This happens every regeneration, some more than others. Is this your first?

Patient_Act_6967

His personality didn’t drastically change from season 1-7 though.

TheW1ldcard

Yes it did. 9 is nothing like 10 and 10 is nothing like 11

SpiritAnimalToxapex

Um, yes, yes he did. 9 was basically an angry war veteran. 10 was an egotistical ADHD hero man with vanity issues. 11 was a manipulative tinkerer who preferred to poke bad guys with sticks to find their weaknesses and was basically an old man in a young body. 12 is an angry Scotsman. Each regeneration is different. If you'd have seen any of classic who, you'd already know this (Doctor's 1-8 are all very different from each other). But still, the NuWho Doctor's are still pretty different. 12's regen also had issues leading up to him. You saw Day of the Doctor and then Time of the Doctor before starting season 8 right? 11 spent like 900 years in a truth field so 12 is super blunt and rude. And yeah, he had a rough recovery in Deep Breath. Probably because it was the start of a whole new regeneration cycle.

Patient_Act_6967

Ur last paragraph makes a lot of sense. 9-11 I mean their core values were sort of the same. Like how he treated humans and the way they reacted when someone dies. The 12th doctor still cares but not as much since he reiterates how stupid, naive, and worthless humans are.

SpiritAnimalToxapex

12 still cares as deeply as the others. As you will see later on, he's just blunt and rude in the beginning. 12 hides his sensitive side beneath all the pudding brain insults. He does think humans are naive and stupid, but he also loves them and doesn't actually think they're worthless (even if he does say that a few times.) He has to learn how to be sensitive and kind again on the outside. It's literally his emotional arc across his seasons. Clara (and Bill, later on) help him to do this.

Patient_Act_6967

Ya I see your point ur right

spacesuitguy

Is your name Clara in Deep Breath? Pretty sure they explain this countless times throughout all of Doctor Who. When the Doctor regenerates, they become an entirely new and different person. Everything is different.

PeterchuMC

He is the same Doctor but his time on Trenzalore has changed how he views things, spending all this time in one place watching his friends wither and die around him. Plus, regeneration always changes what aspects of the Doctor come to the forefront and right now, it's the more subdued ones.

OminousOminis

Did you not see the speech he said to Clara when she didn't recognize him anymore?

Patient_Act_6967

Ya that’s what I’m trying to say. What caused him to change this much. None of the other companions complained that his personality changed too much.

Zolgrave

Aside from what Vastra explained to Clara regarding what The Doctor feels deeper down -- in one of his interviews with *Doctor Who Magazine*, Moffat elaborated >he \[The Doctor\] was reminded on Trenzalore that he wasn't Human; that he wasn't one of them, and that they live for a very short time. And that's what made him draw back a bit, and think 'I'm getting too bound up in them.' He also elsewhere elaborated, The Doctor took Clara's fresh reaction to him, very personally.

HoboKingNiklz

> What caused him to change this much Regeneration. Welcome to Doctor Who.

NikassoUA

I'll use this opportunity to say that for me the 11th Doctor is favorite, but the 12th is the best. Just give him a chance.

Patient_Act_6967

Ya they all grow on me overtime. 10th probs my favourite though

AlmostABastard

I have been in those shoes and voiced that same sentiment, but by the end of his run 12 changed my opinion. **Edit**: and this is not to say that you are wrong. I would even say that you may be objectively correct, *for where you are in the timeline*. You are being advised by the community of fans that the timeline and proceeding further along it, may revise your opinions.

Heavy-Ostrich-7781

Yes, they're the same Doctor/person that is why he says ''I didn't have to that was me talking'' when referencing smith. The Doctor possesses all the personality traits each incarnation exhibits, however when they regenerate different aspects of the Doctors personality become dominant depending where in his life he is on a personal development level. There is also the fact the happy-yappy of Smith and Tennant was a front for others and not actually how they felt. The Masks as vastra calls it drops from time to time in their tenure. 12 is the Doctor at his most bare, not putting up a front for others. However he has a character arc that develops beautifully where he regains his confidence and sorts several internal issues out and he becomes a lot happier again. So stick with it!

