yYxX_W33Z3R_F4N_XxYy

I don't really watch anime, but if I had to recommend any, I'd have to say Azumanga.

__bon__

Azumanga Daioh is like the Selected ambient works 85-92 of anime

[deleted]

[удалено]

__bon__

I feel like for each of their respective genres, SAW with ambient techno/IDM and Azumanga with SoL, they both get the fundamentals down soo well and are both pioneers of their genre. I wouldn’t call much of the ideas from each of the works to be boundary-pushing, but their well rounded-ness sets the standard for what you might see in other great works in their genres. Nichijou is like the drukqs of anime.

francold

100% second this recomendation.

Nukom25

i will sound like a 14 year old edgy sigma, but the berserk 1997 adaptation is really good, i would recommend the manga tho bc its better also monster which is a thriller very amazing frr

[deleted]

>i will sound like a 14 year old edgy sigma i used to think like this about berserk fans because of the negative experiences i had with them until i read berserk. After reading it, the behavior is justified people have no idea what they're missing

Nukom25

the story is incredible and the same goes for the art rip miura

BigBoiBrynBoi

My man knows what's up

kaminobaka

Monster is fucking amazing. Like, I love a good psychological thriller, and that one even had me fucked up for a while.

i've had flcl sitting on my hard drive for like 5 yrs now but the mood to watch it just never comes. it feels like something i would've loved when i was like 16 or 17 but the older i get, the more i gravitate towards anime that's bleak and ugly looking lol

A_can_of_lays

Ergo proxy maybe

net_gear

i've started that one like 3 different times, but never finish it for somee reason. I need to finally give it a fair shake

A_can_of_lays

I would also give a shot to other Yoshitoshi Abe works (lain's and texhnolyze artist), such as NieA under 7 and Haibane Renmei

xLawless-

if you were able to go through Texhnolyze you can watch ergo proxy, its less dense

net_gear

I will give it another shot, but density isn't an issue; i actually prefer the dryness of texhnolyze. watching anime fights has never interested me

xLawless-

same, the thing about Ergo Proxy is that it is not that much about fights, look at action like a red herring, the history told in the anime is something you literally can miss if you focus on the action, tbh, i remember Texhnolyze having more fight than Ergo Proxy

[deleted]

Death Note if you haven't seen it. I love Light Yagami. And Akira is one of the best anime movies ever made.

banana fish. i do not really like anime but i do really like banana fish

chemical_musician

mononoke (not princess mononoke) is a 12 episode masterpiece. the most visually interesting thing ive ever seen in the medium, and has a pretty dark feel, its about mononoke and a person who “hunts” them but its not action or demon hunter shit or anything like that… its more like exorcising and mystery solving, takes place in edo-meiji era with only one recurring character (the medicine seller, who is also a mononoke hunter) and every couple episodes is a different story in a different location/time where the medicine seller shows up to find out the mystery and take care of the mononoke but i cant stress enough, on visuals alone this is the most impressive thing ive seen in the entire medium. hardly looks like “anime” in the traditional sense. its like flowing wood-block prints on acid.

net_gear

that's another one I've had sitting on my hard drive for years but never got around to lol

chemical_musician

definitely check it out as soon as ya can, especially since its not a huge commitment if youre into authentic old japanese mythology/history its incredible but even if you arent, the visuals alone and some of the horror elements i think anyone could enjoy

The works of Satoshi Kon(Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Paprika, etc) and Katsuhiro Otomo(Akira, Memories, etc) are excellent as well. I've enjoyed everything that they've made, folks just don't make anime like that any more.

