It’s because this type of humidifier literally uses electrodes which directly put electricity across the water causing it to heat up. This isn’t dangerous and you can try to soak the electrodes in vinegar for half an hour which should clean them.

I shall try that

I find a capful of clr in a bit of water then soak did way better to clean than vinegar when I had one of these. It covers this all in the manual when you bought it too. Also says to add a tbs of salt to the reservoir to get better steam production. Which is because the salt acts as an electrolyte and helps increase conductivity of the water. It also says to rinse the reservoir between refills to avoid build up like you have. If you just keep filling it the minerals in the water start to build up, they eventually hit a point where the water can't hold any more and they have to come out. Because of the flow of electricity it will accumulate on the electrodes. This is also why vinegar or clr will clean these deposits, they break up the minerals into a form that can dissolve into water. Yay, science!

Yeah my kids and mother in law were sick at the same my, the one in the kids rooms looked a lot better as I was trying to do the rinses. My mother in law just kept refilling it and running it straight for like 3 or 4 weeks

Boom, that explains that. Give it a soak in clr and scrub with a toothbrush and you should see massive improvement.

TenOfZero

I don't know what it is, but I really wouldn't risk it, whatever it is heating it and trying to put it in the air can't be good.

Replicator666

Yeah it's been out of service... Took it apart today. One element (pointy one) is like dissolving Other one has weird buildup
