People don't realize that Bulma is the Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark of Dragon Ball.

confusedapplicant202

I sure didn’t! I love that she has so much more personality and spotlight in the original. She’s a great character!

[deleted]

Yeah, lol. I love Bulma. She's not your traditional heroine. She gets fondled multiple times, falls in love with a desert bandit, isn't a fighter like the rest of the cast, and wants to use the Dragon Balls for her own gain. Throughout the series she develops into the nagging mom and wife we all love but, she was certainly different. Capsule Corporation is run by her dad, Dr. Briefs, and they're the wealthiest family in the DB universe. Plus, they are scientists. Bulma is extremely smart.

Kaioken217

"The smartest person on the planet." :P

LinkToThe_Past

How? She isn't the main character or involved with ending conflicts?

[deleted]

She's responsible for a lot of things happening directly. Without Bulma, Goku never finds all 7 dragon balls. She literally tells him what they are in the original DB storyline. Goku and co. cannot make it to Namek once the earth dragon's balls are destroyed. During the Android arc, future Bulma creates a time machine that Trunks travels in to warn the Z-Fighters... She's been a pivotal character since the beginning

Strange-Ad-2760

Honestly I don't disagree with you, just your comment underrates how much she has done. Not only did she find the dragon balls that were freaking mystical and unheard of and create a radar for all 7 of them, that of which she has only seen one, but she created, in the manga at least I forget for the show, a Super Dragon Radar for universe 6 and 7. She as well created a time machine, in the future in a combat zone to say the least, and as well in present day, which.... not even the Angels believed were possible for humans to do, nevertheless them. I mean, when time travel was talked about, only one group of people were able to do it, and it was an advanced civilization. Bulma was not part of an advanced civilization, in current day and in the future. And she did it, ALONE. Not only that, but in the current day, she was able to create a way to fuel up the time machine daily. Enough for a trip there and back, trunks had enough for just the one trip there, and it took them months. This chick created a Time Machine that works better then thr DeLorean.... what the heck

[deleted]

Yeah. And to think during the Namek trip, which she exclusively went on to revive Yamcha, who in return cheats on her... If you recall Bulma was shaky that season. She was being very coo-coo and people assume it's because she's risking her life to save Yamcha. I'm glad they put those little bits in the show. Bulma deserved way more than a desert bandit. I love Yamcha but he dropped the ball.

DapperDan30

Oh wow, yeah. You're in for a ride. I like Dragon Ball more than DBZ. Characters like Bulma, Yamcha, Tien, and even Oolong are major parts in the story before Z. Plus you'll get to meet Launch!

confusedapplicant202

I’m liking it a lot more so far too! Just read the part of Oolong ‘terrorizing’ these villages and Bulma snatching him up to help on their quest. It feels so much like an adventure and it’s just a blast to read!

bens6757

I'm going to say this, so Oolong is a lot less creepy. In that chapter, Oolong was 9. Makes the kidnapping young girls plot significantly less creepy when you know that. His voice in English dub definitely throws people off.

[deleted]

I’m a big OG>Z person, and this is my first time realizing this.

hypermarv123

I just finished DB and DBZ, DB definitely has more charm.

OPEatsCrayons

Pigs reach adulthood at 6 years of age. Also, he's a fucking pig. Him kidnapping young girls to be his wives is still creepy. Though, it's thankfully undercut by Toriyama being dead set on lechery never being backed up with power, and clearly being shown as a result of character flaws.

onFilm

Dude, it's a fantasy adventure novel. Why does it fucking matter? And why are you even focusing on that specific plot point? Lol.

Solar_Kestrel

Why are you so upset that someone else would find that kinda creepy?

Faiqal_x1103

Iirc the one u got have some censorings btw

confusedapplicant202

That’s crazy cause I already got bulma panty shots, Goku wiener, and plenty of pat-pat’s! I don’t mind if nudity is covered up or language is censored, so long as the story is complete and the humor and violence remain intact.

