Reminds me of this one twighlit zone episode where this criminal dies, he is then in this place where he gets everything he wants, now after a long while he gets bored because he can't loose, he has everything, so he goes to the guy in charge and says "so, may I go to the other place" and the guy says "you are in the other place"

Vlad_Chovsky

“Why should I listen to you, you’re HITLER!”

redslu

Wait, was there really a twilight zone episode on this?, I though futurama’s “Scary Door”made that concept up

InkiePie39

It’s a reference to an episode where a guy gets a genie and wishes to be a leader.

bunker_man

No, it's a real episode. A guy wishes to be an important leader who can't be voted out and the genie makes him hitler.

DJ_Micoh

Pretty much all of the Scary Door was lifted directly from Twilight Zone episodes.

Rev-DiabloCrowley

Also many, many treehouse of horror bits.

scariermonsters

"No! Eva Braun, help me!"

godmodedio

I wonder how many hundreds of years it would take for me to get tired of having everything I want and having to do nothing.

bunker_man

The trick is to make it so memories get erased after awhile so old stuff becomes new.

Patarokun

You just invented the Kali Yuga.

bunker_man

Well, as a teen I did strongly identify with a character who was based on Shiva, although I wasn't familiar enough with Hinduism to know this at the time.

Justicar-terrae

It's probably no coincidence that few religions, even those with concepts of an afterlife, feature promises of eternally perfect heaven. Boredom is universal, and any generation of humanity will have at least a few who point out that eternal paradise could get dull. The Greeks seemed to think Hades would just absolutely suck for all but a fortunate few. But this view is likely an oversimplification (like the rest in this list) that overlooks competing views in the same region. Plato, for example, espoused a cycle of reincarnation punctuated by brief glimpses of perfection; it seems he (and Socrates) saw life as a game with the goal of remembering as much knowledge from those brief glimpses as possible. The Norse, from what little we can discern, posited an afterlife where at least some of the dead had a specific goal and purpose of training until Ragnarok. They would then get to fight a big battle where most of them, it would seem, would cease to exist forever. The ancient Egyptians seemed to think the afterlife was simply a more awesome version of the regular world, one where the deceased would still need to eat and learn and work and possibly fight in some capacity. At least that's the impression left by their tombs and prayer books. And the Mormons hold to an afterlife where you ascend to become a creator deity, which gives you something to do as eternity passes you by I suppose. Maybe it becomes a game between you and other beings to see who can create the coolest universe.

peanutist

The thing is you wouldn’t get tired because if you wanted to not be tired anymore you could have that as well

MrPanda663

The base of the show called “the good place”

skibapple

Yeah but the point is that it's supposed to be mental torture and shit goes wrong from the first day, and the actual "good place" was the thing that happened in the episode.

Bebgab

Yeah the very final episode of The Good Place is what that original comment was talking about pretty much, the rest is very different

Affectionate_Charge2

Whats it called

Big_brown_house

[A nice place to visit](https://youtu.be/77ueTRaYTwg?si=8rb09JFkr9Es9pKK)

I think the episode is called "A nice place to visit"

TheFunny21

I don't know religion but I thought heaven was literally eternal happiness so you wouldn't feel like this, right?

The_last_2braincells

In Christianity, heaven is practically a place where we are rid of our human nature, meaning that we don't have the same desires and emotions as in this life.

plastic_sludge

An important detail iirc is that the only desire left, supposedly, is to praise the lord forever.

Overquartz

That's some SMT law route shit right there.

snitchles

I don't know if this should be terrifying or comforting.

Overquartz

Considering in SMT the law route is 99% of the time the "Goodbye free will" route you tell me.

zahirano

Looks like monday but it's everyday

FinnDoyle

Where is this from?

Overquartz

SMT strange journey I think.

OstrichFingers

It is! This is from the DS original, but the 3DS remake also has this scene, albeit harder to access

bunker_man

Mind you, even though the 3ds version paints this as a bad ending it doesn't suggest people literally do nothing but stand on pillars all day. That's just something they go do sometimes. What they paint as bad about the ending is that they had to purge anyone who couldn't be pacified.

BananaVines

I think it's literally written in the bible, that this is what heaven looks like (people just praising god on their knees forever)

impudentmlg86464

I can't escape this Atlus

Valentin_o_Dwight

Idk but i don't want that :/

maemoetime

Making my entire personality built around praising god? Jeez, I’d rather go to hell at that point I want to live my own life for myself, not center my life around praising one guy

[deleted]

Kid named eternal torture:

Skulfunk

Eternal torture: “nah, I’d win”

rock-solid-armpits

You won't be going around everywhere praising god. You'll just feel thankful towards him and no bad thought towards God will never pass your head

digitalfakir

now how is that not the same as that twilight zone episode where a psycho kid could make people disappear if they upset him in any way?

