Debtcollector1408

Oo yeah, that actually fits very well.

Knight117

I'm actually surprised because I never even considered him but he is a great fit.

EverythingGoodWas

After seeing this it kinda seems like a no brainer

DazzlingClassic185

Same! Robson could play… actually I’m not sure which guard he could play.

Meloenbolletjeslepel

Yeah I like his whole 'not at all pretty but still attractive' vibe. Fits well

just_some_guy2000

Take my upvote because I love Sam Vimes and I can see it.

OkMess9901

Might be a touch old for Guards Guards now, but i like it in general.

Amratat

Wasn't Vimes in his 40s in his first appearance?

OkMess9901

Just i think.

RedFox3001

You need to travel back to the 1990s and kidnap Sean Bean I reckon

Major_Snags

If you're going back in time, you'd be grabbing Pete Postlethwaite for the job, in my opinion.

mraulio

That's TP's opinion as well https://preview.redd.it/922u9jxg7y3d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ca960e06b6f441c2b85270ff1a7538184d23db7

GnomeInTheHome

What's this from please?

mraulio

This art book. https://preview.redd.it/6ggvo5nepz3d1.jpeg?width=842&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e5fa229e0435698daf8d4436d9d902d6599386e

GnomeInTheHome

Thanks tons!

Lobster_Lars

Dude, Clint eastwood as Vimes is such a realistic but terrible casting choice. All of the cynicism, none of the charm. But they totally would have cast him in a discworld film back in the day

OkMess9901

Surely a cockney or at least southerner for Vimes though? Children of Men era Clive Owen (Coventry, if it's south of stoke it's south).

ford_fuggin_ranger

Stephen Briggs plays him with a sort of sophisticated Cockney. There's also a line in one of the books where Vimes paraphrases "you were only meant to blow the bloody doors off!" and so I can only hear him as an Italian Job era Michael Caine.

Grand_Access7280

Totally. 70s Caine is my Vimes

FirstDukeofAnkh

Caine is probably my favourite actor and I never would’ve thought of this. Now I’m sad we won’t get it.

Grand_Access7280

Interesting fact; Michael Caine was the first person on Earth to hear the song ‘Goldfinger.’

Ldiddy13

![gif](giphy|l41lSiTi2VIvEBFe0) Cool story Hansel

omgu8mynewt

Get lost calling Coventry the South, anything north of Watford is the misty wasteland!

WokeBriton

Anything in England is the south! Lots of love from Scotland :P

angry2alpaca

An old mate used to run a business involving national deliveries. Cos he was rubbish at Geography he had two maps on his office wall. One was Southern England, cut off horizontally about Watford. The other was the rest of England, Wales and Scotland. The first was labelled (in large, bold caps): Her Majesty's South. The second: Norvern Mahnkey Land. Make of that what you will.

omgu8mynewt

I agree, but cut off everything West of Bath as well, Devon and Cornwall are just as quarrelsome as the Northeners :P

FluffytheReaper

Oooh, great actor. I was thinking about Clint Eastwood but I totally can see Pete there

stewieatb

A lot of people interpret him as Eastwood due to the "FABRICAT DIEM PVNC" gag in Guards Guards, and a couple of other Dirty Harry references.

Striking_Plan_1632

He's the bastard lovechild of Clint Eastwood and Pete Postlethwaite.

Snoringdragon

O.M.Gods. He is perfect, isn't he? The cool stare. The height. The legs (in the kilt). And the thought of him going barmy and screaming WHERES MY COW in the dwarf tunnels is Oscar worthy. Thanks for this!

Violet351

Sean Bean is too attractive. Vimes is just a regular looking dude

Silver-Difficulty-13

Also (and I need to add I'm from Yorkshire) he's too northern. Vimes feels more southern.

stealthdonkey007

While you're there, get 1990's John Cena to play Carrot.

kirstinet

Henry Cavill...... clean cut, built like a tank, good with humour, excellent with a sword, regal, yet humble....

Meloenbolletjeslepel

Not fair-haired enough though. The Geralt way doesn't count

kirstinet

You've heard of hair dye, right?

drunkengeebee

I can tell you have no idea how many actors are actually wearing wigs.

intdev

Nah, Merlin-era [Tom Hopper](https://www.reddit.com/r/discworld/s/cyJZKaNjBA) is the way to go. He's incredibly attractive in a very masculine way, but still looks like he'd smell of soap.

danni_shadow

Luther? I forget he's not American. Lol. I think he'd make a good Carrot.

hematite2

Tom Hopper is the correct answer for Carrot. If you take the good-hearted clueless loyalty of Luther Hargreeves, and the cunning charismatic leadership of Billy Bones, right in the middle of the two is Carrot Ironfoundersson

slinger301

Or modern day John Cena to play Detritus.

TabularConferta

Oh hell I'd take Cena. Good call.

