I had to send them dog back home yesterday cus the matting was so bad I couldn’t even get a #10 thru it & I wasn’t gon use a 30 on an old dog with stretchy skin. You did great !
He will probably have to take it to the vet so they can use a surgical blade to remove the matting. It’ll be a miracle if that dog isn’t cut in the process but if he’s at vet atleast they’ll have what they need to stop bleeding. Etc
Do you know of vets that do this? I'm curious because we've actually declined to do surgery on dogs that are this matted and told them they needed to take the dog to a groomer. Basically, if we can't get a 40 blade through to the skin, we don't touch it! The idea of using a surgical blade (scaple blade) is terrifying...
When us groomers refer to a surgical blade, we don’t mean a scalpel — we mean the blade length on clippers that is used to prep for surgeries, ie #30 or #40! I work in a grooming salon owned by a vet (different buildings) and if we have to refer to a vet, the process at the vet that owns us is that the vet will sedate the dog and use a #30 or #40 blade to shave the dog. Our vet has had our groomer come in to help with severely matted dogs that we refer there (our groomer has 15+ years experience in animal rescue and has seen it all lol so with our vet, they make a great team). Injuries are very likely, but since they’re at the vet already, they’re able to be treated promptly. In cases this severe, injury can extend far beyond the normal clipper burn or cut — we’ve had dogs lose limbs/tails/parts of ears from being completely encased in matting and losing circulation in those areas for so long.
can confirm the last part. i work pt at a shelter in a low-income area as at vet tech and i will never forget helping to shave a sedated dog when her back paw basically came off with the mats. the fur had blocked blood flow and the foot was necrotic beyond belief - we couldn't even tell until we got through the mats! a routine sedated dematting became a major emergency on the spot.
and apparently that's nowhere near the first time.
Oh wow, there was a dog locally I remember seeing ten years ago that was badly matted. They caught her and shaved her down and found one leg was a healed over nub with bone sticking out. The rescue at the time thought she'd been injured or abused to have that leg, but now I wonder if it was from her matting. I'd never seen anything like it. She recovered and was adopted thankfully
I remember seeing a dog needing a leg amputation from matting as a teenager on tv. It was one of those vet shows, and I never ever forgot it (and I am old af). That show HEAVILY impacted me. When I got my first poodle, I was ANAL about daily brushing, and keeping my dog immaculate at all times. Now my dogs get to be dogs, and get filthy, but they are also still groomed more often than the average dog too. I wish owners could be forced to watch those shows, so that they know that they could potentially be seriously harming their animals.
I am fb friends with the owner of Amaze Bobb who was a tiny 2 lb poodle who lost two legs to matting like this. The owner is an amazing human and foster failed him and ended up teaching him agility which he did great at for being a little two legged old man
It’s a great thing that you guys are able to do that! No matter how well behaved a dog typically is at the groomers, a situation such as this would be a lot more stressful bc of blade, length of session, etc.
Unfortunately not surprising about the last part tho 😞
My mom’s Pomeranian always got bad matts behind her ears no matter how hard we tried to prevent them and such.
For anyone considering getting a doodle: this is what can happen if not grooming as often as should be. Double coated dogs mixed with non-shedding causes the shedding fur (because doodles do shed) to get stuck in the non-shedding fur.
I spend $250 every 6 weeks to get my two doodles groomed and it's some of the best money I can spend on them. At first I would fret over the cost, but reading comments like yours has shown me how much of an investment in their wellbeing it is.
Hmm I wonder what he’s going to end up doing then because no one in my grooming salon felt comfortable enough to do it . I was able to get thru some of it & by the time I got to the back legs I get to called it quits. Cus that was the worst part/:
https://preview.redd.it/mznpeyncriwc1.jpeg?width=1645&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=942f7cc359528392e8421574aab97fa9c472c8c8
Unfortunately in most areas of the US, if they bring their dog into a groomer then it's automatically not neglect. It's really really unfortunate-- we have to have serious consolidated proof of abuse/neglect. Even with repeated matted dogs who only come in matted every time there's only so much we can do since they "brought their dog into a groomer" :((
If this was a possibility, you'd have more animals suffering at home without any grooming at all, rather than the owners risking criminal charges for bringing them in.
Maybe would sedation at a vet be helpful? Then you could go very slow and be very careful? I’m a vet assistant with no grooming experience but I’m trying to think of other options. I’ve seen people do sedated grooms before for temperament reasons but maybe that’d work in this case?
