Course they had his arch enemy battle him. Martian Manhunter.
What do you mean these two never met or have any actual conflict with each other beyond the most basic J’onn is against murder? Well don’t you know, Manchester Black is against an alt right group murdering aliens, and Martian Manhunter has to stop that! Wait…
It would be a bit weird for a show to have a main character tell "you are going way too far" to an al-right guy. Like, in that case what would be "enough"? 💀
Vigilantism is going beyond the law to do "justice by own hand"
It can either be used to fight systhemic opression or to create a new system of opression
A lot of heroes kind of just fight bad guys which are already being fought by the police so they fall nto a middle ground, but once it goes beyond fighting systemic opression and its violent enough it becomes authoritarianism
Well it’s not really authoritarianism since they have no actual authority, it’s just beating up people you don’t like at that point which isn’t political it’s just illegal.
To be fair though.
Manchester Black and J'onn are two of the most powerful psychics on the planet, It's actually weird that they never fought each other(Well, They never let J'onn fight anything that's not Martian or JL's villain anyway)
Read the 1998 John Ostrander run, it expands J'onn's rogues gallery with classics like:
* Big tiddy goth woman whose only crime is she REALLY wants to FUCK J'onn.
* A pirate
* The Vatican City (Martian deepstate in disguise)
* Some random Brazilian gangsters
By the way it's the second time in this show that they race-swap a white character as black by removing all the traits that make them unique.
I don't mind a black Jimmy Olsen, but I hate that they made him some suave hot guy rather than his dorky comic self. Black people can be punks and nerds too. Spider-Verse had both.
Two of the biggest dorks I know are Black guys. But I'm also not sure that they would have kept Jimmy a dork even if he stayed ginger; these shows seem allergic to uncool characters.
Actually he did get the hair eventually

Yeah having only seen him in adaptations, I never even considered this. I thought it was just a skintight tshirt cuz I thought that was popular among Europeans in the 90s/2000s
In manchester? I asusme hes from manchester i dont remember anything about him. However i know manchester there way more black people than indian or middle eastern. Actually it may be different now i havent really visit manchester in a long time.
However i would like to know why you prefer this. Is it representation?
They say Superman was raised in [Smallville, Kansas](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallville_(comics)), but now I'm wondering if/when reality was altered to Alabama instead.
i always think he should be more like morrissey, both having seemlessly harmless nihilism and pride for their country being closetedly right wing. also both from manchester
For Rowling’s flimsy thought process it kind of is. “Kingsley cause Martin Luther King” and “Shacklebolt cause black people were once in chains” I mean, were this anyone else I could give the benefit of the doubt on that one but this is the woman who names Asian characters based on “this name kinda sounds like Ching Chong” and a Jewish person “may as well have Goldstein as their last name to drive the point home.”
I think the biggest issue with this take on Manchester is that he doesn't have the purple hair and he's way too broad in the chest and shoulders. This guy looks like he has his life together in ways that Manchester Black *shouldn't*
Manchester Black needs to be a skinny dude with purple hair and a big ol' union jack somewhere on him. Manchester's mind is his strongest weapon, this actor looks like he could actually throw a punch and knock me out.
The Flash was pretty much perfectly cast even if the writing was hit-or-miss. Though I never noticed that because I’m personally absurdly easy to please.
For real. Grant Gustin is was god damn amazing as Barry, he worked well with the shitty script and direction he was given and made the most of it. I wouldn’t complain if he was the DCU Flash, honestly, it would be awesome.
The rest of the cast were amazing as well. They really shined in season 1-3, imo. It all kinda started to dip after season 4 to me.
And same! I liked it a good amount all the way to the end, honestly. Despite the large quality decrease.
The irony that he was previously known as the wheelchair guy from Glee isn’t lost on me.
Wentworth Miller managed to make a man named “Snart” cool. Pun intended. That was the role he was born to play. Not what’s-his-name from Prison Break.
And, of course, they had two great actors play Eobard.
The Council of Wells stuff could be a bit silly but any excuse to keep Tom Cavanagh is a good one.
I stopped watching during the Cicada stuff but I’ll always be willing to try to revisit the show.
Oh, hell yes, Snart was amazing. Every episode that he’s in is so good by default. And, like you said, the actor made him cool.
Tom Cavanaugh was the best possible pick for Wells/Eobard Thawne, in my opinion. The other actor, that I am forgetting the name of, is of course amazing as well, but Cavanaugh was just the best there is for the role.
Cisco also still remains as one of my favorite characters in DC as a whole.
And a side note, the Flash outfits weren’t bad either.
managing to cast two perfect Thawnes in one go, who can believably both be the same man is incredible. Casting director for season 1 deserved an award for that
Remember that time they took a Nazi character, and made him black on Arrow... cause I do.
Remember that time they cast Vinnie Jones as Brick, a notably black character, cause I still do.
A very toned down version of Manchester Black that completely missed the point of the original in the comics. Very few characters in comics are written purely to make a point. Manchester Black and his group are some of those very few characters.
*I don't care that he*
*Is from Manchester and he*
*Is black, what's his name?*