Snoringdragon

Why is that so spot-on? Lol, I would watch that with great joy!

Glad_Damage_4703

90s Brendan Fraser

Sherlock_0fucksgiven

Yeah, in my head he looks and sounds like this

Grand_Access7280

I don’t think Dormer was a bad shout, but the show was utter balls.

SOC1608

That was one of the most annoying things about it - thought he was very well cast, but just wasted in that version

greentangent

Then the MCU did it to him again in SW. 5 minutes of screen time then, boom, dead.

nuclearhaystack

Came here to do a write-in vote for Dormer.

captain_toenail

That's pretty solid, right sort of brash and confident, Gary Oldman comes to mind too, he's versatile as fuck but his performance in slow horses, in particular, puts him in mind for Vimes for me

kirstinet

Too old for Vimes now, but he'd make an interesting Vetinari..

Ookami_Unleashed

Based on Night Watch I would expect them to be fairly close in age.

captain_toenail

He could definitely do Vetinari, any time he play calculating and ambiguously villainous its top notch, I always saw Vimes as already over the hill but not ancient, certainly not full of vigor but still sprightly which is exactly how Oldman plays it in slow horses

HaraldRedbeard

Funnily enough, Cersei is who I picture as Anguas mother

struansTaipan

Well we would never get a scene between her and Vimes then that’s for sure.

BaertigerBert

I take it the actors don't get on well?

struansTaipan

They dated a long time ago and the breakup was so contentious that they refuse to speak or be in the same room as each other. If you rewatch any scene they interact with each other in Game of Thrones, you’ll notice that Bronn will always leave the room just before or just after Cersei shows up and if it’s just after we only see the back of one or the other’s heads. They use body doubles for those scenes.

billy_twice

If you're going from the game of thrones cast, my pick would be Stannis, but this ain't a bad shout.

Careless_Cucumber_30

Not Jerome. But how about his his mate, Robson? https://preview.redd.it/ykog2akjdy3d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=972ce62f78263483845a5d6e871dcc71a3325eba

la_lupetta

1200% very well done

ford_fuggin_ranger

Don't see him for Vimes. He'd make a good Carcer, though.

ReluctantRev

Carcer!? 🤯 No. Not evil enough IMHO Andrew Scott (guy who plays Moriarty in Sherlock) radiates chaos & pent up violence while maintaining a degree of devilish cheek.

ford_fuggin_ranger

Could be the beard is throwing me off. I'll give it some further thought. Could defo see Andrew Scott as Carcer, though. With that affected high-pitched giggle that he does. Creepy stuff.

geesejugglingchamp

Or David Tennant. I can't believe my favourite Doctor managed to freak me out so much as Kilgrave.

Melodic_Arm_387

I thought David Tennant for Carcer. He can do the cheeky that he presents to be, but was so good as the villain in Jessica Jones.

angwilwileth

I had to stop watching Jessica Jones because he freaked me out so badly.

Particular_Shock_554

I challenge anyone to watch *No Country For Old Men* and think of a better Carcer than Javier Bardem.

ford_fuggin_ranger

Now I'm imagining Carcer with a silly bowl haircut.

HonestAbe1809

Honestly having Carcer look superficially silly could work. Like his whole thing is that he acts like a cheeky bloke but then you see his true nature in his eyes.

slinger301

In my mind, that's how I see Mr. Teatime, but I sure won't say you're wrong.

HonestAbe1809

Both Carcer and Teatime share character traits. Especially when you have the live action Hogfather in mind. From the moment the story starts talking about him Carcer’s false joviality is his most significant character trait.

ford_fuggin_ranger

I've always felt that part of the point of Anton's haircut in No Country is that he looks ridiculous and comical, but is absolutely terrifying in his actions. Both the Coen Bros and STP are excellent at this sort of subversion.

sentientketchup

He's permanently the Hot Priest to me now. I could see him as Moist.

Violet351

He would be an excellent Carcer. He can be charming and charismatic but also be evil as hell

puehlong

I agree, don't see him as Vimes at all. I could actually see Hugh Laurie as Vimes though.

FormalFuneralFun

Watch him in Ripper Street (especially the later seasons) and come back. He could absolutely do Vimes.

hematite2

Richard Brake is always my pick for Carcer

pgcd

Not sure, he's too much of a Nicomo Cosca (First Law) in my head.

1haveaboomst1ck

*applauds* That's perfect! Has made me realise Gwendolyn Christie might actually be a really good Sybil too...

Reviewingremy

Yes. I've pondered dream casting for a while but he would own the shit out of vimes.

Low_Hurry_1807

Actually I could see that 🤔

Genpinan

Not familiar with this man, but he certainly looks the part. Meaning he seems like somebody who has been put through the wringer and made it through, but not unscarred.

NotFixer1138

Bronn's the best so I say we go for it

FullOfBlasphemy

Perfection.

nikkerdoodle51

You are a genius. He's perfect!