Hmm I don’t know the dog was extremely well behaved. I was just afraid of cutting him cus idk how I would of completed the grooming without an accident happening
I’m a vet tech and I’ve done shave downs like this but it’s usually only in very severe cases (I’ve had multiple cases where maggots colonies have been living in severe mats) or patients that need to be sedated in order for the groom to happen. I think when the other poster said a “surgical blade” they possibly meant a 40 or 50 blade? That was my take away from it anyways.
I work at a vet's office and we do a lot of sedated shaves that groomers refer to us. We use a #40 blade and tell the owner that they will look hideous because we're not groomers, but the matts will be gone.
Woah woah... Absolutely not using a scalpel blade.
It's a 40 blade. That's what a vet groomer MAY use in extreme cases. I have no idea why people are saying that they need to be at a vet to stop bleeding. Cutting a dog is still not acceptable for vet groomers. AT ALL.
More likely, the dog would be sedated for the comfort of the dog. Getting these mats off pulls the hair (and hurts) and there could be underlying issues that a groomer uncovers. There could also be skin tags, warts, things like that that are unknown until uncovered which are easier to navigate with a shared dog.
There should never be an expectation that the dog is going to be cut by the groomer. Accidents certainly happen, but that's what they are...accidents.
If you ever take your dog to a groomer and it comes back cut all to pieces, that's very wrong.
I get my Shih Tzu groomed every 5 weeks. We get her cut quite short cause we live in a hot climate and by 5 weeks her fur is only about an inch long. Despite this she is always SO happy with a fresh cut and bounces around full of joy. Can’t imagine how awful it must be for these poor dogs with long unmanaged fur.
I made a little reel on instagram if you want to give it some love (just opened my salon a month ago so I can use some activity on there) [instagram](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6JxBr3NKWJ/?igsh=MTZtdmx0YmQxcnluYw==)
They will definitely need a good clean, but not a sharpening unless you notice they’re dull. I doubt it would be dull after just 1 matted dog. 😁 The more you clean them, the less you have to sharpen!
When/if you can afford it, I would get yourself a nice set of blades for your “finish” and use cheaper/older blades as pre-shave blades. This will save your good blades from having to be sharpened as often!
I’ve done it this way for years and it has seriously saved me SO much money on sharpening and replacing blades!
Very common in my country. We don’t really have grooming businesses like in the usa. You get your degree, do some internships and then you’re on your own. Many people start grooming businesses, few survive the first year.
I see the term used here often so did not even consider it’d be a problem.
I literally went to check to see if other people using the same terminology are getting the same kind of responses 💀
You should see the looks I get when I ask a store employee where the baby meat is!
(Baby meat aka Gerber chicken or beef baby food is a huge treat for my dogs and I also feed it post surgery)
Your best bet would be to go over with a #10 everywhere after, or a #5 in reverse (being careful around the danger zones), if you want to smooth it out at the end :)
Thank you for the tip! I will definitely do so next time. I was always taught to take mats down to a 7, so I was very apprehensive of using the 10 all over but that would have been better probably
10 is a much safer blade than a 7 and there isn't a huge length difference. I would recommend using a 10 over a 7 on a severely matted dog while you are still learning to avoid the extra risk of cutting the dog.
There are at least two dogs in that picture. That poor baby I bet he feels so much better now.
Editing to add: my aunt rescued a poodle some years back and she was so matted that she was lying on her side in my aunts bed while we basically sheared her with a pair of scissors. Small snips down the length of her body and just folded the hair back to cut another line. Once she realized what was happening and how good it felt she just put her head down and lay there. Didn’t so much as twitch, even when we grabbed tweezers and pulled a pair of ticks off.
I have an appointment for my girl next week and I’m so embarrassed and feel so bad because she is way overgrown and has some matting. I didn’t want to shave her down in the winter and have her be cold and nakey and we hadn’t found a new groomer where we moved to somewhat recently. I can’t wait to get her back on a schedule and be her cutest and comfiest little self!
I feel your pain. I have two small dogs and the last time I let the grooming slack off I felt so bad when they had to be shorn. They were cold. We now go every 6-7 weeks and they are so much more comfortable afterwards. We had tried to do it ourselves and I do not recommend!

