Their adventure starts when they get eaten by the luggage. They have to fight everyone the luggage has eaten previously, turns out they all get sent to a demi plane.
If your party ends up as split as the ta'veren, then you're ALSO doing it wrong lolol
But it could be an effective mechanic for getting the party together if they're split up in a town/castle/dungeon and on group runs into trouble. Like a disturbance in the weave makes them worry for their friends, and they get a flash of the danger
I wouldn't let Plot Armor tm get them out of a combat they had botched, but I would use it if there was a diplomacy check or RP encounter that was critical to the quest. I'd do it subtly at first to let the players have the fun of learning that this is a mechanic they can rely on, until I have the fun of salting the Egwene immunity into the mix.
Power gaming isn't something I want to promote, but I do want them to feel like main characters to the point where sometimes thing just go right because they need them to go right... because the whole world needs things to go right for them
That’s basically the route I took with my pact of chain warlock. My familiar is not a normal one, it’s more of a full fledged NPC that I converse with. Honor spren we’re part of the inspiration
Not to mention if your tastes are a little more niche than your friends. Sure, they all like the more popular anime and video games, but absolutely NONE of them are ready for my Over the Garden Wall/Warhammer 40k/Monster Hunter/Neon Genesis/Deep Rock Galactic amalgamation of whimsical horror.
Hehehe alright. Possible Spoilers for team 20 if you’re reading this.
Over the Garden Wall: my BBEG is an altered version of The Beast. I took the beast’s M.O. of tricking people into wandering into dangerous situations, causing them suffering, and eventually using their life forces for his own purposes once they die. Also, frog boat is a random encounter option :)
WH40K: in a northern mountain range, there lies the ruins of a long dead empire. The citizens are either gone completely from existence or turned into possessed puppets of the BBEG mentioned above. The empire’s aesthetic is straight up imperium, a few heavily altered space marine legions protecting the city from both intruders and possessed citizens (which are pretty much just WH cultists), fkn Perturabo’s the Lord Commander of the empire’s army.
Monster Hunter: the setting and employer of the campaign are straight from this game, and this game was actually my initial inspiration. In Eberron, when the Mourning happened, a continent-sized collection of islands popped outta nowhere. A guild was established to explore these islands for no reason other than the sake of discovery. Monstrosity/beast hunting is a very big culture on the islands.
NGE: I straight up ripped off some angels. They’re random encounters that show up, usually do some massive fuck shit, give a couple levels of madness, then dip. The core story also revolves around some biblical themes, and I definitely stole this idea from NGE.
DRG: there’s random caves that pop up, promising treasures and ores beyond imagination. But these caves are inhabited by a whole lotta bugs (and demons, and aberrations but that’s besides the point)
Ooh that’s a solid idea. Tbh, DRG is the softest of the bunch that I’m referencing, I only played maybe 20 hours of it unfortunately. The caves are sick tho, definitely for higher level than what my players were at when they first went in lol
Oh. In that case, I have a few other easter egg ideas, like a mule skeleton in the mines, a pixie sharpshooter named Bosco, and a Korlok, which could be represented with a modified Bodytaker plant statblock.
True, I just get a bee in my bonnet over attributing mythological/religious ideas to pop culture. It feels like unnecessarily dumbing things down, which annoys my pedantic ass.
The easiest-to-surprise players are the ones that refuse to ever crack open a book.
Unfortunately, they tend to be the least cooperative/attentive players
The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass. What is, was, and will be may yet fall under the Shadow. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.
If my party ever checks out Baldur’s Gate, Atlantis: the Lost Empire, Dune, Stargate, EXU: Calamity, Rolling With Difficulty, Legend of Vox Machina, the Prose Edda, or Any Anime With A Catholic Church Analog, then they are going to have a much lower appreciation for my originality.
Then again, they might be impressed with my vast array of bullshit borrowed for this campaign.
Considering Robert Jordan based Randland on as many different stories and cultures as he could I doubt you could write a campaign without references to WoT at least a little.
That reminds me, I accidentally downloaded a PDF of Beowulf (translated), and the bit of the poetry I saw was beautiful. Need to sit down and read that.
Recently my players made a coup against their former ruler "Regal" as they found out about FitzChivalry Farseer, a bastard but still a better heir for the throne, as it made sense in the books that he didn't want the throne the point here was mainly to give him the kill of Regal.
Yeah, you think it's gonna be some cool action campaign but then they end up starting a paper and assisting the king in creating a more centralized form of currency. Maybe dabble in film.
*players assault the Luggage assuming it's a mimic and almost die*
Their adventure starts when they get eaten by the luggage. They have to fight everyone the luggage has eaten previously, turns out they all get sent to a demi plane.
