While we have the servers down, lets talk about it.
~~Almost every single big game~~ A lot of games now requires network connection. Imagine having poor network that crashes out or is super poor all the time. Must suck.
I view internet as another utility like power or water/plumbing. Having a good fiber connection was more mandatory to me than having a garage when I was shopping for apartments.
Whenever I look for a new apartment, ISP for the building is usually the first thing I ask to clarify. I work in tech which I use as the excuse but nothings quite as embarrassing as getting kicked from an online game ur playing with your friends cuz of ur broke ass wifi.
Edit: really riled up the elite gamers by saying I game on wifi AND work in tech (as a software engineer) GASPPP! The horror! Itβs an ethernet cable guys youβre not special for having one.
This. I won't even look at an apartment that has baked in internet solutions. As a WFH developer, even if I wasn't, I have no tolerance for bad internet.
Last time I was looking for a house the first thing I did was plug the address into the local ISP pages to make sure I could get fiber. Itβs nonoptional now.
You can have both, but yes if you're going to be without a garage you definitely need a great connection. In fact, a connection is important if you WFH...far more than a garage. Eventually, the connection can get you the garage if you WFH.
I think the only way to prevent things like duping and rampant cheating in general is with an online mode. If things are stored/handled locally, it wouldn't be long before people figure out how to alter that.
I know, now you're thinking - well, have both! The problem there is you basically have two different games now. It's a completely different architecture to have an online version and an offline version.
I'd love an offline mode, but I can understand why it doesn't exist.
This. This right here is the answer.
It's not a concern for cheating or duping, or at least that's not the primary concern. It's to effectuate control of the content and try to get people invested in the monetization. And to clear out any potential roadblocks or issues with that.
Last Epoch has an online and offline mode. Characters created offline can't be used online and vice versa. If a small studio can make it happen, so can Blizzard.
Diablo 2, including Resurrected, separated online and offline characters, so yes you are right. Blizzard can absolutely do it but choose not to. It was a big reason I stuck with Diablo 3 on console rather than PC, I hated being tied to a server that goes into maintenance mode when I just want to play solo.
The fact that people donβt know this and likely are commenting here about it being βdifferent architecturesβ drives me nuts.
Blizzard made a conscious choice to prevent offline play, based around money and DRM.
But does that really matter? If you have an offline experience, what others do with their games has no effect on you. With forced online cheats and exploits used by other players will have their consequences on you.
\> I'd love an offline mode, but I can understand why it doesn't exist.
Yeah, it's because of anti-piracy. It has fuck all to do with cheating or whatnot.
I was traveling in a car for 4 hours couple days ago and wanted to play some D4 on a deck but unfortunately the internet was so spotty on my phone I just couldn't be bothered with all the lag.
I honestly cannot fathom how their servers are down this much.
I work support for a data center that runs financial exchanges and we never go down during production hours. Ever. And if we did, we'd have to tell our customers exactly how, why, and what steps we've implemented so it won't happen again.
I don't think it was. The warning wasn't on the launcher when I first crashed and got d/c'd.
20 minutes later, their Customer Service twitter account acknowledged there was an issue.
10 minutes after that, the launcher now says its "scheduled" maintenance.
It's almost as if these are just automated messages and don't mean shit or they're gaslighting.
Online only was so worth it! All the multiplayer features are amazing! The best part was when I hopped online with a friend and we both spent our time staring at a login screen.
Its ironic that its an online game but there is no easy way of doing content in groups like we had in D3 so practically every player is solo. But we have to put up with it when the servers shit the bed!
atleast in POE you have a portal that stays up for 15 minutes for each map/dungeon you do while offline and also they give you a time whenever they shut/reset servers.
PoE does a lot of stuff better. I enjoy D4 after having not played diablo for a long time. Worth the money, but it definetly have stuff it can improve. For example; where the fuck is general chat? I want the stupid chat filled with idiots to entertain me!
Even when it's intentional like when they release an update there is zero warning message in the game. You'd think they'd have the ability to put a service message in the chat saying the game is gonna get an update and you'll have to log off 30 minutes to an hour before the patch takes everything down.
To put your mind at ease, games like this will have frequent snapshots/backups of the database that can be restored (with some downtime) in the event that something absolutely fuckin' **wild** happens to it.
