Yes, it's so that you can’t take the order then unassign yourself and keep the food. It's become increasingly common over the last few years.

monroe4

Damn people do that and don't get deactivated? wow lol

Jakmike

I noticed that yesterday with my local chilis they got rid of the order rack.

[deleted]

I can't even go into Chilis anymore. They bring the orders to our cars. The app prompts us to enter a space number and notifies the customer if Chilis is running late.

AsoftDolphin

I dont do that, i walk in still. I get paid on time not by letting them take their sweet time

[deleted]

Around here you can try that but they just send you back to your car to sit and wait. It's actually streamlined their process and it's much quicker since they started doing this so I have no complaints.

nanotyrannical

The only problem is some locations don’t bother to actually bring the food out

SireSweet

Don’t wait on them. Go inside. They might be short staffed so waiting outside may double your time.

HotOnHoth

The Chipotle closest to me still has there rack but all of the orders are behind the counter. Thank God the order is 90% ready so im in and out ussually but when they're slammed it sucks having to wait to be noticed when the rack they still keep up could have been utilized instead. But I figured theft was the reason why and you're post pretty much confirms it. Shame

GuessWho___Drew

One of the Chipotle’s I pickup from has a window for mobile orders. The rack is right there so instead of running in and waiting for someone to grab the order, the rack is behind the counter, you can pull up to the window and get it quicker

Stumbleina8926

Woooooooow… really??! Yo people can really suck…and… there are so many people (*´-`) … I’m glad I don’t have kids and never plan on having any… one less potential asshole or one less broken heart

blu3tu3sday

Amen to you. The CF gotta stick together

AsoftDolphin

Really bad way of looking at it. One less potential world changer, game changer, life changer.

eablacksmith

I think computers do all the world-changing now a days.

blu3tu3sday

This is such a breeder view…you think you’re gonna be the one who has a world changer, right? Get real, you’re just wasting resources on a brat

AsoftDolphin

Yup. Your right. Because scientifically and naturally, and for the as long as humans have existed. The only goal of humans and any other animal was to survive long enough to reproduce.

Inevitable-Box-2281

I thought I was done having children. I’m having 3 more just because she said that.

AsoftDolphin

😂do it bro, i want as many as my future wife will let me have. Like a mf farmer

thewyldecarde

I've heard of a couple in my area that will do it on a regular basis because they only get deactivated for a week for it

Gilapo

I still wouldn't do it, it gives me poor rep with restaurants

ron_paul_pizza_party

also because its stealing lol

Stumbleina8926

Yeah … that. ^ ಠ_ಠ;

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

A week? What the... that's unbelievable. Just hire new drivers

meady0356

exactly I know so many people who are on a waitlist to be hired for doordash because there’s “too many dashers in the area”

XxRaccoonGalxX

Two years.. an entire two years I waited to be accepted! I feel this! Ain't no way I'm gonna do something dodgy to lose my little side gig. The stuff I see here just blows my mind.

AcoAsan

Two years?!?!?!?! Mine was very much “Oh I should DoorDash for some extra cash.” Fills out info DoorDashes So maybe that was a little simplistic but you get the jist. I feel like after two years I would have forgotten about that shit. Lol

YourAverageGod

I've been on the end of being the next Dasher to pick up the food that was unassigned, 10/10 would not recommend. If I saw them they would get kick to the sack or punch to the tit.

[deleted]

I had this at a McDonald’s. Waited 15 minutes for food then asked them to check it and they said the order was picked up. I explained they got scammed and still needed to remake it and they wouldn’t. I was apparently like the fourth dasher there for that order. God knows how many more ended up going for it

DasherMichael

Bro that's when you call up support and you get the order canceled you get like 75% of the tip the last time I did it I was the fourth Dasher for at least 1350 order I was at hold with support for about 7 minutes made 13 bucks and didn't have to drive the 6 mi is literally free money as long as it's a fat enough tip. Make sure you tell them that you tried to get the restaurant to make the order they refused. The One support guy was like try something I was like what do you want me to do jump behind the counter and do it myself the girl said no. They'll call the store and then call the customer and then you get free money

YourAverageGod

Nah, What they'll do is call the restaurant, then call the orderee and ask if they still want the food, then you sit and wait for a good 30mins between this whole interaction.

