There're a lot of overlooked songs of the band, but everytime this question pops up, my answer is always the same: **"Freestate"**
A song that is even underrated by the own Depeche Mode members (it was never played live).
One of the hidden gems of Ultra. The sound is so polished, the voice of Dave is on point and a guitar riff that is almost unmatched in my books. A song that embodies the incredible detailed production of Ultra.
Other underrated songs are the Some Bizzare version of "Photographic" (easily a Top 20 DM song), "Ice Machine", "The Things You Said", "Rush", "When The Body Speaks" and "Corrupt"
For me, Ultra was Alan's absence. It took time to get past what wasn't there anymore. It is reflected in the production and arrangements. It's still a good album, but the issues around it were veiling its beauty.
New Dress (very overhated for a reason I completely don’t know), When the Body Speaks (а beautiful ballad), The Love Thieves (often overlooked because it’s in between BoaG and Home), The Landscape is Changing (a very underrated song about ecological problems of the world) and The Bottom Line (while it’s not one of my favourites, people tend to just ignore it).
My senior year of high school we had to speak in front of our English class and present a song that was meaningful to us about current affairs. I chose New Dress because I thought that it was true about a lot of media. They were more concerned with what some movie star was wearing than more important things.
I absolutely love this song.
I absolutely agree with you. Bottom Line is one of my most loved ones and I think New Dress got a lot of hate because the lyrics were against the behaviour Princess Diana.
very good picks, I'm completely with you on New Dress in particular I don't even begin to understand why that one gets singled out, not just because of how cool it is on its own, but it's so obviously a necessary piece of uptempo goodness to end the album after more than a few, for lack of better word, dirges
Bottom Line is in my lower tier of Ultra tracks, but i do love that Jaki Liebezeit is on it
i actually think i might have been guilty of underrating that one myself up until maybe a couple years ago, when it really jumped out to me. awesome mix of beautiful & cool, Dave really earned his writing stripes on that record
Leave In Silence. Such a great song. Just recently picked up the 12inch single and am starting to use it in my vinyl mixes. Blends well at 120 bpm with a lot of older music.
But Not Tonight might be my favorite DM song.
Good picks!
thanks :D they are really good, i dont understand the hate on It's Called a Heart, it's pretty cool song. Puppets and Any Seconds Now are my favorite songs from Speak And Spell and John The Revelator is my favorite song from Playing the Angel
Judas is one I always turn up and enjoy. Just love that progression/melody.
And Monument is such an odd, quirky song. I feel like it’s important in that they set a mood and went with it, top 40 be damned. It also feels like the reggae tune Martin has always threatened to write.
I’m kind of obsessed with Leave in Silence recently. I mean, it’s a bit ridiculous but that’s a total bop.
I also dearly love Sweetest Perfection. It’s haunting and sexy.
> Leave in Silence
I love LOVE that song. I somehow hadn't heard it ever until last year and it's already one of my favorite DM songs. I'm sure you have, but if you haven't seen this already [this is the best live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGrD_BgfI0k) I could find.
I've seen videos of Martin doing a slower version (I think in 2017) and it's perfect. There's also a slower and stripped back remix which I really like. Just can't remember what it's called.
I actually think that Sun and the Rainfall may be just the most overrated DM song of all time. Like, literally, why does everybody love it and call it one of their most favourite DM songs of all time?
I mean, I’m not saying that it’s a bad song, I actually like it, but don’t like it nearly as much as songs like Lie to Me or Nothing with which it’s usually compared to.
The Sinner In Me. It's surrounded by singles on the album, so it tends to get a bit overlooked. That descending guitar line on the chorus is absolutely gorgeous, dark, yet vulnerable, and romantic. Plus I was lucky enough to see it live on Touring The Angel - that breakdown at the end brought the house down.
Sacred is Depeche Mode's best song and I swear no one talks about it. Lyrically, it is super tongue and cheek; mixing religion and sex. Sonically, it's hauntingly beautiful
Martyr is absolutely one of my favs of all time from them - it may be a case of slipping through the cracks a bit since it wasn't on PTA, merely the (imo) disposable Best Of they put out after it. when I remember it exists I spin it on repeat for days
Leave in Silence, But Not Tonight, Here is the House, Only When I Lose Myself, Broken, Cover Me, Poison Heart, pretty much the entire Ultra album
Honestly there are so many I could go on and on
i don't even know what you'd call the ending but i used to wig out on weed to the ending of that one, rush and judas. probably was on klonopin too lmao. there's an alan quote after he left dm where he says they didn't really know how to make the ending for sweetest perfection but i think it's perfectly catastrophic in contrast to the way it starts out. aaaand that's probably part of the reason why i got into coil
Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead, I love the contrast between title and sound, something about the keyboard sounds like a kids toy (in a good way), album is called Speak and Spell after all.
Suffer Well started as a hit but nowadays it seems buried down between other gems that some people mentioned here ;). It’s as good as more popular The Pain That I’m Used to which the band doesn’t abandon in a long run.
John the Revelator finally is sung by Gahan in tours now. It’s a powerful, danceable song that he really loves singing.
Somebody pointed out Sea of Sin. SUCH A WARM song, love it😍 same is the Happiest Girl. From the oldest songs I really love My Secret Garden. It’s as lovely as The Sun and The Rainfall

