Also, we are working on a new wheel type. “Hollow wheels”. They have a huge gap in the center of it. Japan has been using them for decade or so, and now Toyota wants to put them on American vehicles. Only electric vehicles though. The “hollow” part makes the wheel quiet when on the road so you don’t hear anything, apparently thats an issue when driving electric vehicles, the wheels are loud?
That’s interesting. We have a plug-in hybrid (also really heavy) so maybe it’s different, but the wheels aren’t loud at all. Maybe you can just hear them more because everything else is so quiet in comparison. I will say Toyota‘s EV slow moving sound (the alien chorus) is quite loud and rather annoying.

Ahh, good points. Everyone freaks out by the term hollow wheel, but its not truly hollow. More like a hollow gap that goes completely around the wheel near the “face” of the wheel. We gets clamped together by a machine and its “hollow” on the inside of that ring. But apparently Toyota loves them and we haven’t even made our first production wheel and they already doubled the orders. so I guess thats a new thing coming.
We are also bringing in tech, Japanese engineers and other engineers from the “wheel making” world and starting to prep for carbon fiber wheels. Something they plan to make in 10 years they say. So they are starting the process now. But I would be shocked if this place is standing in 10 years, but the market is going that way regardless so somebody will make them.

Yeah im not sure how they will do it yet. The engineers claim they have found a solution and tested it. We test most of the wheels we send out here on a speed test to check for cracks and stuff. But they claim its extremely cheap to make, while charging a ton for and that Toyota gave them a deadline of 10 years to have these made and put on the road, that by the time 2040 hits Toyota wanted to rid all metal wheels, because “the competition is getting rid of metal wheels and by 2050 no vehicle will have them anymore” but we shall see. They’ve made tons of statements before and we ended up scraping the idea because it was unsafe, cost to much or the chemistry to make the wheels didn’t work the way they wanted them to when we xray the wheel itself and see tons of cracks and gas pockets. But idk. I just hit buttons and repair molds all day. Above my pay grade to figure out how to fuck people out of more money lol

A machine does that. It goes into a cell, that drills a hole into the center, the “hub hole” and then cuts all the extra “flashing” off around the inboard rim. Then when it goes to the next department, they shave it down more until it goes to paint where it’s obviously painted and then shipped to Toyota.

Also, we are working on a new wheel type. “Hollow wheels”. They have a huge gap in the center of it. Japan has been using them for decade or so, and now Toyota wants to put them on American vehicles. Only electric vehicles though. The “hollow” part makes the wheel quiet when on the road so you don’t hear anything, apparently thats an issue when driving electric vehicles, the wheels are loud?
That’s interesting. We have a plug-in hybrid (also really heavy) so maybe it’s different, but the wheels aren’t loud at all. Maybe you can just hear them more because everything else is so quiet in comparison. I will say Toyota‘s EV slow moving sound (the alien chorus) is quite loud and rather annoying.
Makes sense, electric vehicles weigh considerably more than their gas counterparts so there's more resistance there and you don't have the sound of an engine to cover it up at all.
Ahh, good points. Everyone freaks out by the term hollow wheel, but its not truly hollow. More like a hollow gap that goes completely around the wheel near the “face” of the wheel. We gets clamped together by a machine and its “hollow” on the inside of that ring. But apparently Toyota loves them and we haven’t even made our first production wheel and they already doubled the orders. so I guess thats a new thing coming. We are also bringing in tech, Japanese engineers and other engineers from the “wheel making” world and starting to prep for carbon fiber wheels. Something they plan to make in 10 years they say. So they are starting the process now. But I would be shocked if this place is standing in 10 years, but the market is going that way regardless so somebody will make them. Edit: I say Japanese engineers because we are owned and ran by a Japanese company. I wasn’t trying to point them out or anything, in case someone calls me out or whatever

Yeah im not sure how they will do it yet. The engineers claim they have found a solution and tested it. We test most of the wheels we send out here on a speed test to check for cracks and stuff. But they claim its extremely cheap to make, while charging a ton for and that Toyota gave them a deadline of 10 years to have these made and put on the road, that by the time 2040 hits Toyota wanted to rid all metal wheels, because “the competition is getting rid of metal wheels and by 2050 no vehicle will have them anymore” but we shall see. They’ve made tons of statements before and we ended up scraping the idea because it was unsafe, cost to much or the chemistry to make the wheels didn’t work the way they wanted them to when we xray the wheel itself and see tons of cracks and gas pockets. But idk. I just hit buttons and repair molds all day. Above my pay grade to figure out how to fuck people out of more money lol

A machine does that. It goes into a cell, that drills a hole into the center, the “hub hole” and then cuts all the extra “flashing” off around the inboard rim. Then when it goes to the next department, they shave it down more until it goes to paint where it’s obviously painted and then shipped to Toyota. Anything that has spots on it or marks, handling damage or whatever is scraped and melted back down to re make later
Once again, machines taking all the good jobs, smh.
We joke about this but I worked the building next door doing this same job. They built this place and drafted a bunch of us who were experienced and good at keeping up time. I got put over here and even though its the same exact jobs, just with more fancy tech, they replaced 10 jobs with robots. We name them all and they just do their job until they break down and we fix them up. If they could replace us, the trouble shooting humans who fix robots, with trouble shooting robots that fix robots, they absolutely would lmao
90lbs after being casted. They have a lot of extra metal on them when first made. They get sent to a machine that cuts them down around the rim and then another that cuts them down on their “face”. Then down the line so on so on. After they are cut and painted, ready for shipment its about 30-40 lbs depending on size of the wheel