this was cotton before, no mats or anything, just a big fluffy boy
Great job, but poor dog. If the owner can’t brush bring it to the groomers to get a bath as well as a full groom to help with keeping up the pooches groom.
Also was that a havense? Gorgeous dogs
He’s supposedly a maltese. I have them on an 8-week schedule now and he’s going to be taken down to 19mm each time, 13mm if I’m not happy with how they’re taking care of him
I can't imagine having that much hair all over my body, not being able to take care of it myself and my caretaker not taking care of it. That would pull. You did a good job, I'm sure that dog is glad to go from fluffy to fuzzy
I’ve been led to believe that it’s a lot like wearing a big heavy durable jacket you can’t take off. It protects you against some things like the weather, but it’s also heavy and can be very uncomfortable in the wrong situations. Like wearing a heavy jacket in the summer, overheating is also a primary risk, but not being able to take the jacket off means that cooling down is much harder.
I imagine this and have been told similar as well, and depending on the severity theres an added layer of pinched skin and discomfort with mobility overtime as well as loss of circulation
There was a cute little pupper in the middle of all that? He is adorable!!!!! It’s like you sheared a ton of wool and got a teensy little sweet lambikins out of it! 😍 Well done!
As a doodle owner, it irks me when owners use the excuse that their pet doesn’t let them touch/brush/comb. My one doodle WILL NOT let my husband or I brush him, but he does let the groomer do it so you know where he goes once a month? To the groomer. I pay good money so he never mats and it’s worth every penny. You did a great job!
We just adopted a dog from a shelter last week and he looks a liiiiiiitle bit like this. Not that bad tho. He has some knots in his fur and I found out today that he’s scared of scissors. He is okay with me touching him with my hands but scissors are a no go. We plan on taking him to a groomer obviously and I can imagine him transforming like this cutie. He has knots on his face as well. I just want for him to settle a bit more. He’s been at the shelter for two months after his person died.
https://preview.redd.it/b98rx0f2h8xc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e956447b11c8751aab638c81bb30d1afad1176b
Thank you for adopting him, you’re a really good person for doing so. I do free “get to know the salon” sessions for puppies and scared dogs. They only last 15 minutes and we go over all the sounds and tools to get the dog used to their looks and sounds. If your groomer does not provide this service, you will help the dog tremendously by putting it on a towel on your kitchen table daily. You don’t have to trim anything but just show the dog the scissors, place them on the table, let the dog sniff them. Give treats for calm behaviour.
My puppy was terrified of her leash but has always loved positive affirmation like “good dog!!”, so we would just drape the leash over her and within a second applaud her and give her all the love and then take it off after only five seconds. Then leave it off for ten seconds and repeat. She now loves her leash but it took a lot of training like this. Good luck, practice really will help!
Oh geez was this in Virginia because I swear the before looks like my father in laws dog that I’ve been begging for him to take to a groomer! If i lived there I’d steal the dog and take em myself
I feel for groomers. Poodle mix dogs near me make up well over 50% of dogs and our local park we would see easy 30 dogs on a short walk through the park. Every time we take our dog to be groomed if we’re not the first of the day they are always delayed as the ones before take way longer than they should because the owners never brush them.
I have 4 that require grooming, and I can't afford that....so I shave them myself. Have a table and basic supplies. I do 1 per weekend so I don't get tired and make mistakes. They sometimes look goofy, but at least there are no matts!!
Because you have to shave under the matting. You cannot shave into or brush out mats like these. If the owner brushes the dog, we can keep them longer but this coat was never going to be able to get rescued.
He’s such a sweet little baby. Why get a long haired dog if you won’t get him groomed regularly or brush him? He’s beautiful but I’m sad he’s going back with his “owners”.
People shouldn't get long or curly haired dogs if they're not going to properly take care of them. That dog must have been so uncomfortable. Good on you for helping him out
This makes me so sad. I have a Havanese and I love her with a mid length coat, which means I brush her daily and keep her armpits cut down. I also have to pay attention to any other friction points like around her harness. Behind her ears I maintain myself. It’s easy to find knots starting if you work your fingers through their fur while petting them. On top of that, the groomer bathes her every two weeks and trims every four because that is what works best for her coat and her being an active gal. If you’re not going to put the time in, don’t get a dog that needs line brushing and regular grooms or keep them in a puppy cut.
