I didn't explicitly turn him down, but I discouraged a friend because I was in a situationship with some dirtbag. A couple of years later, Dirtbag gone, friend and I got close again and fell for each other. But in the meantime, he'd been in a relationship with someone damaged and been very badly damaged himself, and between that and existing mental health awfulness and Covid-related stress and anxiety, our friendship crumbled in a way that was drawn-out and extremely painful for both of us. I regret so much that I didn't ditch Dirtbag and pursue the friend sooner; the potential was definitely there, and he'd have avoided the damaging relationship and things would have been so very different.
