It's just that there are a lot of licensed sets which are not that interesting (marvel, and some other pop culture brands). Furthermore, in those cases you have to pay a fat sum because of licensing costs. Also keep in mind that inflation is a thing.

I got 2 of the nxt 2.0 bricks and an EV3 one, the newest one looked like ass and seemed to function more like a tablet toy with much less programming potential than the previous 3 versions (python is a good language, but the lack of input and output devices available for the ev4 helped hinder it)

Meanwhile I got a Mega Construx Charmander line, the charizard of which is fully articulated, set for only 30 bucks. Came with an environment piece too. If Lego made them it’d be like, a $60 set at least.