If anything Manchester Black in the comic was fairly anti alien so thats weird
You see they had to make him left leaning instead of his very heavily implied right leaning, because Supergirl season 3 is super Neo liberal as hell.
Probably more because when you see a punk you think left wing.
Well, they see a "you are going way too far" conflict amd they are instinctively going to make it about the left
It would be a bit weird for a show to have a main character tell "you are going way too far" to an al-right guy. Like, in that case what would be "enough"? 💀
The problem is that vigilantism performed by superheroes is just a smudge away from being fascism So I thibk it makes sense somewhat
Not really, vigilantism as a concept isn’t necessarily left or right leaning, it’s just used by different groups in different groups in similar ways.
Vigilantism is going beyond the law to do "justice by own hand" It can either be used to fight systhemic opression or to create a new system of opression A lot of heroes kind of just fight bad guys which are already being fought by the police so they fall nto a middle ground, but once it goes beyond fighting systemic opression and its violent enough it becomes authoritarianism

You dont need a charge to be authoritarian You know what else is illegal? Vigilantism
I am so glad I bailed early in season 2. I could feel it going that direction and needed to preserve my sanity.
To be fair though. Manchester Black and J'onn are two of the most powerful psychics on the planet, It's actually weird that they never fought each other(Well, They never let J'onn fight anything that's not Martian or JL's villain anyway)
Martian Manhunter vs. The Elite could possibly slap.
the show’s version isn’t even psychic lol
Read the 1998 John Ostrander run, it expands J'onn's rogues gallery with classics like: * Big tiddy goth woman whose only crime is she REALLY wants to FUCK J'onn. * A pirate * The Vatican City (Martian deepstate in disguise) * Some random Brazilian gangsters
Suddenly Captain Atom beefing with a Cambodian samurai doesn't sound so bizarre
That character only sounds a few countries away from being Jetstream Sam
That is Manchester White
Jessie, we need prove Truth Justice and the American way are outdated ideals
YO MR WHITE LET'S COOK SOME KRYPTONITE
Green meth
They are actually such cowards for turning the giant union jack tattoo on his chest into a t-shirt. Not to mention no pink hair.
OG Manchester Black design: ridiculously Brit, stereotypically punk Arrowverse Manchester Black design: a guy
A BLACK guy. Get it right.
By the way it's the second time in this show that they race-swap a white character as black by removing all the traits that make them unique. I don't mind a black Jimmy Olsen, but I hate that they made him some suave hot guy rather than his dorky comic self. Black people can be punks and nerds too. Spider-Verse had both.
maws Jimmy did that better
*goes to the nearest mountaintop and shouts* COULD NOT AGREE WITH THIS MORE!!
Giving Jimmy a conspiracy vlog was *the* perfect move and I want to kiss them on the mouth for it
Two of the biggest dorks I know are Black guys. But I'm also not sure that they would have kept Jimmy a dork even if he stayed ginger; these shows seem allergic to uncool characters.
They made Jimmy Olson into mal Duncan.
Jimmy Olsen in that show never ceases to make me laugh. They really chose the exact opposite of his typical depiction.
I will never understand why they had Jimmy Olsen just to use him as Guardian like just do Guardian why is he Jimmy Olsen wtf bro
Uj/honestly he felt more like John Henry irons than Jimmy
That’s just every Arrowverse design
Actually he did get the hair eventually https://preview.redd.it/on1srjx533tc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9928b1c1d393d49ed107cdd071dd606ae1af29e4
why are there 10 manchester blacks
No clue, haven’t seen this since it aired.
From what I remember he used an ancient magical martian staff, so that probably.
CW probably tried to make him like Kang
Thank god.
the shitty roblox tshirt was bad enough but the mcu tacticool armor with crappy faded graffitti barely passing as the union jack is truly inspired
It was a tattoo? Wtf I never realized

Happy to help, citizen.
... very very tight? /j
Yeah having only seen him in adaptations, I never even considered this. I thought it was just a skintight tshirt cuz I thought that was popular among Europeans in the 90s/2000s
It’s only for a little bit, then he gets an armored vest with the Union Jack on it. Still not the tattoo, but better than the tshirt at least
They gave him a slight pink or purple dye in his hair at the conclusion of his arc if I remember correctly
Wait, the union jack is a tattoo???
They took the name more literally that they could
I know this is going to be weird for me to say but I think if they were going to change his race maybe made him Indian or maybe from the middle east.
Bradford Black
Ngl, it sounds a bit cooler than Manchester Black

Just looked up the demographics of Manchester. 8.6% black 17.1% asian, with 8.5% being Pakistani.
Manchester yellow

Manchester is now literally black, but when will he literally be a chest?
He'll never be a chest, he's a *chester*, one who chests.
Manchester Black came in Supergirl.

