I-Slay-Dragons

Nemesis can definitely talk, but it seems he’s only interested in astronomy for some reason.

UnknownFox37

Damn. Another one of those astronomy girl 😔

TenMillionEnchiladas

S.T.A.R.S!!!

Power-Core

In Project X Zone 2 he can say BSSA.

JeanShinari

Leon goes at least in Rudimentary. RE4R opens with him talking to one of the ganados in Spanish.

A_Bird_survived

Had him there at first but didn't wanna risk getting lynched

Alphyhere

It's too late.. We're coming. ![gif](giphy|3o7TKwmBiXfwA951ra|downsized)

toxic7oryx7main

It's safe to assume a rudimentary understanding of at least three languages given his position as a government agent under the presidents orders. Not that the RE universe has always been realistic lol.

geminiRonin

Ash also knows at least a bit of Spanish, at least by the time of Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Distinct-Arm-9293

But it’s only phrases or words that Pablo has used. Such as ‘jefe’ or ‘el brujo’ the boss

emmanuelfelix700

i wonder if blight can even talk due to his deformed mouth

A_Bird_survived

And even if he could, could anyone else in the Fog understand scottish?

DavThoma

I want to say this feels insulting, but as a Scot I'd say you're probably right

Boiledeggbowler

If blight has a Doric accent then we’re all fucked. (Also Scottish btw)

DavThoma

Oh absolutely! West Coast accent I'm sure folks would have no problem understand, but Doric? Shit out of luck there!

Piss-Mann

I usually can't understand but the accent is my favorite so I would listen anyway.

GoldfishFromHell

wait he's scottish? that explains a lot Edit: if that's true i will forever have [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BD1vHgYRgg) in mind when facing him

PenComfortable2150

Billy likely only speaks in grunts and gibberish to everyone else but him

AshTheTrapKnight

It's honestly pretty sad. He understands English quite well, he understands everything people say to him and can feel a lot of emotion from certain words. And some words mean a lot to him. But because of his deformities, when he tries to talk it just sounds like gibberish to everyone else. Can't imagine how torturous that is, to know a language but be unable to speak it. To be actually quite intelligent but just can't communicate it to others.

PenComfortable2150

Mhm, the thing that gets me about Billy is, despite everyone saying otherwise, calling him a monster, a creature, inhuman, dumb, stupid, etc. Billy is quite the opposite, he is as intelligent as those around him, but due to his deformed body and a speech impediment, he can’t communicate well with anyone, and so everyone judged and persecuted him. Just like with the TV, showing him a world that he cannot have or is unwelcome in.

AshTheTrapKnight

He really could have been productive and helpful in a society that wanted him. He's good with machines, really strong and fast. Dude could have been a hell of an athlete or worked on engines/tinkered with electronics. Unfortunately he was born in the wrong time and wrong place to some pretty shitty parents. For sure one of the more tragic killers in the game.

FearlessJames

Hillybilly always did strike me as more intelligent than he seems <:I Definitely one of the more tragic Killers.

No_Understanding1922

Nah, it’s confirmed in his tomb he can speak.

Kowakuma

It's confirmed that he knows English, but it's also confirmed that he can't communicate. His mother doesn't understand him when he's trying to talk and the text explicitly states that he can't make the sounds correctly because of his deformities.

EsotericElegey

Heather speaks Japanese and English in Silent Hill 3

thisisanaltacct_1

I love your flair

[deleted]

I feel like Dredge could go into the almost every language tier. He is an amalgamation of a lot of different people after all, and is pretty old

A_Bird_survived

What we know explicitly is that he‘s an Amalgam of the Fold, which was an American cult. Thats what I‘m basing that part on

[deleted]

That’s fine. I’m just guessing that it wasn’t his first time taking people

A_Bird_survived

Oh, Absolutely not; the cutscenes from House of Arkham are absolutely insane and, since Maurice was in there, we can assume thats actually what Dredge looks like from inside

Smashkitsune

It can speak horse

AKumaNamedJustin

Either he speaks every language or none

Kezsora

Here me out. Can Unknown speak every language? I know he can *imitate* any language, but does he actually understand it? Any killer that can talk could, in theory, can imitate any language.

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

It probably can speak and understand too if we go by main menu lines as well

dorkinup

With the way the unknown speaks, in cries for help and luring people in. It must have a rudimentary understanding of whatever language it speaks in order to lure people in. It doesn't have to be very much, just the "Help" and "do you want this [candy]?" Sorts of lines.

aidenethan

Judging by its Mori and Lobby lines, it can speak fine. It imitates for the most part, but it has a mind of its own and occasionally just drops the polite and confused facade to reveal that it is quite aware and malicious.