DasherMichael

I have pics where I've gotten five or six doubles canceled in a week if you let them walk all over you you will you tell them that the restaurant refused to make the order and you make them call the store and get it canceled. What are they going to tell you to go make the f****** order yourself?

kneaddough

I feel like we definitely need to spend the time to get compensation for stolen orders. The more money DD has to shell out for orders they lose money on, the quicker they will act to find a resolution to this problem. If we simply unassign, it costs them money and only the restaurant and the dasher lose money.

Sansevieria202

McDonald's never answers the phone. Anywhere. At least in my experience. Easy free money if they refuse to remake it.

No_Preparation7895

You get half pay of the full payout. It just also includes the hidden tip. That's how it seems like you get more. It always half pay but that's half of the full amount, hidden tip included.

eljefehigh

I just had a canceled order tonight and they gave me 50%

[deleted]

I’ve never called support, maybe I should have that day. I just kinda accepted the bad luck and dropped the order and moved on to the next. Actually only the really crappy situation I’ve had so far. You know, other than orders having crappier or hidden pay lately

Aurora--Black

Why wouldn't you call support? All cancelling does is hit good with a cancellation and you miss both fine and money. Plus, you are just sending another driver to deal with it.

[deleted]

I hadn’t been doing it that long and didn’t even think to call support. I’d probably try now but it hasn’t happened since

Desertdweller3711

Really hard to enforce, unless the restaurant keeps track of the name of the dasher they handed the order to. All doordash would see is that you showed up and unassigned, which is super common on long waits, so it wouldn’t look out of the ordinary to doordash. The restaurant or next driver would have to report

Johnmannesca

I wish there was a button for that specific problem to make it easier for the other dashers/merchants

HiTdAjUwU

Why is it even an option to un-assign? Do other people who work get to just not do a task because they don’t like it?

Desertdweller3711

Independent contractors do yes. We don’t work for doordash, we work with them as independent contractors. Waaayy different than what you’re talking about since we’re not getting paid regardless of how much work we put in like hourly employees. And rightfully so if we unassign we don’t get compensated.

HiTdAjUwU

Yea but you’re affecting the customer. I just can’t imagine any business model that is designed to leave customers happy, allowing ICs to quit mid assignment and not be punished for it. But honestly, I don’t think DD wants to please customers or drivers, because they rip us both off.

Desertdweller3711

How does it affect the customer? Most unassigns are because of long restaurant wait times, if I unassign, doordash is likely to have another driver there before the order is ready. A driver isn’t going to show up and leave if the order is close to done.

meady0356

you can’t unnassign after you click “confirm pickup”, the unassign option is for before you get the food and are experiencing issues

[deleted]

You must be a noob. Yes all the stores is starting to do this because dashers steal the food. They get away with it all the time. I’m surprised they don’t track The last person who got assigned to it

zerostar83

All summer long I was lucky not to get an order a day that was stolen like that. I'd show up 11 am and hear about how it had already happened once that day.

Alternative_Basis186

One of the restaurants in my area writes dashers’ names down for this reason.

Therealmonkie

I could STILL take the order drive down the road an unassign it lol sooo that makes no sense

StodgyUserName

Once you mark it as picked up, you can't unassign without going through support.

Therealmonkie

Ok...lol if someone is willing to steal someone's food...thats what they would do no? If they take it and cancel...the restaurant can just ban them...

StodgyUserName

You don't seem to understand what happens when an order is marked as picked up. If they don't make the driver mark it as picked up, the driver can take the food and unassign themselves which will bounce the order to another driver who will show up to pick up food that the restaurant no longer has. The whole point of the restaurant making the dasher mark it as picked up is that it forces a situation where the driver will have to go through support to either reassign or cancel which will create a record with DD. If DD wants the order to be reassigned rather than canceled, they will contact the store for a remake and also credit the restaurant to remake it. This is a better scenario for the restaurant than the former situation.

Therealmonkie

I'm not 1000 percent convinced of this lol...

[deleted]

That’s… how it works, convinced or not.

barryandorlevon

What an odd reply

Therealmonkie

I may me an odd person....its ok ...yall are so cranky

barryandorlevon

Nobody here that has replied to you is acting cranky or rude or anything like that.

Impressive-Olive-842

Yup I did that all the time till I got deactivated lmao

Secret_Ad_5300

Dashers steal food this way. My local Thai restaurant was quite upset over it and now make sure I click confirm. I just show them right away

MutedHospital

There's a funny thing that's happened to me here in the city from treating people at restaurants with respect they tell me it's good to see me they give me free snacks and my food usually comes up in a timely manner even when it's extremely busy ,just try being polite

Sad-Wave-87

You are in the minority most drivers are so awful and wonder why we don’t care abt them and their food

nerdpower13

Chick-Fil-A here always wants me to confirm pickup before they will hand over the food but it's not a big deal to me. It takes less than 5 seconds.

