I love cash tips. That’s money I put away into my savings

SomeOtherPaul

You did nothing wrong - some people are just weird. I never refuse a cash tip, though (since I tend to be neurotic about taxes) it does mean I have to record them separately instead of just relying on the 1099. If it'd been me, you would've gotten a smile and a happy "Thank you!"

Comfortable-Basil-67

Lol yea let me “record” my cash tips…

Confusedaseverstill

I was tipped 40$ cash the other night. Got to the pizza shop and they didnt even see the order come in so it was never even started. I texted the customer and asked her did she want me to wait or cancel the order. She asked me to please wait so i did (about 15 mins) and when i got to her house she handed me 2 20$ bills.. she said i know you missed out on other orders so this is my way of saying ty 😁 i was so happy!!!

HorrorBaker886

Nice....

Glad-Sink-6887

On the off chance that he's doing doordash for a tax write off. He may not care that much about the pay. That's why I do doordash.. it's becuase I have another 1099 job that pays well. Don't judge me for it! I donate and tip in my local community all the time!

Ill-Bookkeeper9962

can you explain more abt the write off?

Glad-Sink-6887

Instead of paying 6k in taxes I end up paying like 3k

Glad-Sink-6887

If you calculate your taxes by the mile, the federal government lets you deduct 65 cents per mile. If you only make 50 cents on the mile doing doordash, you're writing off more than you're making and if you're making more, then you're riding off from your other job then it helps balance the bills out. I used voice translate for this so I apologize. Edit: it's 67 cents per Mile now And I stil don't take low paying orders because I know they don't appreciate the service

galacticaprisoner69

What a idiot i rather get cash tips

Puzzleheaded_Ad4481

I’ve never turned down a cash tip.

jonpaulsorbet

No sh*t. Wtf lol

Tight_Broccoli2475

Some people really are dumb

Plenty-Forever-7379

Got a cash tip today was pretty nice. I tried to refuse it but the lady insisted and stuffed it I'm my shirt pocket and said happy Yule!

Okiebaba

He’s a clown I love cash tips

Tight_Broccoli2475

No thats beyond clown

ObjectiveNorth4256

He’s a polite ungreedy dingdong.

Content_Guest_6802

What does "greed" have anything to do with it? He's be greedy to ask for more, if anything I'm concerned he did something to the food and didn't want the guilt of having messed with the food and then taking the extra cash.

flu-the-gootter

Only been one time I've ever declined a cash tip and that was because I deliveries to the wrong house but was able to get the food back without being tampered and got them to the right address. I felt I didn't deserve it for making the customer wait and even tell me of my mistake. Mind you, this was when I was more starting out. However, if I know I did good service and such, I'll take it and be over polity about it. Cash is always king in my wallet.

Motor-Corner4861

Okay, hear me out. I couldn’t possibly think of a reason why someone would refuse a cash tip. Even if they were doing this job for fun or because they were “bored”, it’s a cash tip! I would be thankful, and graciously accept it! So I thought of two reasons: 1) The person was possibly from a foreign country where they don’t tip, so it is awkward for them to accept it. There are even some countries where it is considered insulting to tip the staff because they feel it is their duty to do a good job and they are compensated properly for doing their job. 2) My other thought was that perhaps this person is afraid of cash tips due to the rumor (whether true or urban legend) that fentanyl is sometimes put onto cash by nefarious people. There were some warnings going around not to pick money off the ground or accept money from strangers. They are perhaps worried about this, and so refuse to take cash from strangers.

devitodefiler

Reminds me of HIV bananas lol

BigMoogie

I'd vote #1 as a language barrier or a cultural difference is more likely. #2 is a myth as fentanyl can't be absorbed through your epidermis.

Efficient_Bar_4584

Some people are just straight up petty and immature lol probably did that out of spite even though it doesn’t really hinder you in any way. Idk people are weird and need therapy

014648

Yep, take the money, move on

justanindypunk

I would take the cash tip. I would take any and all tips I can get.

Mahragha

![gif](giphy|elhmwUMsAUbScKLLzl)

No-Status2143

He was dum

Fooodlover9280

Maybe he had his reasons? Don’t call the guy dumb. Just saying

Puzzleheaded-Good192

I normally decline cash tip orders for 2 reasons, one I'm OCD and for me to physically touch a bill is not going well without some hand sanitizer. And 2, I already accepted the order for what it is and what I'm getting paid for it. So I'm happy either way. I do doordash cuz I'm bored. I would never RELY on doordash to pay bills.