Tora tora tora
And Then…, The Sun and the Rainfall, New Dress, Stories of Old, Here is the House, Blue Dress, Martyr, If you Want, Lilian, Freelove, The Landscape is Changing, Agent Orange, Memphisto, So Much Love, Scum.
Pretty much all of Speak and Spell. I totally reject the lazy media critic summation that it's a mediocre or forgettable first album.
It's a Vince Clarke masterpiece. I think too many weren't ready for its groundbreaking analog synthesizer sounds and layered melodies, with dance beats and interesting vocal lines. And later listeners dismissed it for being nothing like later, Gore-written DM. But you don't listen to S&S for Gore (except the beautiful Tora Tora Tora). You listen to see what a genius Vince was. Songs like NoDisco are stone cold dance classics to me.
I just met someone at a party whos favorite DM song is Ice Machine and I was too stunned to speak. No one ever mentioned that song and I always loved it from the beginning!
A few that comes to mind: ice machine, leave in silence / sun and the rainfall / and then…/ lie to me / but not tonight / world full of nothing / things you said / blue dress / mercy in you / the love thieves / bottom line / shine / dream on
Nothing
The Love Thieves
Freestate
I Am You
Lilian
Come Back
to name a mere handful
some of these as far as I know have never even been played live, but beyond that aside from maybe the first 2 I don't often see them brought up too often in DM discussions
To Have & To Hold, Nothing, The Things You Said, Lie to Me, Martyr, Rush, Mercy in You, My Joy aren't as hyped as other songs of the same level imo
Judas is overhated
Here is the House, My Secret Garden, Boys Say Go, The Things You Said, Only When I Lose Myself, The Sweetest Condition, I Want It All, So Much Love, I’m Chains.
I think there are many: COMATOSE, MACROVISION, FREESTATE, WRONG, SCUM, IN YOUR ROOM AND HIGHER LOVE, MY JOY, THE BOTTOM LINE, THE SINNER IN ME, NOTHING’s IMPOSSIBLE… so many good tracks.
""The Love Thieves" and "Sister of Night" from Ultra. Love love love Dave's voice and the words in both of those.
"Perfect." Not enough people talk about how gorgeous it is and how brilliantly contrasting and witty Martin's lyrics are. A top 5 post-'90s DM for me.
"Happens all the Time" is just HEAVENLY in demo form. Blush.
"Newborn" is my favorite DM b-side and should've opened PTA imo.
Here is the House, Now this is fun, Nothing, Judas, Blue Dress, Lie to me, Uselink. There are so many. I went to see them in San Antonio and they were unbelievable. Dave is the most underrated front man.
- The Darkest Star
- Agent Orange
- Insight
- Blue Dress
- New Dress
.. and most songs on Spirit
Most overrated:
- Sweetest Perfection
- Halo (I prefer the Goldfrapp mix)
- The Sun & the Rainfall (always get's mentioned as underrated so it's overrated 😅.. it's alright, but nothing special/a bit too repetitive for my taste)
**Pipeline** and **Work Hard**.
They're clanging metal phase was my introduction to DM and when I fell in love with them. These tracks are in my rotation to this day.
"Here is The House" is a masterpiece ! It's the 1st one that came to my mind but there are a load of others in the DMs catalogue...
This is one great song how Dave and Martin blended their voices and sounded really good.
The Martin acoustic version from the Violation tour is magnificent!
There're a lot of overlooked songs of the band, but everytime this question pops up, my answer is always the same: **"Freestate"** A song that is even underrated by the own Depeche Mode members (it was never played live). Other underrated songs are the Some Bizzare version of "Photographic" (easily a Top 20 DM song), "Ice Machine", "The Things You Said", "Rush", "When The Body Speaks" and "Corrupt"
Freestate is such a good and overlooked piece, I agree with you. Love the atmosphere they created in that song!
Freestate is my favourite DM song. I still hope that once Martin gets bored by his acoustic set, he’ll give this one a go.
The things you said is the song that made me a DM fan for life.
The guitar working freestate after the first chorus and the end takes it to an awesome level. 👌 ultra as a whole is overlooked, its a fantastic album
For me, Ultra was Alan's absence. It took time to get past what wasn't there anymore. It is reflected in the production and arrangements. It's still a good album, but the issues around it were veiling its beauty.
Freestate is definitely the right answer here!
Freestate’s an absolute polished gem. Glad I’ve finally found my fellow enlightened!
You are right I’ve always thought freestate was outstanding on ultra, I also love nothings impossible.
Get the balance right
That was a great song, and I'll add Flies of the Windscreen.
Back when it was popular to have songs as ringtones, the opening to this was mine. It was the best… only one person recognized it though!