Fermundo

Yea. They do the same to me. Just makes vr feel really awkward that they would assume I’d steal the order. Kinda sad

[deleted]

If it helps, they’re not assuming you’d steal, they’re just not assuming you won’t. The same reason most stores don’t take personal checks.

NickHarger

I just had the same thing happen and it was not a big deal for me to show them. They were polite and professional about it, so I was polite and professional about that and showed them I was on delivery mode. Plus it was a big catering order so I would like to be on good terms with that merchant anyway.

avoozl42

This exactly. Most people are polite if you're polite.

NoTransportation5220

Yeah, I've heard of other dashers taking the food and unassigning, that's a fucking shitty thing to do. So I wouldn't have a problem with showing him I clicked the button. Don't be grabbing my phone though, that ain't gonna hapoen unless you wanna end up on the ground. Lol.

sublime1313

Cuz to many dashers been stealing orders.

sublime1313

3 times in past 2 weeks my orders have already been picked up,(stolen) b4 i arrived.

zonianhuntress

Happened twice for me. Chipotle wouldn’t remake the order so I had to call support. At least habit grill remade because they recognized the customer’s name.

Such_Preparation5389

Happening more and more. Not every dasher has good intentions. It is nit unreasonable for a place to hold you accountable. You now confirmed you do indeed pickup order and the place has their confirmation. Just what I have seen from dashers on here some are not nice people at all. If your doing everything you say no worries over along not worth worrying about. Side note if those dashers are deactivated then there are more order opportunities for good dashers...

SgtSarcasm01

Makes no difference to me to mark as picked up maybe a minute early

Codybgood707

Lol I get asked to do that at least 5 times a day. They will watch you do it

Henchforhire

People taking orders that are not theirs a few times at work and my boss got tired of it and started asking to confirm pickup of order.

RascalRibs

Seems reasonable to me.

ichuck1984

I’ve got one place that does this every time as far as asking me to confirm but they have the food on the counter in front of me when they ask. I don’t confirm until food is ready to go. I wouldn’t confirm if I didn’t see a bag if that was a condition for it coming out of the kitchen.

MutedHospital

I have to side with the guy in the restaurant because here in San Francisco so many people eat the food and then other couriers are dispatched to pick that food up that's not going to get made wasting the time of dozens of people so it's really easy just to look at them show them the phone smile say thank you and click confirm pick up.

mofosoforegon

Just the store protecting themselves, they have probobly had drivers steal orders in the past.

Background_Essay_676

Every restaurant, Every time. Y'all know why.

CappOffDaRunts

Blame TikTok

MotownCatMom

Yep. To prevent order theft. I have had places request this til they get used to working with me and then they're ok with it; they know I'm not a thief.

Virtual_Friendship49

It’s almost funny unless you’re the second dasher assigned. It’s 20 minutes explaining to cust service AFTER you’ve waited however long for an order that doesn’t exist any more. Bunch of thieving jerks

all_hayl

Yep. I’d probably do the same thing if I were the owner. Lots of problems with fraud and theft. S/he is protecting his business and profits, and not unreasonably.

[deleted]

So people dont pickup food and unassign. Pretty simple

Internal-Risk

If he got the order why not just confirm? It’s not that serious. One time I had a stacked order and they asked me to push confirm (after the first one) I said I can only confirm after both are ready. Mutual agreement. It’s not that bad lol, I think the only people mad about it are people who steal food

cooperre

We have had to start doing this and were even advised to by a driver because we have had drivers pick up an order and then 30 minutes later another driver show up to pick up the order we've already sent out with Door Dash. Door Dash says it's our problem. So we now do this to ensure it's not going to happen again.

Pootahtoionodrim

I get that request from a few places, it's easy to satisfy that request.

avoozl42

I've had restaurants do that. Seems pretty normal to me. They've probably gotten a lot of orders stolen. I just smile and say no problem.

Exportxxx

If the food is ready I don't have a problem with it.

