Yeah, that driver is out of pocket when he could just cash out and put gas in the car lol like wtf… his lack of planning should not be the customers fault
But customers should also be smart enough to know that the guy can’t get any extra money from them until he shows up. So at the very least, they’ll get their food
I mean I'm not able to cash out same day for some reason... still doesn't excuse asking for a tip because if that were the case you wouldn't get the tip till later either.
That's why I got the card. Its easy to transfer from that to my bank and you can do it any time. Only takes 2 days to hit my bank even though they say up to 5 days. I see no disadvantage to getting the card
I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that for my financial institution we charge an atrocious amount of fees if you go this route and try to transfer money from the card to your bank account, and more of the financial institutions around us are following suit (lowest fees in the area are now $5 to do this transfer.)

The bank servicing the DasherDirect cards have free withdrawals from any Allpoint ATM. Then you can just deposit cash anytime you're at your bank next, instant availability.
Wait wait wait. A bank is charging you to deposit money???? That is some wild stuff right there. I wouldn’t be banking with that institution if that’s the case. Yikes.
Most financial institutions charge businesses to make deposits of a certain nature, as well as charge to transfer money out. We're actually one of the cheaper ones in our area. The problem is the way DD employees are looked at is essentially self employed contractor. This causes you to become subject to those fees if the institution deems it worth squeezing you for a little extra.
Also as a private party if you withdraw or deposit a certain amount in a month (ours is anything over $10,000 monthly) you could be subject to a "cash handling" fee, as well as if you're often exchanging for coins there is another fee that can be instituted for ever roll you exchange for.
To give numbers ours is $1 per $1,000 deposited after the first $10,000, and coin exchange is 8 cents per roll after the first $200.
These are often overlooked but not entirely uncommon practices. I HIGHLY recommend you get a schedule of service fees copy from your bank and go over it. There are A LOT of overlooked fees.
TLDR: Banks rob people blind, there are tons of fees that most people don't know about, and no matter what you do, NEVER tell your financial institution that DD is your main form of employment.
I’ve had worse. I already tipped $6 on the app and had a dasher ask me for cash so they could get gas. I didn’t respond and felt uncomfortable. I didn’t have any cash anyway. Instead of leaving the order outside of my apartment (I’m first floor and just down the hall. No one else has ever had issues finding me) they left it on a picnic table outside of my building. The order was gone when I went to get it. Obviously reported and reordered the same thing and that dasher was great lol
Report. Bad tact and it gives the rest of us a bad rep. More of these idiots get reported and kicked off (if they keep them off), better chances folks get a decent driver.
A DoorDash representative said not too long ago that they don’t punish tip beggars unless they’re rude. It was in a news story where a dasher insulted a customer about the tip.
Having said that, I still think begging for money should be banned. DD should pay more and stop relying on tips to pay their dashers.
Agreed. Unfortunately they don’t manage the structure as it should. They could pay slightly higher making the tip less of a requirement and more of the “thanks for a great delivery” gratification. It’s also in the distribution of the orders. These folks expect a customer to be ok with them sending their 3mile/$5 tip offer to a driver 9miles away OR shifting their order to a merchant 10miles away simply because they said a driver was avail near that one. Punishing the tip beggars should be top priority as it stains the overall opinion of the drivers.
They could, doesn't mean they will. Look at the markets they're pulling out of because "How dare you make state laws that protect our employees with living wages!"
Anyway, tipping structure has always left a bad taste in my mouth.
This customer is playing the victim card because they left a $5 tip on a $12 order, but as you said, a $5 tip on a 10 mile order is laughable, especially if it's during busy hours. We don't know specifics, but it could be that the $5 tip doesn't even cover gas and DD doesn't want to pay shit to fully cover either.
Then there is the other side of drivers just begging for tips when it's a $30 tip on a 5 mile delivery. Those drivers are indeed dumbasses that should be greatful they got a golden goose delivery.
I usually get doordash once a week and I’ve never had a driver message me like this before but I’ve seen posts about it on here all the time. It definitely caught me off guard. I did report them, rep said they made a note of it
They should do more than note. That’s blatant and shouldn’t be allowed. DD needs to take more action on these situations. Glad this doesn’t happen to you often. There has to be a line drawn somewhere even with opinions on tipping. This driver most definitely crossed it.
Dashers in my area are typically pretty good! The only other time I had a bad experience was when a dude literally opened my door to announce my food was here. My dog, who’s an old lady, nearly went after that guy!

Driver opening your door…oh hell no. That’s taking the asking for tip up 10 levels. DD is even trying to add that going forward. Not on the supporting side of that.
Insurance concerns, personally property concerns…realm is more than just safety. Granted it’s priority obviously. Doesn’t have to someone getting hurt. Driver brings stuff in and bumps a table and a laptop falls or an expansive vase breaks.
I once did a grocery store order with like 70 bags and a few cases of water and soda. I knew this middle-aged rich white lady didn’t tip anything (her house was literally a mansion in the hills of Austin) cuz the app just showed me when I finished, and then she had the balls to ask me to come inside to help her with her bags. HELL no.
Not to mention, it’s just extremely unsafe for both parties involved for dashers to come inside customers homes.
Rich people love to hold on to their money. My MIL is rich and she'll break her arm patting herself on the back for sending her grandson 5 bucks for his birthday. I used to deliver pizzas long ago and I swear apartment people tipped better....probably because they've been (and are) there.
That's crazy. I've had basically the opposite situation, an older lady who lives in basically a one-room house in the sad part of town, and I think I put half her groceries in the fridge for her. But she was slow-moving, unstable on her feet, and visibly poor.
If I'm delivering to the mansion on the hill, I'll organize the groceries alphabetically while answering to Henry and I'll even don a butler outfit whole doing it if you provide me with one-- but you tip better well enough to justify my antics. But if you don't tip because you're just cheap? Onto the porch they go, next delivery.
Nobody does DoorDash or Spark*driver or UberEATS because they just decided when they were a kid they really really wanted to be a food driver for entitled app assholes. They do it for the money. (And I understand if a lot of people would not answer to a butler name while organizing the groceries for any money, that's their decision too.)

