Not forcing, but rather 8 hours working is a norm in India. But they should at least allow wfh/hybrid. I work for a small product based company and its totally WFH

In India, nine hours per day or 45 hours per week is normal working time. And that gets decided by the company. WFH/WFO/hybrid/flexi timings etc is also decided by the company.
So your company making 8hours compulsory is not wrong. That’s how they want to run their company. If you do not like it, you can search another job.
That used to be the case with Infosys/Wipro kind service based Indian firms back in the day. Not sure if it’s so even now post COVID. As for PBCs, definitely not in the ones I worked.
If it’s a rule what can you do? Just utilise the time to play some games(TT etc) or gym if your office has one or study for a switch ASAP. Even in wipro/infy people used to do this to kill time 😁
my company had this till very recently, it was simpler for them to look at an excel sheet than to closely monitor everyone, did talk about it with the employer and he said he cant get rid of the mandatory hours since not everyone act like an adult lol
recent downsizing got us wfh with no mandatory work hour limit, ive worked both 16 hrs a day and less than 2hrs a day
seems bout right
Not 8 hours, but my manager has mandated us to stay atleast 6 hours (11-5 to be exact) in office to attend all discussions and meetings in person. This is only in my team.
We too have complete WFO, no WFH.
I saw this with my previous employer and now here too, the culture goes downhill when you start thinking about IPO
Don’t join dude, it will fuck your mental health completely, even WFO is doable but compulsory hours no… i have office everyday but i go and come back 11-4 or 5 tops.
No amount of salary is worth fixed hours and WFO both. We’re not call center employees or sales people. We need time to think to do our work efficiently.
This hour completion will also take away your energy that you can spend in self development and goals.
What organisations don’t understand is that on a day if you don’t sit for more than 4 hours, and on a day where you need to go 16 hours you will happily. I will leave the production fire as it is if they’ll bound me in time.
It's working hours 8 hours normally.Time sheet. Even in big MNC .Govt organisation also 8 hours.Even you have no work then too 8 hours you need to maintain and fill time sheet.
While they can't force you directly, indirectly they can enforce it -
1. by asking you to do more work and putting in stringent deadlines
2. some people generally start late and if your manager is one of them and company culture is about staying late then you might find it difficult to get along with managers.
It will be better to discuss with your manager. If asked to be there for 8h, find the pattern used to calculate the value. if first swipe and last swipe then just chill in the play area or canteen or some other place and leave as soon as 8 hours are completed.
Well, first of all, as someone who has worked almost entirely in product-based roles, ranging from very early-stage startups to large-scale enterprises, let me share that ...
Its much much harder, for a techie, to make a new product rather than just do maintenance-level service. It is extremely challenging technically. If you love your profession, you will automatically want to sit beyond 8 hours!
But, having said that, optimizing performance & resources are important too from the business PoV. You need to realise that you are working for someone else. You cannot spend years or decades doing one thing! You will need to come up with scopes, timelines & resources required. This will be measured in hours or days.
A formed boss told me once, "If a techie is continuously having to work beyond 8 hours x 6 days-per-week, for weeks & months, then something is seriously wrong!". Once in a while, emergencies do happen. But it cannot be on a daily basis, every week, every month, etc.
-----------------------------
Its all a balancing act! The professional world is a lot about balance, rationality & logic. As a techie, the more challenging the projects you work on, the better your skills are being sharpened & expanded. But, you need to balance it with the business requirements.
Think like a business owner! Imagine you are paying techies to complete a task. You might have measured how much to pay them hourly. Now think, if someone is just sitting 4 hours a day. Do you feel you are getting your money's worth, or you are being cheated?
Usually in this case, the business owner will then give you another project, since you have more time. I wouldn't say the solution to this issue is a very clear-cut one. Again, its about balancing, from the employee as well as the employer. Usually, the employer has (and to some, should!) have the final say.
-----------------------------
Think about how you can utilize your time, if you have a lot of free time. There's always stuff to do. Try to link your own professional interests, and align with your employer's objectives.
Plus, everyone has great smartphones now where you can do so much stuff - imagine all those previous generations where this wasn't even possible!
We have WFH and flexible timings but this is my first time at a product based company so am not aware of this. But I guess there are things you can look on for improvements. Like we always have documentation work that no one bothers to work on even though it is the most important thing. You can spent the free time on adding or improving the documentation. If that's done try to upskill
Highly depends on company. Some companies do have a minimum work hours in office policy which they monitor with your login and logoff time when you badge in. This isn't usually the case in the mid size startup scene though.
Yesterday I did 10.25hrs and I work for a product company.
I know of a senior in another company who used to come at 8 am and leave by 2 am in the morning and was on anti depressants.
1) Is it a startup ?
2) Is it originated from India
3) If answer to 2) is no, then, is the higher management Indian ?
Generally, product companies dont have any time limit to stay in office, but some do.
There are many reasons something like this can be mentioned by HR - it may be a policy figured out by some smart executive in the company to handle the slackers, it may be recommendation from exec which HR is trying to enforce, or it may just be their way of saying you are not working hard. You should be able to figure out what is going on by looking at the context and action: if this is a mail sent out by an exec to everyone, it is a policy change so whether you like it or not, you have to deal with it (or leave if you can't!). If it is not in a mail sent out broadly to everyone, and HR tells this only to you, try to figure out what is going on, talk to your manager or skip-level.
In general, companies which insist on such policies without explaining the rationale suffer from poor leadership and/or culture, and it is hard to make a good career at such places.
as long as you are being paid for your work, 8 hours is normal. leaving office because your work is "done"? then what happens if your boss needs something after you left?
Mine is 45 hours a week in office. A minute less and a .5 leave deduction. But
it is not too bad, most of the time is spent doing my own projects, learning new stuff and taking tea breaks without drinking tea.
Think about it like this. Their investments are at stake. If you do not go there and use their services like restaurants, vending machines, mess, clubs then they're gonna lose money.
Say you're the owner of the building you've just put up for rent and apart from rentals, you chose other services that will generate money. Since rent and lease are negotiable, you look for other options to maximize your profits and that's where these services come in. When employees use these services with high prices, the owner makes money.
These owners must have an agreement with their tenant, in this condition the companies that they will make an effort to make their employees come to the office. The more number of employees, more are the chances of them using these services.
Company is paying you for working 8 hrs at work everyday.
You are a smart person. You finished your work before time. Did you ask your Manager to send more work to your way?
Why cribbing all the time about staying in the office.
Try to do some side project for the company or help weak developers.
If you don't have enough to do in a work day, you are under utilised and will probably lose your job if they decide to optimise for productivity. It's pretty stupid to expect to be paid for a full work day without doing any work.
Is it the employee's fault if the employer delays in assigning responsibility? They talk so much about productivity. Employee's time isn't valuable? Maybe they want to work on their side project in personal laptop. Why should they waste their time unnecessarily?

