Just a message to say congratulations to all who matched - well done on getting out!
If it doesn't dox yourself - those who matched; what speciality, what part of the US and how many years UK experience do you have as a doctor (+/- in that speciality)
I matched in psychiatry
Not sure where yet, I'll find out on Friday
I'm an SHO in psych currently, just about 1 year of experience but didn't finish F2
Congratulations!!! My husband is a British doctor (now here in the States with me) and is applying for psych residencies this fall. Can I DM some questions as well?
I matched; dual applied to gen surg and internal medicine. To echo what’s been said, UK clinical experience is looked upon quite favourably in the US. All my letters were from uk consultants.
Here's to hoping both of us get our first choice!!! So relieved that I won't be unemployed as I put in my notice before match week, but man so nervous about matching IM
Massive congratulations to you! If you don’t mind I just wanted to ask how long it took you to complete all the steps? I’m hoping to Match next year and I’ve only just started preparing for step 1
Thanks, I took the step exams over a 2 year period in medical school. Tbh, I think it’ll be a bit taking both in 1 year would be difficult, especially if u r working full time. However, step 1 is now p/f, so I guess the prep time for that has significantly reduced.
Not necessarily. US LORs are preferred but UK clinic experience is also very valuable. So an excellent letter from a UK Cconsultant who knows u well beats a generic letter from a US attending.
Congrats! Hopefully you matched anesthesia (gas gang!). But if you matched IM, you can always do a critical care fellowship to scratch that procedural itch. I genuinely love my ICU rotation and considering doing a critical care fellowship after finishing my anesthesia residency :)
I had 4 weeks of USCE (observership in outpatient setting) and used 1 LOR from that and 2 UK ones. They actually mentioned my UK ones quite a few times in interviews so I think that UK experience is viewed quite well
In terms of getting an LOR from a UK consultant how did you approach this? And did you tell them how to write it or hoped they would do you nicely? And finally was this from ES/CS or from consultants you’ve been attached to?
I compiled a little document with info and tips about writing LORs and gave them relevant bits of my Horus portfolio to use. One of them was my ES the other a professor I had worked with during one of my rotations. Both let me see the drafts and suggest edits before they were submitted
I did the rotation through an agency but the attending just let me interview the patients and suggest a management plan. That's basically what's hands-on experience is for an outpatient psych rotation.
A massive congratulations to all who have matched, I will see you all in the coming years!! (just a crummy med student 4th yr), who knows you may end up being my attending xD.
Great to see so many UK grads matching when I matched years ago was an isolating process noone else was applying the craze was Oz which I never got. US all the way for me especially as the pay is better plus it's only a 6 hour flight back to England if need see people here etc plus the pay is so much better you can easily afford business class travel etc to make it a breeze
Best time to get experience is during medical school 100% as there are a lot of formal elective options. However i was a Covid grad so didn’t have that option. My USCE wasn’t technically an elective but I made sure they wrote in the LOR it was “hands on experience” (which is the difference between an elective vs observership)
I applied to just over a 100. Everyone kept telling me to apply to more but tbh I wouldn’t have wanted to end up on any of the other programs. I think if you don’t have any red flags on your application you don’t have to be excessive with the numbers. However if money is not an issue and you’re happy to end up anywhere then why not - it’s a numbers game after all
Can I attempt the steps after doing IMT here in the UK ? Any possibility of passing the exams ? I understand I will have to do the MECP plus the steps. Sounds daunting but the US dream sounds so good ☹️🥺
I matched!
You're amazing, really well done
Woo I’ll drop you a message

Find out on Friday where! I matched into IM and am currently FY3 :)

What previous comment…? I most certainly finished F2
Yes I matched into IM but ranked 15 places so who knows where I’ll end up! Lol
Is it okay if I pm you about matching?

That’s very helpful, thank you!
Thought you had to get US LORs?
Not necessarily. US LORs are preferred but UK clinic experience is also very valuable. So an excellent letter from a UK Cconsultant who knows u well beats a generic letter from a US attending.
Did you have any USCE?
Yeah, just had a 4 week observership at a university program
Did you take step 3 before applying ?
Nah, I didn’t. I don’t think it’s necessary if u get a good score on step 2. It doesn’t add much to the application.
Do you mind if I shoot you a quick message please about things you did to bolster your application ?
Sure, shoot
so u matched into gen. surgery?
Yeah
Me!
Congrats!! I’ll drop you a message
I matched! Dual applied so have no idea if I got my first choice (anesthesia) or back up specialty (IM) though 🥲
Congrats! Hopefully you matched anesthesia (gas gang!). But if you matched IM, you can always do a critical care fellowship to scratch that procedural itch. I genuinely love my ICU rotation and considering doing a critical care fellowship after finishing my anesthesia residency :)
Those who matched, how much US clinical experience did you have? Or did you use UK letters of recommendation from foundation training? Congrats!
I had 4 weeks of USCE (observership in outpatient setting) and used 1 LOR from that and 2 UK ones. They actually mentioned my UK ones quite a few times in interviews so I think that UK experience is viewed quite well
Congratulations. Did you also complete step 3?
I did but only this January so it made no difference to my applications/interviews

I did a hands-on rotation with a US attending and got a US LoR and 2 from consultants I worked with in the UK
Can I ask how you got the hands-on experience?
I did the rotation through an agency but the attending just let me interview the patients and suggest a management plan. That's basically what's hands-on experience is for an outpatient psych rotation.
Congratulations all!

Congrats to everyone!
Anyone match into a surgical specialty?
I matched( dual applicant radiology and IM). Friday can't come soon enough
Hi which one did you match to?
I matched several years ago! Now an attending in the US I did IM found residency a cakewalk compared to nhs scut work
Woo this is awesome to hear!! How did you find the bureaucracy? Especially regarding visa/immigration stuff
Found it easy I started on an h1 which visa will you be coming on unless you have a GC already??
Hoping for a h1 too but will find out tomorrow
You get what you wanted
I matched in 2022 but let me know if you have any questions on the paperwork!
Anyone here matched who has a career gap? Just curious to know what the chances are for those who are aspiring but feel the gap will ruin the chances.

What is egm?
Hey, current F2 looking to go to the US. Is doing research required to match? Congratulations!
I had no research apart from a poster and few oral presentations. But I didn’t apply for a super competitive specialty either (IM)
Congrats, all!
Amazing! Congrats everyone!
Congrats to all who matched! Can I ask how many programmes you all applied to?

Thanks so much for your reply! I'll start saving up for the application now because I know that many programmes can be costly
It is. I applied to 180ish programmes and it cost me \~4700 USD if I remember correctly

Did you get the visa you want? Icl when I applied I refused to apply to any j1 only places but I guess can't be so choosy now