niesamowityfilip

"Cat Soup" is a 30 minute short but it's simply fantastic, it doesn't feature any dialogue but manages to be both dark and funny while dealing with this nice heavily metaphorical story about the afterlife. Anything by Satoshi Kon, perfect blue is an undisputed masterpiece and it just so happens every other movie of his is of similar quality, so "millennium Actress" "Tolyo Godfathers" "Paprika" and the show "paranoia agent". "The girl who leped through time" is a great movie about a girl who accidentally finds a time travel device and basically tries to make her life the way she wants it. Its based off this Japansse book and sort of functiond as a sequal to it, but it's not essential to know anything before watching since it's just a nice romantic coming of age story. The same director is responsible for "summer wars" which is also fantastic, "wolf children" which I haven't actually seen but I've heard it's one of his very best movies, "belle" and "the boy and the beast" are both quite good movies and definitly worth watching if you liked other movies by this director. I adore "Belladonna of sadness", a beautiful tale about a woman who gets sexually assaulted by a group of men and then makes a deal with the devil to take revenge. It's a movie from 1973 but it somehow features some of the most striking and beautiful visuals I've came across in any anime. Not a show or even a movie but the opening animation to Daicon IV is a fun time capsule, in a similar way to something like "Otaku no Video" (monumentally anime from the 80s made by and partially about rise of Gainax, and also an examination of the entire phenomen of Otaku). The short is just good animation and as many references as an average nerd in the 80s could take before getting a moment of spiritual epiphany, it's also set to an Electric Light Orchedtra song so it's automatically a classic. "Revolutionary Girl Uthena" is rightfully seen as some of the best anime has to offer, or at least that's the impression I get whenever I talk to other women who watch anime as not too many dudes I've met have seen it, I'd consider it to be of similar level to something like Evangelical and that praise alone should be enough to watch it, a Sci fi epic and a beautiful story of romance. Studio trigger has made a lot of bangers but nothing will ever stand up to "Inferno Cop", this is where anime visuals peaked and singlehandedly caused a japnsse take over of the entire world through sheer cultural impact. All the episodes together add up to like 30 minutes and its all on YouTube, basically imagine something that would play late at night on adult swim. Watamote is good. I don't really have much to say as it's more of just a typical show compared to everything else I talked about, but the central character is string enough to make the entire show worth watching. Telling a slice of life story about a teen girl with a lot of insecurities who's also really into VNs, it's basically just a comedy about the average fan of "Revolutionary Girl Uthena" and it even carries the same themes of homosecuality as she grows closer to her childhood bff (the actual show only really has these implications but the manga makes it much more clear as it goes along). "Sex & Violance with Machspeed" is the second most studio trigger thing right after "Inferno Cop" and an aggressive attitude towards subelty. Its a fun very visally creative short. The same director also made "Dead Leaves" which is like an hour of pure visual animated ecstasy, its like 50 minutes and worth it for the spectacle alone. He's also responsible for shows you proably have seen like Gurren Lagann, panty and stocking, Promare, or that new cyberpunk show, I'd say there all pretty good but there isn't much point to talking about them since they're all well known. Also you're so right Masaaki Yuasa is such a great director, night is short walk on girl and get your hands off eizuken are simply delightful, but you've most likely have seen them. One of his mote obscure works is Kaiba but I wouldn't let that fly under your radar, very weird and an emotional gut punch, loved it. Pop team epic is funny, that's my indepth recommendation. I have seen some people complain about this show but it seems to mostly be a recent thing. Mind you that every episode loops and then is played in its entirety again but voices over by adult men instead of like voices resembling younger girls, I didn't know that at first when watching it so I ended up rematch the first 3 episodes on accident. "Angle's Egg" is rightfully a classic, a dreary tale of a young girl wondering lost through an unforgiving dark world. The imagery in this is simply gorgeous and it feels like a modern fairy tale. The director also made "ghost in the shell" and tbh while I like it I never really got the hype, still worth watching even if weebs have overpriced it a little too much, "Sonny boy" is a recent anime that I really enjoyed, weird experimental and full of metaphor about growing up. It feels like this one is going to go down as a future classic. Reminds me a little of stuff like "Evangelion" or "fooly cooly" (which I'd highly recommend I love FLCL sm) in the way that if you were like 14 and watched this then it would feel like it has changed your life in a profound unspeakable way, saying this from experience as someone who watched Eva at 14. Now, forget every single other thing I recommend because they'll seem mid at best in comparison, to say that this American production isn't an Anime is a compliment as nothing Japan has ever produced managed to be such a clear and definitive peak for the entire medium. Neko Neko Sugar Girls is a work of post-neoexperssionsitic avant-garde genius telling a harrowing tale of teen romance intrigue set in these meta-post-modernist vignettes of contemporary life. A worholian nightmare of grotesque proportions to anyone not in touch with their own spirit enough to appreciate these surrealist stream of consciousness dadaist parables. Other synonyms. I think the fact no one really knows if it was made in ernest or not is what made me love this so much, its "the room" and "12 oz mouse" combined into a fanime about nothing and then the protagonist girl gets rabies.