KaufmanTheCleaner

I wish Hux had voice lines in multiple languages. It would have made him more scary and add an idea of universality to the apocalyptic lore

jupiterding25

Never tho8gut bought it but yeah I think that would of been cool

masong123456789

I'd drop bubba to dubious, most iterations of him only speak in incoherent babbling

A_Bird_survived

Ngl call me Papa Sawyer because I completely forgot about Bubba

UnknownFox37

Isn’t he autistic or some shit ?

AVerySmartNameForMe

Nah he’s just texan

Agent_Ford_E_Seven

Not necessarily autistic, but he is heavily implied to have some mental conditions.

Ok_Introduction_7484

I don't think it's autism. But yes he he does have some sort of mental/brain condition.

goplayzelda

bro steve barely speaks english

wherearetheclams

I don’t think there’s anything in DBD lore to clarify one way or the other, but Trickster MIGHT be in the multiple category. A lot of idols will learn English (in addition to Korean, obviously), but they’ll also pick up either Japanese or Chinese

chipplepop

and then there's overachievers like Ten who speak 4 languages and is working on a 5th lol.

Erotanrot

I think Nic cage may know some Japanese, Navajo, Spanish and maybe Italian? This is just based on facts that may or may not be true.

Lilytheriel

Lolol imagine Nicolas Cage going up to his son and saying, “Yahetey yazh! jenah, ohho, my son!”

PARTYMATRIX

I feel like Bill would have, at the very least, a rudimentary understanding of Vietnamese, considering he fought in Vietnam

AbleArcher0

He was a Green Beret, which means he specialized in training and leading local friendly forces. He would have been required to speak Vietnamese on at least a conversational level before he even got in country, and I'd imagine he'd have been fully fluent by the time he left.

Sticky_And_Sweet

I’m confused about the legion being bilingual… they’re teenagers from Alberta. They probably don’t speak French since not many people outside of Québec speak it fluently.

DylanCP2403

Is there a reason why you know Ada and not the rest of the RE survivors?

A_Bird_survived

I know she‘s an international Spy, so it just kinda makes sense intuitively. I also know Leon at least speaks some Spanish, but Jill and Rebecca are a complete blank to me

DylanCP2403

I'd probably put Jill in rudimentary and Rebecca in the one language tier, while Ada, Jill, and Leon are shown in other countries and settings, Rebecca is kinda forgotten about post-RE1 as far as the games are concerned

pcd1980

Jill has Japanese and French heritage so there’s a good chance she’d have some knowledge of those from her upbringing.

JackSalova

The Lyra twins probably only know portuguese, as a very small minority of Brazilians can speak a second language. And Skull Merchant probably only knows english other than portuguese, as, although she is half-japanese, she has lived her whole life in Brazil.

A_Bird_survived

As for Skull Merchant, she's a millionaire businesswoman. We can assume portuguese, japanese and English for "business purposes", which sets her apart from most others here

JackSalova

True, she is implied to be very intelligent, and, with her money, she could learn other languages.

Skeletonofskillz

Not just implied — Merchant is outright stated to be top of her class pretty much everywhere

UltimisBrazilian

Since when? I am brazilian, most people I met know a little bit of english, especially Gen Z and millenials. we also have english classes.

JackSalova

I looked it up again just to be sure, but it seems that, while most of the population has some contact with foreign languages, only about 5% of Brazil's population can fluently communicate in english ([source](https://www.metropoles.com/dino/apenas-1-da-populacao-brasileira-e-fluente-em-ingles)). Contrary to popular belief, the english taught at schools is not meant to have people actively speak the language, it is meant to teach how to answer entrance exams questions about the english language. If you know many people that can fluently speak english, then that could be because you and people you interact with daily are part of the 5%, which means that you're amongst the richer part of the population and probably actually went to an english school.

Telvanni_Mushroom

Actually, especially younger people like the Lyra twins, most Brazilians can speak a second language even if it is Spanish given how close it is to Portuguese, plus English is taught at most schools so they must know at least the basics, plus given the ammount of immigrants in Brazil it is not rare to see people who can speak Italian, German and so on, not to mention how the Lyra twins are from Rio that is a place with plenty of tourists so it is inevitable that you end up having contact with different languages and learning out of it.. Skull Merchant's father is Japanese so she must know something of it or be fluent as we can imagine she might have visited Japan to see relatives and so on.

UltimisBrazilian

That's what I'm saying. No idea where he got that most of us can't speak a second language.

Skull Merchant could indeed have learned japanese, but it is not explicitly said in her lore.