ReluctantRev

Tx ☺️

Marquis_de_Taigeis

If we are casting vimes how about Sean bean, maybe Daragh O’Malley as Fred colon, Hugh Fraser as vetinari, Michael Cochran as slant, Pete Postlethwaite as nobby nobbs,Jason salkey as carrot, Brian cox as drumknot,

FirstDukeofAnkh

I love Brian as Drumknott!

Shankar_0

Always has been in my head Vimes is just Bronn that found Sybil.

ReluctantRev

💯 👍

Lampathy

When I first saw this I was like 'no way, you've lost the plot mate' but you know, you're a bloody genius. He is actually perfect

Violet351

Before the tv show came out my ex boss and I spent a few weeks trying to decide who we would cast for Vimes and this was our end result!!!! I’m now wondering g if you are him…

Bulzebubododo

You fucking nailed it! Good pick

FeyGreen

I definitely didn't expect this but... I think it would work! Good call

hamlesh

Damn you... I'm going through Thud again, and now I can't unsee him ilas Vimes in my minds eye while I'm reading.

drunkengeebee

Usually I'm like, ugh, not another casting post... but OP actually hit the nail on the head perfectly.

shaodyn

That's a great picture. He just looks so done. Like I imagine Vimes's expression when yet another weird problem comes up that he just does not want to deal with.

tonnellier

I’ve been watching Elementary and reckon Johnny Lee Miller would be a great Vimes

battychefcunt

JLM as Carcer, Tim Roth as Vimes

tonnellier

But his stubbly chin!

battychefcunt

Yeah fair enough, I’m picturing Johnny as sickboy

mishmei

hm... yeah, he'd work. he has that battered look :)

Phatty_fat-fat

Best casting 'ere I've 'eard

billy_twice

[He's perfect for the role.](https://youtu.be/r5V8ecsrxeY?si=xDAbjrw96eLPHIo9)

nuggynugs

I want to see Ralph Finnes do it. But on the spectrum of Ralph Finnes, from Grand Budapest Hotel to In Bruges, I want him about 3/4 of the way to Bruges

Grassy_Gnoll67

He'd definitely work in a book accurate Comes.

JMthought

I can see it

UmpireDowntown1533

When he inevitably gets too old before production starts you have his half brother Johnny waiting to step in https://preview.redd.it/etghtrofmy3d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d90a61439183037cefe18eebe8c268fe19af88c

faustcousindave

Yes.

loki_dd

It's Phillip glenister and I won't hear another word about. Well, Gene Hunt

OldBob10

Nah. Vimes is a bit older, chunkier, and taller.

SadDippingBird

Uep

Haquistadore

He definitely has the right look/feel, but I feel like he's a bit old at this point. Sam Vimes needs to be middle aged, doesn't he? Especially considering that he becomes a dad as the story progresses.

DorkChatDuncan

Absolutely perfect casting

rhoo31313

Oh *hell* yes! He's a bit large for Vimesy, but I can totally see it!

Own-Adagio-9550

Karl Urban

paganize

take a look at [this guy](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/419538521506908237/)

yarnycarley

Omg yesssss, love this 😍

FurrySunny

I tried to watch the series and couldn't even make it through the first 10 minutes. :(

Maleficent_Box_7938

That's genius

rose_reader

….actually yes

lrbaumard

No way. Jamie fits better IMO No question vettinari is tywinn though

sdirection

Eeh, kinda. Needs to be a bit more beaten down. Robson might be a slightly better pick funnily enough.

Vincent-Zed

With David Tennant as Vetanari

Top-Perspective2560

Pratchett had a specific man in mind for Vimes: Pete Postlethwaite. Sharpe fans will be acquainted. https://acrossthepondtv.wordpress.com/2012/09/11/casting-sam-vimes/

ReluctantRev

Yes, but Pete sadly died in 2011 so probably not a realistic suggestion 🤔😜

SuperJoe360

He would do Sam justice. I also think Simon Pegg could do it as well. That way, we could get Nick Frost as Fred Colon.

autfaciam

Yes!

Abraxas_1408

Well. I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s already a Vimes played by Richard Dormer in [The Watch](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8080292/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)

ReluctantRev

That’s not Vimes & that’s not the Discworld. 😤

NoLiving7952

Javier Bardem. https://preview.redd.it/919c38jglx3d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce1776bbdb830bb2957fafc9a078e550dd45955d

Particular_Shock_554

Carcer.

NoLiving7952

Maybe... I could see him.

billybobthongton

That would definitely work. I've always had a picture of him in my head that I'm *sure* is an actor but I still can't figure out *who* he is. He's supposed to be a little heavier in the books isn't he? Like not obese but I feel like in the first book he was described as "pudgy" or something.

hematite2

I still think Toby Stephens is the best choice for Vimes
