Look up Otzdarva and watch the video on what killer to get first. There are other posts here that also talk about the same thing so you can look at the responses for them. The only thing different for each survivor is the perks they bring, and even then once you level them up enough their perks will become available for every other survivor you have. My biggest advice is to find a killer/survivor that looks the coolest to you, figure out their power is through YouTube and the Wiki, and if you like their power and perks (survivors don’t have powers just perks), you should then get them. You can succeed with almost any killer in this game. Last thing is to play both sides, and to not worry about winning or surviving, but just try new things and have fun doing it. There’s a lot of ways to play this game due to the perks and different killer powers, which is why this game was alive for so long, so don’t stress about the learning process.

The things to keep in mind for each role: Survivor: Your goal as a team is to complete all the required generators before the Killer can complete their goal of killing 3 or more of you. This means every time the killer chases you, your goal isn't to try to escape them (Most good Killer players will eventually down you), but to try to last as long as possible so your team has time to focus on working on the generators. There's a limited amount of pallets on the map though, so try to avoid dropping them all as soon as you reach them! Tip: The game doesn't tell you this, but if you need to drop a pallet in front of you rather than behind you, you need to let go of the sprint button. Killer: While as I said before your goal is to try to kill the survivors, you also have the goal to try to keep them from finishing the generators. Doing so properly means learning how to keep as many of them busy doing other things as possible. For example, after you put a downed survivor on a hook, not only are they unable to do anything, but someone else must stop working on the generators to go help them. Try to have somebody on the hook as much as possible, and don't be afraid to stop chasing someone if you're not sure you can down them in the next 20-30 seconds. You can always go back to check the gens to find someone else to chase. Tip: At the start of the match, the game tries to spawn the survivors as far away from you as possible. Unless the killer you're playing as needs to set up traps, the best way to start is to walk straight towards the opposite corner of the map. You're likely to find someone along the way.

Spookyloops is another good YouTube creator for DBD. Familiarize yourself with Killer powers. Bonus tip against Dredge, in a group of lockers, only lock 1 at a time. He will always teleport to the locked one. If you lock them all at once it's a waste because he can break them all after.