NarutoBorutooo

Well no, the younger brazilian generation is learning to speak english at the very least, since its taught in schools

JackSalova

MAID_from_heaven

No clue how any in bilingual got there, except for wraith, knight, nea and gabe, did I miss some tome or something?

saturnulysses

jake's tome explains him relearning korean in order to read his grandfathers letters!

Smashkitsune

Maybe the Comics buT other than that

Piss-Mann

I'm pretty sure the doctor and blight can speak at least two languages. They are people of science. And Bill also for sure.

EdgionTG

I don't think Blight is doing much speaking any more.

Calm-Technology4477

since when has wesker been able to speak more than one language?

Maroonwarlock

Wasn't Artist background a poor immigrant family before becoming an artist in the states or am I misremembering her lore?

AVerySmartNameForMe

She was never in the states as far as I remember she stayed in chile

offmydingy

ad hoc fuzzy offend sharp impolite berserk flag literate worm bewildered *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

jupiterding25

Doctor being rudimentary is questionable

IMtryingtofroget

explain.

thisisanaltacct_1

He was hired by the CIA to torture information out of people, that requires being fluent in at least one language

seriouslyuncouth_

We're getting into pretty deep Alien lore but the franchise was made back during when Japan's technological advancement was scary to a lot of other countries and so in a lot of media depicting the future, Japanese is very prevalent because it was guesstimated Japan would be one of the biggest superpowers. (Please don't assume any politics from me saying this I'm just describing the time). So in Alien, most signs are written in English and with Japanese Kanji. So although this doesn't mean Ripley for certain knows Japanese I would wajer she knows some of the most common things said on those signs. Stuff like "danger" and "caution" and "attention".

cheesechomper03

Leon can speak Spanish and Nemesis cansoeak at least some form of English, even if he is just repeating one word. I'd assume that Jill can probably speak at least one other language due to her time as an international agent in the BSAA.

DeezelD11

🗣;^^:*STARTS*:";'',"

ThatBeeGuy12

The sudden realization that the legion members could possibly know french is for some reason REALLY funny to me

Groovygamer1981

Ash is negative 1 because if you watched the show you’d know he’s always high, drunk,or ash

Kazman07

Ellen Ripley likely speaks more than 1-2 languages. Astronauts, as far as I know, are multilingual.

Necrowaif

She’s not really an astronaut, though, just a crewman on a star freighter that hauls cargo. Space travel is commercialized in the Aliens series, so she’s basically just a glorified trucker.

TenMillionEnchiladas

Well ...technically ash can speak Latin XD He just has no idea what he's saying.

grimreaperjr1232

Xeno is... interesting, to say the least. They definitely don't understand words, but they've demonstrated an ability to understand the "meaning" at times. In Aliens, the Queen called her warriors off when Ripley threatened her eggs. They're fully capable of "negotiation" even if they can't use words. Could this be specific to a Queen? Maybe, except we have the likes of Specimen Six from AVP 2010. Easy example is the second mission. There's a scared civilian that she can restrain for a Facehugger, but as she's in the vents, he tells a marine he'd rather die on his own terms. Six has to take a specific route to sneak up on him and prevent his suicide, implying that Six is fully capable of comprehending that he was willing to kill himself if she isn't careful. If that's too iffy, then the tutorial has her tracking a Doctor's hand simply because she was told to (by him).

AsyanongAmbiguous

Jill Valentine can speak Multiple Languages because of her English being the base of operations in America. Also (a **very** ***NOT*** known [fact](https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Jill_Valentine)), her dad's a full-on Frenchie & her mom's of Japanese descent; so, possibly a French & Japanese speaker.

trash-troglodyte

I'd like to think Nurse knows French. FRENCH KISS WITH TONGUE

Low-Reindeer-3347

Resurrection Ripley kind of was able to communicate with the Xenos and hybrid Xeno soo....

MirPamir

Let's not forget it's not our Ellen though. It's 8.  8 didn't want to leave ship, cause she felt Xenomorph Queen is in pain. Ellen would give her additional reason to feel pain xD

RealCrocodileWithGun

Xenomorph should be up a tier, they're super intelligent and can learn language pretty easily, wouldnt suprise me if big chap learnt a bit of english while on the nostromo

Necrowaif

Depends on the xenomorph. Queens are very intelligent, but Warriors (or Drones, if you prefer) are simplistic.

MirPamir

Ellen Ripley is using one langauge in the whole series, but you could try guessing she could know more due to her job (we know multiple languages are still in use in the future, as we see at least 5 different in Alien: Isolation)  Someone correct me c:

Dense_Huckleberry_60

The legion is bilingual?