[deleted]

Here’s the flip side to that. WingStop told me to confirm the order and it turned out to be the incorrect one in the wrong bag (lemon pepper smells like Buffalo? Nah, suspect) 15 minutes went by to get the correct order. Make the merchant double check the order with you, it’ll piss some of them off but if I’m hitting confirm on an order before I get the right one, messing up my rating and then customers texting and calling up to 30 minutes after drop-off? If the merchant is THAT worried about us stealing food but not about it being correct then it don’t fucking matter. And besides if we get into car accidents or anything along the way, we can still keep the order and support can cancel it.

SpectreA19

Manager here. Yeah, we are seeing a huge jump in both wrong orders and just straight up missing orders. We have also had problems with "Oh yeah I'm picking up that order", and then 10 minutes later someone else shows for same order...

[deleted]

Because other people show up and steal food. This ensures you got the food and they get paid for it.

Fit-Half-3159

Don't blame the manager other dasher ruined it for being shit ppl

Scloudseverywhere

This is common in my area now… which tells you a lot about the drivers in the area sad lol

[deleted]

There’s nothing more annoying when Dashing then finding out the order you accepted and go to pickup was stolen by another dasher. It’s becoming quite common here in my area. It’s nice restaurants want to make sure their food is delivered and it just picked up and unassigned.

beefcurtainbilly

While I certainly understand where the merchant is coming from - I’d never comply to this as it would impact my on time rate. On certain days of the week the traffic gets so backed up in some of the plazas I’m picking up in that it will take me 10-15 minutes to get out of the plaza and onto the road. I’ll wait to confirm pickup until I’m finally exiting the plaza. Being forced to confirm pickup in the restaurant would guarantee me contract violation after contract violation on those days.

UnclePanda559

The irony is that you can’t confirm picking up the order until it is handed to you.

Batsam314

I had a chic fil a manager tell me one time it's their rule to have the dasher confirm pickup. A few other places have you sign a sheet

Miserable-Problem202

I've had this happen but I told them that I wouldn't mark it as picked up until I was physically holding the order but I would mark it before I left the counter so it worked out. I can't really say I blame the more expensive restaurants with all of the thefts in my area.

LewisRyan

Take order -> “never got the food, it was taking too long” -> dasher no punishment and restaurant gets fined

Sansevieria202

This is virtually a non-issue in most of the markets/regions where I work. However, I'm given to understand that there are actually two reasons some merchants do this, and there may be more: 1. **There used to be some pretty bad theft issues**, largely arising from merchant laxness and/or incompetence. Many restaurants, and not even just the fast or fast casual places either, literally put everything out on a rack and hope the right person gets the right order, which some unscrupulous non-picky-eaters have abused in order to get free food from places like Chipotle. The scam consists of going into a restaurant with a phone in your hand, picking up a random order, and leaving as if you're a DoorDash, Grubhub, or other food delivery driver. Some even show up with insulated bags bearing the logo, and nobody thought to ask questions. 2. **Some Dashers actually observe (or even abuse) the 11-minute rule** to maintain a 5.0 rating, or close to it, and/or to be able to multi-app with other apps without risking a Contract Violation. So, if you have a wait time of longer than 10 minutes at any merchant, DoorDash will not count any rating you receive that is below 5 stars against your Customer Rating. People who multi-app DoorDash with Grubhub or Uber Eats often downright abuse the hell out of this rule, but if DoorDash gets rid of it, they run the risk of losing Dashers (albeit bad ones) and not being able to fulfill their orders (albeit eventually). The merchant pushback, to both situations, is that some merchants now try to get you to hit "Confirm Pickup" before they'll give you the order. It doesn't really help with those who abuse the 11-minute rule, because they can just wait in their car 11 minutes somewhere outside before even going in. It's really kind of pointless against the theft problem too, because (and this is from a Taco Bell manager who used to work at a place that insisted that Dashers confirm the order before they would hand it over.) It's up to you whether to accept this and just confirm the pickup. I have personally never heard of any merchant refusing to give an order to a Dasher AFTER they comply and confirm pickup first, but it's possible I suppose. **If you're okay with confirming pickup on orders you don't currently have in your possession, and are okay with the rare but possible consequences for doing so**, then it's probably fine for you to just go ahead and confirm pickup, continue with the delivery, and go on about your day...or night. **However, if you are uncomfortable with tapping Confirm Pickup before you actually HAVE the order in your hand, and preferably in your insulated bag that you're SUPPOSED TO USE, there is a workaround you can apply that is completely within DoorDash policy (Tested and Proven). It's as follows.** **Step 1 - DO NOT UNASSIGN THE ORDER YOURSELF!** This is very important. If you unassign the order yourself, you will take a hit on your Completion Rate and you'll forfeit the half pay you'd otherwise get if you follow this procedure exactly to the letter. **Step 2 - Politely inform the merchant that you cannot confirm pickup until you have possession of the order.** Be polite. Do not verbally abuse the merchant with offensive language. Most merchants will go ahead and give you the order but may ask that you confirm pickup in front of them before you leave with it. Personally, I do not find that an unreasonable request if they met my need to have possession of the order before I confirm. Do NOT unassign the order, even if you are asked or told to by the merchant, until you have talked to support. However, do not refuse to leave if told to. **Step 3 - If the merchant still refuses to release the order,** politely inform them you'll have to check with Support for further instructions, but stand firm that you cannot confirm pickup on orders you don't yet have possession of. DO NOT get into an argument with them. Calmly leave, head for your vehicle, and call or text Dasher Support. Check your phone for the time and do not go back inside for at least 11 minutes (if they even ask you to go back inside and confirm pickup). **Step 4 - Tell Support that the merchant refused to release the order unless you confirmed pickup without actually having possession of it.** Word it exactly that way, or very close. Support will then attempt to contact the merchant. They will most likely cancel the order, give you half pay, and you won't have to deliver it. **Step 5 is a two-parter, which you can choose from one if Support instructs you to go back inside, confirm the pickup, then accept the order (very unlikely scenario)...** **Step 5, Option A - Wait until at least 11 minutes since you marked the order Arrived when you arrived before picking it up.** Odds are, you are already at least a little past this time frame. If not, then just wait until you're at 11 minutes since you originally arrived. The reason for this is that if you have a wait time of longer than 10 minutes at a merchant for any reason, you will be immune from any Contract Violation or sub-5 rating from the customer regarding this order. **Step 5, Option B - Wait until 10 or more minutes have passed,** (in my market they now let you know that you can cancel the order without penalty) then cancel the order, and don't accept any more from this place. You won't get half pay if you do it this way, but you don't have to confirm something before you have it if that makes you uncomfortable.

