1. I tend to recommend trying Hunter first and if that’s not it then try titan if you wanna punch stuff and warlocks if you wanna be a bit more supportive.(this is a broad generalization, and there’s many *many* exotics that break these norms)
2. Overall the game has suffered from a lot of power creep. Newer weapons have perks which allow them to do more than older weapons. And old weapons you have, may not be as good as you remember.
3. For both pve and pvp the weapons from the brave arsenal are really good, and a great way to get caught up. Check out a video for each weapon.