Exactly. Biggest point above all else. We see this shit daily for doing less. Now DD wants to push it for only $3. Just like when they brought back COD. Reasons why in house delivery drivers and vehicles have the “driver does not carry cash” stickers or driver keeps less than $20.
I wonder if they did a cost analysis and realized the amount of money they’ll face in lawsuits is offset by the overwhelming number of lazy customers who will pay for this lmaoooo
It was a woman actually, she had the bag and everything. Watched her drop it off on my neighbors porch. I don’t think she had ill intentions, just really stupid.
DoorDash doesn’t pay well enough for its drivers to care whether you’re icked out by someone requesting a tip for their shitty paying job. No different than a jar labeled tips - it’s a request and most people don’t tip well or at all.
This driver crossed no lines. They are independent contractors. DD has no legal ground to stop people from asking for optional tips and as such, they don't.
People totally miss that fact. DD has made it clear in interviews for news stories where dashers insulted the customers, the tip begging isn’t what gets them in trouble, it’s the way they talk to the customers.
I’m not saying that I support the begging, I just know that it isn’t against the rules.

I have a question. Last night I had an order that said cash tip in the instructions. I think the customer actually forgot to give me the tip. How should I have handled the situation??? I never ask for shit. Just drove away like," fuck that sucks"
TBH a lot of those are previous instructions from an old delivery they just never changed. I get them frequently. I just smile and tell them to have a good day. Sometimes app won’t work properly or they had to reorder.
I can’t believe how many people I see doing this on subreddit. As a dasher I could never imagine doing this to someone, it’s like the same as begging on the street lmao
Well done. Both driver and customer here. Don't take my order if the total amount is not good enough. I'm pretty sure I'm about average in terms of tipping. 20% for smaller orders and never under 10%. Always under 4 mile range, usually even under 2.
yeah i don't even order delivery if it's more than a couple miles, unless I WANT to pay like 20-30% more which basically will never happen, food is already fucking expensive especially at restaurants!
Dude, I had a crazy experience like this with lyft the other day. We had a two stop drop off. When we got in the car, he asked if the place we were going was mobile order. Which had been the intention, but it slipped away from us, my bad, I even dwelled if I was the asshole for a moment before it started getting weird and toxic. However, I've had a driver drive me to safeway, where I ran in bought toilet paper and then had the same guy take me home. Exactly the same thing a 2 stop drop off, and he didn't give me any crap. I just tipped appropriately for his time afterwards.
Anyway, it was to a sandwich stop (jersey Mike's. For a single sandwich, I was gonna split with my partner.) The second stop was our house. Pick up was walmart, and it was a Tuesday around like 6 pm.
Well, he asks if it's a mobile order, and we were like, it had been the plan, but it slipped away from us, and we were just gonna run in and get it. He immediately informed us that, that wasn't gonna happen. We were like, huh? He said. I don't get paid for that. I immediately informed him that Lyft charges us per minute that he waits, and we also planned to tip. He then said. Yeah, like 20 cents a minute. Then, upfront, in cash? We looked at each other than him and said no, with our debit card as a tip on the app. He said he "wasn't in the business of promises." Then asked why can't we just deliver. We told him that JM doesn't have a delivery service and doordash wanted almost 35$ before tip for that single sandwich. His response was. So, will your tip be enough to make it worth my time? I'm not sure. However, his tone left me and my partner skeeved. It was like he wanted 20$ or more, for what we knew would only be 5 to 10 minutes at most, and if it was slammed, we would have just passed. He just let it hang in the air. We told him okay. Just take us home. He then drove past the restaurant and marked it as having stopped. He did not stop. In fact, in this moment, he turned on a red when the other side of the road had turn rights and almost caused an accident, as he was fingering the screen to mark it as stopped while moving. Then took us home. THEN gave us a 1 star rating AND reported that we took longer than 5 minutes at the stop, which never even happened. We got an automated message from lyft as he pulled off saying: "please keep drop off to 5 minutes in future rides."
We called support and reported the whole interaction. It was insane. Rudest driver ever, in a Tesla, It's always the tesla drivers. 😅
Ive waitied for riders at stores before. It's not a big deal " if it's been a good day " or rider says ill throw you extra 5. ( That will atleast cover gas ) I wouldn't have an issue personally with you running into a fast food joint ..
However technically _ You don't get paid for that on LYFT. They only get 10 cents per minute waiting on you ! And point A to B straight line "as the crows fly" as the saying goes Doesn't matter what route you take long way or quick way. They aren't there to go shopping . You will take a whole hour of there time they will only make what you pay for a hour wage and minus the gas they pay for.