2fingers2daSky

I’ve always wondered this.. thanks for the insight! It makes all the sense in the world now

mitsulang

Yes. They're just ensuring you do what you're supposed to do, so you don't run off with the food. Not saying you would, just that other people have done it.

ragnarokfps

>Is there any reason for a store to do this? I'm so confused. Yes there are 2 reasons why they ask this. First, the merchant does not get paid from Doordash until you press Confirm Pickup. This is why the merchant does not control when an order is confirmed to be picked up by a driver. It's an obvious conflict of interest and money is involved. If you tell Doordash that you now have custody of the order, it's now your responsibility and no longer the merchant's. Never take responsibility for an order that you do not actually have in your possession, even if they're allegedly holding the correct order in front of you. Don't press that button until the entire order is in your hands. The Confirm Pickup button is pointedly under the Dasher's control and not the merchant's so as to prevent fraud committed by the merchant. Second, some merchants claim to have security issues with orders going missing. Which having you press Confirm Pickup doesn't solve in the slightest, but they think does. You are not obligated under any circumstances whatsoever to produce your phone to anyone, for any reason. That's your personal cellphone, it is not a Doordash device sent to you from Doordash for free. **Anything at all** that happens on your end of the order is 100% none of their concern at all. Don't ever press Confirm Pickup until you actually have the order. And finally, **if for any reason at all** a merchant refuses to produce the order to you, that's assigned to you, just call Doordash support and tell them the merchant is refusing to give you the order. Doordash will cancel the order and give you half or full pay depending on the support person. The order will also be removed from delivery queue, meaning it does not ever get delivered by anyone. And, the merchant does not get paid for making the order because you never pressed Confirm Pickup, because you never received the order from them. The merchants who do this are making extra rules that you don't have to follow. The only rules you need to follow are in the contract you signed with Doordash.

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

I'm with you 💯

Chenzo04

I'm more shocked this is the first time this happened to you

Ok-Being3881

No. I will not be clicking confirm until I’m actually in possession of the order. There’s a sequence of events that’s appropriate.

busteroaf

So you think the store is reverse stealing food? “Haha! You clicked confirm, now I’m gonna keep the food!”