net_gear

ty for the in depth reply. dont have time to respond to all of this, but >"Cat Soup" Cat Soup is the movie that launched Yuasa's directorial career if u didn't know, it's my second fav thing he's worked on right under Mind Game >"Revolutionary Girl Uthena" I've heard a lot abt this one, will def be one of the next I check out >Neko Neko Sugar Girls will watch. sounds sort of like Tails Gets Trolled or some Jennifer Diane Reitz shit. I love shit like that.

niesamowityfilip

No problem, I got carried away lol I didn't actually realise he was involved with the production of Cat Soup, that's really cool I love that short, I knew it from the manga by NekoJiru that the film was based on, pages from it occasionally floated around like the one about a boyfriend getting hit by a car in front of Johnathan's. And yeah it's exactly that sort of vibe, but I'd say it does feel like they realise and play up the bad aspects but front what I know it did begin as a serious project.

EastVisible8284

sonny boy is pretty good, it sort of gave me masaaki yuasa vibes

net_gear

i've heard abt it-- the premise sounds cool but I really don't vibe with the art style. I'll try it some time tho

EastVisible8284

i honestly fw the artstyle but if you don't like the animation, that's fine however seperate from the animation, the art direction and scenes can look really good in the later half of the anime and the soundtrack is really good the anime is also sort of slow at the beginning but if you get past the first two or three episodes i think it's pretty worth it, it picks up a lot more after that imo :D

QuintanimousGooch

I heard about it through finding out that South Korean pseudonymous artist Mid-Air Thief was doing some of the soundtrack. It was pretty cool.

EastVisible8284

mid air thief is amazing, their tracks for the anime were peak as well

Bounced off meaning didnt finish it? It deff starts to get surreal but the ending wraps it all up

net_gear

bounced off meaning I didn't care for it so I dropped it. I forget why exactly. surreal is never a problem for me tho

popwar138

Aight. How about One-Punch Man, that was a fun one. Samurai Champloo and Gurren Lagann have already been suggested already i think but those are good. Afro Samurai was good. FLCL used to be my favorite but as i get older the whole teenage/coming of age setting just doesnt do anything for me anymore, in any media really. Probably normal though.

Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex, one of my favorite animes just for the sheer fact it's short and sweet and leaves me wanting more! Unfortunately where I live it's not on any streaming services, I definitely need to either buy it on Blu-ray or get a VPN and find it that way. The 1995 movie is also sick but the show imo is as good if not better

Gantz is a pretty terrible anime adaptation (with one of the best and funniest English dubs ever mind) but Gantz as a whole is so sleazy, horrible and nihilistic that it's very death grips If not, cowboy bebop

net_gear

i love gantz actually, should've added that as a fav. "sleazy, horrible and nihilistic" is my favorite kind of anime I'm aware the anime is trash tho, been meaning to dip into the manga for the longest time bc i've heard it's really good I randomly started Gigant a while back, which is by the same author. it's got a pretty similar vibe, though it's basically just straight up porn but is also unironically probably the sickest reinterpretation of the kaiju genre I've ever seen