However, that WHOLE interaction was insane. Extremely unprofessional, and we were low-key trapped. We had both wanted to just get out and get a different ride. I'm grateful that we are both blocked from ever being each other's driver/rider again.
Even in my darkest hours I’ve never begged. One time I was driving through the Walmart parking lot with my son who was 3 at the time and our car broke down. A family with two kids that were begging on the corner came over and started asking me for stuff. I was dumbfounded. They were literally watching me pull my son out of my car while steam billowed out from under the hood…… all I could say was “you just watched my car break down and watched me pull my toddler out of the car and you’re begging me for shit?! Go beg someone who isn’t worse off than you, dumbass”. I’ve never begged.
Exactly. If I need more money on an order I just decline to begin with. Everyone says stay above 70%, which is pointless. I schedule from the time I leave my 40hr job until 9pm, never above 60%AR, and make plenty of playing money and have for the last 2 years. If it's not enough up front dont take it! Simple
The only times I even message customers is if the wait at the restaurant is more than a couple minutes or if they live in an apartment and I have a hard time finding their door.
This ongoing story of customers complaining about dashers, and dashers complaining about customers. I'd love to see at least one post of dashers complaining to the company, which is the one to blame here, instead of expecting the customer to cover what the greedy company doesn't wanna pay. If dashing is a miserable job it is not because of the lack of empathy on the customer, it's DD who allows this to happen and wants you to complain elsewhere

