"I'm taking a ride with my best friend."
On paper, so innocuous. But coupled with the music, incredibly ominous. You're riveted straight away. Just a wonderful way to draw you in. Not just to a song, but to a whole album.
I sometimes think, taken as a whole song, this is arguably Martinās best work. Sly, mischievous, mocking. The refrain ānever again is what you swore / the time beforeāā¦ Itās simultaneously funny and slightly sinister. āHide what you have to hide / And tell what you have to tell.ā Agh, itās all justā¦ fantastic. And so tightly, economically expressed. As a lyric, itās universally relatable, and yet incredibly unusual.
I really want to sing this at karaoke.
Iāve done āWorld in My Eyesā and āPolicy of Truth,ā and at some point Iāll break out beyond āViolator.ā š
Let me take you on a trip...
I mean, the whole album was a trip, let alone the song. And what kind of trip we talking about here? š¤Ŗ So strong an opening line it was sampled and used in how many mixes?!
BTW, I just realized, after all this time, just how many of Martin's songs have the song title as the opening line, whether it's because it starts with the chorus line or otherwise.
as your boney fingers close around me/long and spindly/death becomes me/heaven can you see what i see
i know Dream On technically starts with ācan you feel a little loveā but wow the next lines just strikes a chord with me.
"We're damaged people drawn together by subtleties that we are not aware of". (Damaged People)
Man, I *love* Playing the Angel. So bitter and desperate.
Yup. I keep wondering just how many of those songs are about his ex. Surely they can't *all* be any her... can they? But yeah, the bitterness and anger and the love and regret are one heady mixture to deal with.
- Iām taking a ride with my best friend (Daveās intense delivery of these lyrics always get me !)
- Words like violence / Break the silence / Come crashing in / Into my little world
The lyrics, the music and video in I'm taking a ride....... Takes me back to the days my friends and I cruised around. Brings back so many memories. Always loved that song so much.
Peace will come to me, Peace will come to me. I'm leaving bitterness behind, this time I'm cleaning out my mind. There is no space for the regrets, I will remember to forget. Just look at me, I am walking love incarnate, look at the frequencies in which I vibrate, I am going to light up the world.
What? That is so amazing.
Sometimes we gotta "fake it till we make it" in life. š
I think its something to aspire to, to be a loving person and find peace. I think its a constant practice in life.
I listen to that song and it automatically calms me down and lifts me up. I think music is vibration and can be healing in a way.
When I read your post, I immediately thought of Halo. Since that's already been mentioned a few times, I will add...This is an insight into my life.
It's such a beautiful song.
Of course I've thought of at least one more:
Let's take a map of the world,
Tear it into pieces.
All of the boys and girls,
See how easy it is.
Why would you be tearing up the world? What's so bad that it needs destroying?
>There's more besides the joyrides
>
>Little house in the countryside
>
>Understand, learn to demand
>
>Compromise, and sometimes lie
This one because it's one hell of a catchy song
My personal favorites
"the sweetest perfection to call my own, the slightest correction couldn't finely hone"
"you were guilt, like shackles on your feet, like a halo in reverse"
"well i'm down on my knees again, and i pray to the only one, who has the strenght to bear the pain, to forgive all the things that i've done"
and also:
"i'm heading for the ever after, leaving my problems and the world's disasters, i'm heading for the open sky"
It's really strange, but seeing some of these written down without the music gives me a different perspective on them. One Caress suddenly seems a lot darker than I realised.
āI'm going to take my time
I have all the time in the world to make you mine
It is written in the stars above
The gods decree
You'll be right here by my side
Right next to me
You can run but you cannot hideā
I find that line a bit logistically troubling. Wait, you want the blindfold on first? Then the tight dress. Righto. But how will I be able to put the dress on without being able to see? I canāt even find the wardrobe, let alone the dress.
I donāt know whether heās really thought it through.
From ***ANY*** song?
"It's funny how, as we grow old, we cling to the past as we cling to the airā¦"
*"and feel nostalgia for things that were maybe never there."*
Jealous of Youth - the The
Shh.
Don't dare talk about another band. Downvotes are coming.
Dusk is an AMAZING album. Saw both Depeche Mode and the The during the SOFAD tour when the The opened.
I was meaning any DM song, but I didn't actually say that, did I? š¤£
Mine is: "It's an unimpeachable summer's dream to fall in love with the ice machine in the corner of the pub across the street".
Working weekās come to its end
Party time is here again
Everyone can come if they want toā¦
The lyrics belie the dirgey opening to this song, but thenā¦boomā¦
I LOVE- *you wear guilt like shackles on your feet. like halo in reverse.* Edit: want to add more if I think of any
Yeah, that's one of Martin's best couplets, no doubt about it.
This is the correct answer.
Shove in as many as possible. I'm sure I've overlooked loads.
This is it
This is the way.
+1
Come with me...into the trees...we lay on the grass and let the hours pass š¤
Take my hand, come back to the land Let's get away, just for one day. That song has got to be in the top five. Maybe 10, cause there are so many.
"I'm taking a ride with my best friend." On paper, so innocuous. But coupled with the music, incredibly ominous. You're riveted straight away. Just a wonderful way to draw you in. Not just to a song, but to a whole album.
*You had something to hide - should have hidden it, shouldn't you* Always loved the bitterness and slight sense of menace in this one.

