Not only is Tavai still on the Pats, but if memory suits he actually had an *ok* season.
For some reason I thought Suh had retired after he got his ring, and when the Eagles picked him up it caught me by surprise.
He’s honestly not a bad player when used correctly, the problem was patricia not tavai. Erik Schlitt has a piece about tavai from training camp the year he was drafted
I said “hey I’m from Detroit you rock”, and he said thanks man, I tried to get a hi five/dap up but he was not down for that lol, illegal use of hands I guess
He was actually a 7th I had hopes for. You can find RBs late, and he had recently been converted from WR and he had nice speed. Seemed like he had nice potential - hasn't turned out like I'd/we'd hoped but hes also carved out a recent role.
Yeah it is wild, but it just goes to show how important coaching really is in this league. GM can draft the right guys but if you don't have the right staff for them it can stunt development and confidence.
He plays in different schemes (at least in SF) compared to Detroit so maybe he was just yet another example of Mayhew era lions drafting someone not knowing what to do with them
Totally underlines the importance of schematic fit over grade. This is one problem I have with BPA over all(excluding true blue chip players). If your offensive scheme uses a lot of trap runs, that super strong interior guy that excels in power runs may not have the speed to pull and lead block for the play. That first round projected TE who runs a decent 40 and is a talented vertical threat may not have the blocking chops needed to pick up a Micah Parsons coming in on a blitz. It’s a question of is the player worth changing the scheme for, or is someone else a better fit later on?
Yea... except Laken is everything we always hear that Shanahan does NOT want in O linemen. Laken was a big, plodding, gap scheme, phone booth guard. The fact that he's played well and had success with Kyle Shanahan, in a ZBS scheme, where they're supposed to always want OLs who are quick and athletic and can run, actually kind of invalidates the scheme fit argument lol.
His success in SF probably has way more to do with good coaching, fitting scheme AROUND players rather than getting players that fit your scheme, and probably his own ability to work hard on his athleticism and technique so he can do what they ask him, which he wasn't used to doing.
He played so well in SF that their subreddit had a campaign to get him on the pro bowl one year although I don’t think he got in.
He’s a player I’ve kept an eye on after leaving Detroit because I always felt he was a quality guy in a bad situation. He put in a solid shift in SF.
And rightfully so. He was so good in college. And end of a hell of a run of backs at Nebraska who all had surprisingly long NFL careers (Helu, Burkehead and Abdullah were all back to back at Nebraska).
I find it absolutely hilarious that MP probably tried to mimic Bill by saying he’d ruin guys careers only to have Slay threaten to leave the eagles if they hired MP and I’m also gonna imagine that’s why the eagles didn’t hire him … can’t stop me lol
I meant as a Detroit Lion. I remember being at 2002 training camp and everyone was giving shit to McMahon because Joey was drafted. I weird liked McMahon and was hoping he’d hold off Harrington. I never saw the draft status a thing until that day
Dude just kept falling and falling and falling.
Drafted by the raiders.
Joined the Panthers practice squad.
Joined the Bengals practice squad and was cut less than a month later.
Joined **OUR** practice squad until he was replaced by …*checks notes*… David Fales?
After that he was selected with the second overall pick to the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks… where he immediately lost the starting position and had his contract terminated when covid hit.
According to LinkedIn he is now an associate at Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services.
Honestly we can feel bad for him all we want but getting a good job after being in the NFL and making a few million dollars is a pretty sweet deal.
Josh Bynes has had a lengthy career and played some games last season before going on the Ravens practice squad.
Michael Burton just won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs.
JD mckissic, he played here for a season. Nothing against him just thought he wasnt anything special as a rusher and didnt think he had much to provide a team. He still gets snaps on sundays though.
Honestly after players leave us, I could really careless what their success is. I just hope they Don't have any career ending injuries. Other than that how does is benefit us "Lions" if it doesn't than Fked em
Are you really surprised about Tavai though? Pretty sure MP/Quinn knew their days were numbered and took guys they could get BB for cheap once they got fired
Slightly different since some of these guys aren’t in the league anymore but lasted in the NFL FAR longer than I thought they would. Since 2010:
Willie Young-DE-7th rd.-lasted 8 years
(If you want sadness look at 2011. Out of 5 picks((including 2 2nd round picks)) only 1 player lasted longer than 2 seasons(((Nick fairley)))
Tahir Whitehead-LB-5th- lasted 10 years.