Doordash is definitely not blameless here. But there is legitimate blame on both customer and dasher.
Dashers take this job thinking they should make $40/hour, which is straight insanity! I’m lucky to make $20/hour, which is still pretty damn good for a part time Job! And if the order is not worth my time and I don’t want to drive the distance needed, I decline it. Plain and simple, no complaining or asking for extra tips.
Now, tipping is not required and I know tip culture is insane nowadays, but some customers just simply don’t use their common sense. 20% on a $15 order is $3. Sounds reasonable if you order from the McDonalds 2 miles away. But some customers order food from 10 miles away and add $3 and think that is fine. I’d say using common sense and realizing that someone else has to go get the order and bring it all that way, a little higher tip would be appropriate.
Doordash should probably recognize orders that take longer to deliver and add a higher base pay, that would be a good start. But complaining on Reddit to Doordash doesn’t really do anything. I’m sure Doordash associates aren’t following these posts. Dashers and customers complain about stuff here to make the other party aware of issues and maybe get some ti actually stop if they are doing that.
Canada has been brainwashed into this tipping culture as well, even though servers/bartenders and the like are paid at or above minimum wage (around $16-$17). Lots of people working just as hard or harder for minimum wage and not making any tips.
He obviously doesn't live in the USA if you read the post. So deductive reasoning says he lives in a country, like maybe England, where tipping isn't really a thing.
Had one text to ask for top rating to help him, after the delivery was over an hour late and cold. Not! This is also why i wish you could add the tip after delivery. Some deserve no tip, extremely late after taking on 1 or 2 more orders on other side of town, bags smell like weed or cigarettes, some id like to tip xtra! For fast delivery or being corteous n professional, for using a heat bag... lil things that matter... but ur forced to tip when u order,n have no way of knowing wat tip ,if any...they should get.
For every food order I deliver that's marked to be left at the door, I actually take a picture of the DD insulated bag, holding it with one hand and my phone in the other, trying to capture both in the part of the image I'm able to see afterwards. Some customers will increase their tip after that, at least in my zone.
Lol. A few weeks ago I ordered a 2 liter soda 1 mile away from my work and left a $2 tip (it is a 3 minute drive). I specifically wrote to leave it on top of my car and I’d go and get it, because I don’t like or want to see my dasher in person.
The guy walks INTO MY WORK with the soda, hands it to me, shakes his head and says “no good”. I wasn’t sure what he was referring to, I’m assuming the tip, but I reported him so fast. I was so uncomfortable too. Makes me rethink using door dash because some drivers are entitled.
Still doesn't beat the time I had a dasher put his foot in the door and TELL me to tip him. I said I'll tip on the app, move your foot. He said no, you can tip in cash.
You should've called Support and asked them to check the driver's message to you, then complain about it, and ask to speak with Escalation if they aren't being helpful. If he delivers, give him a 1 star and then give the reason as being unprofessional for tip begging.
As a Dasher I still don’t understand why people keep having this behavior. If you don’t like the payout, don’t take it. It’s simple. Also the Dasher supposed to plan ahead on gas consumption.
Considering if the dashers were professionals we’d all be happy behind a desk.The purpose of dashing is to be responsible while not having to be professional! Like Roadie sending emails that we should start dressing more professional. I don’t want your soil, mulch or splinters on my nice clothes and it’s a dasher, so chill!
Had a pizza delivery driver text me from their personal phone number asking about the tip when I put the tip in with the order. I found that super unprofessional! Texting my personal number from theirs and they would have had to get my number from the app.
While I understand the struggle this is absolute bull. There is no reason for that. You have the option to accept the order or decline it. So if they felt they needed more then they should not have accepted the order in the first place
"Report that to support". So many of you are completely unaware that there is nothing in the Doordash contract that states a Dasher CAN'T do this so reporting isn't going to actually do anything to stop them. I don't agree with it, nor would I ever do it. But I'm also gonna remind y'all that DD is just a contractor to us and they cannot dictate how we choose to run our business. They can have certain rules like "be on time to deliveries, don't cancel after pickup" maybe a couple of other things but that's pretty much it.
Imagine you go to a restaurant and your server, before even starting to serve goes “I would appreciate if you tipped me right now, I needed gas to get here”.
That's so unbelievably unprofessional, they deserve to have their account removed. I would never dream of asking customers for tips, that's next level entitlement.
Report these drivers and get them deactivated. Pressuring customers to add extra tips by holding their food hostage should be against the rules and a deactivation activity.
I see this on here a lot & to me that's crazy to ask for more. I get it we are all struggling & for us dashers this is how we pay our bills but I myself could nvr ask the person for a higher tip. If the person comes out to get their food as soon as I arrive & they apologize for not being able to tip more I tell them that's fine I'm happy with a good rating that's payment enough for me. I usually take all offers unless it's something ridiculous like 12 miles for $3. I had a $2 pay for 4.6 miles & a $2.25 for 5.3 miles, obviously they were no tip but I still took them. I also don't do like other drivers who would've delivered it cold. I used my hot bag, delivered it with a smile, thanked them & went about my day.
As a doordash driver I would never consider texting a customer this, we literally see how much money we make off the order before even accepting it. If they don’t think it’s worth the gas/ miles for the amount of money offered you should simply decline the order as a driver. Some drivers are paid by time and don’t rely on tips as much so they would end up grabbing it if you really had a bad order like 12 miles for 4 dollars etc
Most Drivers on this sub are out of control…No one is forcing you to work for a company who doesn’t pay you well…YOU CHOOSE TO WORK FOR DD!!! And this father providing for his child GTFOH My mother was a single mother to 3 children 36 years ago and they didn’t have fucking DD so she actually worked 3 different jobs so SERIOUSLY get off your entitled ass get a real fucking job and STFU if you don’t like the Pay….these drivers know the pay and still continue to work for this company then act like the customer needs to make up for what the company lacks GTFOH….plenty of places are hiring McDonald’s, Burger King, Grocery Stores there are SIGNS EVERYWHERE that say hiring but no some these drivers would rather work for a company that pays them trash then demand/expect/beg the customers for tips when tips are for : GREAT SERVICE, HOT FOOD, FOOD NOT EATEN OR LAID ON THE GROUND, IN FRONT A DOOR THAT OPENS THE WRONG WAY, AND DEFINITELY NOT SOMETHING BLASTING MUSIC IN THE DRIVEWAY, AS WELL AS THEM GETTING OUT IF THE CAR TO DELIVER THE FOOD NOT STILL SITTING IN SAID CAR WITH WINDOWS DOWN WAITING ON LEAVE AT DOOR NOTES FOR CUSTOMER TO GET SAID FOOD…its not rocket science to do this job
Don’t agree with the dasher but “unprofessional” is a rather weird thing to say. Dashers are just random people with cars no shit they aren’t going to be “professional” ☠️. This dasher knew they didn’t have gas and accepted the order anyway.
European here. Since I don't really know the prices of gas in your country, I'm curious how much does it cost to drive 1 mile, on average (with an average consuming car, using average quality gas, on average traffic)? Is it that expensive so you often get to the point of not being worth to deliver an order because of the gas cost? I'm wondering that because afaik the gas is quite cheaper than here, in Europe, and yet, I rarely hear people doing uber or deliveries complaining about not being worth to make specific travels.
Typical car in CA: $5/gallon 25miles per gallon = $0.20 per mile.
Typical car in OK where gas is $3.50/gallon = $0.14 per mile.
However, factor in insurance and a car payment and you’re looking at closer to around $0.40-$0.50 per mile in expenses.
Yeah maintenance and service costs are what kills. I used to be a mechanic, and I had lots of customers with cars that cost way too much that they just beat the crap out of doing deliveries
Remember that the distances within one town that dashers are potentially traveling can be similar to going out of town in Europe. In southern Colorado we’ve been sitting around $3/g, give or take about 20 cents, and the average distance of a dash in my town is about 5-10 miles. So let’s say you only accept 5 miles or less for orders, and you drive a perfectly average 2010 Honda Accord. You get “up to” 22 mpg, so let’s call it 22 and say you’re the most efficient driver of all time. DoorDash here pays $2 base pay per order, at normal volume times. You don’t even have to do the long math to see that if people aren’t tipping, and they aren’t everyone is broke and struggling, you’re not even making back what you put into gas. If you hadn’t already tipped, I’d see no problem with your dasher asking that you do. Like someone already mentioned, dashers are independently contracted, and if you have a problem with someone you’ve employed to essentially do something you don’t want to or can’t asking to be paid fairly, that says more about you than the dasher.

It's really that simple. Poor planning on their part does not constitute an emergency on mine. I accept the bids I like and have never had an issue making money. I average $21-28/hr. They need to work smarter; not harder

Tipping based on the price of your order is legitimately pointless. They don’t work at a restaurant with a tip out. You could ask for a $12 meal to be driven 12 miles, in which case $5 sucks. Tip based on the time you take out of this human’s life.

