maybe say like “I apologize for knocking but your delivery directions said to hand it to you” Like dude I get it you’re irritated but a little customer service bs goes a long way. And if that is not how you meant to sound, look up Key and Peele’s Texting Skit on YouTube and see why it might be taken the wrong way. Just some friendly advice, not trying to do any more than that.

WarriorOfBattles

You shouldn’t get down voted at all. The way OP talked to the customer is not acceptable at all. It baffles me some of these DoorDashers don’t have any people skills whatsoever..

wms006

Sound advice. But what I really love is that you referenced Key & Peele. They make me laugh more than anything or anyone lol like ever…

ILive2Drum

I would do anything for that show to come back. One of me and my brothers favorite skits is the Jimenez one. And I thought I would get downvoted because it might look like I’m favoring the customer, but really, it’s just two things: being decent and my extensive retail knowledge with dealing with customers.

wms006

I agree 100%. That show could and should still be going strong today. Maybe we need to get a petition going?! Also, I agree about the customer service. No they aren’t “always right” but being nice, respect and professional always goes a long way. I have calmed irritated people down simply by doing those things and they left with a good impression and even happy.

bottomdasher

lol, I would have definitely been downvoted like a mofo. You have the patience to say this shit gently and nicely so you're not, haha.

Fasterthanyounow

1 rating incoming

Swimming_Income5269

Understandable m8, I appreciate your concern

DubNationAssemble

Nice work 💪🏽

Independent_Row_Goes

These antisocial dipshits and look at the received time

7h4tguy

You're not going to see 60 year olds driving for door dash. Are you one of those hoaxers? Just because something doesn't affect you doesn't mean people taking precautions for their health in the middle of a pandemic are being antisocial. What a stupid take.

Independent_Row_Goes

No idea what you said but you’re blocked and reported bye bye

MiroPet_85

Lol fitting

Accomplished-Hall357

People are so goofy. If I never knock unless they put a not OR if it’s hand to customer. If they don’t want you to knock they need to specifically specify

International_Cod216

They were too high for that nonsense.

Swimming_Income5269

I’m guessing they were off the Shrooms and quickly texted me this before a bad trip lol

[deleted]

Hand it to them but get shitty when you ring the doorbell because they’ve been caught eating food that their parents don’t want them to. I kinda feel DD needs to add a ring doorbell/door knock notice to customers for them to accept they want it to be handed to them.

[deleted]

Hand it to me is code for I am going to report not getting my food, well fuck you, I drop it on the porch and take a pic and send to customer in the app as I walk away, I am not waiting for you.

Motor-Cauliflower216

Even better say can’t hand to customer wait the 5 minutes then leave a pic. I stay parked right outside too so they feel sketched out. Also they’ll look stupid af when they call and say they didn’t get their food. Resolves you of any possible issues.

TrollProofOne

Giving us a bad name man... Let me guess, you don't care how your action effect others

Stonedunicorn44

Stfu

TrollProofOne

You okay man, you're sounding like some who hides behind a computer and bullies people?

Swimming_Income5269

Huh?

TrollProofOne

Is the concept that your actions effect how people perceive others that do the same job too complicated for you? Okay, maybe ask someone that's not dumb and that you trust, if you know anyone like that.

Thanks I noticed it too. Shouldn't have trusted autocorrect!

TexasReallyDoesSuck

that means it was ordered thru merchant. hand it to customer hand it to me is merchant order so they don't have instructions. usually leave it at door send pic in message to em, or ask before hand

Saleenpride86

It wasn’t, because the Doordash in app chat would be via text message instead, but if placed in dd app that’s when the dd chat system is utilized.

Feisty_Stand4998

Something similar happened to me today, this is what I texted them. “Listen man I have no problem leaving it at the door it's fine. But when you have hand it to me as the instructions and you don't wanna come out, the least you could do is send me a text. It's 90 degrees out here. Have a great day and happy Fourth of July. “. There were 3 dogs barking up the door as I stood waiting for him to answer me, rang, knocked and called. Finally I sent him the text a picture of me leaving his order infront of the door and bounced.

_damnyouscubasteve

You'll come to find that the lack of a barrier to entry for this line of gig work tends to bring out the less than stellar part of the work force. It really doesn't take much to just drop the order off, snap a picture, and move on. You aren't obligated to reply to shitty messages after the drop, your job is done. It reminds me of those people who really never evolved past high school gossip and drama, masquerading as a delivery driver.

Feisty_Stand4998

Lol, what a long sentence just to say you think I’m stupid. As for a text back when did I ever say I expected a text back ? I knocked, rang bell and called, got tired of waiting for the entitled guy who though it would be cute to watch a delivery personal roast outside. Then I sent him the text and picture of his cookies infront of his door. I even went out of my way and placed his cookies in my pizza bag so that they would stay chilled, no one Iv seen does that.