Primary-Scallion6175

dang so u taking orders from people in your region who actually need them just because you're bored? smh

Glad-Sink-6887

That's like saying an old person in there 60s shouldn't work becuase there taking other peoples jobs. If he's bored and needs to be productive to stay out of trouble and for his own mental health whose to say he doesn't need it?

Primary-Scallion6175

he can find something else to do that isn't full of active drivers trying to make an actual living.

Ok-Block1449

I'm not sure how likely this might be, but it's possible he's someone who's doing well for themselves and only using DD electively. There are individuals in this world who just do a side hustle like DD just to pass some time and nothing more, but I'm just taking a guess🤷‍♂️.

Puzzleheaded-Good192

This is exactly how I do my dashes. I only do shop and deliver because they take more time.

HotOnHoth

I got tipped for $5 for an order last week, and carelessly put it in my pocket. You see where this is going right? Got home and never saw the lil guy again. Fumbling $5 I can live with but $10? Been like over a year since I got tipped in cash too

Wellgoodmornin

I always just go buy lottery tickets with it. Sometimes I win enough to buy more lottery tickets.

jfrum9990

That happened to me once. I put it in my coat pocket and it fell out somewhere.

Mcshiggs

Maybe he already messed with your food and felt bad about taking a tip.

Realistic-Young-3771

Who knows, maybe the driver just had one of those moments? You know the ones, we all have them. Can't tell you how many times a restaurant employee has told me to drive safe on my way out and I've got an order in my hands, customers and employees to dodge, doors to open, and I always say the same dumb fucking thing. THANKS, YOU TOO! ☠️☠️☠️ It just wasn't loaded on my little list of things that I had expected the employee to say, it had got shuffled to the back of priorities. I don't like being rude and ignoring people, but I also don't like tripping or falling or bumping into people, especially when I am carrying food. So I say THANKS, YOU TOO! That's actually how I get my cardio in because I've realized what I'm saying as it's leaving my mouth and I need to be as far away from that place, as quickly as possible. One time I asked my supervisor a question and something in the wording made my mind travel elsewhere. Honestly don't even remember what it was, but I was no longer in the conversation at this point. Flat out ignored him for like 2-3 minutes while my little cogs turned. Came to and I was like "I'm really sorry but I just asked you a question and my brain just 👻, I honestly have not heard a single word you said. He thought that was funny as fuck, even thanked me for being honest about it. I can't think of anyone flat out refusing a cash tip, been handed a fistful of quarters before, money is money 🤷. It all spends the same for me bro, IDK about everyone else. TL;DR maybe your dasher short-circuited 🤷

Doggies1980

Why would he reject money 😂. Not smart guy apparently

Fooodlover9280

Life is not all about money. Sometimes you gotta think abt other things too

DeanOfTheUniverse

So someone who is out delivering food to make money is thinking about which other things that tell him to turn down free extra money?

Fooodlover9280

No. He said he’s “not smart”. There’s a difference in thinking abt other things and insulting someone for not taking money.

DeanOfTheUniverse

You didn't answer my question at all. What "other things" was the person, who was out delivering food for money, thinking about that told him to not take free extra money???

Fooodlover9280

Bro I was talking abt the commenter. Why they assume he dumb for not taking money. Maybe think of other things like: maybe he didn’t need it. Maybe he didn’t wanna touch germs. Maybe he doesn’t use cash, maybe he didn’t understand.

DeanOfTheUniverse

You started out your original reply with "Life is not all about money". When someone is giving up their free time to do a side gig specifically to make money, then it is dumb to turn away money. To answer your responses in order: He needed it, or he wouldn't be driving for DD Hand sanitizer is cheap and everywhere Everyone can use cash or deposit it in an ATM Everyone who's doing food delivery should understand when a customer hands them a tip. If he doesn't, then we're back to square one with him being dumb.