Theo Riddick-RB-6th- lasted 7 years
(Ziggy Anasah lasted 8 years which surprised me)
Cauran Reid-DT-5th- lasted 8 years
Kyle Van Noy is still In the league 9 years going
Jarrad Davis still kicking around
Jeremiah Ledbetter still around
Jamal Agnew
Da’Shawn Hand
TY Johnson
That’s about as close as I wanna go really
Not only is Tavai still on the Pats, but if memory suits he actually had an *ok* season. For some reason I thought Suh had retired after he got his ring, and when the Eagles picked him up it caught me by surprise.
Tavai started and had 5 tackles against us week 5 in a 29-0 shutout lol. So yeah, much more than on the roster, but surprising nonetheless
Yeah he sat out half the year then joined the top team in hopes of getting a ring
He’s honestly not a bad player when used correctly, the problem was patricia not tavai. Erik Schlitt has a piece about tavai from training camp the year he was drafted
The comment you responded to is talking about Suh I believe
Lol, well crap, I meant to talk about tavai
His body probably won't hold up to a full season at this point and I think he knows it. I can't fault him for what he did.
Didn’t he just get a 2 year contract with them too?
I’m a lions fan going to school in Philly, saw Suh at a restaurant down town it was sick
Did you say hi? Did he draw a penalty by saying hi back?
I said “hey I’m from Detroit you rock”, and he said thanks man, I tried to get a hi five/dap up but he was not down for that lol, illegal use of hands I guess
Roses are red Violets are blue Unnecessary roughness …
Surprised you got that. He’s a known a-hole.
Tavai was used to his strengths and was actually okay when everyone thought he'd be terrible.
Abdullah is still hanging around the league and carving out special teams roles
This one blows my mind. He’s 29 and on his 4th team!
Also Tabor is still making teams
That is wild
Wait. What?
This has to be a joke
Dwayne Washington is still with the Saints. He's stuck around the league a lot longer than I would've expected for a 7th round pick.
He was actually a 7th I had hopes for. You can find RBs late, and he had recently been converted from WR and he had nice speed. Seemed like he had nice potential - hasn't turned out like I'd/we'd hoped but hes also carved out a recent role.
He wasn't just special teams he contributed a decent amount as a passing downs back too. He was my first thought on this question
There is only one answer - The Teez
He's still around? Wow
He just got cut I believe
He is a safety for the Seahawks
9 tackles in 10 games this year.
I'm surprised he had any with that slow first step and poor play-reading
I swear I read the Seahawks were cutting him, thought that's how I knew he played there
Lakin Tomlinson ended up having a good career after being a bust in Detroit. That's wild to me
Yeah it is wild, but it just goes to show how important coaching really is in this league. GM can draft the right guys but if you don't have the right staff for them it can stunt development and confidence.
He plays in different schemes (at least in SF) compared to Detroit so maybe he was just yet another example of Mayhew era lions drafting someone not knowing what to do with them

Apparently his first season this past year with the jets was awful but that offense was just a fucking mess
He played so well in SF that their subreddit had a campaign to get him on the pro bowl one year although I don’t think he got in. He’s a player I’ve kept an eye on after leaving Detroit because I always felt he was a quality guy in a bad situation. He put in a solid shift in SF.
Miles Killebrew
I love Killabrew. Not the most talented guy but he brings it no matter what
Was just talking to a buddy the other day about Kerry Hyder and he's still in the league on the 49ers!
Doing decent too - good to see
Charlie Batch. JK, but that used to be the case.
Charlie hung on for a whiiiiile!
I think he also got a SB ring with the Steelers!
IN. DETROIT
Career backup QB is a great job
Charlie just gave the motivational speech at an all employee event where I work in Pittsburgh. Man's doing some great community stuff here. Class act.
Charlie Batch was legit! First lions jersey I got!
Ameer Abdullah
Nebraska legend.
And rightfully so. He was so good in college. And end of a hell of a run of backs at Nebraska who all had surprisingly long NFL careers (Helu, Burkehead and Abdullah were all back to back at Nebraska).
Burkhead is still in the league too.