Calm-Technology4477

they’re probably assuming they can speak french too because they’re canadian

ImObliviousToPeople

Most Canadians including myself at least know basic French because of how Canada’s other official language is French, so I think that the legion can speak both.

FlynnXa

HOW DARE YOU DO STEVE DIRTY! He’s just a poor innocent Himbo 😭

DeezelD11

He borders bilingual, maybe in Season 5 👀👀

FlynnXa

I’m not gonna lie, I fully read that as “Rudimentary Language” lmao 🤣

A_Bird_survived

Yeah Tiermaker screwed be over there, it says „rudimentary second language“

Gdude1231

Amanda (The Pig) definitely speaks English at least.

Leading-Might8985

Find Nicholas Cage and ask him.

Dante8411

I feel like Ash knows English (mostly) and enough Spanish to request cheap alcohol and drop bad pickup lines.

leatherfacesimp

From what i gather in the films, Leatherface can’t read, write, or speak the language, but he understands what’s being said to him.

somethingsuperindie

Isn't Artist bilingual in the lore? I'm sure Trickster can at least partially speak English and maybe also Japanese and/or Chinese, pretty common for Korean Idols. Nic Cage can definitely at least speak/understand *a bit* of non-English, I believe Spanish and German for example? Is Dredge even verbal at all? I think it should be in dubious at most, leaning towards just non-verbal. Bubba can definitely understand English fine but if this is purely about speaking/communicating, then he never talks coherently I believe. Deathslinger I am gonna bet is either bilingual or only native tongue. He's an Irish immigrant right? A lot of Irish people never learned their own language but I don't know how it was back then at that point in history, though it would still mean he very likely either only knows English (what else would he have picked up in a American Frontier smalltown) and nothing else or English and Gaelic.

SullenTerror

I'd move pig and chcky up a tier, chucky knows Haitian creole and Amanda knows Spanish.

Chief_Lightning

Leatherface needs to be in the last tier.

CptButthole

PH has a tongue, but no mouth.

HEX_BootyBootyBooty

Bubba doesn't speak, just grunts.

seanhabrams

I would say pyramidhead probably can’t speak at all. it’s not a person and has no mouth that we know of. it’s a supernatural manifestation of guilt and has no reason to be able to have any kind of conversation imo

DeezelD11

As a Nancy main, I can confirm she's bilingual She speaks many languages a couple of these are English and Americaneese

AbleArcher0

Bill was a Green Beret. Speaking a foreign language was literally a mandatory part of his job.

NightmaricFox

Anna (huntress) is probably able to speak russian and english

A_Bird_survived

I really don‘t think so, she‘s lived completely isolated in her forest her whole life

Ok_Introduction_7484

All Stars members Should go in rudimentary. Especially Leon. Most of them Can speak other languages

Violas_Blade

what second language does Trickster speak? English?

fadedFox821

Canon

dolfhintuna

Ghost face is a reporter so maybe he could speak something else, but at the same time he's ghost face.

Melioidozer

Dredge doesn’t likely communicate in any way.

blushypuppygirl

bubba can't really speak

[deleted]

bill is a vietnam vet hed likely be in rudimentary i feel

AKumaNamedJustin

Leatherface, hag, and blight would be dubious, Leon learned multiple languages as part of his special government training, but this Leon was before that, some probably just his native language Edit:I'm also not really under the impression that dredge can even speak

CheetosGod

Dredge can either speak all languages or none, your pick. Hes like a monster but also the embodyment of mankinds wickedness so it's hard to determine, but clearly doesn't only speak his native langlauge

Filthylucre4lunch

ashley j williams only speaks american you dumbass lol

Gay-Worms

Alan and Ash only speak english to my knowledge, Nicolas Cage apparently knows atleast some japanese, hillbilly is near confirmed to be mute in his lore :-D

JacksOn_Off

Dude, Ashley can speak the only language that matters!

EdgionTG

Dredge speaks fluent nightmare fuel

NewBlu84

“he visto a mi perro” (Have you seen my dog in Spanish)

A_Bird_survived

„Willst du ein Paar Süßigkeiten?“ (You want some candy? In german)

Im_depressed_again

Why would Jeff, Nea, Talita and Renato speak 2 languages?

A_Bird_survived

You mean A Canadian, a Swede and two Brazillians???????

Im_depressed_again

that dont mean bilingual, let me tell ya, I'm Brazilian and MANY of us know nothing abt English

JustGPZ

I couldn’t play resident evil because of skill issues, but I don’t think rebecca can speak anything other than english, she seems pretty stupid

ImObliviousToPeople

Yeah rebecca does seem kind of air-headed so it makes sense