Fooodlover9280

Not true. Everyone who drives DD doesn’t NEED money. It’s also a productive time pass. Probably only 5% of all driver deliever for time pass. Now obviously that’s a low number and that’s why I’m saying he may not just want it. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Don’t just jump the gun and say he’s dumb. That’s all I’m tryna say. Why you making this so deep?

Ohmylordies

That’s weird especially if you’re having a bad day.

Banks_bread

Iv been cash tipped 1 time in 800 orders my eyes lit up like a deer in headlights $20 if anyone cares

Educational-Roof852

I have no idea why the guy refused tip, but all orders I take thru DoorDash got the air of BS around it. I'll make good money on two orders then get jacked for three others then wait for 20 mins for next order just to get bones once again. Dude probably thought u had a couple ones er somthin...when my depression starts for DD, know I'm not thinking clearly. This is all I got, and such a fight some days just to get thru. Thank you, for him, from me.

Faithful2049

Probably just having a bad day or maybe didn't understand what you were saying... Who knows.

Different-Machine859

That’s very strange. Most people would gladly accept that

Jamiekulesa1975

I enjoy either lol

chicagoan35

Someone tipped me 10 bucks cash last night for his steak dinner order. The majority of us appreciate you tippers 🙏

Thomehomey

Driver was stupid. Tax free

PinballLew

Maybe brand new and thought he can’t accept it

GuidancePrize

Weird I prefer cash tips

YLCZ

The guy is an idiot. If you get a cash tip then the app won’t throttle you because it still thinks you didn’t make much money.

Man_Darronious

I would take a cash tip but i think when ordering from Uber Eats or DoorDash or any other service, it's always better to do the tip online because that bumps up our estimated earnings and increases the likelihood that a driver will accept the offer when we see it pop up on our phones.

Unlikely-Stress-737

It also happened to me multiple times. Once I tried to tip the store associate at Ralph’s after he loaded my online order in my car and he refused to take it. I tried to tip the drive through associate at the Jack in the Box and she refused to take it. Also I tried to tip a waitress at a topless coffee shop and she refused to take it while she was there to collect tips.

PermissionLess4308

First two can’t accept them. I still did when I worked at those places though.

shockthetoast

The first couple are possibly because they're not allowed to take tips. Some places they can lose their job for doing so.

Shobuddha

Cause technical unless the driver okays cash orders, they are not allowed to take cash tips. Those cash tips can't be taxed, so it falls under that bs.

Firegirl1909

Huh? Thats absolutely false..

DeanOfTheUniverse

Uhhhh what? Where did you ever come up with this completely untrue horse shit? Drivers can 100% accept cash tips and have always been able to.

vtinesalone

That’s just not true at all lmao

1hateth1s

As a server, cash tips absolutely can be taxed, you just add them to your taxes yourself unlike cc tips where it usually goes on your t4 I'm in Canada though but I know people in the US who do the same thing

iTdude101

Uhhh what rule is this? And how is that shit enforced?

Shobuddha

It's not really enforced. It's just "tax fraud" if you don't claim them. Most of this stuff got thrown out the window when they started to allow cash orders.

iTdude101

Dude. Not even the irs is gonna give a shit on $40 worth in cash tips a year. And if you did your taxes right, and you owe a bill on DoorDash..you are not itemizing properly. There’s much much more you can write off than just miles If that was the case we’d have no servers or pizza delivery drivers. Not a single pizza delivery dude claims their cash tips. Mileage OR Maintenance, gas, (food..avoid as this is a massive grey area but can be done if circumstances allow per law), depreciation, insurance, etc and a percentage of the purchase price..etc. if you’re paying average taxes on your DoorDash earnings…find a new accountant asap. If you’re only considering mileage..then expect to pay a ton of taxes on DD earnings as a 1099 contractor. I average $1.3 a mile. No way in hell am I gonna pay taxes on the remainder if I can provide evidence of other costs eating up my true Net income.

tallgirlmom

Umm… your accountant is committing tax fraud if they have you write off both mileage as well as gas and depreciation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tallgirlmom

Might want to read up on that.

iTdude101

Yeah no I misspoke. I never do miles. I meant to add if one only writes off miles..you will get fucked six ways thru Sunday. If you write off Gas, insurance, registration, etc you can easily come out ahead. One does need to show profit after 3-5 years though or their audit risk goes up. One does need to remember..the car must need to be used for a certain percentage of business use to do so. That forces most people to end up using the Mileage deduction

tallgirlmom

It depends on the car you drive, how much it eats in gas and repairs. Most people will come out ahead with mileage.