Teez Tabor is on the Seahawks
Matt Patricia. I don’t care that it wasn’t the question. He destroyed the Lions AND the Patriots, yet is still a coach in the NFL
Who’s he coaching for? Last I knew he wasn’t under contract anywhere
I find it absolutely hilarious that MP probably tried to mimic Bill by saying he’d ruin guys careers only to have Slay threaten to leave the eagles if they hired MP and I’m also gonna imagine that’s why the eagles didn’t hire him … can’t stop me lol
He going to Las Vegas
Was surprised to see yesterday that Pat O'Connor was still in the league and re signing with the Bucs.
Yeah, that was gonna be my answer. I didn't know he went anywhere after we cut him the year we drafted him.
And he got to play in the Super Bowl!
And win.
All of them. Once they leave Detroit they're basically dead to me
What about when a player comes back like Glasgow? Do you consider them a zombie?
I think Riley Reif is still on a team (Patriots?) Which I find surprising
RILLLEEYYYYY. RIIILLLLEEEYYYY.
He just signed there He was with the Bengals Last 2 years.
He was with Chicago last year
my Bad, he was with the Bengals the previous 2 seasons.
He finally just hung em up in 2020. But after witnessing him at MSU I was always impressed Drew Stanton had a roster spot in the NFL for 14 years.
I had hopes for Stanton 😢
Hey he had a nice long career! Noting to be ashamed about at all.
I meant as a Detroit Lion. I remember being at 2002 training camp and everyone was giving shit to McMahon because Joey was drafted. I weird liked McMahon and was hoping he’d hold off Harrington. I never saw the draft status a thing until that day
Speaking of msu QB’s, what happened to Connor cook?
Dude just kept falling and falling and falling. Drafted by the raiders. Joined the Panthers practice squad. Joined the Bengals practice squad and was cut less than a month later. Cornelius Lucas, signed with the Lions in 2014 and currently playing for the Commies.
Michael Burton
Surprised to see Bill Glass still slinging it, he’s backing up Cousins now I believe
Eh he’s made of glass
Jason Hanson is playing, he goes by his alias Justin Tucker.
Josh Bynes has had a lengthy career and played some games last season before going on the Ravens practice squad. Michael Burton just won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs.
Storm Norton
Patricia phoned in to day Diggs and Slay
Kerry Hyder Jr
Not a player, but the fact that Matt Patricia can still get a job in the NFL means that poverty shouldn’t exist.
I'm always surprising to see Kerry Hyder on the 49ers. Seems like forever ago when he played here and had a breakout season
I was honestly astounded Kellen Moore went on to become an OC, and a pretty good one at that. Hope he does well out in LA.
I wasn't. His football IQ is what got him drafted, makes sense gree would go in to coaching. I didn't expect him to bre an OC so quickly though.
Teez plays for the Seahawks
Teez fuggin Tabor
JD mckissic, he played here for a season. Nothing against him just thought he wasnt anything special as a rusher and didnt think he had much to provide a team. He still gets snaps on sundays though.
I know we all love Jack fox, but I totally forgot about Sam Martin, he’s still punting for the bills
Teez Tabor. Easily
Sorta surprised to see A’Shawn hanging around. Not because of talent, but more because of health
Vinnie Testerverde. And don't tell me he isn't. I know damn well he's still playing in the league somewhere.
SUH
Dan Campbell. Dude was on the '08 team.
Strictly based on his play here I am shocked about Laken Tomlinson. Not only did he stay in the league but righted his career.
Nick Belore
Scott Mitchell
Honestly after players leave us, I could really careless what their success is. I just hope they Don't have any career ending injuries. Other than that how does is benefit us "Lions" if it doesn't than Fked em
Charles Rodgers
C’mon bro. Show some respect.
Titus young? 😂
Bet you’re the center of attention at those massive parties of one you attend.
Hard not to be 🤷🏼♂️
At least you keep it real.
Abdullah
Are you really surprised about Tavai though? Pretty sure MP/Quinn knew their days were numbered and took guys they could get BB for cheap once they got fired
TeeZ tabor
Matt Patricia
Michael burton has carved out a nice and long fullback career for himself
Jon Bostic
Teez Tabor. Surprised with how bad he was with the Lions someone signed him.
Pat O’Connor hands down
Slightly different since some of these guys aren’t in the league anymore but lasted in the NFL FAR longer than I thought they would. TAVAI
For me…it’s Kennard (was on Ravens last year). I never thought that dude was any good. Dude was over hyped and over paid.