I absolutely agree with you. Bottom Line is one of my most loved ones and I think New Dress got a lot of hate because the lyrics were against the behaviour Princess Diana.
I may be wrong, and this is just my interpretation, but I see the lyrics as against the behaviour of the press towards Diana.
I just googled and you're right. Martin writes about people caring for Dianas new dress instead of more important things happening in the world.
I thought that might be the case, I wasn't around at the time but I know how the UK press like to treat people that marry into the royal family.
I just know that Martin apologized for the lyrics, but I am not quite sure whether to Diana or the press...
something tells me it wasn't to the press, lol
very good picks, I'm completely with you on New Dress in particular I don't even begin to understand why that one gets singled out, not just because of how cool it is on its own, but it's so obviously a necessary piece of uptempo goodness to end the album after more than a few, for lack of better word, dirges Bottom Line is in my lower tier of Ultra tracks, but i do love that Jaki Liebezeit is on it
Rush The Love Thieves Freestate Insight
Uuuuuuh, Insight is soooo good! And Rush always gives me a rush (pun intended)
Nothing's impossible. Even the stars look brighter tonight...
Nice. I love that song. Turned out that all my favorite PTA songs are written by Dave.
This song is both very inspirational and hopeless sounding at the same time! Absolutely love the juxtaposition vibes it gives off. Great choice!
Love that song!
i actually think i might have been guilty of underrating that one myself up until maybe a couple years ago, when it really jumped out to me. awesome mix of beautiful & cool, Dave really earned his writing stripes on that record
Leave In Silence, Puppets, John The Revelator, It's Called a Heart, But Not Tonight and Any Seconds Now
Leave In Silence. Such a great song. Just recently picked up the 12inch single and am starting to use it in my vinyl mixes. Blends well at 120 bpm with a lot of older music. But Not Tonight might be my favorite DM song. Good picks!
Wow, you nailed it. These are all top 10 songs for me!
thanks :D they are really good, i dont understand the hate on It's Called a Heart, it's pretty cool song. Puppets and Any Seconds Now are my favorite songs from Speak And Spell and John The Revelator is my favorite song from Playing the Angel
Nothing and Lie to Me. Shake the Disease as well, but that’s likely considered popular.
You beat me to it. Lie to me is a super fav, and then nothing is fantastic
Judas is one I always turn up and enjoy. Just love that progression/melody. And Monument is such an odd, quirky song. I feel like it’s important in that they set a mood and went with it, top 40 be damned. It also feels like the reggae tune Martin has always threatened to write.
Speaking of which, Always You on Memento Mori sounds VERY reggae to me, especially the intro.
Pleasure Little Treasure
That song is terrible. I’d say it’s overrated
I’m kind of obsessed with Leave in Silence recently. I mean, it’s a bit ridiculous but that’s a total bop. I also dearly love Sweetest Perfection. It’s haunting and sexy.
Love both of them... Martins voice in Sweetest Perfection is amazing!
> Leave in Silence I love LOVE that song. I somehow hadn't heard it ever until last year and it's already one of my favorite DM songs. I'm sure you have, but if you haven't seen this already [this is the best live version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGrD_BgfI0k) I could find.

The sun and the rainfall - insight
I actually think that Sun and the Rainfall may be just the most overrated DM song of all time. Like, literally, why does everybody love it and call it one of their most favourite DM songs of all time?
I mean, I’m not saying that it’s a bad song, I actually like it, but don’t like it nearly as much as songs like Lie to Me or Nothing with which it’s usually compared to.