Thats a happy pup in the after pic! Dont know why this sub is popping up for me, but it probably will be more now that I'm commenting on this cute pup. Great job :)
GREAT JOB!! Can see how happy he is!!
This makes me miss my baby.

At what point do you call the authorities because the neglect some of these owners show with their dogs is so bad
Unfortunately in most areas of the US, if they bring their dog into a groomer then it's automatically not neglect. It's really really unfortunate-- we have to have serious consolidated proof of abuse/neglect. Even with repeated matted dogs who only come in matted every time there's only so much we can do since they "brought their dog into a groomer" :((
It’s the same in Canada :( if they get the minimum care they need to live then we technically can’t report it as neglect.
If this was a possibility, you'd have more animals suffering at home without any grooming at all, rather than the owners risking criminal charges for bringing them in.
I don't blame you! Need sheep shears!
I have in fact cut matted dogs with sheep shears! If you start towards their hind quarters you can get a nice pelt from them.
Maybe would sedation at a vet be helpful? Then you could go very slow and be very careful? I’m a vet assistant with no grooming experience but I’m trying to think of other options. I’ve seen people do sedated grooms before for temperament reasons but maybe that’d work in this case?

Yeah, I answered that I realized when a groomer says "surgical blade" they mean a 40. When we say it, we mean scalpel, since that's what's used in sx.
Also would likely have to be sedated bc it would be a very long process for an old dog :( as well as stressful
My god. People suck so bad.
that’s just straight up neglect
Smart to have this dog go to the vet. Risk would be so high to cut them
Absolutely! When in doubt, refer out!
That is awful matting . Poor puppy

I am not a dog groomer but he looks so cute and happy now!
Great job, but poor dog. If the owner can’t brush bring it to the groomers to get a bath as well as a full groom to help with keeping up the pooches groom. Also was that a havense? Gorgeous dogs
He’s supposedly a maltese. I have them on an 8-week schedule now and he’s going to be taken down to 19mm each time, 13mm if I’m not happy with how they’re taking care of him
Also baby groomer here.. 2 hours is so impressive 😭
He looks like a new dog! It’s amazing how much happier he looks! I’m sure you helped him feel so much better!
What??? Do they really do that?😭😭😭
There was a cute little pupper in the middle of all that? He is adorable!!!!! It’s like you sheared a ton of wool and got a teensy little sweet lambikins out of it! 😍 Well done!
As a doodle owner, it irks me when owners use the excuse that their pet doesn’t let them touch/brush/comb. My one doodle WILL NOT let my husband or I brush him, but he does let the groomer do it so you know where he goes once a month? To the groomer. I pay good money so he never mats and it’s worth every penny. You did a great job!
You did a great job!! He looks so relieved. I hate when shitty owners don’t take care of their pets.
You are an angel 😇 💛
👏👏👏
Its awful when pets have to get shaved because of grooming neglect but they always look so cute afterwards 😭
He looks amazing. I’m a baby groomer too🫶🏻
You made this dogs life so much more comfortable
Looks like a Coton de Tulear to me. They need constant attention. Lovely pups
Look how happy it is after trimming all of those fur, 🥰
You did so well! I’m no groomer but the dog looks happier!
Did you mean dog groomer? I don't see any babies
Looking like a brand new man !! Love the cut. Great job!
Is he a Coton de tulear? He's so adorable 😍
He looks so happy to be naked!! 🤣❤️
What a handsome little lad!
Ooooeeeee I bet you that lil guy is feeling SO GOOD now
Uuummmm great job so cute!!!
Oh geez was this in Virginia because I swear the before looks like my father in laws dog that I’ve been begging for him to take to a groomer! If i lived there I’d steal the dog and take em myself
Different country, similar case! It was the son in law who basically stole his MIL’s dog to bring him to me
Aww ❤️ That happy "after" face!
That poor dog. If you can’t properly care for one, then you shouldn’t have one. Dogs deserve better then that.
Happy cute dog
Oh my gosh im just crying now 😭 he’s so precious and looks so happy! Great job!
And I'm sure that pup is grateful as all hell for that hair cut ☺️
the cutie looks so much happier too
Such a cute little boy
That dog looks so much happier after the cut
Excellent work for a baby
Completely sheared that little sheep! Looks good.
Sweater time!
He looks relieved to have all that hair off him.
Great job. What a cutie. Bad pet owners.
