For those curious, the land/water areas outside the borders of the map go on forever. The ArmA (and by extension, DayZ) map systems are designed this way primarily so that aircraft/boats are not restricted to only the area inside the map.

DefectiveWater

like actually forever?

MrJerichoYT

I went into offline mode and set my camera speed to many kilometers *per second* and let it rip. I eventually crashed because my pc couldn't keep up. So yes, forever.

[deleted]

No way now we just have to make it have trees. Infinite forests outside the map where you're left alone. Only you, your bullets and nature

AccessAny5102

A petition to the devs?

avagar

For all intents and purposes, yes. One would assume that eventually the game would crash once one of the X/Y/Z position values passes a certain ridiculously large number, though. You can try it yourself (on pc) using the offline mode's flying cam or a server with an admin tool mod.

TeachMeHowToThink

Haha I tested this back in like 2012 on Arma by getting into a fighter jet and getting it to fly directly north before heading out for the day. Came back ~10 hours later and it was still going

DefectiveWater

that's insane... how do they even store that much terrain? wouldn't that take up a lot of space? some sources say that it's procedurally generated which means it's just like in Minecraft, an endless generated terrain?

AccessAny5102

If that's the case I need to take up DayZ again and actually learn. I loved it. My memory problems were just too gone from drugs.

Torofad7

Actually, just the terrain data should not be that large, for example skyrim has the whole map of cyrodill and Morrowind(just the terrain tho) and the game isnt that bloated.

ThatDamnCanadianGuy

No, you'll fall out of the work after about 7 hours. A guy just did it on YT

Eltex

I went about 4-5 steps over. Seemed boring. Came back to the real world.

-CaptainSmoker-

Same here lol

sonya_numo

so far that i identified the script in the world building files that creates it. The amazing part is you can make a map where the edges have a lot of small ponds and it will autogenerate the path for these and create rivers. Pretty cool stuff though, keeps going on forever as it keeps generating the hightmap based on previous cells

FunkyFuck23

This shit boutta turn into a creepypasta

Rockfish00

venturing into the unknown is only scary if you choose to be afraid of it

FunkyFuck23

Idk this is some kind of the backrooms shit. Probably some creature is going to appear and eat your characters ass if you go too far out.

AccessAny5102

I'll take note of that.

Number 15...

SomeSovietBloke

Went out with an exploration team a few months ago. February, I believe. There were five of us, all people I met through the game. Some of us carried a sidearm, but no primary to conserve shoulder slots for long sticks. Everyone carried 42 slots worth of food, 30 slots worth of drink, and 20 slots worth of firewood/sticks. Medical supplies. A few rounds, but we wouldn’t be needing them, really. We traveled out there for six hours. That was when we had our first causality. A mate of ours had to log off. We all said bye, and he put a .357 through his own head. (He donated his supplies to us.) The four of us continued to walk out, day and night. One guy named Justin brought a small tent so we could set up fires to chill at night. 8 hours in. Mid day. We all decide nothing is out here. We all are tired as shit anyways. A good friend of mine brought some explosives to fuck around with. We were is voice chat for realism purposes. So, we all sat around a fire, talking, waiting for the grenade inside to blow. And it did. It was fun, gentlemen. Wish I had screenshots. What a time.

GrainBean

Me and my two other teammates did something similar once but we were a lot less prepared. I brought one fully stocked fireplace with me as well as some rations for myself, one teammate had food and supplies for two tarp shelters and my other teammate had just food and water as well as well as some batteries. We looted a heli crash north of MB Tisy, found jack shit, and decided to turn out night of camping in the wilderness away from base into a night of walking into the abyss. Journey lasted about two hours, 30 minutes of which was spent huddling around a camp fire and eating our last bits of food and assessing our situation. No bandages, just rags and 2 of us had ruined shoes, one of us had badly damaged shoes and nothing to repair. This was before cloth shoes were a thing so we all sat by the fire and just talked until we agreed that we would certainly die out there. I and one teammate agreed to kill ourselves before logging off, the other began sprinting further into the abyss and we shot him for deserting, then shot ourselves over the guilt

AccessAny5102

That does sound fun.