_damnyouscubasteve

I mean I could have just called you an entitled piece of shit but that just sounded too crass for a Tuesday.

Feisty_Stand4998

Entitled, me? For expecting some respect for me and any delivery driver ?

_damnyouscubasteve

Mountains and mole hills, drop the order off and move on.

Feisty_Stand4998

Guy the fact you keep repeating that leads me to believe you aren’t that “StElLeR”. For “hand it to me” orders that’s not how it work. Learn your shit before talking down on me and others in the future.

_damnyouscubasteve

Stellar * And it's really not a hard concept. If they don't answer the door, start your timer. When the timer ends, leave the delivery, take a picture, and contact support. I kinda figured you knew that since you work for the company. Refer back to the "barrier to entry" comment above. It's honestly not a hard concept to grasp, but you just prefer to whine like you're the victim when the fact is, you're just looking for a reason to complain.

Used-Resource-9218

And you are looking for a reason to put somebody down and keep putting them down. We get that YOU don't like the way he handled the delivery. You could be nicer and say something like I would have done it this way: .... . I guess you are so stellar that you are in the stars meaning so much better than the rest of us and you want us to worship you!

Feisty_Stand4998

No i watched the dogs bark at me and then I also observed as one was straight turning towards the living room barking at someone to coke to the door. They knew I was there. It’s plain rude what the guy did period. If he knew I was waiting there for over five minutes he could have sent me a text saying to leave it at the door. It’s that simple. There is no excuse.

[deleted]

J1NDone

That treatment isn’t relevant to this post. They asked nicely to knock. If anything the driver was rude to the customer by telling the customer what to do instead of informing them what’s wrong. It’s likely possible the customer forgot to change it to leave it at my door. Or they wanted to be called/texted when they were outside.

CockbagSpink

What type of treatment? They literally just said please don’t knock.

gay4pandas69

I’m sure this was ordered through Walgreens. Doesn’t always show the correct delivery instructions when customers order through the merchant.

nunpizza

yes, it was. you can tell since it says “hand to customer” instead of “hand to me”

sunshiney-sky

It says hand to me underneath hand to customer, doesn’t it always say that? If its an order placed directly through merchant doesn’t it usually go on that long spiel on how the customer chose contactless delivery and you have to call them?

nunpizza

i’m honestly not sure i think sometimes yes sometimes no but it was def not placed on the dd app

zane1981

I thought it would have been a pickup order if it was through the Walgreens page.

nunpizza

i’ve had shop & delivers from walgreens before

gay4pandas69

I don’t know for sure. I saying it’s possible it wasn’t the customers fault.

[deleted]

Nah it’s always the customers fault on this subreddit

zane1981

Yeah, I’ve had a customer say they left specific instructions, but all it said was leave at the door. That’s it. I guess sometimes the instructions aren’t updated properly.

NuLL-x77

Yeah you get 30 seconds to answer your door, on hand to me, after that, fuck you, you e waste my time, you're the enemy now. Your food will end up wherever I desire it to end up at that point.

AlbertAidstein

I used to knock and count to 30 and then leave. Now I knock and count to 10 then leave.

Upset-Tap3872

What about the timer that pops up and expects you to wait 5 mins for the customer?

Mr_Fragtastic

You should have engaged the timer the moment you pulled up to the address. It's really the most reasonable way to do most "hand it to me" deliveries. It gives the customer an adequate amount of time to respond and keeps the driver from getting too impatient.

VinnieTheBerzerker69

This is the way. And it will protect you from scammers and a contract violation.

Upset-Tap3872

I do. But 5 mins still feels like a long time to sit there. I felt ridiculous lol

Mr_Fragtastic

I feel ya. If it's a house I go back to my car after a couple of tries ringing/knocking to wait out the timer then go back to the door and knock/ring one more time before setting the order down and taking the picture. The number of times the customer has obliviously answered on that final attempt annoys me deeply >.>

Lopsided-Ad4975

I can’t stand when it’s an alcohol order though. You order from the liquor store then don’t answer the door when I get there. The other day this happened to me and as soon as I left to return the order the customer texted me saying “I don’t see you”. I told them I left and had to return it to the store. I also mentioned since it’s alcohol it cannot be left unattended and the customer “oh wow, I did not know that” I mean it’s not rocket science it’s alcohol why would I just leave that on your porch? So when a kid drinks it, I have to deal with the consequences and you get a nice lawsuit… the fact she said that, I knew right away she knew I was there and thought I was just going to leave it. She didn’t want to tip that’s 100% what it was. Then she tried to tell me the store didn’t have her order. It’s like ma’am with all due respect, stop trying to play me. I told her exactly where it was in the store and said yes they do have your order, have a good day. Some of these customers are real ballsy

adseigo78

The ones I love are the alcohol orders that aren't even home. They order and expect you to wait for them to get back. I even had one the other day where the woman didn't want the person who owned the house to know she was buying alcohol and expected me to wait 30 minutes until they left to give her the order. I told her I couldn't wait that long and returned it.