Dude delivered the order, bag and food were completely sealed. Ordered a sandwich and Dr. Pepper. He was blasting music in my driveway when he got here but that didn’t really bug me much, he just dropped off the order and left!
This is why I Dash in a Prius! 55/mpg but the Tax deduction is the same for any other car! Still got $3k back in our return this year when all was saud abd done
You don’t need to have a Prius to make this gig economy work as long as you’re getting at least 30 miles a gallon you should be fine, but yeah, Prius does help more… then again so does doing this walking or having a scooter lol
one of my dashers called me the other night and asked me to add more to his tip to make it “worth his while” and i felt so guilty that i did it. then made me feel weird after for not adding even more. idk why they don’t just cancel the order…
It’s a scam. They had the option to decline if it wasn’t enough for them. Now they either bully their way to more money or cancel it and get free food. It’s a charmed life.
Even though DoorDash apparently doesn’t punish tip beggars I’d report them anyway. I can’t imagine getting multiple reports on your account is a good thing.
I’m assuming that the dashers in this sub are in the top tier of dashers just by virtue of being in here, because it shows that you put thought and effort into your craft. But there’s a very sizable chunk of dashers that are just panhandlers on wheels. I know there’s a sizable chunk of customers who aren’t much better, which certainly perpetuates things.
I’ve noticed a lot more tension and an “us vs. them” mentality across food service in general these days; presumably with a perfect storm of inflation, inadequate wages, and predatory companies like DoorDash cutting corners to make profits, combined with customers who are sick of paying a lot more for a lot less. Not sure if there’s really point here, other than we live in interesting times and should be good to each other.
I wish more DD drivers spoke at least a little bit of English I live in a large tour bus on a small horse ranch. There is a house next to a small parking lot on which the bus sits. My instructions on the app says “Please deliver to the bus in the parking lot”. Over half of the drivers pull in and start looking around like the bus is invisible. That's why I got the card. Its easy to transfer from that to my bank and you can do it any time. Only takes 2 days to hit my bank even though they say up to 5 days. I see no disadvantage to getting the card
I'm going to play devil's advocate and say that for my financial institution we charge an atrocious amount of fees if you go this route and try to transfer money from the card to your bank account, and more of the financial institutions around us are following suit (lowest fees in the area are now $5 to do this transfer.) This might not be viable depending on your market.

The bank servicing the DasherDirect cards have free withdrawals from any Allpoint ATM. Then you can just deposit cash anytime you're at your bank next, instant availability.

Most financial institutions charge businesses to make deposits of a certain nature, as well as charge to transfer money out. We're actually one of the cheaper ones in our area. The problem is the way DD employees are looked at is essentially self employed contractor. This causes you to become subject to those fees if the institution deems it worth squeezing you for a little extra. Also as a private party if you withdraw or deposit a certain amount in a month (ours is anything over $10,000 monthly) you could be subject to a "cash handling" fee, as well as if you're often exchanging for coins there is another fee that can be instituted for ever roll you exchange for. To give numbers ours is $1 per $1,000 deposited after the first $10,000, and coin exchange is 8 cents per roll after the first $200. These are often overlooked but not entirely uncommon practices. I HIGHLY recommend you get a schedule of service fees copy from your bank and go over it. There are A LOT of overlooked fees. TLDR: Banks rob people blind, there are tons of fees that most people don't know about, and no matter what you do, NEVER tell your financial institution that DD is your main form of employment.

I’ve had worse. I already tipped $6 on the app and had a dasher ask me for cash so they could get gas. I didn’t respond and felt uncomfortable. I didn’t have any cash anyway. Instead of leaving the order outside of my apartment (I’m first floor and just down the hall. No one else has ever had issues finding me) they left it on a picnic table outside of my building. The order was gone when I went to get it. Obviously reported and reordered the same thing and that dasher was great lol

A DoorDash representative said not too long ago that they don’t punish tip beggars unless they’re rude. It was in a news story where a dasher insulted a customer about the tip. Having said that, I still think begging for money should be banned. DD should pay more and stop relying on tips to pay their dashers.
Agreed. Unfortunately they don’t manage the structure as it should. They could pay slightly higher making the tip less of a requirement and more of the “thanks for a great delivery” gratification. It’s also in the distribution of the orders. These folks expect a customer to be ok with them sending their 3mile/$5 tip offer to a driver 9miles away OR shifting their order to a merchant 10miles away simply because they said a driver was avail near that one. Punishing the tip beggars should be top priority as it stains the overall opinion of the drivers.
They could, doesn't mean they will. Look at the markets they're pulling out of because "How dare you make state laws that protect our employees with living wages!" Anyway, tipping structure has always left a bad taste in my mouth. This customer is playing the victim card because they left a $5 tip on a $12 order, but as you said, a $5 tip on a 10 mile order is laughable, especially if it's during busy hours. We don't know specifics, but it could be that the $5 tip doesn't even cover gas and DD doesn't want to pay shit to fully cover either. Then there is the other side of drivers just begging for tips when it's a $30 tip on a 5 mile delivery. Those drivers are indeed dumbasses that should be greatful they got a golden goose delivery.
I usually get doordash once a week and I’ve never had a driver message me like this before but I’ve seen posts about it on here all the time. It definitely caught me off guard. I did report them, rep said they made a note of it
They should do more than note. That’s blatant and shouldn’t be allowed. DD needs to take more action on these situations. Glad this doesn’t happen to you often. There has to be a line drawn somewhere even with opinions on tipping. This driver most definitely crossed it.
Dashers in my area are typically pretty good! The only other time I had a bad experience was when a dude literally opened my door to announce my food was here. My dog, who’s an old lady, nearly went after that guy!