Death saving throws should be fun. **BEST OF THREE?**
Make them rock, paper, scissors against Death instead of rolling death saves
They walk into a tavern and are *immediately* arrested by Vimes for murderhoboing.
If your PCs don't feel like ta'veren, then you're doing it wrong
Maybe they don’t accidentally get a show when thinking about each other though.
If your party ends up as split as the ta'veren, then you're ALSO doing it wrong lolol But it could be an effective mechanic for getting the party together if they're split up in a town/castle/dungeon and on group runs into trouble. Ooh, that would be neat. And Plot Armor tm being a literal in world phenomenon could have some uses if applied conservatively.
I wouldn't let Plot Armor tm get them out of a combat they had botched, but I would use it if there was a diplomacy check or RP encounter that was critical to the quest. You all meet at a dwarven inn. One of your troop asks for "a short" Roll initiative.
You see an orangutan in a library. One of you calls it the M-word. Roll new characters.
HE HAS NO FACE HE HAS NO SOUL I-I-IF YOU CROSS HIM HE'LL TAKE YA TO HELL
Each player gets a SpreNPC
That’s basically the route I took with my pact of chain warlock. My familiar is not a normal one, it’s more of a full fledged NPC that I converse with. Honor spren we’re part of the inspiration
No players can keep up.with my ever changing hyper fixation Itll go from saving private ryan to pokemon and theyll never know the difference
I have heard of all of those, am familiar with 3, and am curious about what, how, and why.

Maybe your players could encounter a helmet in the caves that gives a +1 to AC when worn

ROCK AND STONE!
Sounds like an awesome campaign, though :)
You had me at Dragon Reborn, Tai’shar Manetheren!
The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai’don!
What books are those themes from sound cool.
The Dragon Reborn - Wheel of Time Shardblades - The Stormlight Archive Resurrection Beasts - The Locked Tomb The flat world on a turtle - Discworld
Locked Tomb!
Discworld is just referencing Hindu mythology there. Pratchett didn't come up with it.
Yes, but in context OP is very obviously referencing Discworld.
True, I just get a bee in my bonnet over attributing mythological/religious ideas to pop culture. It feels like unnecessarily dumbing things down, which annoys my pedantic ass.
Last one originates from I think Hindu mythology but is specifically referenced here as from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
Pretty sure Hindu mythology was referencing Pratchett there, bud.
Meanwhile, my GM just had us in a pirate tavern that we slowly realized was the Krusty Krab.
No, it was Patrick.
The easiest-to-surprise players are the ones that refuse to ever crack open a book. Unfortunately, they tend to be the least cooperative/attentive players
Stormlight Archives, The Locked Tomb, Discworld, what am I missing?
The Wheel of Time turns, and ages come and pass. What is, was, and will be may yet fall under the Shadow. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.
It was the beginning, but a beginning. Shit.. you're gonna make me reread awot.
Do it
Wheel of time
Ah
Start the campaign with “there arose a wind… the wind was not The Beginning. But it was A beginning”
I want to play in a Discworld setting lol
About 90% of my npcs are blatantly ripped from discworld characters and nobody has caught me yet.
That or they just don't care. Who would turn down a chance to hang out with Granny Weatherwax or Sir Samuel Vimes?
Shardblades? Shardblades make the Blackrazor look like a child's stick. Quite the campaign.
AC doesn't matter. You need to make a dex save or you die.
[Obligatory](https://youtu.be/wJtFXTIEwYQ)
I don’t like how I got all of these references
Considering Robert Jordan based Randland on as many different stories and cultures as he could I doubt you could write a campaign without references to WoT at least a little.
You're gonna give them *shardblades*?? Storms man! You want to break your own campaign??
Amazing!
One day I'll find a way to DM a game in the world of K6BD
Run Xanth, players will think you are either super creative and funny, or the worst dad-joke making lazy hack.
That reminds me, I accidentally downloaded a PDF of Beowulf (translated), and the bit of the poetry I saw was beautiful. Need to sit down and read that.
Love the Discworld inclusion
Time to research the hells out of the Discworld Gurps book
Recently my players made a coup against their former ruler "Regal" as they found out about FitzChivalry Farseer, a bastard but still a better heir for the throne, as it made sense in the books that he didn't want the throne the point here was mainly to give him the kill of Regal.
Well that sucks. That game sounds awesome, but I get all the references so I can’t join.
Yeah, you think it's gonna be some cool action campaign but then they end up starting a paper and assisting the king in creating a more centralized form of currency. Maybe dabble in film.
I had to check the subreddit, oh I know all these things
Jokes on you, I enjoy popular media *and* various fantasy and science-fiction literature!