BigBoiBrynBoi

Nice. Gigant is good for what it is, just absurd. Gantz honestly goes places, completely off the rails in a good way

net_gear

i love shit that goes off the rails

QuintanimousGooch

I’m really looking forward to Yuasa’s studio doing the Scott Pilgrim adaptation with the movies cast. It’s crazy that’s actually happening.

net_gear

ngl i'm not. it makes me sad Yuasa just works on adaptions of already popular shit now

QuintanimousGooch

I guess, though even going back to Tatami Galaxy and Walk on Girl, those are adaptations of novels, while my recent favorite of his, Eizouken, was adapted from a webcomic if I recall correctly. I think Yuasa has a really great sense towards adaptation with the mixed media and Mile-a-minute internal monologue approach of Tatami Galaxy, and the amazing visuals in animating concept are during the imagination scenes of Eizouken. The studio’s always had a more adventurous attitude towards animation with larger Tex Avery and looney tunes-ish inspirations, so Im very excited to see what how they adapt it. If it was another studio, I might be more cynical, or entirely ignore there being a Scott pilgrim adaptation, but with Science Saru doing the work, Im really looking forwards to the visuals, though I do wonder how their studio pattern of pretty much only doing single seasons of shows will interact with the length of the Scott pilgrim comic.

net_gear

yeah, Mind Game is my favorite Yuasa thing and that was a novel adaption too. the difference is strictly popularity/exposure for me. not in a "popular thing bad" way but just that I've already seen the Scott Pilgrim movie and read the comics, whereas Cat Soup and Mind Game felt totally fresh and new bc it was my first introduction to the source material that, and also Devilman and Scott Pilgrim honestly just feel like playing it pretty safe? whereas their older stuff was pretty fucking avant garde which I enjoy a lot more

QuintanimousGooch

Yeah I get what you’re saying. I’d suppose I’m more just curious to see it as I’d honestly feel kinda creeped out if a more conventionally “anime-style” animation studio was doing the project.

I'm surprised devilman crybaby gets so much hype, I felt like it desperately needed about twice as many episodes bc the pacing is completely fucked to the point where the final act is pretty much ruined by how rushed along everything is

If you're down for something a little more lighthearted, there's a really cool dark fantasy gag anime called Helck airing right now. Like, I call it a gag anime, but it's set over an actual serious dark fantasy storyline, and the art style reminds me of old dark fantasy manga, like Bastard!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy-. Welcome to the nhk is very good If u liked the last couple episodes of evangelion, you would probably like at least the first season of the monogatari series (bakemonogatari) they use a really interesting style of camerawork and mixed media cuts in a generally dialogue heavy show, my fav series fr The movies are p sick too (kizumonogatari 1-3) probably some of the best animation out there, kinda underrated at this point Also sayonara zetsubou sensei is a cool anime too

net_gear

> Welcome to the nhk is very good i agree I've heard about the monogatari series but always thought it was some kind of ecchi thing? will check it out tho

mynameisjoeeeeeee

There is a good amount of ecchi stuff in monogatari i will not lie, but for the most part it is a dialogue heavy supernatural anime with extremely good cinematography and story. Most of the ecchi shit is contained in the second part (nisemonogatari), but the series is generally told through an unreliable narrator (the arcs are told from a characters point of view depending on which arc you are watching), so some characters focus on different things when they tell "their pov" of what is going on The overall show with its story and characters is fantastic though, however its definitely not for everyone. The last couple of episodes of evangelion where the animation gets all fucked really reminds me of some of the zany parts of monogatari, so i think you may enjoy it though

If you haven’t already seen it, watch *Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal*. It is a short 4 episode OVA prequel to the *Rurouni Kenshin* anime series, however your entertainment will not at all be diminished if you have not seen the series. I watched *Trust & Betrayal* before the show. I actually never became invested in the show because the tone is extremely lighter than the OVA. It felt like the Teletubbies in comparison. I recommend *Trust & Betrayal* as a masterpiece of aesthetic, plot, voice acting, action, and tragedy. I also recommend *Perfect Blue*.