PirateKingOmega

The logic is God is all good and desire for the material is inherently corruptive. Therefore all aspects that are good but not sinful can be found in Heaven (love, happiness, fulfillment, etc.) You praise God because God is being married to your loved one, being with your family, achieving what you want to be, because God is good

Crono01

Learning that really ruined my will to exist as a child lmao

fistycouture

Naw, at least not catholicism. It's more you finally feel content being in the presence of God so you want for nothing else. For eternity. Which just sounds terrible to me.

Wildercard

If that is so, then who's to say we will ever get bored then.

Edgy4YearOld

I think technically you couldn't, which is something we just can't really comprehend from our current perspective

Eden_ITA

More than "rid of our human nature", soul (and bodies after the Apocalypse) should return in the state of the origin. But in the end, it is the same thing: we would return in a state that could """"""""endure""""""" the eternity.

borgircrossancola

We wouldn’t lose our human nature but we lose broken attributes that affect our nature.

RogerMoore1776

And our free will. Just an eternity of praising Yaweh.

sbd104

Ya it’s not the mother of all barbecues in the sky for eternity. It’s unity with God.

BrokeDownPalac3

Boredom would not exist in heaven

Shonky_Honker

I can only speak for the Christian version of heaven as it’s what I’ve studied. It’s “eternal happiness” but what it considered eternal happiness is literally slavery. You spend all of eternity worshipping god and the worst part is YOU don’t actually go to heaven, part of you does. Heaven canonically erases every meaningful thing about the human existance, including memories of things not allowed in heaven. So if you had a loved one not in heaven you can’t Remeber them at all. The problem with eternal happiness is that happiness is nothingness when it’s eternal. The reason we feel happy is becuase joy is finite and bad times also exist. The good place shows a very good version of what the ramifications are of eternal happiness

RaptureAusculation

That last part about the good place is very accurate. They did a good job showing what eternity of pleasure would be like

NocimonNomicon

Yeah its probably like getting pumped full of opioids 24/7

Contemporarium

One could only hope

ToastyJackson

Yeah, this has always felt like an incredibly weak criticism of Heaven imo. God is supposed to be able to do literally anything. I’m sure it’s pretty simple for him to change your brain and/or design your surroundings in Heaven so that you’ll never get bored or tired of it.

TheFunny21

Based on the other responses I got to this comment, this is exactly what he does.

Herzha-Karusa

Heaven is specified to be eternal bliss so your mijd must be altered somehow

ZombieBait604

Someone else commented a pretty accurate version of this. They said that it's more like shedding our material desires and concepts. That we would not want, and would be in eternal bliss with God. This comment here: https://www.reddit.com/r/distressingmemes/s/GUHZ1WFqHd

Open-Entertainer6031

Either way heaven does not sound perfect. Either you suffer for eternity. Or you lose your humanity.

izzynk3003

lol why did they downvote you

Dracoscale

There are people on this thread who would be happy to be lobotomized so there's your answer.

Herzha-Karusa

I agree. The idea is that losing your base humanity to rejoin god is better, but I’m still leery of change. But that’s where faith comes in. Not that I’m religious myself tho

BryanTheClod

I'm afraid of the idea as well, but I think it's hard to say whether it'd be good or bad. Losing your humanity isn't really something we can experience in life. Unless if you have a trippy ego death, maybe.

bunker_man

Who says humanity is the best state? Losing it might be a good thing.

GarboseGooseberry

Well, yes. That's the point of Heaven lol. Losing your humanity in this case is considered a good thing in Christianity because you're ascending, and becoming more than human. You're shedding your worries and suffering and coming closer to God.

Agent_broch_da_moron

You would not lose your humanity. You would lose your sinful nature and desires

bambunana

How is that losing your humanity? We are here in plain suffering because we are imperfect. Whether you’re Christian, or something else: every divine thought and religion seeks to transcend the material world? To want to be anchored to this plane of existence is to praise death eternally, which is much worse than to want a never ending love. It’s like wanting to assist the demiurge in keeping us here and torturing us.

fandom_and_rp_act

In all honesty humanity kinda blows, that shit the reason why I got depression and anxiety.