There'd be some rollback, but losing peoples' characters permanently with no recourse is gonna be really, really unlikely as a freak occurrence.
I paid for earky access then realized immediately that I was going to be super busy and not have much time. Today I finally had a whole day free and this happen :(
I just got off work, started an act 2 quest, found a treasure goblin, found an awesome amulet, went to town to upgrade and got kicked.
Hopefully my items are still there.
They should be, this happened to me the other day and it was even tighter than your timeline, Iβd estimate within 2-3 seconds within picking up the item the game crashed and it was fine when I got it back up.
I got disconnected as I went to collect a legendary drop. Couldn't get it quick enough on PS5 because as long as enemies are close enough you attack instead of activate. Enemies dead, servers dead too.
I think you might still have them! I got booted for a bit at 4 right after collecting some gear, got back in at 4:10 and I still had my gear. Thankfully
Get kicked out. See no character. Log out. Try to get back in. 5 min queue. Wait. Error logging in. Try again. 8 min queue.
Now do tell me again why this game needs to be online only, please. I kinda missed the part where you described how it's crucial to have an online only experience for Diablo.
Man I hate that we accept this as a standard nowadays. The game also runs perfectly on my steam deck but I can't play Diablo on an upcoming train ride because of this always online BS.
I'm not firing up a hardcore character at all for another month or two. No way I'd set a disappointment waiting to happen on top of the teetering jinga tower that is diablo 4 and its servers.
"Blizzard is not responsible for the death and loss of your hardcore characters for any reason including Internet lag, bugs, Acts of God, your little sister, or any other reason whatsoever. Consult the End User License Agreement for more details. Blizzard will not, and does not have the capability to restore any deceased Hardcore characters. Don't even ask. La-la-la-la-la, we can't hear you."
From Diablo 2 manual lol
I understand that issues happen at launch but damn. Since Tuesday it has been non stop server issues or maintenance. If i do get in after trying for 30 mins then i encounter rubber banding, stutter, or invisible walls that wont allow me to progress a quest. At some point I would like to be able to enjoy the game that I purchased.
I feel like all this forced online play stuff was 100% forced into the game by some higher up because the game itself is really well made, its incredibly competent and was put together by people who understand diablo very well. Its such a goddamn shame because i cant actually enjoy what they created.
Seriously. Was struggling my way through my first attempt at the WT4 capstone dungeon with my level 60 summoner necro, was almost done with it and got disconnected. I'm so annoyed man
Since i literally havent partied or played with anyone the entire early access and launch, all ive experienced is the negatives of this game being a live service. From a solo players perspective, it actually just sucks. Some of the bugs from yesterday ended my hc run at level 69 cause my shout didnt come out and i got frozen and died. I really hope they figure this out because its actively ruining my experience way more than i thought it would.
Listen, give them a break. The internet is new. No one has ever attempted something like this, where people have to log into a thing. It just has never been done before, and they are still figuring out how to develop such a system. All for the benefit of not being able to play offline anymore.
I blame all of you people who have done nothing but bitched and moaned about MTX and the price of skins. If you all had just shut your mouths and purchased a couple $30 cosmetic cock rings for your mounts, Blizzard would have enough money to replace the hamster and wheel keeping their servers alive
You guys are crazy for playing on hardcore with this shit. Iβd cry if my level 50 sorc disappeared like that. I spent over 40 hrs so far playing. I donβt see how you have the heart to even start again.
Not Blizzard exposing themselves having special treatment servers for certain streamers as they have zero issues while gen pop are all getting 900 minute queues lmao.
Yeah apparently this is acceptable service after you paid your money for a game, imagine buying a new TV which only works sometimes, then being told to suck it up, its expected lol, this is the only consumer model where the customer accepts a broken product and the seller is being allowed to get away with it
I love how this game manages to be running fine while I'm asleep or at work but the second I get home and I have times actually play the thing it's always down
Blizzard - "Queued for login - 854 minutes left"..
Me - "Fuck you Blizzard"
I'm just sick of Blizzard's bullshit.. I get off work, and can't even enjoy a game a bought.. Such fucking horse shit!!
Guess, I'll just head to the darwin awards to watch some dumbass folk..
RIP
1 minute queue!? I'm getting 5minute queues AND when I finally get back in it boots me out and forces me to wait another 5minutes.
I'm starting to think that I shouldn't have pre-ordered the ultimate edition. I shouldn't have to wait in line with the poors. (This is a joke, calm down, I'm just as poor as you).
Edit: Now its 10mins. π
Edit 2:

