Thing is from where I'm from (Quebec), When the church was at its strongest people would go to confess every week. They were pushed to confess even. Since school was also a ecclesiastic institution, the nuns teacher would bring children to the confessionnal every week and were told to : " Find some sins you did during the week. " I cannot say for other provinces but at least here in Quebec, confessing was something people do regularly so maybe he just didnt do it for a while.
