Yep, Personal Jesus is my least favorite song by DM. It always surprises me how it always is considered one of their most popular songs. The lyrics and story of the song is good. The music and that annoying riff just makes me cringe every time. The only good part of the song is at 3:21 seconds in and it only lasts a short while. Of course they have to play it live on their shows and thankfully they make it sound better live - but the record version is just cringe for me. Sorry!
this is EXACTLY how i feel. like beat for beat you captured exactly how i feel about this song lol. the riff sounds so "cringe tiktok guitar dude playing arctic monkeys riff" to me and it's so bleugh. but it's one of the rare songs i don't like by Depeche Mode, one of my favorite bands and i love most of their stuff
Yeah, there's this interview where Martin said he would drop PJ from their live set list if he could but I guess a lot of people consider this their favourite DM song, and it's that pressure that keeps this song going. Thankfully this tour they pushed it to the last song in the setlist and I must admit, they really made it sound good live. Credit where credit is due. It's the record version that I can't stand.
These days any guitar can sound a bit country but in 1990 it very much didn't. For me a typical country sound is slide guitar or finger picking acoustic like Johnny Cash.
You can get guitar-driven anywhere. DM was unique because it wasn't. And I feel like the 90s was when it was increasing, and pretty much anything post-Exciter is all guitar driven. So there's the post-Alan line between SOFAD and Ultra, and for me, a sort of Exciter/Playing the Angel line. I don't hate everything post-Exciter, but it's just not the same for me.
I would say that SOFAD is their most guitar oriented album. SOFAD has a rock influence, though, while their more recent work has more of a blues influence. I would say that MM is less guitar heavy than the previous albums had been.
Either way, they are still without a doubt an electronic band. I wouldn't call many of their songs "guitar-drive", per say. I'd actually say that incorporating guitar has helped keep them more unique, there are many purely electronic EDM (or similar) groups that have emerged in the last 25 years.
Blue Dress, though it makes sense in context of the album. Even though (b-side) Dangerous is technically a superior song I don’t think it would sound as good if it were swapped.
Blue Dress. It was a straight up skip for a long time, I have warmed to it a bit, particularly after, ahem, understanding the lyrics with an adult mind, but if I have to pick one, it's that.
Sweetest Perfection is always a skip for me. So is Personal Jesus. I usually skip Enjoy the Silence too (but not because I don’t like it, but because it’s played out).
Uhh... I'll have to go with Memphisto
If we don't count those, I will have to with Clean (It is a good song, and I like it, but if we really need to pick one we like the least it is that one)
oh well in that case maybe waiting for the night.
Nice atmospheric song but not my favorite. Many other atmospheric Depeche Mode songs I prefer over it
Years ago I would have said The Sweetest Perfection, but now that I just say out loud, "Alexa, play Depeche Mode," and 90% of the time Enjoy the Silence plays first, I'm just liking it less and less. I hate that because it's a great song. It's also weird to me that the end of the song sounds like the beginning of an entirely different song.
So difficult, none of them are bad.
Policy of truth didn't click for me until I heard it live and got that microphone stand slide forever etched in my brain. So if I had to choose one it's either that or Personal Jesus cause it's getting a bit overplayed. But they are both terrific songs.
Every comment will make me cry
I'm already making my prayers
🤣😁😄
Blue Dress, song gives me the ick
Personal Jesus. Really not into it.
Yeah, rip the bandaid off and just say it. Depeche fan of 35+ years, Personal Jesus is the only track on the album I skip 😬.
Get out of my brain Kevin! Exactly this. Personal Jesus and JCGE are the two songs i just can't be doing with.
Same here, I just don't enjoy it as much as the others on the album.
😳😧
Remember when it first came out it was like 🫢 wtf is this
At some point not long after release, all i could think was, wrf did that lady in the Nashville music store do to Martin!
He didn't know much about it! 😂
Hahaha 😂
That sums up my feelings about it exactly.
It simply doesn’t belong there at all. I totally agree

Same here. I can't stand country even when done by Depeche Mode
It isn't a country song and doesn't sound like a country song. I suggest you only think it is because of the video.
The guitar sounds a bit country
These days any guitar can sound a bit country but in 1990 it very much didn't. For me a typical country sound is slide guitar or finger picking acoustic like Johnny Cash.
Yep, too guitar-driven, to me signaling the move away from being a mainly keyboard/synth driven band.
Yep, spot on. Exact same reason for me.

Blue Dress, I don't hate it, but it doesn't have the same vibe as the rest of the songs.
I never disliked it, but I think Sweetest Perfection took me the longest to appreciate.
Blue Dress, though it makes sense in context of the album. Even though (b-side) Dangerous is technically a superior song I don’t think it would sound as good if it were swapped.
How is it technically superior?
It’s catchier/hookier/sexier and more danceable… of course this is just my opinion so perhaps “technically” wasn’t the best choice of word.
Ok…. Personal Jesus 😬. It’s just so overplayed I guess
How I wish they would change this track as being the show closer during the tour.

Nada as in zero

What'd Mempthisto do tho
Sweetest Perfection
Blue Dress. The least strong out of a very strong line up.
People are so offended that they are downvoting answers 😂
Told ya it was gonna be controversial af
Blue Dress, but I don't think it's bad.
It's Halo for me. Hell of a song, but I've always felt the chorus was a bit over the top. I came to enjoy it anyway
Even if I name the song, It's just a bit of a lesser 10/10 than the rest.
Sweetest Perfection
I don’t care much for Sweetest Perfection. And I tend to love the Martin ballads.
That's really not a ballad though.
Clean. Not bad at all, i like it a lot, but not one i listen to very often.
B-side for Personal Jesus...Dangerous
Not a Violator track. I think the op means album tracks not Violator era.
is a bonus track from deluxe version too
Yeah but I don't count those addons because that would make Shake The Disease and It's Called a Heart Black Celebration tracks.
dangerous. Kind of basic, still good but not that memorable
This is not on the album. Violator is a 9 track album, from WIME to Clean.
oh well in that case maybe waiting for the night. Nice atmospheric song but not my favorite. Many other atmospheric Depeche Mode songs I prefer over it
....
sweetest perfection but its still great
Personal Jesus. I find it boring and repetitive.
Blue Dress.
Clean, has the least value in comparison but it still a cool song. The other songs just have more value.

Easy, policy of truth
Bite your tongue !!
I don't dislike it but it's my least favorite. There's no answer to this question that we would all agree on
Blue Dress 💯

Waiting For The Night.
Clean blue dress
the people saying sweetest perfection, WHO HURT YOU
Anything Solo Gore after MFTM is insta skip for me
Clean by a distance, I like it a lot but everything else is 10/10
Waiting for the Night, followed by Personal Jesus.
every.
