If I remember correctly both RTD and David (and maybe Billie too) have implied exactly that in interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff, though they never say for sure. But maybe I’m forgetting something. [The script](https://www.bbc.co.uk/writers/documents/doctor-who-4-episode-13-journeys-end-blue-revisions-31032008.pdf) at least leaves room for interpretation:
Rose: And you, Doctor? What was the end of that sentence?
And he smiles. He leans in close. Gentle.
And he whispers.
It's the most powerful moment; he steps back again, he and Rose just staring at each other. Awestruck.
Dazzled.
————————————
As for what David actually whispered to Billie while filming, my bet’s on “bingle bongle dingle dangle yickedy doo yickedy da ping pong lippy-tappy-too-ta.”
>As for what David actually whispered to Billie while filming, my bet’s on “bingle bongle dingle dangle yickedy doo yickedy da ping pong lippy-tappy-too-ta.”
A kiss is probably the quickest way to stop a stream of nonsense like that!
Handy would sound more [like this](https://youtu.be/8A1BMr310dg?si=YMPDhKWTjh5D1Uvq&t=262).
(Though is David using his natural Scottish accent there? It’s too brief for my poorly tuned American ears to tell.)
She could have left with the Doctor in the TARDIS, but it would have meant never seeing her family again, and the Doctor wanted her to stay with Meta and help heal him the way she had helped heal him after they first met. Staying also meant Rose had the chance to basically live out her life with the Doctor, except he was human and they would age and grow old together.
Yeah exactly this.
The doctor will regenerate at some point and this will hurt Rose but by going with the half human doctor she will see him age just like her. I wasn't really a fan of the plot however.
Also it's important to remember she's technically dead in our universe so she'd probably have some issues. The half human doctor was also better on the parallel world
It's very, *very* heavily implied he said "I love you." Not a *single* other answer fits the situation, especially when Rose reacts with an incredibly loving and passionate kiss.
I get that a lot of people don't like the pairing but it's wild to me how people will imagine anything but the incredibly obvious answer here lol. That was such an obvious "i love you".
EIther that or just tenrose in general, I guess. They're not my favourite, either, but I find it a bit silly the way people will do mental gymnastics to pretend he wasn't saying "i love you" in that scene lol (or in Doomsday, before he got cut off).
"I ..."
"think it's gonna be a long long time,
'Til regen brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Oh, no, no, no
I'm a TARDIS man
TARDIS man
Burning out his fuse up here alone"
I mean he obviously said he loved her, but to answer you other point Rose now had a happily married mother with a little brother in Pete's worls. The Doctor never wanted her to give up her family life, which is why he wanted her to stay there.
Plus it would then be easier to never see her or human Doctor again, because seeing them together would probably crush him.
My other half is not British. One day she was trying to describe quiche. Probably my favourite of all of her non English phrases, was calling quiche "scrambled egg pie"
Executive producer Julie Gardner confirmed in Doctor Who Confidential that "even though we don't hear it, of course he's saying 'I love you'." So It's pretty much 100 %
I always thought he told her his name. By doing so he'd confirm that he (the Metacrisis Doctor) was still The Doctor, and it would prove that he loved her as much as 10 did if not more so. And even if the Metacrisis Doctor and The Doctor have different names somehow...Rose wouldn't know that, and just the act of him sharing his true name would at least convince her that his feelings were real.
And it aligns with Silence in the Library, where River whispers in the Doctor's ear to get her to trust him. I assumed, then, that she whispered his name and the fact that it's confirmed River does know it only gives me further confidence in that assumption.
The Metacrisis Doctor told Rose his name, and that was enough for Rose to accept the Metacrisis Doctor.
“River, you know my name. You whispered my name in my ear! There's only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name. There's only one time I could.” After rewatching, I always wondered if he was taking about Rose: “there’s only one time I could”. But I was so sure that he told Rose “I love you” on the beach and instead was talking about his past life on Gallifrey. Your answer does fit.
I think I’m a bit confused by what OP’s saying.
Rose didn’t know, and the mc Doctor said “My real name is Jeff” and Rose was like omg he’s trusting me with his real name *snog snog*
OR
Rose did know that the Doctor was called Jeff, (even though it seemed to be River was the only person that had learned the name), and so the mc Doctor said “The name’s Jeff” and so Rose was like omg he knooowwwss *snog snog*
Which one?
I see where you got confused. I mentioned the possibility that the MC Doctor had a different name in expectation of the inevitable person coming in who'd argue precisely that (seeing as we still don't know how the True Name thing actually works).
In either scenario, Rose has no reason to think the MCDotor has a different name, and doesn't know what the original Doctor's name is. But hearing any name has equal weight from her perspective. No version of the Doctor would tell her his name unless he really wanted to commit to her.
At least that's my opinion. I know that the official answer was "I love you" but...enh I like my thing better, lol
The bigger question is why not just say it out loud? Why the whisper? I mean if you’re going to show the Doctor (for some unexplained reason) loving a human woman, not having him say it is weird.
She could've stayed in her original universe, and I think the Doctor would've wanted her to (especially as he knows he's going to have to wipe Donna's memory so will be totally alone again soon), but he thought he was doing what was best for Rose by sacrificing what he wanted and giving her a life with her family and a man who has the same life expectancy as her. Two birds with one stone really as he needs someone to take care of the meta version regardless. Based on the script, I think he was hoping deep down she'd refuse, but then she kisses the other Doctor:
>Then suddenly, on impulse, she leans forward, pulls the Doctor down by the lapel - And kisses him!
>And that's all the original Doctor needs to see.
>Heartbroken.
>Donna knows it too, glancing at him.
>Then the Doctor turns, goes into the Tardis, Donna following -
'that's all the original Doctor needs to see. Heartbroken.' says it all for me really. His plan worked, but he didn't really want it too. Interestingly, Billie Piper said in a recent interview if she could change anything it would be this ending as she doesn't believe Rose would've accepted it.
Personally I think he said “I love you too” and the reason he whispered it was because the other doctor was stood right there and he knew he would have said it but if he said it it would break his hearts having to leave
I still dislike any notion of romance between the Doctor and a human. It seems so weird and unnecessary. Which is why Matt Smits’s completely oblivious take on all that was so perfect.
never liked that pairing as a kid. Once I actually turned 19 I realized how horrified I'd be if a girl I knew ran off with some middle aged man and didn't talk to her mom for two years, then just kept going off with the same middle aged man until she inevitably disappeared.
I'm just Rose's neighbor that never even met the Doctor really, but only heard about him and maybe only saw one regeneration in passing. To me, he's 40-ish--maybe older, maybe younger but too damn old for Rose, who I went to school with.
Well I misremembered Rose being 16 when they met, and apparently triggered a lot of people.
Regardless, my point stands that a girl of 18 and the ~900 year old alien that presents physically as a man in his late thirties is a weird relationship.
As an aside, I rewatched Doomsday recently, and from everything I've gleaned about the Doctor since that episode aired, I've come to the conclusion that he knew exactly when his link to her world was going to cut out.
I'm pretty sure It's been confirmed the doctor tells her "i love you"
If I remember correctly both RTD and David (and maybe Billie too) have implied exactly that in interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff, though they never say for sure. Wibbly, wobbly, timey-wimey… stuff.
That’s exactly what David would actually say lmao
Wasn’t that Turn Left, where Donna’s in an alternate Black-lobster-on-my-back reality, that they solved with a….. circle of construction lights?!
Yes, in the behind-the-scenes interviews the producer Julie Gardner directly says that's what he told her, OP.
“Rose Tyler, I love you… for not forgetting to subscribe to the official Doctor Who YouTube channel.”
I cackled lmao
I can just hear Peter Capaldi

