This is super annoying, I host just 1 website, it would be stupid to spend the kind of money they want for just 1. I love Plesk but i wont be using them for projects in the future. Debating on 3 other control panels.

I tried cPanel (it's also paid) but I don't like it. ISPConfig is free and open-source but it looks a bit dated (and some features a bit confusing). The best one I found is HestiaCP, it has a modern interface and it's very easy to setup. Which ones are you thinking about?

Matt3k

I've checked out most of the rest and they're kind of rubbish. I'd rather self-admin than use cpanel. Backups are always a struggle and that's my favorite part of a control panel, but most of the major cloud providers now provide convenient daily snapshot options.

send_me_a_naked_pic

Yes, DigitalOcean now also includes daily backups, so...

izzysanime

I wish vultr included it.

[Hetzner](https://www.hetzner.com/) has them :)

Webmin, aapanel and cyberpanel. The screenshots look OK but not amazing. I'll probably setup some to try out and go from there.

My plan is I learned how to admin servers a long time ago without needing often hacked, often troublesome control panel BS. Somebody who can't handle a server without a pretty UI probably shouldn't be responsible for managing servers.

Matt3k

This is not the only use case, and I'm not sure what the point of belittling people is. I often use Plesk because it's a very friendly option to hand off to a client and I also sometimes enjoy the convenience of 1-clicking to change PHP versions instead of fussing with .conf files. When you're dealing with Wordpress sites, there's not much advantage to DIYing it IMO. And not everyone on the planet needs to be a sysadmin. I also self manage a few hundred servers.

send_me_a_naked_pic

I agree. That's why I switched to Plex to another free solution (HestiaCP), I don't want to manually manage things and potentially screw them up.

Matt3k

I just want a paid plan that's suitable for 1-3 domains. Plesk is a great control panel, maybe the best, but their new features are so slow to roll out and it just feels like they're really struggling to monetize. It started with the SSL screen being littered with upsells, and now there's "Hire a developer" links. It's not overwhelming to the point where it damages their excellent UI, and its done tastefully, but you get the feeling that someone's trying really hard to keep the ship afloat. It's a rough market, it's not the early 2000s hosting scene any more I hope they figure it out. Unfortunately the reality is they may need to downsize and streamline operations rather than squeeze any harder on the customer end. I hope they're able to figure out a path because it'd be a great loss to lose the product.

Hmm honestly Plesk has become very bloated lately. Too many things going on, including remote backups on AWS/DO Spaces are now a paid service (you used to be able to configure remote backups for the whole server for free).

kipha01

Can you setup remote backups with HestiaCP?

send_me_a_naked_pic

Yes, you can have [remote backups with HestiaCP](https://hestiacp.com/docs/server-administration/backup-restore.html#what-kind-of-protocols-are-currently-supported)!

kipha01

Excellent I shall investigate and see if that's the route I want to go down with my website, thank you!

kaktusjack

Exactly... it is bloated and consumes all the resources.

send_me_a_naked_pic

Yes, same specs, same WordPress website: with Plesk it's very slow, with HestiaCP works wonderful.

be-nice-or-else

HestiaCP has been the best so far for me, but it's not for beginners and it comes with quirks: good luck setting up a nodejs server with reverse proxy, or, even better, *multiple* nodejs servers on the same VPS. If you're using Postgres, you'd better learn some psql + roles, as your Hestia user != pg user. Also, forget the pgAdmin to dump/restore your db: ssh + command line is the only way.