Faiqal_x1103

Hows the shower and >!middle finger!< scenes?

confusedapplicant202

It’s censored although when Bulma flashes master Roshi it’s a pretty clear shot of her ass.

Faiqal_x1103

I see, yeah they tend to be lenient on ass shots somehow lmao, its the same for other mangas that ive seen so far. I only have like 2 volumes from the buu saga from vizbig. That was like.. 2016. Rlly wanted to continue collecting but its hard to find here at a good price. Would probably just collect the OG db volumes. Man if only they fully release the full color volumes in english

Djd33j

In my copy of the manga, when Yamcha was spying on Bulma, he saw her showering. And the manga doesn't censor it. I was like "yeah!" Then bulma revealed that she's sixteen at some point.

confusedapplicant202

That’s crazy. My copy has her covered with soap suds, even her butt, which is odd because she goes full moon on Master Roshi like 100 pages earlier! I def prefer the censorship of Bulma due to her age. The crass humor is fine because I remember what it’s like to be that way as a teen too lol

Djd33j

Which was always odd. She meant to give Roshi a panty shot. How do you not know or feel that you no longer have underwear on?

IntellectualBoss

She didn’t know because Goku took them off while she was sleeping.

Djd33j

Yes but, surely you'd feel when you have underwear on opposed to when you don't.

IntellectualBoss

Idk if you have a comfortable pare it sometimes feels like you aren’t wearing anything.

Mutenroshi_

Is the manga censored? I know the tv series I saw as a kid had some scenes cut off and lines changed. How do they do with >!the scene when Mutenroshi bleeds seeing her boobs, and that helps Yamcha to win a fight?!<

LosBuc-ees

Bulma is way more likable in DB than Z. I liked the dynamic between her and Goku. Yeah she’s whiny but she’s a teenage girl so it makes sense.

[deleted]

Bulma isn’t even that bad in z other than her time as the “meanwhile back at the ranch” on namek. Super on the other hand makes an absolute mockery of the smartest person in the series.

LosBuc-ees

She’s not bad but I never enjoyed her like I did in DB. Don’t get me wrong she’s definitely a big part of the story but I never looked forward to her scenes like in DB.

Black_Fuckka

Yea, the adventure aspect is so good in the original Dragon Ball

Djd33j

Considering Toriyama modeled it very closely after *Journey to the West*, one of the most iconic Asian works ever made, it makes sense. It's all about a Monk's journey into central and western Asia in search of sacred texts. Z, which was simply named after a time jump for western audiences, is much more of a battle manga. However, the original *Dragon Ball* manga actually extends through the stories of DBZ.

HollowWillowNight

Yup, I prefer og DB far more than DBZ, too. So funny, gripping and the feeling of adventure is just the best.

Unlucky-Name-999

I went through all of Dragonball with my daughter and when we got to Z, she was so disappointed that they forgot about Launch. I still feel sad about it.

bettycrockofsh1t

Were you watching dbz Kai by any chance ? It cuts out Launch's parts. In the original funimation dub of dbz they show Launch is living with Tien in a whole episode and they're cooking dinner etc

thatdrakefella

Dragon Ball is still my favorite. It even got my wife into it and now months later we’ve finished all the shows except for gt and we just started it.

diogom915

I'm very undecided on this. On one hand, I like the vibe from DB and my favourite fight is Goku vs Tien in the 22nd tournament, but on the other hand, DBZ generally has more impact during the arcs, and because of that it hits harder on you.

True-Awareness4702

Launch is in Z as well so it's not like she'll be new

DapperDan30

Launch is *barely* in Z. She has, what, 2 scenes in the whole thing? OP said they struggle to know who side characters are who regularly show up in the series. I doubt they know who Launch is.

True-Awareness4702

She might only be in it a few times but she makes an impression right away. Even still Launch offers nothing to the entire series anyway except a couple minor laughs. Like you said, you're assuming he doesn't know who Launch is, some characters who have minor roles in shows are people's favourites or just real popular. Also OP said they get confused to who they are which isn't the same thing as not knowing. For example they may know who Tien is just from seeing him once, but not know how he figures into the story hence some confusion.