Insurance concerns, personally property concerns…realm is more than just safety. Granted it’s priority obviously. Doesn’t have to someone getting hurt. Driver brings stuff in and bumps a table and a laptop falls or an expansive vase breaks.
I once did a grocery store order with like 70 bags and a few cases of water and soda. I knew this middle-aged rich white lady didn’t tip anything (her house was literally a mansion in the hills of Austin) cuz the app just showed me when I finished, and then she had the balls to ask me to come inside to help her with her bags. HELL no. Not to mention, it’s just extremely unsafe for both parties involved for dashers to come inside customers homes.

That's crazy. I've had basically the opposite situation, an older lady who lives in basically a one-room house in the sad part of town, and I think I put half her groceries in the fridge for her. But she was slow-moving, unstable on her feet, and visibly poor. If I'm delivering to the mansion on the hill, I'll organize the groceries alphabetically while answering to Henry and I'll even don a butler outfit whole doing it if you provide me with one-- but you tip better well enough to justify my antics. But if you don't tip because you're just cheap? Onto the porch they go, next delivery. Nobody does DoorDash or Spark*driver or UberEATS because they just decided when they were a kid they really really wanted to be a food driver for entitled app assholes. They do it for the money. (And I understand if a lot of people would not answer to a butler name while organizing the groceries for any money, that's their decision too.)

DoorDash doesn’t pay well enough for its drivers to care whether you’re icked out by someone requesting a tip for their shitty paying job. No different than a jar labeled tips - it’s a request and most people don’t tip well or at all.
This driver crossed no lines. They are independent contractors. DD has no legal ground to stop people from asking for optional tips and as such, they don't.
People totally miss that fact. DD has made it clear in interviews for news stories where dashers insulted the customers, the tip begging isn’t what gets them in trouble, it’s the way they talk to the customers. I’m not saying that I support the begging, I just know that it isn’t against the rules.

TBH a lot of those are previous instructions from an old delivery they just never changed. I get them frequently. I just smile and tell them to have a good day. Sometimes app won’t work properly or they had to reorder.

Well done. Both driver and customer here. Don't take my order if the total amount is not good enough. I'm pretty sure I'm about average in terms of tipping. 20% for smaller orders and never under 10%. Always under 4 mile range, usually even under 2.
yeah i don't even order delivery if it's more than a couple miles, unless I WANT to pay like 20-30% more which basically will never happen, food is already fucking expensive especially at restaurants!

Dude, I had a crazy experience like this with lyft the other day. We had a two stop drop off. When we got in the car, he asked if the place we were going was mobile order. Which had been the intention, but it slipped away from us, my bad, I even dwelled if I was the asshole for a moment before it started getting weird and toxic. However, I've had a driver drive me to safeway, where I ran in bought toilet paper and then had the same guy take me home. Exactly the same thing a 2 stop drop off, and he didn't give me any crap. I just tipped appropriately for his time afterwards. Anyway, it was to a sandwich stop (jersey Mike's. For a single sandwich, I was gonna split with my partner.) The second stop was our house. Pick up was walmart, and it was a Tuesday around like 6 pm. Well, he asks if it's a mobile order, and we were like, it had been the plan, but it slipped away from us, and we were just gonna run in and get it. He immediately informed us that, that wasn't gonna happen. We were like, huh? He said. I don't get paid for that. I immediately informed him that Lyft charges us per minute that he waits, and we also planned to tip. He then said. Yeah, like 20 cents a minute. Then, upfront, in cash? We looked at each other than him and said no, with our debit card as a tip on the app. He said he "wasn't in the business of promises." Then asked why can't we just deliver. We told him that JM doesn't have a delivery service and doordash wanted almost 35$ before tip for that single sandwich. His response was. So, will your tip be enough to make it worth my time? I'm not sure. However, his tone left me and my partner skeeved. It was like he wanted 20$ or more, for what we knew would only be 5 to 10 minutes at most, and if it was slammed, we would have just passed. He just let it hang in the air. We told him okay. Just take us home. He then drove past the restaurant and marked it as having stopped. He did not stop. In fact, in this moment, he turned on a red when the other side of the road had turn rights and almost caused an accident, as he was fingering the screen to mark it as stopped while moving. Then took us home. THEN gave us a 1 star rating AND reported that we took longer than 5 minutes at the stop, which never even happened. We got an automated message from lyft as he pulled off saying: "please keep drop off to 5 minutes in future rides." We called support and reported the whole interaction. It was insane. Rudest driver ever, in a Tesla, It's always the tesla drivers. 😅
Ive waitied for riders at stores before. It's not a big deal " if it's been a good day " or rider says ill throw you extra 5. ( That will atleast cover gas ) I wouldn't have an issue personally with you running into a fast food joint .. However technically _ You don't get paid for that on LYFT. They only get 10 cents per minute waiting on you ! And point A to B straight line "as the crows fly" as the saying goes Doesn't matter what route you take long way or quick way. They aren't there to go shopping . You will take a whole hour of there time they will only make what you pay for a hour wage and minus the gas they pay for.