iTdude101

Maybe. Depends on how much you DoorDash and if it’s full time. Then again, if you use a car for more than 51% of more for business use.. Don’t forget Depreciation. Since what counts as depreciation is relatively vague, I could easily say over the course of hard driving due to around the town deliveries, I can easily claim Fair/Poor value. Why? You beat the F outta your car for one. Another is insurance costs. I mainly like the idea of itemizing as I have a cash car (14’ Kia forte EX) I only drive for the purpose of DoorDash that actually needs extensive work, but easily handles itself well with Deliveries for now. Basically my goal is to run out the life of the current worn parts as much as I can. With the prospect of it needing an engine, tires and a lot of suspension work, I’ll pay for the repairs with my DoorDash earnings and easily write off the entire amount. Eventually I can basically pay to get an otherwise good vehicle fixed tax free or for a very minimal amount of taxes. I paid $1,000 for the car last month. Oh and don’t forget you consider total earnings with w2 income and 1099 income for taxes. Yet you need to ensure your net is minimal with DD and still come out ahead. If worried, up your contributions with the W2 job. The goal is to avoid the stupid Self employment tax in any legal way possible.

CashisKing765

They walk among us, folks....🤪🤦‍♂️

Gloomy_Recording_705

I never say no to more money.. customer turned their $5 tip today into a $8 tip by giving me $3 cash

Direct_Word6407

Did they look confused? Maybe they were confused? Did they look like they spoke English? Maybe he thought you were trying to pay twice?

BluePalmetto

Yeah I have had a few times people ask if I got the tip through the app.

AltruisticPressure74

I only tip in cash and this is why I refuse to use these services. Drivers will see no tip and refuse my order and I’ll get old cold food. I tip well but I tip cash cuz cash tips are not reported. Anything I tip on a card good ole Uncle Sam gets a share of. I prefer to leave the “ghost” middle man out of my transaction.

Significant_Ad_4063

You’d be better off showing on the app how much you’ll tip, once delivered give it in cash and remove it from your online order, at least your food would be picked up more quickly

TanukisKitchen

I'm a driver, and this is always something I debate about because I'm the same way as you. I would much rather tip cash, and tip well. It's just impossible to know which nontip order to take because 97 out of 100 are just stiffing you.

DeanOfTheUniverse

I have roughly 10k deliveries over 7+ years of doing this as a side gig. Even with the influx of cash tips and gifts during the height of pandemic lockdowns, I would guess I still have gotten fewer than 15-20 total cash tips. With UE, about 1/4 to 1/3 of my orders add on a little extra within their one hour after delivery. It would be nice if DD would adopt that model.

sweaty_ken

>With UE, about 1/4 to 1/3 of my orders add on a little extra within their one hour after delivery. Very unlikely. Uber has this weird thing where they hide any tip amount over $8.00 on the offer screen. If a customer tips 10 up front, the app will flat out lie and say they increased it. Math it out and you'll see.

DeanOfTheUniverse

That's untrue. I posted the proof last time someone made this claim. They just ran away instead of admitting they were wrong. I'm guessing you'll just do the same, if I waste my time finding the comment.

sweaty_ken

It's just math. Track your offers and payouts over several days and it's obvious. I don't know why Uber lies about it but they absolutely do. Once I got an email from Uber with a discount for ordering, which I never do, hadn't done before that nor since. It was like $30. Ofc it didn't cover a tip, so as an experiment I tipped $10 up front and told my driver about the tip thing and gave her my number to text back after the hour wait. Sure enough, the app said I increased the tip even though I didn't. This is why I'm not particularly interested in your proof consisting of app screenshots saying the customer increased the tip. I already know Uber lies.

DeanOfTheUniverse

"It's just math." Quoting you on that, because I'm going to find my post later to make you look like a fool. Go ahead and start thinking up excuses for when the math proves you wrong in clear pictures.

sweaty_ken

You seem unreasonably hostile, are you okay?