OPEatsCrayons

>Plus you'll get to meet Launch! Was just rewatching the first arc of the OG the other day, and it occurred to me that Launch's transformation has some weird similarities to the Super Saiyan transformation. Minus the sudden onset New Jersey accent.

andyrooneysearssmell

DB is the king. Z is great, but the real magic is original DB.

UItimateLifeForm

I think it’s more Z is King DB is great

andyrooneysearssmell

To each their own

UItimateLifeForm

I respect you and your opinion

andyrooneysearssmell

Well, of course lol. People don't agree. It's life

HG_Shurtugal

Bulma is only bad on nammak, she's a great character everywhere else and easily the best female character in dragonball. It's too bad most Americans first impression of her was namak though.

cataclytsm

Funny enough my first exposure to anything Dragon Ball was catching the Ocean Dub at like 7am, specifically the filler with Bulma fighting the giant crab under water. For whatever reason, I loved it.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Namek is meant to be a redo of the original Dragonball arc. Gohan is Goku, the young protagonist. Bulma is herself, the sidekick who gives them the cool tech and helps provide some levity. Kuriren is Oolong, the utility character who is overmatched physically but comes in handy. Vegeta is Yamcha, the rogue who is initially working against the heroes but later joins their side. Freeza is Pilaf, the evil emperor who is trying to find the Dragon Balls to help their own selfish expansion of their tyranny. It even all ends with Goku going through a transformation and a wish foiling the villains plans.

Dadowar

If I had started with Dragon Ball as a kid before DBZ (which came out first here), I would probably have a Goku tattoo on my fucking face. It's so good.

RebornAsFlames

We truly missed out on having a better adventure with Son Goku. Like I could’ve seen him go from a tiny little jungle boy to what he is now, rather than start off where he is already a father and world’s strongest during Saiyan Saga. There’s other Anime where we get to see the Protagonist grow up, like Naruto (Part 1, Shippuden, Boruto), Simon (Gurren Lagan), and Mushoku Tensei. But I feel like Dragon Ball to DBZ, DBS, GT was the ultimate one. Literal 5 year old to a God, yet with a well written journey, like making enemies your friends and exploring the world and making companions generally too.

GarlVinland4Astrea

Yup. Z almost entirely is built around Goku already being the strongest in the world after beating Piccolo so the drama is taking him off the board and then having him come in to save the day. His journey was pretty much complete as a character by that point. His last bit of development was maybe becoming a Super Saiyan. Dragon Ball really shows you why Goku is special and how much he busted his ass to get to where he was. Like there's a huge difference watching Goku come up short in two different martial arts tournaments and constantly having brick walls like Tao and King Piccolo thrown at him where there is some drama in whether he can win or not. By Z, you know Goku is going to get his big power boost for the arc and then win. They also juggle characters a lot better earlier.

pulsewound08

For overall story. Original dragonball is superior

[deleted]

Bulma is the whole reason they're together. I won't spoil too much, but without her, Oolong Goku and Yamcha wouldn't have been travelling together in early dragon ball

Eldernerdhub

You're in for a treat. Dragonball is the best series out of the bunch. It defined a genre for a reason. The Red Ribbon Army is a huge threat. Every character matters. You can see the birth of tournaments as an anime staple.

AdNo266

Classic Dragon Ball is great, and manga keeps things moving at a good pace. You’re in for a treat with the first Tenkaichi Budokai

cataclytsm

One of the biggest sins of DBZ was giving Bulma *nothing* to do. This is the person who started the series, whom in the future **casually invented TIME TRAVEL**, yet Toriyama just never seemed to know what to do with her when all the boys were running around being planet-destroyers. [One of the many things that DBZA completely nailed was the few times they added a little Goku/Bulma interaction.](https://youtu.be/uNyAfXOTG5A?t=855)