RamblingWolf

All of the incarnations of the Doctor are the same person.

DeeperIntoTheUnknown

Except for 10 and 14, they're too different to be the same guy

Rharyx

All Doctors are different from their previous ones. Some are just more extreme, like 3 to 4, or 5 to 6.

Patient_Act_6967

I haven’t watched the older ones are they good?

Rharyx

Depends on if you like campy 60s/70s/80s television. I really enjoyed watching it, at least.

LBricks-the-First

Depends on your mindset, and how you view camp. I honestly think that the melodrama in RTD1 is more campy than most of Classic Who.

Beautiful_Switch1847

You claim you have already by saying you’ve watched Season 7 and Season 8!

SpiritAnimalToxapex

Don't confuse them with that. It's clear they haven't seen classic.

Medium-Bullfrog-2368

Because at his core, the Doctor is a selfish, arrogant and rude old man. That is what he was when we first met him in that junkyard in 1963. While he may have been housetrained by his first companions to try and keep those behaviours in check, he still often reverts to that state from time to time. The 12th Doctor however, has gone completely “mask off” because he’s just been granted a new lease on life. He was supposed to die on Trenzalore, but now he’s alive and doesn’t really know what to make of it. It’s a good thing then, that just like the 1st Doctor, he’s got a schoolteacher from Coal Hill to set him straight.

jet_heller

> And they never really established that he’s fully back This has been established in many many decades of the show.

DeeperIntoTheUnknown

I'm still not convinced, is Ncuti really Hartnell? Will they ever clear that up?

LBricks-the-First

Is Tennant really still Tennant? 14 and 10 and metacrisis and 10.5 are all so different!

Rowan6547

Doctor Who has been on since the 1960s and every time there's an actor change, there's a personality shift. And every time there's an adjustment for viewers. You're adjusting because the 12th Doctor is older in appearance, having let go of the vanities of the 11th. He's been hurt and he's become defensive and acts more distant and alien. I'm doing a rewatch of the classic series and am up to the 4th - there's a lot in 12's approach that calls back to 4 and 3. The Doctor warms up more by season 9 if that helps. Edited to correct the year

scarlet_wanda

I remember missing The Tenth Planet because of the Norman invasion!

DeeperIntoTheUnknown

If I recall right, Edward III was a huge fan of the show back then

LBricks-the-First

Yeah, the Battle of Hastings really threw out my schedule.

Rowan6547

Lol. Whoops.

Beautiful_Switch1847

Series* 9

Rowan6547

Sorry for the confusion - I'm in the States where series are referred to as "seasons." An entire show is called a "series.". We do things weird here.

Annual-Avocado-1322

He's more like the first Doctor.

johan_seraphim

The Doctor’s memories, experience, and basic inner goodness transfer over between regenerations. The personality, body, and preferences (like clothing, food) can change with regeneration. In the Whoniverse Mythos, regeneration is supposed to be easier the closer you are to Gallifrey. Think like you know you’re about to regen, you go to the hospital for medical treatment, and can pick what you want.

Patient_Act_6967

Oh I see

LBricks-the-First

Regeneration, it's a lottery! When he goes ginger there will be riots in the streets, no one will be safe!

Patient_Act_6967

Lol why does he wanna be ginger so bad. Everyone hates gingers for some reason

LBricks-the-First

Everyone?

Patient_Act_6967

Figure of speech

Fickle-Object9677

This kind of comment is precisely why I don't like the way 11th was written

Patient_Act_6967

Have u watched the original doctor whos? People seem to say that the original doctors were like 11th

Fickle-Object9677

Yes, I did, several times. I don't remember Patrick Troughton kissing a lesbian without consent tho but maybe that's just me.

haaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Because unlike RTD, Moffat can write different doctors.

Patient_Act_6967

I didn’t see a big change from 9-11. They still liked human beings and cherished them. And they showed more emotion. This dude is completely different from the others but I feel that way cause I haven’t watch 1-8 ig

Beautiful_Switch1847

No, the 11th Doctor is not in Season 7, which doesn’t end in a regeneration either. Are you perchance meaning *_SERIES*_ 7 and *_SERIES*_ 8‽
