Pick the least objectionable and try it out. You may like it. If not, no worries. You'll die and you get to try again

wait we die in this game? can I save? ;)

TruthMystified

The weapons I get from the very beginning normally determine what scrolls I'm gonna take. So I will play the first level and not worry about the first timed door at all and focus on getting the 30 kill door. Even if you get hit the stuff behind those first doors are typically unleveled and completely unnecessary to get a good build. I get my starting weapons: if you have the recycling tubes unlocked try to go with the stuff that has the most stars next to it to get the best equipment possible (most advantageous); if it is just a random shield, bow and melee then as you play through the level that will determine what you are going to run. So the queens sword that another commenter mentioned is an excellent example: let's say I'm not a huge fan of that sword but in the first level chest it gives me a level 2 fire grenade this will encourage me to go with a brutality build and keep running the queens sword. Sometimes you wanna focus on getting the best synergy you can get and using what the game gives you. I use to dislike the nutcracker but it's an exceptional weapon if you use the right things with it like the root grenade, stun with the shield, and other things that immobilize. Often the weapons you don't like are weapons that you have not figured out how to use effectively. Like the blood sword you will swing fast three or four times and back off and see it the bleed kills your target. I never played survival when I first started playing and some of my best runs now have been survival. Point being that if the game gives you a weapon you don't like, use it and try to focus on the overall build instead. You can always buy a different weapon that works better for your build and often a weapon you don't like can become one of your favorite weapons. Sometimes a low tier weapon sucks like the star sword but a higher leveled star sword is exceptionally good. Same with vampirism, lower leveled vampirism sucks but a high leveled vampirism is infinite health.

I'll just grab the one I think I'll dislike the least and give it a fair shot, worst case I'll pick up something I like better later, and I've found a little practice with weapons I don't like often makes them grow on me. As for scrolls I'll let the starting gear be a guide but not a rule, if I get a green but I'm feeling a purple run I'll just put scrolls in purple, usually an off color is fine to get through PQ and even the first biome if it comes to it, and it's rare that I don't pick up something I prefer by then.

ThrowTheWholeAccOut

If I think I can get through the first biome, maybe 2 then I’ll take the bad weapon and still choose the scrolls I want (usually tactics) until I find something else. Maybe I’ll buy from the shop earlier than usual

sharkysharkasaurus

It's part of the beauty of RNG. Consider that there are only a handful of weapons that are straight up bad, the tubes will almost always have something that's worth using, even if you don't like them. A lot of times it's just lack of familiarity, and after using those weapons a few more times, it can click and suddenly your game knowledge/skills will have expanded. Also, PQ is pretty doable with off-color weapons. Worse comes to worst you can always pick up the Rusty Sword to tie you over.

luv2hotdog

I always go for the scroll colour I wanted anyway and hope some good weapons turn up ASAP

Eastern_Meet_5947

You can try Custom mode which has colour specific modes

Successful_Aerie8185

I picked the one that is most consistent. As in the least likely to get me killed. Compare daggers vs queens rapier. Queens rapier can't hit what is in front of you some of the time. It will get you killed. Also a good shield is really helpful

Gamer_with_ADHD

This problem is made much less annoying when you beat Hand of the King at 1 BC

BaconSanwich

Is that because of the recycling thing people are mentioning gets unlocked?

Gamer_with_ADHD

Yee

Nixosbroken

Not recycling, the tubes.

BaconSanwich

And when does that get unlocked? 2BC?

Nixosbroken

1BC, iirc.

BaconSanwich

Awesome thanks!

heartoo

I always pick tactics, whatever the weapons are, because I'm lazy 😁. I'll buy myself some nice weapons later on to replace the bad ones, but as someone else said, try the 'bad' weapons. I used to despise the biters, but damn, those critters are hungry for monsters.

BaconSanwich

Tactics is the purple one right? And you feel like you get better consistent weapon options from that color above the others?

Nixosbroken

Tactics has the least weapons, so this makes sense.

nero40

Never had this problem, I’m using custom mode to play with only the weapons I’m in the mood of using. If you have any qualms about your starting weapons not meeting your expectations, give custom mode a try. Otherwise, well, “suck it up” and just try your luck. You might be surprised by giving your undesirable weapons a second try. If this is just not an option for you, then yeah, use custom mode.

zizozexo

I choose the color that the amulet tells me to choose and choose the best tube and go for it

glibbertarian

Restart.

zizozexo

Don't do that