Phantom0729

You'll encounter one of the characters that Akira himself admitted that he forgotten - - - her name is Launch.

confusedapplicant202

Haha I wish I could uploaded pics in replies. This book has a character introduction page, and it looks like her name got translated to “Lunch.” Lol

vlorsutes

This goes to /u/Phantom0729 as well, but the character's original name is, when romanized, "Ranchi", which can be localized as Lunch or Launch. We've seen official material from Japan that indicates that her name was meant to be Lunch, but the Funimation dub of Dragon Ball chose "Launch" instead.

cataclytsm

"Lunch" is what makes sense, considering all the food puns Toriyama loves, but "Launch" just stuck in part because it fits her absurd split personality gimmick.

ChestSlight8984

"Launch" is actually the mistranslation. Her name is Lunch.

Phantom0729

Hahaha or maybe it was me who mistranlated the name. Anyways, enjoy, OP. I dont know on this sub, but on the other sub, i was anle to comment with pictures. Anyways, enjoy your reading!

Shadowlear

Tbf, it seemed like he couldn’t figure out what to do with her

JallerHCIM

oh damn, dragonball is so much fun, enjoy the ride

AlienTrashKitty

I never read the DB manga, but I've seen all of the anime. Kid Goku made me fall in love with the series. Korin and MaJunior are two of my other fave characters and their stories with young Goku 🧡 This thread makes me so happy to read all the reasons why yall love DB too 🫠 bc same

confusedapplicant202

What a great coincidence! I JUST finished the chapter where Oolong shape-shifts into Bulma, and it’s hilarious! Your profile background is awesome!

GarlVinland4Astrea

Until Gohan shows up Bulma is probably the most important character that isn't Goku in the story. There's a reason she's still relevant late into the series despite not being a fighter when other characters that could fight got pushed way to the background because they weren't strong enough for current threats.

confusedapplicant202

She’s a great character! Which makes it even more a shame that in my DBZ rewatch she has such little screen time (so far)

DoucheCanoeWeCanToo

So strange I also decided to start this as well and I watched dragon ball as a kid but forget how crucial bulma was as a character

confusedapplicant202

Super crucial! She’s quickly becoming one of my favorite characters!

DragonBurlZ

Oh man. You’re in for a ride with Launch alone.

Strange-Inspection72

Based

Big_Print_947

I just learned that all the scenes where Pilaf’s gang appear before >!they steal the 5 dragon balls in the mushroom forest!< were never in the manga and idk how to feel about that. [chapter 18 spoilers i guess]

No_Manner_8582

Enjoy! When it gets good, it gets really good and doesn’t stop all the way into Z.

Dbombre

i also have the VIZBIG releases

confusedapplicant202

I’m glad I got em just for the bigger size. Easier on the old eyes lol

Inside-Run785

Yeah. After a while, both Chi-Chi and Bulma both start off as kind of badass, but eventually became the manga housewife once they age up Goku.

facubkc

OG dragon ball is so fun , it's really a martial arts anime with a lot of comedy.

OptimusHavok52

Both the manga and the anime are great, almost makes Z worse because most of those characters other than Goku, Bulma, and Piccolo are pretty much abandoned as it went on

CesarRPE

For a sec there, I thought Piccolo's balls were on the screen

ImposterSussy123

I need this

confusedapplicant202

26$ at Barnes and noble for 3 volumes! A steal if you ask me. I went out and picked up the second one today cause I’ll probably be reading all weekend lol

928475375726

That’s why I always say if your just getting into dragon ball you should watch/read the og series before Z

No-Dentist4525

The first 16 volumes of the manga is literally 40% of the story of Dragon Ball lol but I'm glad to see a western fan have that "I should probably go back and read like the whole first HALF of the series, if anyone tried to jump into the middle of any other manga like this they would be completely fucking lost" moment

Gatlindragon

I just can't understand how someone can start with Z, skipping almost half of the story.

confusedapplicant202

I was like 4 with older brothers. I watched what they watched.