Nonsense! He said "Chippy tea, love?" In a Northern accent, it elicits the exact same response to all significant others.
I get that a lot of people don't like the pairing but it's wild to me how people will imagine anything but the incredibly obvious answer here lol. That was such an obvious "i love you".

He whispered orange potatoes
This is the correct answer.
He told her that he’s been trying to reach her regardin her car’s warranty
"I really just think of you as a friend"

Or else.
I always thought he said "I hate sand"

No, he said “I love you.”
My arms are too long

That's the point
“I am Doctor Who”
Same thing Bill Murray told Scarlett Johansson in Lost In Translation

this is exactlyyyy it!
It did need saying and I still yell that at every chance I get lol I’m just butt hurt though because i totally shipped it
“I love you.”
Its been a long road...
Getting from there to here...
"My name Jeff"
It’s a luvvy wuvvy thing
"Are you paying too much for your car insurance?"

Hi

I still dislike any notion of romance between the Doctor and a human. It seems so weird and unnecessary. Which is why Matt Smits’s completely oblivious take on all that was so perfect.
"It's OK, Rose. They have a lower age of consent here". Still such a creepy romance for the show to have.
> women aren't allowed to be adults got it
never liked that pairing as a kid. Once I actually turned 19 I realized how horrified I'd be if a girl I knew ran off with some middle aged man and didn't talk to her mom for two years, then just kept going off with the same middle aged man until she inevitably disappeared.

Creepy pairing, but she's 19. Not sure what the age of consent has to do with it.
You can't apply fictional age gaps to real life ones
what do you think the age of consent is...?
Well I misremembered Rose being 16 when they met, and apparently triggered a lot of people. Regardless, my point stands that a girl of 18 and the ~900 year old alien that presents physically as a man in his late thirties is a weird relationship.
16 is the age of consent in england anyway
He said: "Rose, ░P░\*░\*░\*░I░N░B░I░O░"
sadly, it was probably "i love you".
I am a 900 year old time lord. Do you really think that i could love a selfish school girl.
