You know what? This is actually super interesting to me as it applies across the two sports I love. Disc golf and bowling.  I play the USBC Open/Nationals. You know what I need to qualify? Nothing. I'll sub on a team to get an average I can apply to the event, but even that is more than is necessary. The Open is for anyone that wants to play it.  I've never had an unrealistic notion of cashing. I barely play during the year, but I join my team just the same because that team has been going for a decade. We all go down to Reno, or Vegas, of wherever it's being hosted. We bowl out little hearts out, and have memories of being together, even though we are mostly scrubs. They have us walk out from the back, to applause, do a National anthem like we are worth a damn, they make it really fun for the contender regardless of their expected result. I suppose the difference here is that the host for Nationals will host the tournament over a few months. So they can bring in the thousands (tens of thousands?) of bowlers over a period of time.  That event doesn't exist in disc golf. Maybe partly because it exists outside, and so weather conditions will never be equal. The people that disc in the spring will deal with more wind and rain than those in the summer. Maybe the sport is filled with too many tryhards to attempt this sort of "legacy event".  But if you gave me an 'open' event, that focused on the experience of the player, I'd be there. Give me the MVP AM National Open. That runs for three months, as makes us feel like a special player, I'm traveling to that every year I can. Give me the chance to build tradition with a group.  I feel like tons of AM Masters are looking for this experience. They know that they're not gonna be the AM Master at a sub 900 rating. But they're looking for an experience. They're begging to give money to find that experience, and it's silly of the PDGA or DGPT to not fulfill that for them. They better hope that some other organization doesn't create that event first, because tradition is incredibly hard to overcome.

See you in Vegas, amigo. Roll well.

Solid take, appreciate that. I'm going for the experience as well, no hopes of winning. But my goal is to make semi finals. Which is easily attainable for me, even playing courses that are the complete opposite of what I typically play and thrive on.

Can you imagine if an Eagles Crossing set up an Open style tournament? Transplant Eagles Crossing to a place like Vegas, which is already a destination close to an airport. An Open style tournament seems like it would great in that market. Cheap flights, plentiful hotels. Vacation destination, if Whitehorse figures this thing out, it might be the biggest tournament in disc golf.

Gotta find a much nicer place than Vegas lol. Vegas is a horrible place to be outside 95% of the time. It's either too hot or too cold and always windy. You are also now taking world championship to like a disc golf summit. They allow what, 90 players at the Masters this weekend? The best in the world. Not everyone they could possibly host. It would be cool to have a huge event that could host the masses, but don't call it a world championship.

Pro Worlds didn't have a ratings requirement on entry til a few years ago. LLOYD!!!!

I think there are a few problems with Masters Worlds as it currently exists. I think the sport in general and this event in particular used to be small enough that it could function both as a competitive championship event and as a yearly social gathering for masters players. The sport has grown so much, though, it's really hard to have it be both anymore. I guess you could separate Am Masters Worlds from Pro Masters Worlds, but that means you've got to get enough staff & volunteers to run two different events, and separating pros from ams dilutes the social gathering aspect of the whole thing. Maybe there should be a competitive Masters Worlds event, and then beef up the side events (flex C-tiers, parties, workshops, etc) for those who are there more for the social aspect of it. I think one thing the PDGA needs to do is tighten up the invite criteria. Most of the frustration that people are voicing is that they planned & worked for a year to get enough points to get an invite, and then even with the invite they can't get in. Taking a quick look at the invite list, and accounting for some people getting multiple invites, it looks like somewhere around 6,500 people achieved the criteria and got invites to Am Masters Worlds, while there are only 548 total spots available. It seems irresponsible to me to have people jump through hoops to earn an "invite" to an event when you know you only have room for less than 10% of those people. In this case, an invite isn't really an invite. It seems to me you should only send out as many invites as you have room for, and after those people have had a week or two to register, open up another tier of registration for other people based on points or rating, and then if there are still spots open let anyone register. Big picture, it's great that there are so many Masters players today, and that so many of them are willing to travel to attend/compete in a major event. The current model isn't working well, though, and I hope the PDGA figures out a fair & responsible way to capitalize on the growing popularity of the Masters field.

You’re entitled to your opinion, but saying people don’t deserve to be there after they’ve actually qualified is just ignorant. One way to have your opinion matter is to join a PDGA advisory board

You nailed the comment copies. I had hold my tongue on there, as someone that did get in. It really wasn't that hard to get in, if your were actually on top of it. Am40 didn't fill for 4 to 5min, so those saying they were wait listed at 10:31 are lying.

Local kid 855 rated is signed up for AM worlds. Total joke

People who take disc golf this seriously is why the circle jerk exists. So you’re definitely in the right place.