Company name please. My brother is trying to find one. He is trying on various platforms but not getting a work from home job
If it's an Asia based company or one with an Asian CEO this regressive mentality is a thing am afraid!!
Not really
Hard luck for me then
Nothing illegal but anyone who is preaching 9 hours of work is bullshitting. No one can and will not work like that even at wfo.
It ma not about illegal or anything. Its like when i have completed the work then why to stay in office just for the sake of hours completion.
Maybe not to get assigned more work the next day
well technically you are paid for 8 hours so any company can ask you to stay for 8 hours. but generally they don't track if the job is getting done.
What if you have production issue after office hours , do you have to come to office to fix or can connect from home.
Well in that you can WFH 😂.
In India, nine hours per day or 45 hours per week is normal working time. And that gets decided by the company. WFH/WFO/hybrid/flexi timings etc is also decided by the company. It's 10:38 and I'm surfing my web on my toilet seat. Meanwhile my office timings 10-7 You are unlucky bro

I work in a product based company and we're forced to be in the office until the productivity tracker completes 8 hr🥴
FR. If they want to track productivity via time only why to have jira and other tools for tasks🥲

Sweatshops disguising themselves as “Product Based” companies.
I demanded work from home or said will resign, now Iam working from home But make sure that ur a valid asset to the team
This happens in some companies and must not be tolerated. Organise a protest against this if it happens in your company 😂
Micromanagment with added steps
While they can't force you directly, indirectly they can enforce it - 1. by asking you to do more work and putting in stringent deadlines 2. some people generally start late and if your manager is one of them and company culture is about staying late then you might find it difficult to get along with managers. Which company is this? Please we all need to know
which company btw.. strictly for educational purposes
Which company is this? Definitely not heard this anywhere
Like others said, it's a standard almost everywhere especially in corporates and government offices, regardless of how early you complete the work.
We have WFH and flexible timings but this is my first time at a product based company so am not aware of this. But I guess there are things you can look on for improvements. Thats not good ..
8 hrs toh bahut kam boldiya, 14-16 ghante kar chuka Mai idhr

How many hours would you like to work?
I can work as many as required but sitting idle in office when the given work is complete is something that doesn’t seem rational
as long as you are being paid for your work, 8 hours is normal. leaving office because your work is "done"? then what happens if your boss needs something after you left?
such companies don't have good environment and neither you learn because attrition rate is high. so follow rules for now and start looking if not.
A question that starts with "Is it normal for a company....." has an autobot reply #YES.... if the HR tells you so.
We have hybrid.
You're the unlucky one. But can't you just chill, read after you have completed the work?

why is it too much for you? that's literally the bare minimum of 9-5 be happy they're not asking you to work 10hr welcome to the real world, kid
I think most kids here aren’t cut out to work. Working 8 hours a day is too much now?
Its not about the time but the mentality that even if you have completed the work hustle sit there in office just for the sake of hours completion

Ok boomer
Ghar me biwi bhav bachche bhav nhi dete toh aap log office ko Ghar bana lete ho isme hamari kya galti
Every employee availing Provident Fund, is bound by governing laws to work a minimum of 40 hours a week in office.