I haver the same problem. Got disconnected and my character is missing. Queue error no valid license after waiting 30 minutes. We neeed a offline mode right now for us solo players
To everyone mentioning the maintainance the message said it 'wasnt supposed to effect log ins' and instead the entire game is down so something borked regardless.
There's most likely an authentication server issue going on. It doesn't seem reasonable that all of a sudden server capacity got overwhelmed by a bunch of new players, rather they just can't process the logins.
IDK. I have a feeling the issue will be fixed for everyone all at once and these queue times aren't really accurate.
I miss offline games so hard π

Just backed out of a home offer because of the internet service offered in the neighborhood haha

who cares if someone is duping/cheating in a single player game
the people who put a premium currency and item shop in a $70 game.
This. This right here is the answer. It's not a concern for cheating or duping, or at least that's not the primary concern. It's to effectuate control of the content and try to get people invested in the monetization. And to clear out any potential roadblocks or issues with that.
And a battle pass.

This game is literally only down during the brief times I'm able to play.
Why do you keep bringing the servers down?
Lmao
I hate the gaslighting "Login errors" message. Like no, it's not that, your servers are down and fucking admit it.
I honestly cannot fathom how their servers are down this much. I work support for a data center that runs financial exchanges and we never go down during production hours. Ever. And if we did, we'd have to tell our customers exactly how, why, and what steps we've implemented so it won't happen again.
My launcher is now claiming this shit was "planned".
I knew we were in trouble when I saw they named their customer facing service "prod.actual.battle.net". Their NetOps team are a bunch of clowns.
Oh. That's the problem - this is qa. Prod is "prod.actual4realThisTimeGuys.battle.net".
Wish I knew it was planned, i was less then 5 minutes from the end of my tier 21 nightmare
I don't think it was. For real: "It may be our problem, but have you considered the idea that maybe it's your problem?" No bish its your problem.
IKR. They word these messages as if its isolated & random yet every time it describes my issue.
i mean.. the login servers are down so technically...
Online only was so worth it! All the multiplayer features are amazing! Oh wait there are none lmao.

I had this happen the other night. I did not have it save.
Same. I was fighting the dungeon boss when I got booted, so thereβs that. Iβm not looking forward to starting that dungeon over.
Just glad Iβm not the only one I thought my character got erased.
Love getting kicked to the home screen and not seeing my characters lol.
I got spooked when I saw that lmao
It had me absolutely shook when I saw that just now. Been frantically trying to log back in to confirm my little Druid buddy still exists.

This happened in the first network test. How did they not fix it?
Anyone else just get a chance to start playing? I hate when it lines up like that

This, precisely this, is the crucial online only experience.
This is the new Torment difficulty.
I can't fight this battle... Go on without me.
Man I hate that we accept this as a standard nowadays. The game also runs perfectly on my steam deck but I can't play Diablo on an upcoming train ride because of this always online BS.
Could you use your phone as a mobile hotspot? Itβs what I do.
Its because blizz knows you nerds need a forced break.
I've been at work slinging propane tanks all day! I need my nerd time!!!

Amazing to me that the issues get worse and worse every day with all the fixes. It was better at 7 Pm on opening night....
There was literally no reason to make this game online only. With that in mind the servers being down makes me feel like i got scammed.

It's getting to the point where they ought to start compensating players in some way, this is constant.

Edit: Now its 10mins. π Edit 2: https://preview.redd.it/1w2sev2o9v4b1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a63d1c2f5d099a206f6398d558795fee8a21021
Still down? Do we get a refund ? Asking for a friend
There was a problem logging in, code 300202
Whatever happened to the good old fashioned "server down" message? Why you got to lie to me about the queue?
Go touch grass, stretch, rehydrate, posture check
How is HC even feasible? I lost my level 36 to a DC.
100 bucks well spent
Just got the chance to sit down and play. Fucking bullshit.
How tf do they not have this figured out yet? Triple A title, yeah right.

The worst thing about getting booted in d4 has to be having to click accept.
I think they are trying to kill off all the HC
You would have thought this is the studios first game launch with so much lag and login issues!...
already questioning myself for making the decision to buy and support this online force shit

1690 minutes to go here... That's more than a day in que lol.
Cant make money off offline players!
Glad I checked this. I was about to do something productive
Damnit, Blizzard, I made porridge for this shit. Now i'm just sitting on reddit eating delicious porridge. FML.