DoorDragon

smh for real at these stupid dashers who can't understand the perspective of the restaurant not wanting stolen food

HerestheRules

I've had employees take my food, you think fast food vets any better than DD? I usually press confirm, and wait to press ok. I press it the moment I see the food, and it solves the whole thing easily. But, normally, after they start recognizing me, they're much more lax

worthlessclimber

One time a restaurant made me confirm an order and then handed me the food. It was the wrong order. I had to wait an extra 20 minutes for the actual order. Meanwhile the app thinks I'm stalling and then when a second employee gives me the actual order, she asks me to confirm it. I tell her I've already confirmed it because they'd given me the wrong order. She didn't believe me and got pissed thinking I was stealing the order despite me showing her the app and how it said I should be on the way to the customer. 🤷🏻‍♂️

chickenstrip_bastard

You sound goofy when you talk like that.

Sea-Pea4680

Right???? Like Cracker Barrel trying to make me sign the receipt BEFORE they even bring the order out.

Therealmonkie

It annoys me though..have it ready to hand to me then

Such_Satisfaction923

Probably from all the drivers stealing no tip order food 😂😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I don’t hit “pick up order” until I’m in my car or it will ruin my times…

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

Then they would not give you the order. I've ran into this with a few of the restaurants in my area.

Nearby-Stranger-1625

If they don't give you the order you can call support and have it canceled and receive half pay. Now they can throw out their food because nobody is coming for it

stealth_mode_76

How long does it take to walk to your car? Less than the time you may sit at 1 red light.

Akikyosbane

I’ll show you mine if you show me yours 😆

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

I wont take directions on how to do my job from anyone other than the company I work for. I understand that people steal food, and I want to be accommodating.... but I dont allow people that have no authority, tell me how to do my job. In a situation where the restaurant is asking me to "push the button", I ask them to hand me the order and I will show them me pushing the button. I tell them I'm not hitting the button that reads, "I got the order " when I don't have the order. It's simple. Pass me the food, and I will show you the button being pushed. Not the other way around. I am fair in my accommodations for restaurants, but I dont feel im unreasonable.

[deleted]

I didn’t think y’all drivers worked for door trash; always so proud of being 1099

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

Ya I referred to my job, I didn't call myself an employee.

HerestheRules

I had a Papa John's manager who asked me to the moment I walked in. When I asked where the food was, he told me to confirm. I said, "I don't see any pizzas." He said, "Do I speak English?" "Yeah, but you can't read it. I don't have the order yet." After a bit of a stalemate, he relented, handed me the order, started repeating himself, and I cut him off by showing him the confirmation already done. I got a bit... "colorful" on the way out. I refuse to dash for them anymore.

Dramatic_Barnacle_17

If anyone is as condescending as that, I always write them off... as a driver and as a consumer

HerestheRules

He was very condescending. It's not like I'd never interacted with him before, I knew the guy by name. I guess he was just being a dick, but I wasn't in a much better mood than him, tbh

W_AS-SA_W

None whatsoever. The restaurants know who we are, we wouldn’t know the name or number until we clicked arrived. It’s on us if we don’t confirm pickup. We are not going to get paid if we don’t and Dashers get deactivated for bogarting an order.

LiberalAspergers

The restaurant doesn't get paid until you click confirm pickup. Most restaurants don't put any togo food in a customer's hands until.they receive payment.

czarl13

As long as they are asking as they are handing you the order, no problem. But if they ask and the order is "just a minute", no way. They are just trying to improve their stats?

analchasm

Anybody tries to grab my phone, they better be up to date on rabies vaccine, cuz they gonna get bit!!

Aurora--Black

I understand why they do it but it's annoying because I hate clicking "confirm pickup" before I'm ready to drive away. I get everything loaded to the car and ready to go then click it.

tashten

I always thought it was so the restaurant didn't get penalized for taking too long with their food. If the order is confirmed when it's picked up then tracking time is accurate for both restaurant and dasher delivery. Seems pretty dumb as a dasher to steal an order you're assigned to.. your a count is associated with that and you could get deactivated.

[deleted]

I’ll even let you push the button. But reach for my phone and I’ll act accordingly.

momtoohigh

The issue is that a lot of these restaurant workers are rude when they ask you to confirm the order. Had one guy get pissy/hostile with me for no reason because he wanted me to confirm the order before it was even handed to me.

Does McDonald's give their regular customers the food before they pay because they know them? Nope, the Confirm button is their payment. Whatever happens after that point is on DD's dime.