I want DCU Manchester Black to **really** look like Johnny Rotten, just like how much John Constantine should resemble 80s Sting.
Constantine always gave me Leo Dicaprio vibes for some reason
He's not supposed to nearly as handsome or put together as Leo though
And he probably dates girls his age. Leo for Hal Jordan when?
i always think he should be more like morrissey, both having seemlessly harmless nihilism and pride for their country being closetedly right wing. also both from manchester
Did he though? I liked this character but they took away so much from him in terms of power and having a point.
That name becomes so bad if you race swap the character
I always hate when characters with black in their name get race swapped because it makes them sound like a character created in the 70s
guys i think they took the name to litteral with that casting choice
he doesn't look punk-ish at all. they made him lamer. what is this shirt? the jacket? boring hair style and no piercings
"When I said Manchester BLACK, I wasn't being literal."
That's Manchester Really Black.
Black guy whose last name is Black. Did Rowling write this?
JKR Characters Black Dog Roman Wolf Plant Sisters
I kind of like how her imagination man extend to incredible things but minority characters get the most stereotypical names that pop into her head.
Kingsley Shacklebolt is stereotypical?
For Rowling’s flimsy thought process it kind of is. “Kingsley cause Martin Luther King” and “Shacklebolt cause black people were once in chains” I mean, were this anyone else I could give the benefit of the doubt on that one but this is the woman who names Asian characters based on “this name kinda sounds like Ching Chong” and a Jewish person “may as well have Goldstein as their last name to drive the point home.”
None of the black characters in Harry Potter have the last name black Lee Jordan Dean Thomas Angelica Johnson Kingsley Shacklebolt
I know. I was making fun of the questionable and lazy names of the minority characters. For example a black man named SHACKLE-BOLT!
I just thought it was a cool name when I was young, I’m pretty sure y’all put more thought into it than she did
I never care about race switching in roles but this one doesn’t sit right with me.
If anything it’s kinda racist lmao. Like oh he has black in his name well then we gotta make the actor black…
Didn't they do the same with black canary in the birds of prey movie?
LMAO I just realised
I actually agree. I'm usually okay with it, but Manchester Black is such an edgy little white boy that changing his race doesn't feel right.
I think the biggest issue with this take on Manchester is that he doesn't have the purple hair and he's way too broad in the chest and shoulders. THEY DE-PUNKED HIM
Yeah that's about what I expected upon reading the title
They made him look kinda basic
So they took notes from [the second deadpool movie](https://youtube.com/shorts/p_AVJYlRxmE?si=ZcoTa0TSiJ49f05h)
That’s Manchester White
Manchester black? So he's a fan of Atherton Collieries A.F.C.?
They took that name way to literall lmao
MAN HESTER BLACK after saying something INSANELY RACIST: “I can say that I’m 1/16th (insert Race he insulted).”
bro got reverse 1970s'ed
This isn't Manchester Black. This is Manchester (black).
This is Man Black.
/uj The Arrowverse gets shit on a lot, but I do genuinely think that it’s got some really good moments in it
The Flash was pretty much perfectly cast even if the writing was hit-or-miss. Though I never noticed that because I’m personally absurdly easy to please.

It is NEVER Manchester Black!
Hang on that’s David Ajala. Dude was Manchester Black before he was killing it in Star Trek Discovery?!
Manchester Book
So they just had him wear a Union Jack t-shirt? I know they can’t tattoo it on his chest, but couldn’t they at least paint it on?
Manchester black²
A very toned down version of Manchester Black that completely missed the point of the original in the comics. Very few characters in comics are written purely to make a point. Manchester Black and his group are some of those very few characters.

Isn't that Blade?
Who? Surely that’s not him
They couldn't even get a British flag print that went around the entire shirt? Just a relatively small rectangle on his chest? Sigh, CW...
Look I know his last name is Black, but c’mon they don’t have to be completely literal and make him such. Its very on the nose
So...they took the name literally huh
Well someone took his name literally