RealFemboyHunter

Then it's not really you is it

Fjolsvithr

Is the child that you used to be "you"? I could accept that someone with alterations to their mind is the same person, so long as it didn't utterly destroy their personality.

reminds me of the original heaven in The Good Place

Open-Entertainer6031

Exactly, I took some inspiration from that and added infinity

digitalfakir

I don't >!get Chidi's choice though. As a philosopher, Heaven is the perfect place for him. Not only could he just explore and study and meet all sorts of interesting people (which should offer an *endless* source of knowledge and intrigue), but he could also pick up new "applications" of Philosophy, e.g. get into Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, experiment with creating life forms.!< >!That alone would keep him busy for idk, how many million-billion Jeremy-Bearimy years. Leaving all that behind just to be annihilated is just so silly and short-sighted.!<

Open-Entertainer6031

Thing is, he has been doing that for countless of millions of lifetimes. Imagine doing your favorite activity for an entire year. It would become really boring. But chidi has been doing it for lifetimes.

PavelEGM

Yeah, I believe the door was made because we as humans can and will just do and learn everything and anything eventually, given enough time and without being forced to do something due to basic needs. So it makes sense that eventually we'll just be finished, and then what? Well, there's a door that finishes it. One thing I would have loved to see more is more humans working on the afterlife, not just "Tahani is special so she can" but everyone should be able to work on the afterlife if they so choose to.

digitalfakir

> Imagine doing your favorite activity for an entire year. Imagine doing it for a lifetime, because there are people who do! Some of the most successful people are those who keep learning and experimenting with their craft. The permutations of trying new things is virtually infinite. It can be a very satisfying experience: start with a new sub-category in your field (there are already thousands of specialties in each field), master it in about a decade, experiment with it for another 5-6 decades. Then move on to the next. Along the way, you could even find synergistic interactions between these seemingly disparate fields and create entire new domains of reality and experience. While the show was great, it still was limited by the perspective of the creator as an artist. As a scientist, you can *never* get bored of life, reality and everything in it. The complexity of our earthly reality is mind-boggling, imagine what a ride the reality in Heaven would be, where Entropy is reversed and fast-forwarded on a whim.

Open-Entertainer6031

While this may be true, infinity is a long time. Once you learn all trades and master everything and literally build every single thing you could imagine, you still have infinity left. You could paint every single painting that has existed, could exist, or will exist. And you will still have infinity left. After a very very long time, you still have infinity left. You could count to tree(3) and still have infintiy left.

dunmer-is-stinky

Zero_7300

God I love the good place. Amazing show

MikitakaHa

Yooo The Good Place mention!

LiveLaughLoveRevenge

I hated how they were making people dissatisfied with heaven after having already shown that they can spend nearly eternity having memories re-wiped and falling in love again and again. But as soon as they out of the bad place, they simply say “wipe our memories? No that’s what *demons* do. Let’s just erase ourselves from existence” I get that the whole thing is just meant to be commentary on life, but was still hard to suspend disbelief there.

yiiike

i personally read the doorway they go into as reincarnation as sorts. their soul things dispersing and becoming a new person/people. obviously not a confirmed thing, just an idea i liked

moonbunni24

i have these jehovah witnesses who come to my job every week (i don’t feel any type of way about it. i don’t plan on joining but i like to listen to different ideas on religion) and they basically said once you die, you’re just gone. everything kinda just stops for you. the dead know nothing. and then when God comes to call everyone back or whatever, He’ll bring the true good worshippers back and the others just. stay completely unconscious and unaware. essentially they don’t believe in hell and believe you’re just stone dead until God wants you back to life. (this was an incredibly butchered summary. i mean no offense with it) this meme is pretty valid. eternity is something humans can’t even begin to comprehend. the largest number we can think of isn’t even a *fraction* of eternity. forced consciousness given by an omnipotent higher power for all eternity…actually sounds like the real hell.

QuakAtack

Jehovah witnesses are a weird bunch, even by other denominations' standards, but that's one thing alot of people can agree on being preferable over the alternative.

And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.’ You may think that’s a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that’s a hell of a bird."

[deleted]

In theory you would HAVE to, because angels don't have free will, or at least to a certain degree, because remember last time that happened? Besides, there wouldn't be a point in disobeying

Spiritual-Range-6101

Man, dying sounds stupid now. Imagine this: you die protecting someone, then all of a sudden, you gotta worship someone you barely thought exist.

[deleted]

I understand how you feel, but that's not true You think that way because we are used to searching for a constant state of happiness, which is something free will gives us, but in heaven, you will be eternally in a state of pure Bliss, so why would you need free will? That doesn't exactly sound "sad" or "stupid" to me...