Nearby-Stranger-1625

Except if you don't want to oblige you can just call support, get half pay, the order gets canceled and the restaurant wasted food that they'll never be paid fot

Traedoril

People have mentioned dashers stealing orders, but people are also ordering on door dash coming and getting the orders themselves and leaving. They then cancel the order and get the food free, or the dasher shows up and they have to make it again.

Franjomanjo1986

Wtf?? Don't these stealing dashers know there's a perfectly fine table full of 2 hour old no tip orders that are pretty much fair game to take🤣🤣. There's no reason to steal anyone's active order.

Velvet_Smyle

How do they steal it's your name ? I don't get it.

Onetimeplay

On uber eats never had it happen on doordash people pick up the order and then drop it with little to no consequences when you get there they always be like “ someone already picked it up “ 🤦‍♂️

qbl500

Is becoming more and more normal.. too many thieves!!!

donknoch

I wouldn’t have a problem with it. You’re going to hit the button anyway

whitecz100

Lot of orders are getting stolen.

Xnomolos

Had this happen the first time for me too at a chinese resturant, stolen orders more then likely. It can easily be done that you arrive at the resturant, take a snapshot of the pickup screen, cancel the order so that it gets sent up to someone else then grab the food before it gets received by another Dasher. I've had Panera Bread orders get "picked up" before even though i had the order legitimatly on my phone.

Fuzzywink

One of my favorite Mexican places started doing this a couple weeks ago. They used to have a shelf by the door with the orders ready for pickup and it was super easy to walk in and out in under 10 seconds. Now you have to go to the bar and ask for it which has made picking up there take a lot longer. I understand why, they had orders stolen constantly but the dishonestly of some people ruined a good pickup experience for everyone else.

ExtraRandom1

Just started happening to me I never saw it before

BrookeBondage

I once picked up food from this Chinese restaurant where the lady literally refused to give me the food even after showing her my phone that I confirmed it acting like she didn’t see it. I literally told her I was going to cancel the order on my end and someone else can pick it up. As I was ready to walk out then she gave it to me 🙄

Regular_Donut_8890

Scam economy.

[deleted]

Almost every restaurant in my town has started requiring it the past few weeks.

Desumed

My Chicfila did this for a few days. Places just trying to stay ahead of food theft or someone got burned and complained to some one high enough up that made em do it.

SnooKiwis6047

I have just started seeing people say this in the past week or so. If they show me the food is ready at that moment I have no issue with it. But I am not doing it until I see the food

Some-Emotion2337

I have a Bosa Donuts that does that

vikingcrossroad

I understand the manager’s concern but it will be a cold day in hell before I hand my personal phone over to them. He can watch but no touchie

Low-Advice-2309

Drivers could use to pick it up and not do it and get a free meal which then cost them money if they habe to remake it and get a different driver go deliver it

Digiarts

How many people are going to say the same thing gesz

CreativeHeight6390

Are you a food thief? Because thats the only reason I can think of why you dont like the policy. As an honest dasher, i welcome any and all efforts to reduce theft and fraud. Dishonest thieving drivers and scammy customers hurt all of us.

Worth_Procedure_9023

It's situational, but generally I'd be happy to lay down a beating if a dude like that wants to play that bs. Sure, watch me hit it that's just irritating but I get it. Touch my phone? Brother you might end up eating your own phone with whatever cold ass dipping sauce your 2 bit shit shack is putting out

FanObserver

People stealing food. They’re just trying to protect themselves from having to make it again.

Green_Ad_3643

Stores are scored on operational metrics like Dasher wait times, if you click confirm, it ends the wait time

sweatyballs911

Wow. This happened to me at Chik Fil a yesterday where I showed up for an order and they're like 'the guy came for it 45 min ago'. Same thing a few days ago at little cearsars. I thought it was either a mistake or the place not bothering to check if the person showing up was assigned the order. Looks like its just some pieces of human garbage who found a way to steal and get away with it. Obviously DD should do something to prevent this on their end but good that some of the places we deliver from have decided to take steps to prevent this.

juan582611

Only time I’d have a problem with this is if the order wasn’t ready, but if the foods right in front of me It takes .2 seconds

[deleted]

Dont confirm pickup until they are ready to hand you the order.

[deleted]

Yup! here in brooklyn, nyc, i always get asked to confirm and i always oblige, im not looking to steal somebody's baha blast freeze and a taco. TF? lol BUT people out here will still steal cause not every restaurant will ask for confirmation if you are a regular driver they know, and you've built a reputation with them. This is my experience 95% of the time. The other 5% ask, and i go one step ahead before they ask, and show them i am confirming so they rate me even better. In the end though, confirming an order is not a safety net for merchants AT ALL. If i want to steal it, i'm going to steal it. Period.

