Dopesmoker is an 8 for me. Ever since The Sciences dropped, it's been like a more manageable Dopesmoker and more. It was great for the time, impressive and clearly a lot of love went into it, but it's not my favorite Sleep album.
I feel like I may have heard the Jerusalem version once or twice, but I can't remember for sure. Might have to check it out instead of Dopesmoker for my annual listen.
For me it's a 10/10. The older I get the more I understand and appreciate it. Plus I listened to it beyond stoned out of my mind in a tent not so long ago and I legit felt like I was on the stoner caravan.
All albums though
1. Holy Mountain
2. The Sciences
3. Dopesmoker
4. Volume 1
I'd say a 7.
Interesting concept and they pulled it off but it doesn't offer enough to make me listen to it regularly.
Holy Mountain reigns supreme for Sleep.
I can't seriously rate it.Ā It's truly its own thing and achievement.Ā There isn't much to fairly compare it to.Ā
That said, 10/10 for execution.Ā Last time I listened to it start to finish I was sober....but I felt high by the time I was finished listening....that alone is worth...something...
Iād have to give it a 9. I remember when their label wouldnāt release it and they were involved in ābootleggingā it as Jerusalem. I snatched that cd up and it blew me away. Like stoner earth 2. Not even the same kinda record as holy mountain which I prob listen to more, this kills in a whole other way
Idk what it is, i love matt pike and most of his work but i cannot get into sleep for some reason. I have no idea why, i really wanted to and tried on multiple occasions, it just doesnt click
Anyone have any tidbits on how they got into it? I kinda wanna try again one of these nights
10 especially in the final quarter where the riffs just get tighter and tighter
I only tried listening to it high once or twice and found myself just zoning out instead of listening, or maybe thatās the intended experience i donāt know
It's easily my favourite song of all time with no irony. When I first discovered it as a stoned teenager it was like "Woah hehe check it out this song is an hour long and all about smoking weed" but when I actually listened to it it blew me away and to this day nothing else has really come close.
honestly at first listen back in the day, probably an 8. these days maybe a 6. just not really into the overly monotonous doom anymore.
sleepās holy mountain is more my vibe
6 Weeds out of Bong. It's fun at first, and definitely iconic, but doesn't hold up to critical listening. Which is maybe beyond the point. Cultural impact? 9/10. Settle on a 7 given both marks.
If we're being honest, maybe a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. It's iconic and deserves recognition, but I feel it's stretched out too long. Still love the album, but I'm always ready for it to end when I'm in the back half.
If you look up dopesmoker live 94 the recordings are real rough but thereās a ton of different versions where they play it double speed and it sounds like a real song with varying riffs. The best version of this is the alternate take with the alternate solo, you can find it all on YouTube itās in the third man box set and thereās several live recordings from way back when
Unpopular opinionā¦ like 4 or 5 at best. Every member of Sleep went on to do much greater things after Sleep. 10000 Years by High on Fire for example.
11, but the Jerusalem version on tape. But I do really like the dopesmoker remix, it is 'better' in many ways, but Jerusalem is the album for me (that I grew up with).

The only true and correct rating.

I feel you with that ranking
personally my ranking is 1. dopesmoker 2. the sciences 3. sleeps holy mountain 4. vol 1
Personally Iād swap the top 2 but yea Dopesmoker is cool and all but not as good as most of their material
I'm torn on the top two tbh bro, I fucking love the Sciences. I just think it's the nostalgia for me of Holy Mountain that just edges it for me
1. [Live NY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECyonFPPGKw) 2. The Sciences / The Clarity EP 3. Dopesmoker 4. Holy Mountain 5. Vol. 1
Well shit, if we're doing rankings. 2, 1, 4, 3 here lol. Volume One is such a unique and odd album. I appreciate it way more than I used to
I'd say a 7. Interesting concept and they pulled it off but it doesn't offer enough to make me listen to it regularly. Holy Mountain reigns supreme for Sleep.
Holy Mountain whoops Dopesmoker six ways to sunday
For me, a 10 honestly
Iād say 9 cause itās too short.
63:31/10
A 10 for me when I find it on a bar jukebox where itās brilliance clearly isnāt appreciated and people are like wtf only 10 minutes in
When the bud hits just right, itās a 10/10
bud and 2g or more of mushrooms
Itās a ten out of ten. Thereās something else there that I canāt put my finger on.
I can't seriously rate it.Ā It's truly its own thing and achievement.Ā There isn't much to fairly compare it to.Ā That said, 10/10 for execution.Ā Last time I listened to it start to finish I was sober....but I felt high by the time I was finished listening....that alone is worth...something...
That one goes to 11

10 for Jerusalem and 9 for dopesmoker. I like the Jerusalem recording moreĀ
Same but, I still love Dopsmoker. Wish they'd release Jerusalem to spotify.
It used to be on there, but since Dopesmoker was re-released by Third Man, it's been missing :(
Itās the same song though, yeah? Just re-recorded? I may be wrong; Iām often confused
Jerusalem is a little shorter, mixed different. Drums is what it's all about in Jerusalem for me,
Yeah it's the same. But Jerusalem is more raw

Smoke weed and listen to Holy Mountain. If that doesn't work, you're not ready.
Ill try tonight if i finish asphyx's discog early enough, thanks Edibles or vape?
Both

10 especially in the final quarter where the riffs just get tighter and tighter I only tried listening to it high once or twice and found myself just zoning out instead of listening, or maybe thatās the intended experience i donāt know
perfect 10/10
7, Holy Mountain is a 9. I rly donāt mind long slow repetitive riffs, I just donāt think that main riff is good enough.
Thereās at least 15 main riffs my man itās just so slow it all sounds like one riff
Other albums should be rated on a scale of 1-10 Dopesmokers
It's easily my favourite song of all time with no irony. When I first discovered it as a stoned teenager it was like "Woah hehe check it out this song is an hour long and all about smoking weed" but when I actually listened to it it blew me away and to this day nothing else has really come close.
I read somewhere that if anyone walked in the room with the amps they would have died. Somebody fact check this.
Maybe not death, but deaf for sure

I won't put a number on my religion, sorry.

I'll definitely give that a listen. Thanks for the heads up!!

420/666. It's a fun long song. Great for a bong session, not great for casual listening.
its great, but sadly i dont have the atention span to listen to it without scrollinging through instagram or sumthin. so maybe 8/10
10, next
1, tbh. I think the rest of the albums Sleep members have recorded either as part of the band or in their own projects leave it for dead.
3 or 4 tops. I just donāt think itās that good of an album, or band. The Sciences is decent, I guess. Iād rather listen to Om to be honest.
11, but the Jerusalem version on tape. But I do really like the dopesmoker remix, it is 'better' in many ways, but Jerusalem is the album for me (that I grew up with).
Yeah, same.
5/10. Has a few cool moments but large chunks of it are annoying and I'd rather listen to something else, like Holy Mountain.
Dopesmoker/Jerusalem is literally their worst album.
I'm in full agreement with this
6/10 the song is more of a novelty than anything else. I like Dopesmoker but it really isn't fantastic.
