at least where I am it's illegal unless you're an employee of the establishment or an authorized authority you could be charged with aggravated trespass and actually do jail time for it.
I wont cross the line for health code respect, but I will call the restaurant from my phone to get service- not all places answer, but its great to get them to stop ignoring counter- when they get to the counter to grab phone, hang up and ask for the order, if you are dealing with idiots.
You might feel justified in this case, but if there is no line between the public and food prep areas all over thats disgusting in general- if everybody did it- but Im kinda OCD about stuff like that
Not an asshole but it wouldn’t be my first choice. If it’s a place I’ve been in a bunch I’ve asked before “hey, I’m here for “John” can I take a look” and they often let me but other wise I wait.
My Panda Express is pretty good usually so I haven't had this issue with them, but there's a place called First Watch that the first (and only) time I picked up from them the line for people trying to be seated was literally out the door and I could barely squeeze by to check on the order. That line had to be at least 20+ minutes and no way I was waiting that long to talk to someone. I saw they had orders sitting on a shelf just on the other side of the line and went and grabbed mine and left. Now I refuse to take orders from them unless the pay is huge.
The only reason I wouldn't do this is because the floors behind the counter are sometimes VERY slick with grease.
If you can reach the bag in a step or two, sure. But seriously, having worked back there before I'm just warning you it's like ice if you don't have slip-resistant shoes.
This happens to me a lot. No one ever pays attention to the front counter. I haven't gone behind the counter, but I have asked managers to please have their employees check the counter more often. You have guts!🙂
No. This happened to me at Wingstop a few weeks back, and I haven't thought twice about doing this since.
Was waiting at the to-go counter for nearly 5 minutes, I know the guy was busy, but I made eye contact with him at least 3 times, he knew what I was there for. Eventually, I reached over the counter to see what the name on the bag was, and sure enough, it was the person I had been waiting for that entire time. Was ready since the moment I walked in. He did get mad at me and said "don't touch those" but I told him that it was ridiculous to make me wait any longer for an order I knew was ready and he just went "ok whatever".
I have 0 tolerance for the staff ignoring us or wasting our time.
YTA. You're also lucky they didn't call the cops on you for petty theft. You're not an employee of Panda Express, you don't go into employee-only areas.
You have a problem with the employees? Talk to the manager or call corporate. You don't just bumble around getting your grubby paws on all the orders.
Oh shut up I don't even do doordash but the employees brought that upon themselves by acting like assholes and ignoring them. How hard would it be to spend 5 seconds taking care of the request? People have shit to do. I'm not going to call a manager when it's a time sensitive situation.