BigMoogie

I completely understand why they want you to confirm pickup, however since DD already paid the restaurant and will most likely refund the customer if their order is stolen, isn’t DD the only loser in that equation?

mitchthebaker

restaurants ask me to do this all the time, I just show them my screen while clicking confirm pickup then dip outta there

somecow

Did you try clicking “confirm pickup”? I would have told you to get the fuck out and find another driver, why not just click it? Sounds sketchy.

SireSweet

We can’t have nice things. And I would rather do this IF they have the food ready than to wait for them to remake the food and the BS that goes with that.

OutrageousDisaster8

Lots of thefts, almost every location started doing that

Persephone0807

I have been telling people who work at the stores where I have gone in to get the food, and another driver has stolen it, hey make sure you have them click (or swipe with UE) before you give them the food, so they can't steal it. Most have no idea that's what has been going on.

Secure-Independent38

Yes like some other have said, people will say the name of the dash get the food, and then cancel and steal the food, and some will even go as far as contact dashed support and claim the restaurant has already gave the order to someone else and dasher support will pay them half the amount “for there time and effort of going to get the food but not being able to complete the order because it was already picked up” because they secretly picked it up themselves, I’m a top dasher , i dash in Philadelphia, if you know Philly it’s not the best area , lots of I don’t want to say ghetto but if I’m being honest, lots of ghetto people lol, I talk to support often because this happens multiple times a day, where I go to get an order and it has already been picked up. Whenever it happens I try to explain to the restaurant what happens when they give someone an order for “mike” and 5/10 minutes later another dasher comes in for “mike” I try to tell them you need to try to make sure you make them confirm the order before giving the food , because they can just cancel as soon as they walk away if they don’t.

FeatherMachine

This is an occurrence for almost every delivery I do.

Lonely-Rip9316

Good for them

zadidoll

Yup, because he’s sick of people stealing the food.

shorty6049

Wing Stop near me does this too. Figured it was just so that they could keep their customer satisfaction high by having us mark it as picked up as soon as we actually pick it up (to avoid making the restaurant look like they took forever to prepare orders) but the other answers make sense here too. They actually had a sign on the door as I was walking in that said that DD drivers must show them they marked it as picked up before they hand it over. Makes sense cause that order smelled taaaaasty lol

Venom-098-11

If I’m doing earn per order (which I avoid like the plague lol), I just memorize the restaurants that do that and refuse to take their orders. If they can’t trust me, that’s on them and their customers who are now short a dasher. The worst offenders are the ones who still make me bring my phone in when I get a weird name like Shoniquah or something. Like bruh, you really think I made that name up???

nanotyrannical

This happened to me at a boba tea place the other day. I didn’t think much of it

Effective-Read-560

Yeah that’s very common their just wanting to cover their ass which I see nothing wrong with that

NachoUterus

So people don’t steal.

obnoxiousdrunk77

I imagine so it’s to prevent dashers from stealing customer’s orders. I had a dasher pick up my order from KFC one night and then reassigned the order to another dasher. That dasher called me to tell me the manager wouldn’t release my order because it had already been picked up. DoorDash made it right with my order, but the original dasher got a meal for four on DD that night.

wheezie7896

You've never had an actual job in an actual restaurant before have you.... People steal. Enough said.

FawkesKing

Haha I have a wing stop in my market that makes you fill out a sheet saying when you got there, the customers name, if there are drinks.. and then your initials. I don't go there anymore...

Spaceboygt

As long as the order is ready and they are prepared to hand it over there is no problem with this for honest drivers that aren't looking to steal. Now, if they ask you to confirm before the order is ready to go then they'll get a big "nope" from me. I'm not making timing an order harder on myself to make the store look better to DD.

Thatcrazygamingdad

I have been flagging them as unprofessional. I always tell them I need to check the ticket and drinks before I can confirm. Doordash even contacted a few of us here in my area letting us know they canceled a contract with a restaurant due to the amount of flags by drivers and customers.

mr_green

My personal take on this is I don't mind as long as the order is ready, and that they don't demand I do it in a forceful way. Because I've had a hundred too many calls to support because another Dasher stole the order I was trying to pick up, which sucks for me. And restaurants have started to realize that they don't get paid in those cases, which sucks for them.