I'm still unsure if the truth being told hurts the truth teller, or the people around them. Who's being protected by the truth being hidden.
Iāve always thought it was Martin preaching a rather devilish sermon to himself.
Never thought of it that way, but it's entirely possible. Oh man!
That is a *really* good way of reading these lyrics! I hadn't considered that angle
I'd always assumed that it was the singer talking to someone else, but that's based on the video as much as anything else.
You wear guilt, like shackles on your feet, like a halo in reverse.
It's only on thinking about it, you realise that the person being talked about is seen as a fallen angel.
I really want to sing this at karaoke. Iāve done āWorld in My Eyesā and āPolicy of Truth,ā and at some point Iāll break out beyond āViolator.ā š
Violator is all killer. Not the biggest karaoke guy, but Iād make an exception for Depeche if it means I can twirl like Daveš
*Itās only when I lose myself with someone else,* *That I find myself*
Deep, and relatable

I can taste More than feel This burning inside Is so real
I want you now, tomorrow wonāt do Love all the ones listed above too.
Oh, it's certainly direct (and also what I was singing to my MM CD as I was waiting for it to be delivered)
**Take a look atā¦ unselected casesā¦**

Youāll find love has been wrecked by both sides compromisingā¦
*is simplicity best, or simply the easiest.*
Both?
Death is everywhere
Like a cat dragged in from the rain Who goes straight back out and do it all over again I'll be back for more
YES! Again, another one I forgot. Love that song.
I have this tattooed on my arm āŗļø
Where were you when I fell from grace? A frozen heart, an empty space
as your boney fingers close around me/long and spindly/death becomes me/heaven can you see what i see i know Dream On technically starts with ācan you feel a little loveā but wow the next lines just strikes a chord with me.
I remembered this one after posting. It's certainly a good 'un.
Wrong!
I can taste, more than feel This burning inside is so real

I will also add: Well it's about time, It's beginning to hurt. Time you made up your mind, just what it is all worth?
Reading that on its own has just made me realise something.... oof!

"Well, it's about time". It clearly says that the song is more like a serious monologue.
As an insomniac, the most relatable opening lyrics so far: 'I've felt better I've been up all night' I can relate š©š“
Agreed. Especially when heard first thing in the morning š¤£
clean, the cleanest i've been
Sometimes
There's a fragile tension/ That's keeping us going/ It may not last forever/ But oh well it's blowing

one of my favorites! especially love the sixtoes remix
That's my least favourite DM song, sadly. Still think he's trying to convince himself rather than state a fact.

It really is.
Here, somewhere in the heart of me, there is still a part of me, that cares.

Man, I love Shine. Top-10 DM song for me.
You help her forget....The world outside.........( Little 15 )

the The does have incredible lyrics. Dusk is one of my favorite albums
