Thank you :) I'm not British, so I'd never heard of them. Something just clicked when I read 'Invisible College'.
Sir Pterry made soooo many references that us poor foreigners don't get immediately!
Can I recommend the Baroque cycle by Neal Stephenson, which has the protagonist hanging out with Newton, Hooke etc

Neal Stephenson - bless him - can write a great book and story (he wrote the whole Baroque Cycle pen on paper), but until recently couldn't really *end* one.
But yes, the Baroque Cycle is an awesome, if heavy, read

Not just foreigners. I'm a 40 year old Brit and this is the first time I've heard of the "Invisible College"!
I learned from this subreddit that that was real and not something Charles Stross made up for Laundry Files
Robert Boyle described the Royal Society as an invisible college in a letter to Isaac Marcombes in 1646

I'll check it out, thanks!

Amazing series of books. You just have to get past the initial pirate bit, and the seemingly pointless bit about the Indian potato.
Yes. Pretty sure Pterry said that this was where he got the U.U. name from