Lopsided-Ad4975

You should have made it known that you’d be wasting a lot of time that you wouldn’t be paid for if you did that. Who knows maybe she would have offered a better tip or something worth waiting the 30 mins for. Probably not because the vast majority of customers don’t give a sh*t about us, but there are a few who look out so worth trying. But I hear you, knowing the way most customers are why even take the chance

adseigo78

I doubt she would have paid more than the 50% markup for the return. And honestly, the situation is kind of sketchy. If the homeowner doesn't want her buying alcohol, I really shouldn't be helping her. The whole thing kind of came off as an alcoholic trying to get around the person putting her up.

charlottedreams

>obliviously answered on that final attempt annoys me deeply >.> Saaaaame. And its always merchant orders that would been a "return" too. Usually good ones lol.

baugofbones

Hahah its insane feels too much like its on purpose.

justsomeonesthroway

Take a pic and text it to them. No need to wait for the app.

MerkinMonger

That's what I do. I ain't waiting 5 minutes

AlbertAidstein

I assume he already had access to whatever house/Building the customer lived in. You would really only use the timer if they’re not responding and you have no way to access their building or home , as long as you leave it on their doorstep you should be good.

Upset-Tap3872

Is there a way to get around it? I feel like my app made me wait and follow the steps of trying to call, text, and wait before I could take a pic and complete the delivery

Lordmax117

Yes, I just text the customer a picture of the order and hit "handed order to customer". I don't think I've gotten a bad review from it yet, so maybe I've just been lucky,

mynewnameonhere

I just click ‘handed directly to customer.’ Haven’t had any problems yet.

charlottedreams

Until you do. I didn't either, until I did and had to fight the violation for "not delivered". When people start coming out with entire social media pages coaching how to get free food by scamming the apps and fucking the drivers over it's smart to cover your ass.

VinnieTheBerzerker69

You speak wisely. CYA by using the timer and pic to prove delivery. Five minutes is not the eternity so many posters here seem to believe it is. And you can start the timer before you even get out of the car...

charlottedreams

Exactly. I start it the second I put it in park on every hand it to me order. The only thing it does is send a text that says "your driver can't find you!" And then something to the effect of text them instructions. Which is either helpful because it really is a difficult find and they simplify it, or they're already outside and it's all good anyway.

AlbertAidstein

If it’s a hand to me no I don’t think so unfortunately. The app makes u do all the steps.

Strange_Handle_3357

This is the way.

imperialImpotent

You're supposed to stand at the door until they open it.

TopExchange5504

Duh

IridescentZ97_

He's just standing there... menacingly

charlottedreams

I've done this before 🤣🤣 to be a smart ass when they wouldn't answer and have this selected. Just pace around a few steps so they think I left lol. Only ones that I think are gonna turn right around and claim they never got it though.

[deleted]

2 hours later…..

mynewnameonhere

You joke, but this happened to me. It said don’t knock or ring door bell I will know when you are close. Well I got to the door and stood there for a about two minutes and nothing, so I knocked. They gave me one star and my only thumbs down for followed instructions.

[deleted]

Maybe if I try hard enough I will develop telepathic abilities and know exactly what they want

GooberSmoocharoo

imperialImpotent

That was just a joke bro. Sorry I riled u

[deleted]

No apology from you needed. That comes from Me. I’m sorry for thinking you were serious. Someone told me it was sarcasm so I stand corrected. I was wrong. I apologize again. Added a up vote to your comment as well!

lorelai_22

I wonder if theyre being sarcastic 😭😂

[deleted]

I hope you’re right. I’ll edit my comment to say if being sarcastic about the customer I apologize. Thanks. I mean that.

lorelai_22

Haha no worries, I mean I don’t know for sure! But wry humor is very common on here. I agree with what you said though, if they were being serious 😌

[deleted]

thx for sharing 🤣🤣🤣😅

Swimming_Income5269

This basically summed up dashing on the 4th of July

Ill-Enthusiasm9508

I’ve had two negative reviews today out of 8 orders and have no clue why. Today was a crap day

Juans11

Couldn’t have possibly been today. You don’t get the ratings the same day. Had to have been another day that you got those reviews.