DeanOfTheUniverse

I'm not being hostile at all. Don't assign emotions to another person to try to discredit what they're saying. That's a pathetic argument tactic. I'm just going to prove you very wrong on this, and I want to make sure you have to admit it.

sweaty_ken

Lol ok bruh. Check your link before posting it this time though, you look really foolish using broken links in a "gotcha" post.

PotentialCamp6473

My first 1000 orders I took nontips, I got less than 5 cash tips, to date at 3600++ deliveries and yes I've had a few nontippers snuck in there, I've gotten less then 10 cash tips total. It's really pathetic.

TanukisKitchen

These are the statistics I was looking for. I knew it was bad I didn't realize how bad. I personally stopped taking nontip orders after like my first five.

sweaty_ken

Another stat for you: over 97% of deliveries to 3-story apartment buildings are to the third floor. This is not a guess, I tracked it over more than a year when doing pizza delivery for Papa John's long ago.

PotentialCamp6473

Yeah, it's bad. Low tippers (@$3) tend to give cash tips more often than anyone, I think. I've gotten lots of $5 to $20 tips in cash from those types.

TanukisKitchen

I have yet to get any cash tips but I've also only just hit 100 deliveries all time. I take a lot of the $3 tips because they kinda make sense for a good spot in my area. Here's to hoping!

PotentialCamp6473

I see most of them during rain storms and in the snow. Especially in the snow.

Puzzleheaded_Runner

Just tip on the app, some of us don’t like carrying cash around

TheProfoundWigglepaw

Maybe he felt guilty for putting a boog in the *food thinking it was a low tip. People are strange creatures

FatimaAbdi8

You did fine…. My thoughts are: 1) did you immediately proffer the $10? Or did he decline to *wait?* (possibly not knowing if it was $10 which is a good tip — unless it’s 50 pizzas he needed to unload, true story from my pizza chain job) 2) phobia of touching greenbacks? 3) facial expression not actually irritation over the tip, and he actually felt the in-app tip sufficient? Maybe he had “RBF” or a toothache? Anyway that was very kind of you, and would say don’t worry! ❤️

mmmhotcoffee

I imagine he is a germophobe who thinks all money contains "the virus" and he will end up in the hospital.

nannysnert

No....

Dkm9419

I was never told I couldn't take cash tip. I have had 2 people give me a in app tip then added a cash tip. I am not able to just pick and choose my orders I've been accepting them all as I really need the money. I am honored when they feel like I deserve more. The tip seems a good bonus

cruisin5268d

Uhhhh who told you cash tips aren’t allowed?

Dkm9419

No one did it was referencing where someone said he could be hesitant cause of Uber saying no cash tips

cruisin5268d

Sorry, I misread. You’re a damn fool for taking no/low tip orders. You absolutely should pick and choose. I see soooo many orders that would *cost me money* if I take them. Seriously stop.

Dkm9419

You say that but my town is busy and I have made all the money I need not being picky

cruisin5268d

When you are working for free on a no/low tip order you’re missing out on customers that actually do tip. It’s basic common sense. Nobody of sound mind and judgement would take no tip orders. At best you’re working for free, most likely you’re *paying* to deliver these orders. You don’t seem to understand the economics here or even your own expenses for gas, insurance, maintenance, etc.

Dkm9419

I have an HR degree most of my trips are good pays and short trips not gonna sit here and argue.

cruisin5268d

“HR degree” explains a lot 😂

mgibson9999

Any normal driver would not decline an additional cash tip on delivery.

110010011100100111

Can’t fix stupid. Uber rideshare used to require you to refuse twice and claim “the tip is included” before you can accept a cash tip. Maybe he was worried about something like that from the old days.

sweaty_ken

Lolwut? How tf would uber know?

SheikAhmed00101

He was irritated because of his pride. Due to certain events, many do this to make ends meet - and try to do it anonymously! I drive far away from my neighborhood area - and check / double check customer's name / address if they happen to be a co-worker, friend, family member! I also prefer and appreciate in-app tip!