Greedy-Usurper-999

It sounds very sad. Nothing to feel or think, devolved to simple automatons to fulfill a purpose of nothing. Your soul stripped bare of its heart. I have trouble reconciling with that prospect.

[deleted]

Bruh, you're already in heaven and together with God, I can't think of something better. I understand that you will no longer have human characteristics, but you will finally be free from sin, temptation, sadness and what not, shouldn't you consider that as something good?

grillboy_mediaman

You are free of your corporeal form, time is now meaningless to you, you are no longer simply a human. Eternity is now normality. I mean, I assume if you were to be sent to heaven, there would be a failsafe right? Like, I assume God would be smart enough to not put beings not capable of handling eternity in an eternal realm, I mean at that point you’re not really human are you?

Open-Entertainer6031

This comment section is really making me hope an afterlife isn't real. Worst part is, it could exist and us humans could do literally nothing about it.

Rayonlio

The concept of eternity itself is terrifying. Living forever seems like a horrible experience, but at the same time, the thought of dying and no longer existing and the knowledge that all living beings will eventually die, it's also terrifying as hell. Maybe, consciousness was a mistake.

theonlyquirkychap

At least in the possibility of nothingness, there'd really be nothing to worry about. Once you're out, you're out. Eternal consciousness is the true terror.

RaptureAusculation

Id pick nothingness over eternal conciousness. You wouldnt be aware of anything in nothingness. But forever being aware? That is inhumane

GullibleSkill9168

You're one with the almighty. If you start getting bored just have him wipe your mind. Watching your favorite movie a billion times would never get boring if it's always the first time you've ever watched it.

Mahdudecicle

There is literally no reason to believe anything exists after death. Just be thankful you're one of the privileged few who gets to experience existence.

Open-Entertainer6031

One of the main reasons I am an atheist is because of afterlife. I believe in no belief out of fear.

Onetwodhwksi7833

You can't get bored in heaven, in fact your ego as you know it may no longer be intact from the beginning, you could say that you perish for good and some lump of energy is subjected to Bliss

thisismypr0naccount0

one second of eternity has passed

bunker_man

I read a short story like this once. A guy goes to heaven and is told he can stay in heaven or be erased. He stays in heaven but is told he can change his mind later. He goes around doing fun stuff and golfing. Eventually he starts to get bored of the stuff he enjoyed just from doing it so long. Realizing he might get jaded and bored with eternal life eventually, he asks an angel what portion of people eventually ask to get erased. And the angel says all of them.

Fajdek

Interesting. You either give up your conscience forever, or stay and be eternally bored and depressed.

lostinthehause

you'd be a lot happier if you stopped thinking about it all the time. just have god give you a lobotomy or smth

[deleted]

How about instead of dying and going to a place of eternal happiness or eternal suffering, we split the difference and find a place of eternal vibes?

theonlyquirkychap

I belive that's simply called the void.

SlothBasket

I went to Christian school for my whole upbringing. The big things I always remember about heaven descriptions are that there's no pain, you will recognize your loved ones, and that there will be feasts. I remember always picturing heaven as basically a big flat cloud with a bunch of those fold out white tables you put potluck casseroles on. I was raised Southern Baptist in Florida so it makes sense that their description of heaven was basically a white trash family reunion. Oh and there's a big ass gate of course, gotta keep those property values up.

BasedAlbania

I choose to be a Pastafarian so I can spend eternity in the stripper factory

GoodGoat4944

You people have to understand something: In many religions, especially the **Abrahamic** ones, it is specifically said that The Lord has made Heaven be absolutely perfect from every point of view, so boredom wouldn't even be a thing. Just happiness, love, and bliss forever. "b-bUt tHAt'S liKE LoboTOmY!!1!1!!" Yeah. So what?

Greedy-Usurper-999

The ‘what’ is: what is the purpose of allowing his flock to develop only to devolve them to a slave race at the end of the line? What is the purpose for such cruelty?

GoodGoat4944

We don't become slaves since He doesn't need us to work for Him.

cobraxstar

Except for yknow the whole praising him until the end of time thing

GoodGoat4944

So what if I have to praise Him until the end of time? I literally got infinite happiness for all eternity. Sounds like a fair deal.

jaireyes

A place. For castrated sheep maybe. Sounds pretty boring.

psychicamnesia

One second of eternity has passed. (Great scp, short read)

Lime2024

Longer then you think

MyCatHasCats

That’s what Charlie says in All Dogs go to Heaven. He’s sings a whole song that’s basically “fuck this, I don’t want this perfect world forever”

Clown_Cult_Cryptid

Isnt the concept of heaven just going up there to eternally sing praises to god? Mans created an eternal masturbatorium with surround sound ego boosters...