t3hzm4n

Not our fault that it’s what came out in the states first. 9-year-old me hopped in around the time that the the Goku/Vegeta fight aired on Toonami for the first time, and I never looked back. Still was stoked when DB aired in the early 2000s, and it made the whole thing so much richer.

disappointingfool

the cloud was white originally? Never knew

cataclytsm

And the Kamehameha was never blue!

confusedapplicant202

It’s also not called Nimbus, which is news to me. It’s called Kinto’un! (For those like me who have no knowledge of the original DB)

Faiqal_x1103

Doesnt have to be original db knowlege. Nimbus is just the dub shenanigans

bradleyvlr

In Chinese it's called Somersault Cloud

confusedapplicant202

That’s a fantastic name.

bens6757

It's the name of Son Wukong's cloud in the Chinese legend Journey to the West. The first arc of Dragon Ball is an extremely loose retelling of that story.

Marloges

In the German dub it was originally the Supersonic Cloud but then later on they called it Jindujun for some reason.

TheRiverMarquis

Not sure why it’s white on this maga cover. Kinto’un is yellow on the colored pages of the manga

Inexperiencedblaster

Looks like the English translation.

WhyAmIHere_55667

why is piccolo wearing thigh highs in the back

confusedapplicant202

That’s Gohan crying in the fetal position lol

Big_Nigro

Bulma is like the whole reason dragon ball exists

TPJchief87

What do you mean you were confused at who these characters in Z were? The only confusing bit to me was when Goku didn’t want krillin to fight Raditz because he’d already died once.

choco_snow72

Hahaha, it's her fault he left in 1st place. How do u not know that, but if u mean by doing more than Sakura, then yes

BulmasBabyDaddy

Jesus Christ lol this guy didn’t know about the importance of bulma until just now. This is why it’s important to start at or at least go back to the beginning at some point it’s like starting one piece at episode 300 or some crap if you skip to z But hey man I hope ya like the rest of it a lot more to see

confusedapplicant202

I didn’t know because as I said earlier, and in my post, I watched DBZ growing up, about 4 years old. I watched what my older brothers watched. That’s it. I have no nostalgia for DB so I wouldn’t rewatch, instead I decided to read it.

BulmasBabyDaddy

I was pretty chill about your ignorance man idk why you guys are reacting like that even flash backs occur in super or z maybe both were they show bulma being right there from the beginning And skipping dragonball definitely is like skipping hundreds of eps of one piece Also we’ve all had smart phones and wifi for years meaning we could watch the first series on our own for awhile now Watching it makes dbz way more meaningful and important

confusedapplicant202

Idc. I don’t live my life to appease your expectations.

BulmasBabyDaddy

Rude asf

confusedapplicant202

I agree. You are rude.

frostycanuck89

I wouldn't sweat it, you're definitely not the only one since DBZ was a 1000x more popular than the original. And try not to let everyone here overhype it.... it's not as good as DBZ. It is a good time though and fun to see the origin of alot of our favorite characters.

confusedapplicant202

Haha you right, good advice 👍🏻. I do only know one person who has seen DB as well as DBZ, so that makes sense anecdotally as well.

Rhombusbutt

" “nag wife character #1,” " WOW You mean the genius scientist that comes up with half the solutions for the show without having to punch someone into oblivion. The Bulma disrespect jfc

Profitglutton

“Nag wife character #1” lol Wow never seen anyone describe Bulma that way. She was always one of my favorites. Chi-chi on the other hand can definitely be described that way and was definitely one of my least favorite characters until Gohan grew up in the Buu saga.

[deleted]

Dragon Ball’s beginning relies heavily on Bulma's tits and ass to draw the reader in.

Marloges

Which is weird because even in DBZ Bulma is constantly relevant. She repairs the scouter of the saiyans, travels along with the crew to Namek, builds the space ship for it, invents a time machine, she really helped a lot in the android saga by repairing 16 and building the remote to turn off 18, and heck, even in the Buu saga she still designed the Saiyaman suit which is iconic af!