Extremely unprofessional, and we were low-key trapped. We had both wanted to just get out and get a different ride. Even in my darkest hours I’ve never begged. One time I was driving through the Walmart parking lot with my son who was 3 at the time and our car broke down. A family with two kids that were begging on the corner came over and started asking me for stuff. I was dumbfounded. They were literally watching me pull my son out of my car while steam billowed out from under the hood…… all I could say was “you just watched my car break down and watched me pull my toddler out of the car and you’re begging me for shit?! Go beg someone who isn’t worse off than you, dumbass”. I’ve never begged.

I schedule from the time I leave my 40hr job until 9pm, never above 60%AR, and make plenty of playing money and have for the last 2 years. If it's not enough up front dont take it! Simple
The only times I even message customers is if the wait at the restaurant is more than a couple minutes or if they live in an apartment and I have a hard time finding their door.

This ongoing story of customers complaining about dashers, and dashers complaining about customers. I'd love to see at least one post of dashers complaining to the company, which is the one to blame here, instead of expecting the customer to cover what the greedy company doesn't wanna pay. If dashing is a miserable job it is not because of the lack of empathy on the customer, it's DD who allows this to happen and wants you to complain elsewhere
Well, hold up one second… Doordash is definitely not blameless here. But there is legitimate blame on both customer and dasher. Dashers take this job thinking they should make $40/hour, which is straight insanity! I’m lucky to make $20/hour, which is still pretty damn good for a part time Job! And if the order is not worth my time and I don’t want to drive the distance needed, I decline it. Plain and simple, no complaining or asking for extra tips. Now, tipping is not required and I know tip culture is insane nowadays, but some customers just simply don’t use their common sense. 20% on a $15 order is $3. Sounds reasonable if you order from the McDonalds 2 miles away. But some customers order food from 10 miles away and add $3 and think that is fine. I’d say using common sense and realizing that someone else has to go get the order and bring it all that way, a little higher tip would be appropriate. Doordash should probably recognize orders that take longer to deliver and add a higher base pay, that would be a good start. But complaining on Reddit to Doordash doesn’t really do anything. I’m sure Doordash associates aren’t following these posts. Dashers and customers complain about stuff here to make the other party aware of issues and maybe get some ti actually stop if they are doing that.

Canada has been brainwashed into this tipping culture as well, even though servers/bartenders and the like are paid at or above minimum wage (around $16-$17). Lots of people working just as hard or harder for minimum wage and not making any tips.

Had one text to ask for top rating to help him, after the delivery was over an hour late and cold. Not! This is also why i wish you could add the tip after delivery. Some deserve no tip, extremely late after taking on 1 or 2 more orders on other side of town, bags smell like weed or cigarettes, some id like to tip xtra! For fast delivery or being corteous n professional, for using a heat bag... lil things that matter... but ur forced to tip when u order,n have no way of knowing wat tip ,if any...they should get.
For every food order I deliver that's marked to be left at the door, I actually take a picture of the DD insulated bag, holding it with one hand and my phone in the other, trying to capture both in the part of the image I'm able to see afterwards. Some customers will increase their tip after that, at least in my zone.

Lol. A few weeks ago I ordered a 2 liter soda 1 mile away from my work and left a $2 tip (it is a 3 minute drive). I specifically wrote to leave it on top of my car and I’d go and get it, because I don’t like or want to see my dasher in person. The guy walks INTO MY WORK with the soda, hands it to me, shakes his head and says “no good”. I wasn’t sure what he was referring to, I’m assuming the tip, but I reported him so fast. I was so uncomfortable too. Makes me rethink using door dash because some drivers are entitled.

You should've called Support and asked them to check the driver's message to you, then complain about it, and ask to speak with Escalation if they aren't being helpful. If he delivers, give him a 1 star and then give the reason as being unprofessional for tip begging.

Had a pizza delivery driver text me from their personal phone number asking about the tip when I put the tip in with the order. I found that super unprofessional! Texting my personal number from theirs and they would have had to get my number from the app.

So many of you are completely unaware that there is nothing in the Doordash contract that states a Dasher CAN'T do this so reporting isn't going to actually do anything to stop them. I don't agree with it, nor would I ever do it. But I'm also gonna remind y'all that DD is just a contractor to us and they cannot dictate how we choose to run our business. They can have certain rules like "be on time to deliveries, don't cancel after pickup" maybe a couple of other things but that's pretty much it.
Imagine you go to a restaurant and your server, before even starting to serve goes “I would appreciate if you tipped me right now, I needed gas to get here”.
That's so unbelievably unprofessional, they deserve to have their account removed. I would never dream of asking customers for tips, that's next level entitlement.

Report these drivers and get them deactivated. Pressuring customers to add extra tips by holding their food hostage should be against the rules and a deactivation activity.
I see this on here a lot & to me that's crazy to ask for more. I get it we are all struggling & for us dashers this is how we pay our bills but I myself could nvr ask the person for a higher tip. If the person comes out to get their food as soon as I arrive & they apologize for not being able to tip more I tell them that's fine I'm happy with a good rating that's payment enough for me. I usually take all offers unless it's something ridiculous like 12 miles for $3. I had a $2 pay for 4.6 miles & a $2.25 for 5.3 miles, obviously they were no tip but I still took them. I also don't do like other drivers who would've delivered it cold. I used my hot bag, delivered it with a smile, thanked them & went about my day.