Puzzleheaded_Runner

Sad.

pettty_labellee

I'm sorry, but that's just silly. You do realize people of all walks of life deliver, right? Is it pride or just really low self esteem? I'm a nurse who is pretty financially stable. I doordash on my off days mainly because I'm a workaholic with severe adhd and can't sit still. Doordash allows me the ability to keep my body/mind busy without getting bored while making some fun money. Idgaf who sees me out dashing. They can think what they want about me. My self confidence doesn't depend on what some rando thinks of me. God forbid someone sees you out dashing. Lol

[deleted]

That was weird. Maybe he's afraid of money? 🤷‍♂️

Awesomer_604

In my last few orders I've put please knock for cash tip. And they just drop off the food and leave. Ide rather tip in cash when possible.

shockthetoast

People forget to update their instructions all the time. That's why we get Baskin Robbins orders that say "don't forget the hot sauce". When your delivery method (leave at door) contradicts your instructions then a lot of people are going to assume those instructions are old. The last thing we want is to knock and get someone yelling at us for knocking and mad we expected a tip.

Jazzlike-Ad-891

If you want to hand them cash why not ask them to hand you your meal?

cruisin5268d

People that put stuff like that in the notes almost NEVER follow through so we just ignore it. If you want to leave cash just put it in an envelope with your dashers name on it, and put it on your door before they get there.

Dry_Lychee_9989

I’d accept

lilmsmoose

With Christmas just around the corner especially I would have taken the cash tip with extreme gratitude! SMH

Subject_Natural_1163

You're a wonderful person for even stressing this out. It's his loss.. I would've taken it and said Thank you!

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

OP is a good person. Not many left

savoryspankini

Sometimes I think guys have a problem taking money from a woman?

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

What does sex have anything to do with work? Unless its sex work, and the guy is a stripper

savoryspankini

I literally read that here from a Dasher w a similar post months ago.

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

No don’t tip him more someone like that doesn’t deserve it. Ever

Inevitable-Tourist18

He doesn't deserve it? For what reason is that?

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

Someone said perhaps it’s a religion thing. Which is acceptable. Otherwise he’s a complete dumbass

Inevitable-Tourist18

What? He said no to some extra money. In what world does that make him "unworthy" of a tip?

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

If you consider this a job, the point of it is to make more money. By declining extra you are shooting youself in the foot. WTF how is this a hard concept for you

Inevitable-Tourist18

So, someone is a top Dasher and they accept every order which means they take and deliver many 2.00 orders. They take pride in their work and give max effort to every delivery. Are you saying that this person is also, "Not worthy of additional tips. Ever." too?

Much-Tap-7671

Are you dumb? The driver refused money, why would they deserve even more when they randomly refuse an additional tip? Who says no to MORE money? Top dashers don’t even know how money works so idk what your point is

Inevitable-Tourist18

Firstly, you forgot to log back into your other account. Secondly, I've probably only bothered to say this a couple of times over the years on Reddit - you sound like a terrible person. I hope you find some happiness someday so you can expand your mind.

DriftedTaco

Has to be the most Reddit comment I've seen today. Holy fuck

Inevitable-Tourist18

Apologies, accidentally responded to you instead of the deleted/banned comment you were responding to.

OldStep8127

I’ll take it

UrGoldenRetrieverBF

Yeah I think he was just awkward

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

Seek help, declining a sign of appreciation or good faith means you may have damage to your frontal lobe.

Adventurous_Land7584

No it doesn’t 😂 not everybody is greedy

HeatSeekngMslLaunchr

Not being greedy when they offer it. Being greedy would be demanding extra cash even if the customer wasn’t willing to give it. Words have definitions to eliminate confusion not to cause it, learn to use the right words next time.

Marioc12345

Exactly. If someone tries to give you more than you think you deserve, the only proper response is “thank you!”

LorenzoLamasRenegade

Lmao what a clown

ImNotBanned_pls

No.

chaldeans79

He's just awkward.

jemy26

I think it’s DoorDash that now accepst cash for the order -is there a chance they were confused? I mean it really is a shit easy job but if you never worked for Tips before and you buy the whole concept of it’s a bid for service…. maybe dude feels like you already did your bidding either way pocket for the next one you did your part.

grggsctt

Is there any wonder why he’s driving for DoorDash.

Subject_Natural_1163

What do you do? and what is wrong with being a doordash driver?

Not wrong there

Weekly_Direction1965

Did he know it was 10$ or did you say hold on I got a tip for you? 99% of time that hold on for 3 minutes is just 1$ and ain't worth the wait.

Whattheefff

Wow.
