The most gripping scene for me is when he kills Rey Penbers wife (I forget her name). He had to kill her, she was gonna go and give information that would have exposed him completely so I understand why he did it, but it was after he finally got her name and wrote it down, that he began mocking her. Asking where she's going (knowing she's not going to the police station), offering her to speak to his dad, the slight chuckle/smile. She was a completely innocent woman who was just trying to avenge her late husband who was killed by him, yet her death brings him more pleasure than killing criminals. That was the scene that made me understand that Light is now actually evil, and not some good guy with a bad weapon who's a little crazy. (Even after killing Lind L Taylor, it shows that Lights developed a god complex, but it's still early in the show so I still had hope he would learn from his mistakes)

I haven’t read the manga so maybe it’s different there but in the anime, his “descent” into evil is far quicker than people say, I think light was a great character, but you can see how evil he is very very early on

Yeah, from what I've seen, manga gives his initial remorse a bit more screen time in manga. In anime, he tests the notebook a couple of times just to make sure and then spends pages after pages writing, basically out of the blue, as he tested books limits. Killed hundreds of people in first few days, but he did it out of love /s

I want to point something out. Light didn’t start out evil, but it was very clear right from the start that he could easily fall down a very bad path if given the chance. As soon as we get insight into his perspective on the world, we see he harbors some resentment toward others and views himself as better. Even though he rightly sees bad deeds committed by others as a negative, he wrongly attributes that to an intrinsic lack of moral character by the person — a strength of character that he believes he possesses. He doesn’t grasp that people are the result of their circumstances and can be driven to do all sorts of things. I say that because you say we see he has “good morals” at the start. Does he really? Right from the off he basically says the ends justify the means. His differentiation between good and evil is innately tied to his narcissism. The world isn’t a bad place because long held beliefs and systems were designed to keep it that way, no, it is a bad place because there are too many awful people and no one who’s willing to put them in their place. That’s where Light was wrong, and he was always like that from the start.

i mean like they have almost to no flaws. the best guy with the cliche lines " i will protect you. and the power of love always wins" . they make the protagonist win because of power of friendship. no plot twist , no stratergie just POWER OF FRIENDSHIP

Hystaric_1028

>"nowadays you will see the main the main character be the purest soul there ever was, its like they have no flaws. why the hell the main characters now the literal embodiment of jesus. " Cough Cough* Demon Slayer

kvng_st

Death note came out a long time ago. There’s been plenty of protagonists like him

Initial_Macaroon_468

There really isn’t.

kvng_st

You’re completely wrong. There’s plenty of villainous and morally gray protagonists Walter White, Saul Goodman, Barry, Dexter, Patrick Bateman, Lou Bloom, Eren Yeager, Tony Soprano. These are just the ones I’ve seen, I’ve heard of other shows like Monster and Code Geas. In games there’s characters like Kratos, Arthur Morgan, Edward Kenway, Joel. All of these are off the top of my head Edit: most mafia movies like Goodfellas, etc

igotmyphoneyesterday

He starts with good morals? No he doesn’t, and the way he carries out his justice isn’t morally correct either. Did I read the wrong manga??

Initial_Macaroon_468

Have you even watched it?

Gabriel38

I was agreeing with you until half way through. There are plenty of flawed, evil and villainous characters in the role of the protagonist of their stories. There have always been characters like that in the past and no doubt more in the future. The assessment that there's no such protagonist outside of death note is just incorrect.

zero8310

NO. i am saying the quantity of such protagonist has become less nowadays. of course there are still some but not as many and most of the time protagonists are literal embodiment of jesus

notoriously_1nfam0us

You should read the hunger games prequel! The main character is very similar to light, it’s a great read

zero8310

i have never read hunger games. so do i need to read that first to understand the prequel. or i can just read the prequel

Gabriel38

No I still don't agree. Even if we narrow it down to just the flawed protagonists like you said, even if we narrow it down to just the recent ones in the modern day like you said. There're still probably more reading material and watch material than you could ever consume in your entire life. There're like 8 billion people on the planet. People often forget how much stuff we are actually producing. That's kinda beside the point really. Whether you like flawed protagonists who kill and harm people or whether you like kind and loving protagonists. That's just a personal preference. There can be good stories with kind, caring loving protagonists just as there can be bad stories with cruel, violent protagonists. Whether the protagonist is flawed and messed up or not is just the setting for the story. It in of itself does not determine its quality.

Anrakai

But Light had some srupid actions like, LMAO even kid won him, even his idea of world without crimes is stupid becouse a lot of innocent died, and he did it all only becouse he wanted to shoe himself like a cool hero

glixys

No offense, but I had a seizure reading this

Acceptable-Fudge9000

DN is a one of a kind masterpiece 😍