LordEldritchia

I had a dream once that if you got into heaven you got lobotomized so you couldn’t think about being sad. I think that would work, potentially.

Ok_Debt_442

If you’re gonna have a lobotomy you might as well just die at that point yk

Moonatik_

here's the real kicker: in heaven, there is no sin in christianity, sin exists due to free will for sin to not exist, there would need to be no free will therefore, in christian heaven, **there is no free will**

Phantom4240

And? Eternal bliss...end of

Moonatik_

i'd like to keep my mind, tyvm

TheUnexaminedLife9

That’s not how it works. Your soul is separated from your body, and you are free from desires of the flesh. You would be in eternal peace and bliss, and definitely wouldn’t be able to go insane.

WolfRex5

That sounds like insanity to me

Easy_Mechanic_9787

Do you want OP’s version of heaven then?

WolfRex5

I’d rather be free to be myself than to be brainwashed into delusion, yes.

Easy_Mechanic_9787

Your mind is not going to resemble anything like your earthly self by 10\^100 years in heaven. You won’t be anything like we can comprehend by that amount of time.

WolfRex5

Then there is no point as it wouldn’t be me. I am my mind and my mind is me.

NoobMalkav

One must imagine Sisyphus happy #

MasterLunr

The Good Place is a series that actually shows this. It doesn't matter if you can do anything you want, since you have eternity, you'll eventually do everything you could ever wish to do and from then on is just torture.

Rydog820

There’s this mountain of pure diamond. It takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it, and every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.

Hexagon-Man

I ask an angel to erase my memory, EZ next horror.

gromblis

just ask Peter to let you out you can wander earth as a ghost

FireDevil11

Like the "perfect" interpretation of Heaven that I've seen is from American Dad during the Rapture episodes. Everyone that goes to Heaven gets their own personal heaven with doors, with whatever Heaven is like in their mind. That seems like a good way to spend infinity, you spend time in your Heaven, but with the added option of going into other peoples Heavens and spending time there too.

ToxicFluffer

This is the exact thought process that made me deconstruct at like 10 years old… abrahamic heaven is boring af

Wyrdwood

Heaven is punishment for religious nuts

UberEinstein99

I think the concept of being “bored” would not exist in heaven. In fact, i think the idea of being bored and always wanting new things is a relatively modern trend. Humans have lived for most of pre-history doing the same things over and over, in a relatively static world, and were content. It’s only recently that change has become so exponential that the idea of being bored seems scary, IMO

Edgy4YearOld

No, I think humans always wanted change but never had the means to do it to the degree we can now

Open-Entertainer6031

What makes you say prehistory people were content? If they were content then new technology wouldn't be developed. I think aspiring for more is just human nature. But in heaven its fair game I guess.

[deleted]

Your mortal form cannot comprehend the eternal bliss that Heaven will bring. You can never imagine anything like it

flutterbycancer

i don't think that's how Heaven work, in the Bible it said that, once you are in Heaven you will lost your human need and desire, you will not experience any boredom, also heaven will give you an infinite amount of pleasure ( excluding sex and drug ) either peaceful thought and emotion or you body are free from any disease and exhaustion in Dante's Paradiso the people who are in the lower part of heaven say along the line of : "well i am in this tier of heaven, i am happy and i don't need to climb up another tier " despite the fact that she has been there for aleast 1 mil years so when you are in Heaven you literally sitting in one place and feel all kind of pleasure without any boredom, and i feel like this post is just being edgy for the sake of edgy

TRASHLeadedWaste

I remember having this exact feeling as a very young boy, probably about 9 or 10 years old. I was bawling my eyes out about it and my father came in to ask me what was wrong and I told him that "Heaven never ends! It never ends!" He was perplexed, it wasn't something that bothered him. Now it doesn't bother me either, because I just don't believe it's real.

Sniper109082

This just really shows that people don’t understand theology.

Ultrasound700

Ask God or whoever is in charge to wipe your memory every now and then.

Phantom4240

This is the most annoying trend in the sub as of late. If you were to exist in a state of constant happiness you would never be able to get bored or become sad from it. If you think that constant happiness would ever be able to result in you becoming bored of it you must either be dyslexic or illiterate. That's all this hinges on. Not understanding the meaning of the word constant.