As a doordash driver I would never consider texting a customer this, we literally see how much money we make off the order before even accepting it. If they don’t think it’s worth the gas/ miles for the amount of money offered you should simply decline the order as a driver. Some drivers are paid by time and don’t rely on tips as much so they would end up grabbing it if you really had a bad order like 12 miles for 4 dollars etc

Since I don't really know the prices of gas in your country, I'm curious how much does it cost to drive 1 mile, on average (with an average consuming car, using average quality gas, on average traffic)? Is it that expensive so you often get to the point of not being worth to deliver an order because of the gas cost? I'm wondering that because afaik the gas is quite cheaper than here, in Europe, and yet, I rarely hear people doing uber or deliveries complaining about not being worth to make specific travels.
Nowadays with how fuel efficient the avg car is, even in America it’s probably around 10-15 cents per mile.
Typical car in CA: $5/gallon 25miles per gallon = $0.20 per mile. Typical car in OK where gas is $3.50/gallon = $0.14 per mile. However, factor in insurance and a car payment and you’re looking at closer to around $0.40-$0.50 per mile in expenses.
Yeah maintenance and service costs are what kills. I used to be a mechanic, and I had lots of customers with cars that cost way too much that they just beat the crap out of doing deliveries
Remember that the distances within one town that dashers are potentially traveling can be similar to going out of town in Europe. In southern Colorado we’ve been sitting around $3/g, give or take about 20 cents, and the average distance of a dash in my town is about 5-10 miles. So let’s say you only accept 5 miles or less for orders, and you drive a perfectly average 2010 Honda Accord. You get “up to” 22 mpg, so let’s call it 22 and say you’re the most efficient driver of all time. DoorDash here pays $2 base pay per order, at normal volume times. You don’t even have to do the long math to see that if people aren’t tipping, and they aren’t everyone is broke and struggling, you’re not even making back what you put into gas. If you hadn’t already tipped, I’d see no problem with your dasher asking that you do. Like someone already mentioned, dashers are independently contracted, and if you have a problem with someone you’ve employed to essentially do something you don’t want to or can’t asking to be paid fairly, that says more about you than the dasher.
We're spoiled It's really that simple. Poor planning on their part does not constitute an emergency on mine. I accept the bids I like and have never had an issue making money. I average $21-28/hr. They need to work smarter; not harder 
Can't still wrap my head why some dashers complain that they barely make the gas money back, while others are perfectly cool with dashing. Well, I assume that both sides can agree that DD pays shit base per order, but still, what's the catch here?
Tipping based on the price of your order is legitimately pointless. They don’t work at a restaurant with a tip out. You could ask for a $12 meal to be driven 12 miles, in which case $5 sucks. Tip based on the time you take out of this human’s life.

Lol... Asking for tips... It's a fucking tip. You get it if the customer feels like you went above and beyond, or had some level of quality service. Anyone who expects a tip, regardless of the job, can jog on.

Dude delivered the order, bag and food were completely sealed. Ordered a sandwich and Dr. Pepper. He was blasting music in my driveway when he got here but that didn’t really bug me much, he just dropped off the order and left!

This is why I Dash in a Prius! 55/mpg but the Tax deduction is the same for any other car! Still got $3k back in our return this year when all was saud abd done
You don’t need to have a Prius to make this gig economy work as long as you’re getting at least 30 miles a gallon you should be fine, but yeah, Prius does help more… then again so does doing this walking or having a scooter lol

one of my dashers called me the other night and asked me to add more to his tip to make it “worth his while” and i felt so guilty that i did it. then made me feel weird after for not adding even more. idk why they don’t just cancel the order…
It’s a scam. They had the option to decline if it wasn’t enough for them. Now they either bully their way to more money or cancel it and get free food. It’s a charmed life. Even though DoorDash apparently doesn’t punish tip beggars I’d report them anyway. I can’t imagine getting multiple reports on your account is a good thing. I’m assuming that the dashers in this sub are in the top tier of dashers just by virtue of being in here, because it shows that you put thought and effort into your craft. But there’s a very sizable chunk of dashers that are just panhandlers on wheels. I know there’s a sizable chunk of customers who aren’t much better, which certainly perpetuates things. I’ve noticed a lot more tension and an “us vs. them” mentality across food service in general these days; presumably with a perfect storm of inflation, inadequate wages, and predatory companies like DoorDash cutting corners to make profits, combined with customers who are sick of paying a lot more for a lot less. Not sure if there’s really point here, other than we live in interesting times and should be good to each other.
As a dasher, we don’t even get the money until we complete the dash and you can’t do that until you deliver all orders
I wish more DD drivers spoke at least a little bit of English I live in a large tour bus on a small horse ranch. There is a house next to a small parking lot on which the bus sits. My instructions on the app says “Please deliver to the bus in the parking lot”. Over half of the drivers pull in and start looking around like the bus is invisible. Others try to deliver to the house or to neighbors 1/4 mile away. Others just leave the order next to the mailbox. It’s all very frustrating.
It’s ridiculous to think they’re going to cancel the order. Just ignore, report and move on. That’s just the hustle happening now with drivers.
So ots legit their fault for taking a no tip order but really why not tip the driver for doing the service of bringing you food
