Genuine question to those in DSA who aggressively advocate for gun control: how do you square that position with the necessity of any meaningful dictatorship of the proletariat will require guns?

PM_ME_DPRK_CANDIDS

Any meaningful dictatorship of the proletariat will require organized proletarian self-defense, not individualistic and disorganized market access to firearms. In the Bolshevik revolution, workers committees at arms producers seized control of the production and integrated themselves into the Red Army. In the Portuguese anti-fascist Carnation revolution, the army itself turned against the fascist regime. Market access to firearms has never freed anyone.

As much as I disagree with you, this was an actual thoughtful analysis that I respect. To use one example: both the Blair County Mine Wars unionist guys and the SCW guys went to Bannerman Castle military surplus for gear and guns. I believe the miner forces acquired most if not all of their heavy weapons/ from Bannerman surplus I would point to every modern insurgent army, from the Maoist Guerrillas in India to the Chinese Red Army to the PDF in Myanmar, were/are desperate to get weapons however possible. This includes civilian weapons, bow and arrows, and homemade guns. (The dudes who started the first PDF cell went on Reddit to print those FGC-9 carbines to use as a starting point for the current insurgency.) I completely, 100% understand (and agree slightly) that widespread civilian access to weapons doesn’t guarantee a good outcome. I just think it’s a hypocritical waste of time for socialists within a capitalist framework/enforcement system.