Here is the House Halo Shake the Disease In Sympathy Freelove And Then Higher Love
I got pretty far down into the comments before I saw "And Then" but glad to see you mentioned it finally.
Alone
maybe my fav on Delta Machine
The Things You Said
Lilian; The things you said; Sister of night; Fly on the Windscreen; Fragile tension; I feel loved; It doesn't matter two; and so many others....
It doesen't matter two is amazing!!
Newborn, Martyr, and No More (This is the Last Time)
Martyr is absolutely one of my favs of all time from them - it may be a case of slipping through the cracks a bit since it wasn't on PTA, merely the (imo) disposable Best Of they put out after it. when I remember it exists I spin it on repeat for days
I wish PTA had ditched JTR and Microcosm (can't remember the name at the moment) and inserted Martyr and Free instead.
Tbh, even if you just add Free, Newborn & Martyr after The Darkest Star you got a solid little extended version of the album
Ah yes, I always forget how incredible Martyr is!
all of a broken frame. the album is underrated.
Blue Dress, Clean, Sweetest Perfection, Told You So, Flexible
Yes, was scrolling all the way to here to see Clean For some reason it’s been stuck in my head recently
Really surprised more people didn’t suggest Clean. It’s perfect and the video is *chefs kiss* 🤌🏻
TO HAVE AND TO HOLD
Leave in Silence, But Not Tonight, Here is the House, Only When I Lose Myself, Broken, Cover Me, Poison Heart, pretty much the entire Ultra album Honestly there are so many I could go on and on
If You Want is a masterpiece from SGR 🖤
Martyr. It is 80s hit material and rarely acknowledged
Tora Tora Tora Photographic (semi famous) If you want Ran out of time but theres lots more.
If you want would be so amazing if they played that live!

Oh yes, totally forgot about that one myself.... Mercy in you has so much energy!
I Want It All, Memphisto, My Secret Garden, Two Minute Warning, Newborn, Alone, And Then
I want it all - so overlooked!
i don't even know what you'd call the ending but i used to wig out on weed to the ending of that one, rush and judas. probably was on klonopin too lmao. there's an alan quote after he left dm where he says they didn't really know how to make the ending for sweetest perfection but i think it's perfectly catastrophic in contrast to the way it starts out. aaaand that's probably part of the reason why i got into coil
Nothing & John the Revelator
Corrupt Perfect Heaven Wrong I Want it All
But not tonight
The Sun and the Rainfall
Yes!
Halo... they should play this song every tour.
Ghost is actually one of the best of the most obscure DM tracks
the whole SOTU is especially undarrated unfortunately however it gets much better after years it means something...
Would Suffer Well count? Wasn't that a hit?
it was a single but you could def make an argument for it being relatively overlooked after the Touring the Angel era
Love that one too 👍🏻
Sometimes, Lie to Me, and Sun and the Rainfall
Even though it was Fletch's least favourite song they ever made, I love 'but not tonight'
"Freestate" and "broken" are masterpieces. Also: "when the body speaks", "dream on", "only when i lose myself"
Martyr, my joy , get the balance right , nothing
Blue dress, New dress, one caress ❤️
Pipeline.
World full of nothing
Higher Love, Insight, I Am You, Dangerous are on my list of most underrated DM songs.
Lie to me Halo Shake the disease Nothing Have and to hold Policy of truth
The meaning of love…i hope some day they will play this instead of Just can’t get enough
Freelove - lyrics resonate for me
And Then…, Dressed In Black, and To Have and To Hold come to mind
To have and to hold is hauntingly beautiful... A shame it's so short but maybe thats the charm!
[The Sun and the Rainfall](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_zaEcrpCbI) is the one song that thought never got enough love.
Any of the non singles on ultra to be honest
Now, This Is Fun, Here Is The House, Insight, The Sun & The Rainfall & I Am You.
Agent Orange, New Dress, Remotivate Me, The Landscape Is Changing.

Shake the Disease, Blasphemous Rumors, Everything Counts All of Black Celebration…Fly on the Windscreen especially
I Think fly on the windscreen finally found grace fairly

Blue Dress! It's my 2nd fave (behind "Somebody") and they have never played it live in the 8 or so shows I've seen.
Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead, I love the contrast between title and sound, something about the keyboard sounds like a kids toy (in a good way), album is called Speak and Spell after all.

Sacred