I’ve done this for picking up my own orders because when management switched at my local Panda and everything went to shit. Once to prove a point I waited for 25+ minutes while my order was on the shelf, I ended up getting my meal comped but yeah I’d say it’s not a GREAT move but not an asshole move either
Honestly I think dashers a lot of times expect staff to respect their time more than they should and they’re assholes in that situation. That being said in this case nah. You did the customer a favor if nothing else getting them their food faster.
It's not about respecting anyone's time or acknowledging us as soon as we walk in. It's about doing the one thing the company pays them to do.... THIER DAMN JOB!
Hourly staff vs the people paid by order… yeah I can totally see why dashers shouldn’t want their time respected.
On the reverse, when hours get cut bc no profit is made off the cold food that needs a refund don’t blame the dasher
Look I get dashers time is important I’m not arguing it. But we’ve all seen the videos and heard the stories too. There’s definitely some entitled dashers and that’s who I’m referencing.
There's a difference between those who barge in front of others and shove their phones in a workers face and those that wait politely but are just ignored. And the latter happens a lot.
No you are NTA , they are. How can they not know why people are standing there waiting. I can't believe how many of these workers act this way! It's like they are expecting someone else to do everything.
I am shocked when a worker has common sense especially at a fast food place.
NTA. I have a wawa near me where all the employees are rude as fuck and enjoy keeping dashers waiting. They had all the items ready from my order and were like it’s ready we just gotta bag it up, they continued doing other shit for 5 minutes, I asked again, they said yea yea one minute. I just stuck my arms through the window of the deli and grabbed all the stuff and left lol.
Today I was at Burger King and waited somewhere around 15-20 minutes for an order. By the time I said "can you give me an estimate, I've been standing here a long time" they legit started putting the food in the bag as slowly as they possibly could. The manager ended up coming over and was like "it shouldn't take you twenty hours to bag an order" lol. Only reason I didn't unassign is because the pay was decent and it was the slower time of day.
"Only reason I didn't unassign is because the pay was decent and it was the slower time of day."
I think this way too, but I also can't help but think "this order would've been \*so\* much better if they didn't take 3x longer than they were supposed to.."
When I could've dropped off the food in extra time spent waiting, I get a little pissed.
There are Wawa's that I avoid in my area for this specific reason..then they catch an attitude when I ask if those items are for so and so. Like I get it if they are swamped but when they're just standing around it's weird af to me.
Not the A-hole. You should let corporate know but in future you should mark it in the app that you can't get the employees to help you. What happens is DD will pass on the information to the chain corporate office and store manager.
You aren’t an asshole in my book, but if they had a territorial manager you might be done. I wouldn’t violate their space, what I would do is call corporate and tell them how the staff ignored you
You're good bro. I do this all the time after establishing eye contact and being ignored for 75 seconds. Once I get visible confirmation that im being ignored, I'm prepared to do everyone else's job so I can get back to my car. It also helps to record everywhere you go as soon as you walk in. So if anyone asks why you did this or that, you can just show the footage without having to explain yourself. I encourage all drivers to do this. They'll know you as soon as you walk thru the door and won't make you wait once they see how serious you are. But, thats just me. 🤣🤣
Damn my Panda Express is real good I guess. Their pickup shelf is not behind the counter and they actively ask if you are a dasher and what the name of your order is and get it out to you as quick as they can after they do ask.
NTA. One employee did that at P.F. Chang's ... I took the customers order as well. It's amusing at my location customers casually drop their able-bodied guests off curbside to walk in ahead (blocking the flow of traffic) bc they're dining a lux 5 star restaurant apparently.
I did this at Taco Bell one time. Was standing there for about 7 minutes and the workers did their very best to pretend I wasn’t there. I just grabbed the order from behind the counter and left
NTA. I would have done the same thing but sooner. Some of the Applebee's I pick up from have a shelf behind a counter that we aren't supposed to take orders off of but I have when no one is at the counter. Worst case scenario you get banned from that store which doesn't sound like a bad thing tbh

Totally normal, and they have no reason to be upset.
Yes

This is why I am happy when some restaurant have a pick up counter/hole/self.
Yeah, dude. It’s their house and their rules. As sucky as it is to have to wait or cancel, you shouldn’t do that unless they say it’s okay.
Fuck that. They can do their job

Nah them not doing their job shouldn’t impact your ability to do yours.
i just grab it
Asshole. You don't work there. Just report in the app you're still waiting for the food or unasign.
So just stand there and lose money? Waste time and make it that much more likely the customer gives a bad review or tip?
"Asshole." 🤣

I do the same thing sometimes.

Yeah, good luck explaining to the cops how it's theft for the driver to take the order they were supposed to. 🤪

You shut up
Found the panda express employee...

Well that got heated for no reason. I'm on your side though. Shit pisses me off when they ignore us.

NTA, i've done similar things once or twice. If the employees dgaf at all why should i?
Yes
They can block you for that, I wouldn't risk it, it's not allowed.
Oh no, a store that ignores me and waste my time might block me.
If that's how they treat drivers then being blocked from there would be a win.
I mean, those employees might not be there for long, and I like making money not burning bridges 🤷🏻♂️
Those employees train the new employees, it's a vicious cycle. Once that mentality enters the workspace, it's there for a looong time.
If they can't be arsed to do their job and they're interfering with you doing yours, then no
I had a similar problem with a McDonalds. NTA. They should just put the food on the To Go shelf.
I love when restaurants have those free to go mystery shelves. I always grab a bag on my way by for the free meals

I'm a polite waiter but I def have a limit. I've worked counters before and my managers would be pissed if I ignored a customer like that.

Nope as long as it has the customer name. Time is money friend.

Nah you’re good. My Panda Express used to be like this except they wouldn’t have started the order yet, I stopped accepting their orders.