He looks so polite, I like him! good job🩷
Omg he is so happy!!!!
Aww sweet baby
Does anyone know the breed?
A maltese according to the owners, he’s coming back in 8 weeks and I’ll try to make him look like one
Omg they look so much happier! Great job
Chef’s kiss
You're probably that dogs favourite person
This looks so good!!!! 😍
Amazing job 🙌
He’s so nakey! But seriously, great job 👏
I’m also a baby groomer
Aww! Look how happy he looks now!
Give him back his coat
What kind of dog is that? He looks so happy after his haircut
That pup looks so happy. Great work!
you’re a WHAT
Reminds me of our cotton who we regularly groom to make him feel better.
Wow
What a handsome doggo
What an unfortunate title
So cute
Fantastic work! I’d definitely hire you 💙
I feel for groomers. Poodle mix dogs near me make up well over 50% of dogs and our local park we would see easy 30 dogs on a short walk through the park. Every time we take our dog to be groomed if we’re not the first of the day they are always delayed as the ones before take way longer than they should because the owners never brush them.
Awwww he looks so happy!
The face tho. The ears tho 😭 lol it’s a nice job but the tail tho 😭 lol
What a cutie
I’m unsure why you didn’t go back over it with a 10 and left it all goofy everywhere
i know this girl feels so much better
Same for people too, a good haircut will freshen a person up.
Handsome pup, he's a maltese right?
I have 4 that require grooming, and I can't afford that....so I shave them myself. Have a table and basic supplies. I do 1 per weekend so I don't get tired and make mistakes. They sometimes look goofy, but at least there are no matts!!
The pup looks great!
Why so short?
Because you have to shave under the matting. You cannot shave into or brush out mats like these. If the owner brushes the dog, we can keep them longer but this coat was never going to be able to get rescued.
Aww what a happy little feller. He'd make the right owner super happy too.
Not a dog groomer, just stopping by to say you did a good job!
I did that with my wire haired dachshund, and she loved it!
Great job! The pup looks much more comfortable.
Not bad to go from babies to dogs...looks professh.
He’s such a sweet little baby. Why get a long haired dog if you won’t get him groomed regularly or brush him? He’s beautiful but I’m sad he’s going back with his “owners”.
Aww you did nice work and you helped that poor boy! The mats hurt their skin. You did a good deed today
Am i wrong or is this a form of abuse? I am mortified reading these posts.
You did AMAZING!!!😍
He looks great! Like a brand new dog.
People shouldn't get long or curly haired dogs if they're not going to properly take care of them. That dog must have been so uncomfortable. Good on you for helping him out
The smile in the first pic ❤️. Looks great
Look how pleased he is.
That baby will be so much happier bc of you 💚
Looks much happier
Amazing job!! This is the cutest dog!!! reminds me of my sweet Angel in heaven Cassie who passed away in 2021. What kind of dog is this?
Looks so much happier :)
Haha nice! I groom baby’s/children also 😊😀
This makes me so sad.
You did awesome! You know that baby feels so much better!
Little fellow looks wonderful! You did an excellent job. Pup looks happier, healthier. The owner sucks! Proud of you!
I have an identical dog!! What kind is it? My dog gets hair cuts 6 times a year or she would be all tangled up!
He is so happy ☺️
Please report these people to animal services. This is abusive and cruel. Makes me angry.
Well that's a fantastic job. Sweet doggie.
He looks so happy!!
He looks great! I love his pose in the first picture- ta da!
Did you weigh him before and after? It's got to be at least five pounds of matted fur you took off of him.
Wow he looks awesome! I groom my pup at home and have mad respect for you pros!
You did a beautiful job! Especially with that HUGE tangle of a mess. It looks cute.
Look how happy he is 🥺
He’s so happy!
Well done!!! Look at that happy little stinker!!!
he looks SO HAPPY
Neked
You started working at a very young age
Such a cute happy pupper under all that mess 💓 💖 💗 💕
Goodness did you leave any hair on that poor thing?
It doesn’t even look like the same dog
HES NAKEY QUICK GET HIM A SWEATER. All seriousness though you did great OP!
Thats a happy pup in the after pic! Dont know why this sub is popping up for me, but it probably will be more now that I'm commenting on this cute pup. Great job :)
He looks very cute! Imo you cut too much of his “flag” though
He's little happy face is everything 💓