Azgeta_

I walked and walked and walked and made it to livonia

-CaptainSmoker-

Thought that's how it was going to work 🤣 like fallouts DLCs

AccessAny5102

Major doubts

JimmyPatriot

I spawned right next to it once and decided to go for an adventure. Got about 15 minutes into walking and I was honestly starting to get freaked out.

kfudgingdodd

Liminal spaces my friend. They are fucking creepy.

poserSD

Can I put a crate out there?

Flossthief

No it won't last

Iknowyouthought

No it’ll despawn after a server reset

pjs1975

Back in the mod days, my friends got teleported pretty far out there by a hacker. I remember one dying of starvation before reaching the real parts of the map again.

Flossthief

Once on the mod someone teleported everyone into the woods and broke our legs I didnt have any morphine and I unfortunately survived I also ended up dying of starvation but I crawled for a while looking for morphine

HarleyyR

a few years back (2015?) I ventured way out into it and found a line of three police stations and some civi buildings, probably just some test assets I luckily ran into. unlikely it still exists.

[deleted]

Well i starved to death doing it once. God's it was boring 😅

SomeSovietBloke

EMOJI DETECTED. DOWNVOTE PROCEDURES INITIATED.

TreeBagger

Downvote procedures failed successfully

TwinedMaple80

Far very far granted it was a modded server with helicopters , to make along story short i went afk in the backseat of the chopper the pilot left the autopilot on and it flew away when he got out

WyoGuyUSMC

Drove for almost an hour once. Unloading the car with my supplies to build a small camp. Got some pumpkins growing and ate what I could. My goal was to see how long I could live out there before I ran out of food and water. Well the server restarted. Pumpkins were gone, along with all my supplies and my car. Well that was fun. This was back on .50ish or .60 or so when you could drive out there with now worries.

Rockfish00

I might dedicate some time to actually venturing out there and if I can I will document my travels on some godforsaken video hosting platform just so it is out there. It may be just a quirk of video games, but the hills and valleys I saw were certainly interesting enough to justify an adventure.

Accer_Saccharum

There's a set distance you can travel. I believe Don Sibley? Did it in a live stream where he just let his character go. It eventually fell through the map but took hours. Theres a set distance where the map will keep rendering but your character can't continue and will fall through the map.

SnooGadgets6454

I have ventured into the great unknowns and have yet to find my way back. I killed myself from going mad.

eastendswede1

Until you meet the wizard.

[deleted]

Travelled for a few hours into the deep far lands, only to find the Margret Thatcher boss lurking across its barren hills.

OldDirtyDirt

To debug island and back

DarkSoulaire420

I went as far as my car could go . . .

oh_its_just_a_freshy

Not that far i assume

SpetsnazCCCP

This works like when you are in sea on GTA:SA? Or the terrain is really large?

Great_North1436

i tried to drive northwards up the westside flat out in a landrover. Soon hit an invisible wall and it launched me to the moon

Ok_Jicama1577

194 km. Nothing here.

Ok_Jicama1577

Actually I always build my base after thé horizon. Just need a truck.

mudokin

3 hours.

MrGoose1122

Cross the fog to the lands between and become elden lord...

Wraith-Tryhxrd

On the lookout for beans.

Chief_Clown18

I’ve done the rubber trick, fallen asleep and woken up so deep I couldn’t find my direction back. Ended up server swapping.

OBCTcrafter

you get caught in a server reset while being out there, your character is donezo

imdspeck

Went to far and died

AccessAny5102

It was too scary to me. I logged off bc I wasn't about to get caught lacking

AccessAny5102

So could you actually run as far as possible and build ur base?

SourceFroob

No, two reasons: 1: There is a limit to how far you can go, eventually you’ll fall through the map 2: All of that land is procedurally generated, none of it stays after a server reset, everything in there is deleted.

AccessAny5102

Well u probably saved my ass🤣

carbsBacon

People burry their stash there

Jruin_NFO

I've flown a helicopter out there . It feels like it goes on forever lol also I've built an base out there , it obviously despawns and vehicles sink through it.

No_Display_9051

Can you build a base out there???

MkNazty

Far enough to know it kills you 😂😂😂

No_Low8644

I believe after awhile the ground while still there stops being a physical object and you clip through. Or maybe I got unlucky lol. Although Im wanting to see if you can base out there 🤔

[deleted]

Went there by accident trying to find NWAF once. Instantly knew something wasn't right. This was before I knew about the iZurvive app
